This week, we honor Danny Ludeman, who recently passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. A visionary leader, Danny made everyone feel seen and valued. Though not a St. Louis native, he embraced the city with unmatched passion. His episode was #18 of the Something Extra podcast, which aired in February of 2019. More than 300 episodes later, his message still resonates. Greg and Lisa Nichols, along with their daughter Ally, share a deep connection with Danny, remembering his quiet acts of kindness. After retiring from Wells Fargo, Danny attended seminary to equip himself to help others, then led Concordance Academy to new heights. His legacy lives on. — “You are everything that is: your thoughts, your life, your dreams come true. You are everything you choose to be. You are as unlimited as the endless universe.” Learning to manage, control, and direct the resources of your own mind is the greatest opportunity you will ever have. Until recently we didn't even know the name of our greatest adversary––that wall which has confined us to the smallest part of what we could have been. The adversary has been us. It is the thoughts which we have thought. It is our own thinking which has created the limited self-portraits of who we believed ourselves to be. Our technology has given us the tools, and science has shown us the way. Our emerging understanding of our own human brain has pointed us in the right direction. We have learned that what we do, and what we do with us, is not an accidental happening. We have learned that who we are and what we are is the result of more than a chance combination of genetic inclinations. We have learned that what happens next––for each of us––is more up to us than we might have thought: it is up to what we think. Talk to yourself. Learn the words––the right words––and use them. Make your self-talk a positive, everyday, self-directing habit. Talk to yourself in a way that is kind, loving, caring, strong, demanding, and determined. Talk to yourself in the right way, every day. When you do, you will give yourself the greatest gift you will ever give. – writes Shad Helmstetter in “What To Say When You Talk To Your Self.” Valeria interviews Megan Barken  — She is an experienced Licensed Clinical Social Worker, providing therapy services in her mental health private practice in Saint Louis, Missouri.  She also works part-time at a prison re-entry community program called Concordance Academy, where she works with men and women getting out of prison and re-integrating into the community.  Driven by her passion to help and serve others, she takes great pride in utilizing a variety of different therapy interventions to create an individualized therapeutic approach to each client.  Megan's primary focus areas in therapy are depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use disorders and addiction, self esteem issues, women's issues, blended families, pre-marital and marital, and relationship issues.  Her clientele consists of teens, adults, and couples. Megan graduated with a Bachelor's Degree of Human Services from Fontbonne University, and graduated summa cum laude from Saint Louis University with a Master's Degree of Social Work.  Outside of work, she has a beautiful, blended family of 4 children with her husband Peter, with one on the way!  In her free time, Megan is extremely passionate about horses, all animals, and all things outdoors.  Megan has a certified therapy dog, Louie, who was rescued in 2015 and attends sessions and facilities around St. Louis." Stepping Into Truth:

Roderick Nunn The United States has approximately 5% of the world's population but accounts for about 25% of those incarcerated. The statistics on re-incarceration are, honestly, awful. We know what happens when people are released from prison with no structure in place to help them successfully reenter society. How might it be different if instead of just letting people out and leaving them on their own we had systems in place that helped them find their way? Well, Concordance Academy does exactly that and Rod Nunn, Executive Vice President, Head of Education and Employment, joins me to talk about the ways in which our system is failing the formerly incarcerated and how we can fix this broken system. The costs of failing in this arena are often hidden from view for many of us but they are real and we all pay the price, if in no other way than financially, when the system fails.  This conversation inspired me to educate myself and to do my part, as we as a country grapple with our criminal justice system, to recognize that, for former felons, incarceration isn't the end of the story. The decisions that we, as a community make, can dramatically impact how the story plays out. Rod's 3 Action Steps 1) Share the message in your circles of influence that individuals with criminal records, these justice involved adults that we're talking about, they do in fact, become good high performing employees in the workplace, solid, productive citizens. 2) Stay informed with what's happening in public policy in your state, in your community. I would point you to the prison policy initiative as a great resource for that.  3) Visit Concordance Academy, to learn more about us. In particular our first chance campaign, which is a national campaign that is allowing us the ability to expand what we do and other places around the country. Our goal is to be in 10 cities by 2025. According to the most recent Kauffman Foundation Index of Startup activity, about 17% of entrepreneurs in Missouri and 29% in St. Louis where unemployed before starting their business. This suggests that some entrepreneurs are starting businesses out of necessity. This has implications for the number and types of businesses that are created, the founders’ access to capital and the potential to scale, as well as the potential to employ others and create generational wealth. It also reflects the reality that for those with limited career choices - due to education, experience and in some cases, involvement in the justice system - entrepreneurship can be a pathway to prosperity. We've invited Jason Watson, the Director of the Beyond Jobs program at Mission: St. Louis and former state senator, Jeff Smith, Executive Vice President of Community Engagement and Policy with Concordance Academy of Leadership to talk about how their programs help men and women tap into their inherent leadership skills, innate creativity and personal aspirations to be part of a thriving workforce and job creation in our region. We'll talk about how employers can unlock the transferable skills in this underutilized talent pool to help grow their businesses, as well as how mentors and volunteers can help individuals cultivate their entrepreneurial mindset as a way of envisioning a new tomorrow.
