Dear Arroe, Hi. Husbands, partners, and jobs come and go, but close friendships are our bedrock. Until they're not. What happens when these bonds sabotage instead of support? Who among us has the courage to walk away? And how can we protect ourselves from further heartbreak? In her provocative new book, “Estranged: How Strained Female Friendships are Mended or Ended,” (Meridian Editions) well-known gender expert and bestseller Susan Shapiro Barash takes a deep dive into the complexities of female friendships. By peeling back the societal narrative that our friendships are meant to last forever, she uncovers a more nuanced reality: the closest bonds do falter. Through groundbreaking research and 150 interviews with women aged 20 to 80, Barash reveals an emerging trend — estrangement among female friends. Examples of unhealthy friendships: 1. The Faithless Friend: Always there until a third party drives a wedge between you. 2. The Wayward Friend: Drawn to questionable or dangerous behavior. 3. The Green-Eyed Friend: Jealous and secretly rooting for your failure. 4. The Thieving Friend: Betrays you by stealing your ideas, opportunities, relationships. 5. The Disparaging Friend: Tears you down with relentless criticism disguised as “honesty.” She uncovered how these suboptimal friendships can impact mental health, why women avoid conflict even in damaging relationships, the emotional trauma of cutting ties with a friend and estrangement as a radical yet necessary act of self-preservation. Barash sheds light on estrangement—both for the “estranger” who walks away and the “estrangee” who is left behind. She challenges women to reimagine their friendships and take the bold step of letting go when necessary. This cutting-edge book offers an empowering path forward: learning to prioritize self-worth, stability and authenticity over loyalty to friendships that no longer serve us. Barash has written several nonfiction books, including Tripping the Prom Queen, and A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us. She taught gender studies at Marymount Manhattan and has guest taught creative nonfiction at Sarah Lawrence's Writing Institute. She was featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, Marie Claire, and has appeared on TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC and as a guest on NPR and Sirius. She was a panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, a judge for the International Emmys, and Vice Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's JFK School of Government. Radical Self-Tenderness: Christie Hardwick Tenderness is pleasurable. So why does it feel like something to avoid, something to cringe from, something to quickly get through? When you are tender with yourself, or someone is tender with you, it is vulnerable. So why not be vulnerable? We all have our stories. Radical Self Tenderness takes self care to the next level. We cultivate within us a vibration of love that heals, What if taking care of you is part of taking care of the world? If you live tenderly on the inside could it contribute to more tenderness in your life and in those whose lives you touch? Can you be tender with what causes you to feel pain? Can you see how self acceptance contributes to peace? What if we were meant to love ourselves? What would that make possible? Christie has spent more than thirty years developing leaders and managing change. While in the high tech sector, she simultaneously held leadership positions at work and in the community. Christie is an American Leadership Forum Senior Fellow and faculty member. For five years, she served on the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. She was the founding board chair of GreatSchools.net, served two terms as an elected school trustee (recognized by CTA with their State Gold Award) and also chaired the board for GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network. She is an expert facilitator of Contextual Leadership with the Institute of Women's Leadership and The American Leadership Forum, Silicon Valley. Licensed in 2007 and ordained with CSL in 2015, Christie teaches virtually with Illli.org and soulcallglobal.org and is a member of the ministry team at First Unity Spiritual Campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. Hearing God in a dream can be a life-changing experience, but it can also be a confusing one! Dreams speak a symbolic and sometimes confusing language and the process of interpretation is not well understood, making it subject to mistakes and abuse. It's no wonder the claim to hearing God in a dream is often met with skepticism, disinterest and even mockery. Dream interpretation is more art than science, so it isn't always straightforward or formulaic, but there are some principles we can learn that will help us hear God more clearly in this creative and powerful way. In this episode of the show, I talk with British dreams expert Tony Cooke about the common mistakes people make when learning to hear God in dreams. We unpack the dynamics of the God-dream experience so that you can confidently discern God's voice as we sleep. You'll discover: A little of Tony's back story and how he became interested in dream interpretation when prophetic experiences broke out in his church. Mistake 1: misunderstanding the symbolism of people in our dreams. One of the biggest mistakes people make is when they see a related person in their dream and they assume the dream is about that person. Mistake 2: over-reliance on dream dictionaries. A dream dictionary is helpful in teaching us about symbolism, but has limited use, because symbols must be understood in the context of the dreamer's life. Mistake 3: fixating on individual symbols while not considering the bigger picture. Mistake 4: dream interpreters who lapse into prophecy and thereby add to the message of the dream. Mistake 5: the inability to discern between soul and spirit in a dream. A reminder that making mistakes is part of the learning process! Given our propensity for error, humility in dream interpretation is crucial. We also need to receive training and be willing to reflect on our experiences in community. The biggest mistake of all is not getting trained properly. Humility says, “I need to know how to do this properly or I can do damage.” Subscribe to God Conversations with Tania Harris and never miss an episode! About Tony Cooke Tony is the founder of The Dream Academy (www.thedreamacademy.online), an online training and support site for biblical dream interpreters. He and his wife Dwee planted pastored the Cheltenham Vineyard Church in 2009 and later continued to teach and train in many countries including The Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, India, South Africa, USA, Spain and Ireland. Tony is also on the Leadership Board of Patria Ministries International, a global family of businesses, churches, ministries and itinerant ministers which provides a highly interdependent personal environment where leaders can build relationships and be strengthened and equipped for greater Kingdom influence. Tony and his wife Dwee have two grown up children and live on the south coast of England.

