— “You are everything that is: your thoughts, your life, your dreams come true. You are everything you choose to be. You are as unlimited as the endless universe.” Learning to manage, control, and direct the resources of your own mind is the greatest opportunity you will ever have. Until recently we didn't even know the name of our greatest adversary––that wall which has confined us to the smallest part of what we could have been. The adversary has been us. It is the thoughts which we have thought. It is our own thinking which has created the limited self-portraits of who we believed ourselves to be. Our technology has given us the tools, and science has shown us the way. Our emerging understanding of our own human brain has pointed us in the right direction. We have learned that what we do, and what we do with us, is not an accidental happening. We have learned that who we are and what we are is the result of more than a chance combination of genetic inclinations. We have learned that what happens next––for each of us––is more up to us than we might have thought: it is up to what we think. Talk to yourself. Learn the words––the right words––and use them. Make your self-talk a positive, everyday, self-directing habit. Talk to yourself in a way that is kind, loving, caring, strong, demanding, and determined. Talk to yourself in the right way, every day. When you do, you will give yourself the greatest gift you will ever give. – writes Shad Helmstetter in “What To Say When You Talk To Your Self.” Valeria interviews Megan Barken  — She is an experienced Licensed Clinical Social Worker, providing therapy services in her mental health private practice in Saint Louis, Missouri.  She also works part-time at a prison re-entry community program called Concordance Academy, where she works with men and women getting out of prison and re-integrating into the community.  Driven by her passion to help and serve others, she takes great pride in utilizing a variety of different therapy interventions to create an individualized therapeutic approach to each client.  Megan's primary focus areas in therapy are depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use disorders and addiction, self esteem issues, women's issues, blended families, pre-marital and marital, and relationship issues.  Her clientele consists of teens, adults, and couples. Megan graduated with a Bachelor's Degree of Human Services from Fontbonne University, and graduated summa cum laude from Saint Louis University with a Master's Degree of Social Work.  Outside of work, she has a beautiful, blended family of 4 children with her husband Peter, with one on the way!  In her free time, Megan is extremely passionate about horses, all animals, and all things outdoors.  Megan has a certified therapy dog, Louie, who was rescued in 2015 and attends sessions and facilities around St. Louis." Today I talked to Zarak Khan and Laurel Newman about their book Building Behavioral Science in an Organization (Action Design Press, 2021). As an academic discipline, behavioral science is as the book's introduction states, an umbrella term that includes social psychology, behavioral economics, and sociology among other fields. As applied in business and government, for instance, behavioral science is often a matter of creating small “nudges” in designing changes to human behavior in hopes of achieving buy-in rather than resistance from those who are wedded to the status quo. Khan and Newman, who co-edited and contributed to this book, are candid about the challenges involved. They are also faithfully committed as professionals to achieving real innovations and transformational advances whenever feasible. In particular, this episode focuses on a pair of behavioral science applications: in HR and in promoting innovation. Zarak Khan is a Senior Behavioral Researcher at Duke University's Center for Advanced Hindsight, as well as a Behavioral Science Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and a board member of Action Design Network. Lauren Newman is a behavioral scientist at Edward Jones, and a former psychology professor at Fontbonne University. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of nine books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. At the 2021 Plein Air Easton festival, Lon Brauer won the Judge's Choice award with his piece "Solitary Man".  In today's episode, Tim and Marie sit down with Lon to talk about his unique style, and Tim works on getting his name correct.   Lon Brauer is an American artist known for his work in figure and plein air landscape. He has a BFA from Washington University and an MFA from Fontbonne University – both in St. Louis, Missouri.   Born in 1955 Brauer's esthetic leans toward early 20th Century Realism as well as the Golden Age of illustration. This coupled with a sprinkling of Abstract Expressionism results in a mash up of the traditional and the avant guard. Consider it a salad of Eakins, Henri,  Wyeth, and DeKooning. Brauer's work is firmly rooted in figurative themes with a strong emphasis on drawing. His subject matter ranges from the conceptual to the concrete. In his work he develops a strong foundation composition on which to hang the paint. He feels that painting should be primarily about the paint itself as it describe subject. The subject of a painting is only a part of the story. The way the paint is applied and manipulated speaks to the making of an image and drives the narrative - the emotional narrative.   Follow Lon Brauer: Official Site Facebook Instagram Twitter   Follow Plein Air Easton: Official SiteFacebookInstagramYouTube   To inquire about being a guest or sponsoring the Plein Air Easton Podcast, send us an email at info@pleinaireaston.com.   This episode is sponsored by JFM Enterprises, providing distinctive ready-made and custom frames & mouldings to the trade since 1974.   Music in this episode was generously provided by Blue Dot Sessions and Podington Bear.

