The best sports scientists bridge the gap between theory and practice. They bring coaching experience to the table and help help solve the real problems athletes are facing. This describes Esa Peltola. His diverse experiences in coaching, physiology, talent identification, and sports science helped him drive athletes to the next level, including coaching the first Australian to break 10 seconds in the 100 meters. On this week's GAINcast he shares his journey. Craig Pickering has written a great series to help coaches understand and evaluate sports science: understanding science for coaches, what makes for good research, critical elements for effective sports science, and becoming an better consumer of sports science. In our HMMR Classroom, members can learn form Professor Peter Weyand about sorting sports science in a digital era. For more on the golden era of Australian Institute of Sport, GAINcast 219 with David Martin provides a great look at the work done during that time. GAINcast 227 also had on guest Dean Benton, who took a lot of influence from Peltola.
Coaches now devote more time to recovery and injury prevention than ever before. At the same time, injury rates have climbed to historic levels in many sports. How can it be that we're working harder to prevent injuries, but athletes continue to get hurt at increasing rates? On this week's GAINcast we look at how the modern approach to injury prevention might actually be making things worse, and propose some new ideas for reducing injury rates. You can read some of Vern's memories of Sam Cunningham here, as well as this profile of the Cunningham brothers from earlier this year. This episode was inspired by Vern's article on the topic from July. Return to performance and rehabilitation was our HMMR site theme in September 2020, with contributions from many authors. The performance model for rehabilitation was looked at on GAINcast 49 with Bill Knowles and HMMR Podcast 231 with Donie Fox. We also covered injury prevention on GAINcast 6. Hamstring injuries has also been a recurring theme. Here are two articles on hamstring injuries and hamstring solutions. The new research on injury prevention discussed in this episode was summarized by Craig Pickering in our most recent Sports Science Monthly. HRV and data was another topics discussed on this episode, and we looked at it in more detail on GAINcast 221 with Dr. Michael Joyner.

In this episode we discuss the term Performance Health and what it means to us across the continuum of physical development. We discuss how Performance Health looks in action while discussing it's art and science. We make a case for how we see it fit in the circumstances we each work in. We make regular reference to Xavier Roy's (our friend) recent article in SimpliFaster (https://simplifaster.com/articles/sports-academics-training-medical-school/) and Craig Pickering's recent series for HMMRMedia (http://www.hmmrmedia.com/pickering/).
The waffle has led to amazing opportunities to bring in experts from a range of fields to chat through all things nutrition and sport performance. Our ultimate goal has always been to translate the science into practical tips that you can apply in your everyday lives. This pod was born from a need to answer some important questions regarding genetic testing. What is the place of genetic testing in sport, nutrition and overall health? Who will find it useful? When is it a waste of time? Genetic testing typically involves sending off a sample away for analysis and receiving back a report which tells you a few key things about what you may want to change in your diet and lifestyle. However, is it worth the investment? Today's podcast is all about chatting through the evidence, understanding where the research currently lies and deciding whether it's worth the investment. To have this conversation we have bought in someone who has a lot more experience on this topic than we do. Craig Pickering is an exercise physiologist who has completed his doctoral studies in genetic testing within sport. He also comes from an athletic background so understands the unique challenges athletes face. Craig was a track sprinter for team GB but also worked in a genetic testing company prior to moving to Australia. He is now the athlete pathway manager for Athletics Australia. This podcast really turns the research into real life experience making it super useful to you guys. We have show notes on our blog at www.compeatnutrition.com where you can download all of the things we chatted about today including the key papers we mentioned in the podcast and any other interesting material. Over on our site, you'll also have access to our Free Preliminary Assessment! https://compeatnutrition.typeform.com/to/AayZgf
Today’s conversation is with John Kiely and Craig Pickering. John was on episode 52; we talked the lack of evidence supporting periodized training programs. We begin with the current state of evidence in genetic testing for athletic potential and planning training. We move on to more useful ways of viewing your training program. It really is simple yet multitudes are derailed by chasing placebo effects for marginal gains on an inconsistent program. Oh, and we talk about placebo effects as well.