We're diving into an important topic: the representation of women in STEM careers. Kylie and Amelia founded Women in Chemicals (WIC) to create opportunities and empower women in the chemicals industry. Join Ocean House owner, actor, and bestselling author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with New York Times bestselling authors Susannah Marren, Laura Zigman, and Dara Levan, who will be discussing their novels, new in paperback. About the Authors: Susannah Marren is the author of Between the Tides, A Palm Beach Wife, A Palm Beach Scandal, and Maribelle's Shadow. Susannah has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, and Marie Claire and has appeared on national television, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC. Several of her titles have been optioned by Lifetime and HBO. She has served as a literary panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, as a judge for the International Emmys, and as Vice Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Women's Leadership Board at the JFK School of Government, Harvard. Her featured novel is Maribelle's Shadow. About Maribelle's Shadow: When her adored and impressive husband, Samuel, dies suddenly, the secrets and lies between Maribelle and her sisters rise to the surface. Compounding the anguish, the authenticity of their socially ambitious mother and lavish lifestyle of mansions, privilege, and couture clothes is thrown into doubt. Each sister realizes she must fend for herself as their carefully constructed image unravels. The pathway out is steep and worth any risk. Until the winner takes all. Laura Zigman is the author of six novels, including Small World, Separation Anxiety (which was optioned by Julianne Nicholson and the production company Wiip for a limited television series); Animal Husbandry (which was made into the movie Someone Like You, starring Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd), Dating Big Bird, Her, and Piece of Work. She has ghostwritten/collaborated on several works of non-fiction, including Eddie Izzard's New York Times bestseller, Believe Me; been a contributor to the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Huffington Post; produced a popular online series of animated videos called Annoying Conversations; and was the recipient of a Yaddo residency. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she helps clients via Zoom, phone, and sometimes in person with their writing. Her featured novel is Small World. About Small World A year after her divorce, Joyce is settling into being single again. She likes her job archiving family photos and videos, and she's developed a secret comforting hobby: trolling the neighborhood social networking site, Small World, for posts that help solve life's easiest problems. When her older sister, Lydia, also divorced, calls to tell her she's moving back east from Los Angeles after almost thirty years away, Joyce invites Lydia to move into her Cambridge apartment. Temporarily. Just until she finds a place of her own. But their unlikely cohabitation—not helped by annoying new neighbors upstairs—turns out to be the post-divorce rebound relationship Joyce hadn't planned on. Instead of forging the bond she always dreamed of having with Lydia, their relationship frayed. They rarely discuss the loss of their sister, Eleanor, who was significantly disabled and died when she was only ten years old. When new revelations from their family's history come to light, will those secrets further split them apart or, of course, correct their connection for the future? Written with wry humor and keen sensitivity, Small World is a powerful novel of sisterhood and hope—a reminder that sometimes you must look back to move ahead. Dara Levan is the creator and host of Every Soul Has a Story, a podcast in which she interviews inspiring people from around the globe. Her calling to impact others began at the age of twelve in her hometown of North Miami Beach, Florida, when she interviewed the nursing home residents where her grandmother lived and wrote their stories. As an undergrad at Indiana University, Dara earned a BA in English and pursued a career in journalism but decided to pivot and return to South Florida to earn her MS in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Dara stopped practicing speech therapy to return to full-time writing. Actively involved in her community, she is currently a board member of the Community Foundation of Broward and a board member of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation/Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Community Foundation of Broward. Dara served as a board member of the Goodman Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Broward County and Junior Achievement of South Florida. She is also a founding member of the Circle of Friends for the Alvin Sherman Library Research, Information, and Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University. Dara is a member of the Women's Fiction Writers Association, Women's National Book Association, and the Authors Guild. Her featured novel is It Could Be Worse. About It Could Be Worse Mired in self-doubt and blind loyalty, Allegra Gil suspects her charmed life may be a gilded cage. She has a devoted husband, Benito, two loving children, a thriving therapy practice, and lifelong friends. But when a surprising discovery in a piano bench reveals a shocking family secret, Allegra questions everything she thought she knew about the two people who raised her. Was it true? Did her father, a respected pediatric neurosurgeon, harm instead of heal? And Allegra's mother—how much did she know? As the past threatens the present, Allegra plays the song of what was, what is, and what may never be in this “powerful and poignant story about letting go” (Jean Meltzer, international bestselling author of The Matzah Ball). Composed with the cadence of a waltz—up, up, down—through flashbacks to childhood memories in Miami and a music camp in Michigan, It Could Be Worse is a heartwarming, at times heart-wrenching, multigenerational story of a woman supported