Doug Weaver is a real cool guy! He lives in Old North with his wife and son, where he paints magnificent paintings in his basement. Weaver received his MFA in painting from Fontbonne University in 2013. After graduating, he moved to Rwanda in the Peace Corps where he taught art, music, and drama. He also found time to organize and implement women's empowerment trainings for young men as well as wrestling wild dogs in a spay and neuter campaign. In 2015, Weaver moved back to St. Louis and became a father. That's when he went from being merely a cool guy to a REAL cool guy. He teaches art as an adjunct instructor at Stevens - The Institute of Business and Arts, as well as pursuing his own artistic excellence. In his spare time he reviews grants for the Regional Arts Commission and grows rare and exotic plants, because of course he does. His recent work focuses on the city of St. Louis and volunteerism. In 2019, Weaver had two solo shows. One series of cityscapes at The 3rd Degree Glass Factory, and a series of 10 paintings representing nonprofit organizations in St. Louis. These paintings were donated to volunteers at those nonprofits, because Doug is baller AF. Doug Weaver makes all of his paints by hand using pigments from plants he grows in the Old North Community Garden, oils from farms in Missouri and Illinois, and beeswax from Clayton, MO. I think we can expect big things from Doug Weaver. https://dougweaverart.org/ www.facebook.com/DougWeaverArt www.instagram.com/dougweaverart/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of Content and Engaged Learning for WorkInSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast! Alright, a quick recap of the past few weeks shows -- they've been awesome. If you haven't listened go back and check out: Raleigh Anne Gray, CEO of Must Love Sports and Senior Director of Athlete Exchange for WassermanMelissa Silberman, Atlanta hawks Director of Partnership Activation Ameena Soliman, Player Personnel Coordinator for the  Philadelphia EaglesNeeta Sreekanth COO of INFLCR I just noticed that it's been ladies' night on the Work In Sports podcast for the last month-- love that! It wasn't even intentional! Coming up this week is Kevin Brown, Director of Community Relations for the Detroit Red Wings and Director of the Detroit Red Wings Foundation -- super cool guy, I learned a lot about the power of community relations from our conversation. I know you will like it.  We're also getting all of our fall semester sports curriculums up and running -- for those of you who don't know, we have an online Sports Career Game Plan program with over 120 pages of content, 30+ videos, downloadable worksheets and audio files and more.  Our program is being used by Grand Canyon University, University of Florida, Ball State, University of Findlay, Fontbonne University, Dubuque University, and many more.  If you are a professor listening, this program is available to you -- it teaches the strategies and tactics to get hired in sports. Period. From the feedback we've received from students, it's life-changing.  If you are interested in learning more or seeing a demo -- email me - b clapp at work in sports dot come. If you are a student -- push your professor to learn more about our program. Your goal is to get a job after college, and we'll teach you how.  Alright on to today.  Before we get into today's question - I have a request for all of you. I need more podcasts to listen to, personally.  Now, here are the rules: I don't need more sports podcasts, I have plenty of those and I know what I like. I need more podcasts for when I'm not listening to sports. I don't need political podcasts, I have a few I listen to and respect, and I'm well covered there. I really really like well-produced professional podcasts that tell a story over a 6-10 episode arc. Examples: Winds of Change, The Clearing, The Catch and Kill podcast..and the granddaddy Serial. If you have any interview-style shows, like mine but not necessarily related to sports or sports careers, let me know those too...I'm always trying to improve my questioning and techniques.  I'm looking for more smart, insightful podcasts so if you have a suggestion that hooked you - please let me know. I'm a content junkie, and I like to learn.  Jump over to our private Facebook group, by searching for the Work In Sports podcast on Facebook - answer a few questions so I know you are for real, and let me know what you like and are listening to right now.  I'll start the thread over there and you can all share… OK, now to today's question from John in Los Angeles… and I'll be honest, it's a subject I don't like very much: “Hi Brian, I've recently graduated and while the world is turned upside down a bit right now I am lucky to be in the midst of interviewing with two companies. Your advice over the years has really really helped me, I wouldn't be where I am right now, feeling like success has arrived, without your help.  My question is simple -- I think both companies are going to offer me positions -- how do I negotiate to get the best deal for myself and my future? “ Hey John, thanks for the kind words and I'm thrilled to know I helped. Even if it's just 1%, I'm glad to be a part of your story.  Negotiation is so incredibly important, but it's also awkward and difficult… for everyone.  The first thing to recognize is that you are venturing into an area many many people are afraid to even travel...

Religion has depth and breadth that could not possibly be fully explored in a two hour podcast.  The fellas make an honest attempt to provide an overview of the major religions of the world, both past and present, and address the modern day issues that relate to them.  To help guide their discussion, they have enlisted Steve Stopke, a Professor of Religious Studies at Fontbonne University.  Professor Stopke also has a degree in Biology, so he has the bonafides required to approach this topic from both a scientific and spiritual viewpoint. Religion can be a very inflammatory subject to broach.  Religion taps into the core beliefs and value systems of a person and any challenge to these viewpoints can be met with massive emotional resistance. All we ask is that you listen with an open mind and understand that what you hear are different viewpoints about religion.  Big thanks to  Professor Stopke for approaching every religion with respect, authenticity, thoughtfulness, and tact.  Steve Stopke has been an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Fontbonne University for 23 years. He holds a Masters in Religious Studies from Washington University, a Bachelor in Biology from the University of Missouri, and an MBA in Accounting.  He also loves Guinness.