and embraced by many while shaken to the core by a few. “The gorgeous prose and raw, unflinching narrative both heal and inspire. A stunning debut.” (Samantha M. We thought it wise to feedback what happened and some reflections on the ARG now the Leadership Board has ended. Note: it was recorded in a pub yard next to a building site, we sat in the cold crisp shade under blue skies and chatted. It was rather pleasant, but noisy! “I have two choices every day when I get up—one is happy, one is unhappy. I don't like unhappy. So, I try to make the best of every single day.” Florine Mark Denise talks to Florine Mark, a lover of Detroit, entrepreneur and philanthropist who brought Weight Watchers (WW) to Michigan after she tried the program, having always struggled with her weight. After being denied a bank loan because she was a woman, she convinced WW with her positive attitude and self-belief to make her a loan of $5,000 to start her business. She went on to be the largest franchise holder expanding her business in the United States, Mexico and Canada—worth billions. Although she never graduated from college, she's most proud to have put all her sisters, her own children and nieces and nephews through college. She may have grown up poor, but she was always loved and never criticized at home for being fat. The kids at school, however, were not so kind. What are her secrets to overcoming adversity? Be good to yourself. Exercise. Eat well. Spend time with friends and loved ones. Thank people. Her methods for dealing with life's challenges are highly effective, even if simple. Always affirm the positive. She loves to have a good cry when she feels like it (maybe beat up a pillow) and then moves on! She's equally devoted to her family and to everything she sets her mind to. So now that she's in her 80's, enjoying life every day, she's got a podcast, sits on many boards and spends time with her family. Florine tells a wonderful, heartwarming story of her favorite Detroit moment. It's no wonder she's written a book, Talk to the Mirror: Feel Great About Yourself Each and Every Day, which you can find wherever books are sold. *** Florine Mark is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, author and motivational speaker. She was the largest Weight Watchers International franchise holder, the first to bring the program to Michigan, expanding in the Midwest, Mexico, and Canada. Having recently sold her empire, she continues to serve as a Weight Watchers Ambassador. In 2001, she was elected to the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. She has served on many Boards and was listed among the “100 Most Influential Women in Detroit” by Crain's Detroit Business and one of the “50 Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World.” Florine was the first female recipient of the Neil Shine Lifetime Achievement Award. She generously shares her time and experience with many organizations including Children's Hospital of Michigan, Business Leaders of Michigan and Detroit Regional Chamber. Although she never graduated from college, she holds several honorary degrees for her remarkable service to society. LISTEN to her show, Today's Takeaway with Florine Mark, wherever you get your podcasts. Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years. Elie Wiesel walked out of Buchenwald, one of the largest concentration camps in Germany, on April 11, 1945, the same day as the late father of journalist Howard Reich, the legendary former jazz critic for The Chicago Tribune. Reich never talked to his father or mother, both survivors, about their Holocaust experiences. But in 2001 Reich's mother began to relive those experiences, and his quest to piece together the stories he never knew about led to his book and subsequent film, Prisoner of Her Past. Nearly a decade later, Reich sat down to interview Elie Wiesel and discovered an instant connection, which he wrote about in The Art of Inventing Hope. Reich joins us to discuss all this, plus how jazz helped him confront his family's past. Then, in honor of Yom HaShoah, we're joined by Lilli Platt, AJC Senior Development Director and Director of Women's Leadership Board, who was born in a Displaced Persons (DP) camp and is the child of Holocaust survivors. _____ Episode Lineup: (00:40) Howard Reich (23:01) Lilli Platt (25:29) Manya Brachear Pashman (29:05) Seffi Kogen _____ Show Notes: Prisoner of Her Past The Art of Inventing Hope: Intimate Conversations with Elie Wiesel The Four Questions in Irish, and 4 More Great Moments from AJC's 2021 Diplomatic Seders
She's inspiring. She's authentic. She's my friend and client. And you're going to love her.Since I started coaching and mentoring her about two years ago, Alyssa Nelson has quickly ascended her career ladder. First, accepting a new job with 50% pay increase, and then being promoted into a leadership role at that company, Alyssa is more than just an inspirational story, she's a phenomenal human being. As soon as you listen to this episode, I know you're going to love her as much as I do.Alyssa and I met about two years ago when we got matched through a mentoring program and I was matched as her mentor. I was immediately impressed with how eager Alyssa was to take whatever next steps were necessary to grow and develop herself. There aren't a lot of people out there with that level of commitment to improvement and self-discovery. And she isn't just committed on paper, she is a take-action-woman. When Alyssa got her new job, I got a surprise in the mail: a gift from Alyssa with a note attached that said, "Thanks for being my Susie." The gift? A perfectly pink coffee mug that says "Tits Up" on one side and a microphone on the other! (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel reference, in case you didn't know it). #titsupAlyssa is part of the Leading Ladies group coaching, now called "The Leadership Board" — an online leadership development community for women who want to grow their careers and ascend the career ladder. She continues to soar up, up, up in her career and inspire many people. We hope you love this episode.
