What are the demands of modern high school coaching? John Larralde calculated that he has just 43 training days to prepare his track athletes this year. Add to that a small student population, multi-event athletes, a young coaching staff, and little connection to the daily campus life. Some might see these as problems, but for Larralde that's no big deal as he describes himself as a problem solver. On this episode of the GAINcast Larralde talks about how he approaches high school track coaching. Lachlan Penfold has worked with some of the world's most successful clubs across numerous sports from rugby to the NBA to water polo. While he is an innovative physical performance coach, one theme keeps emerging to him: the most successful clubs are built more on the strength of connection as the strength the body. On this episode of the GAINcast he looks at how to build a culture starting with a foundation of joy, monitoring athletes through personal interactions, and more lessons from some of the world's best coaches. Tradition makes baseball a great game, but tradition also holds it back. If you read or follow baseball, the sport often seems like it is in a constant civil war between the data analysts and the old school coaches. Coach Paul Davis pulling together and balancing both sides of the spectrum, helping move the sport forward while respecting and learning from its past. He joins us on this week's GAINcast to talk about creating a learning organization, finding usable data, the evolution of the game, rethinking the demands of pitching and athletic development for pitchers, and a look at velocity and pitcher health. Coaches education is filled with lessons on technique, methods, sport science, and more. What is often missing is how to put it all together. How to design a training session, training cyle, or training year is a key skill that many coaches struggle to learn in the trenches. On this week's GAINcast we bring together an elite roundtable with Nick Garcia, Brian FitzGerald, and Jimmy Radcliffe to discussion their own mistakes in planning, putting together progressions, planning in-season training, defining themes, and much more. Why are some athletes faster than others? And how do we make athletes faster? In their new book Dan Cleather and Jon Goodwin argue that the answer begins and ends with a consideration of force production. Both of them join this week's podcast to discuss key drivers in sprint performance, what factors are modifiable, and how we often get distracted from what really matters. For more information on this topic, read the complete show notes at: https://www.hmmrmedia.com/2023/05/gaincast-episode-269-force-and-sprinting-with-dan-cleather-and-jon-goodwin/ The following links were also referenced in the podcast or provide some additional reading material on the topic: The GAINcast is sponsored by GAIN. Cleather has also written Force: The biomechanics of training and The Little Black Book of Training Wisdom. Here's a full overview of all the sprinting resources on HMMR Media. On GAINcast 89 Professor Peter Weyand discussed the difference makers in speed and his lab's research. Former lab member Ken Clark was also a guest on GAINcast 21 talking about linear speed, and HMMR Podcast 94 talking about multi-directional speed. Recent graduate Emily McClelland was also on GAINcast 262. On the topic on evaluating science, Peter Weyand also contributed a lecture on the topic in the HMMR Classroom. Vern has also shared some tips you can use to define your filter. This was also a topic we discussed on GAINcast 74. And Craig Pickering provided a great introduction to sports science in a series of articles for the site on understanding science for coaches, what makes for good research, critical elements for effective sports science, and becoming an better consumer of sports science. For more from Pickering browse the Sports Science Monthly where he breaks down the latest research in terms coaches can use.
Another baseball season is underway and, once again, the injuries are piling up. On this week's GAINcast we speculate about what might be causing the injuries, how training is related to injuries, and where using heavy and light implements can go right or wrong. For more on the topic of baseball, listen to GAINcast 35 with pitching coach Paul Davis. Over HMMR Podcast Episode 69 we also talked with Driveline Baseball's founder Kyle Body. Injuries have been a topic several times on the show, including GAINcast 6 on injury prevention and GAINcast 224 on injury explosion. Throwing different implements was discussed a little on our last episode with Bogdan Poprawski. In addition, HMMR Podcast Episode 10 covered the topic. Nick Garcia's master's thesis covered training for the shot put and took a close look at the training methods of top coaches and their use of different implements. In a series of posts he talks about training with different implements, how elite coaches use different implements, finding the right implements for your throwers. While not as detailed, I also looked at the benefits of light and heavy hammers in a series of posts: part 1 and part 2.
The 1980s were a time of global awakening in track and field. As coaches experimented with new training methods, ideas started spreading all over the blog. Coach Bogdan Poprawski was at the center of that process, moving as a young coach from Poland to Canada and helping Gerard Mach set up a new system. On this week's GAINcast he joins us to share some stories about becoming a coach in a different era and culture, the transition to Canada, and much more. Being a better mover solves a lot of problems: it makes it easier to pick up skills and adapt to new situations, which also helps reduce the risk of injury and increase the level of performance. Rather than focusing on your next injury prevention exercise, most athletes would be better off just becoming better overall movers. Dutch national football team coach René Wormhoudt joins this week's GAINcast to discuss his training approach which builds upon this philosophy for both youth athletes and the world's top athletes. Long-term athlete development models are often packaged with convincing narratives and buzzwords. But they're also full of a few myths as well. Dr. Joe Eisenmann's career has combined his academic interests in pediatric physiology with his practical experiences in youth coaching. Combined he's helped bring some common sense to the topic of LTAD. On this week's podcast he talks about some of the history and misconceptions of LTAD, as well as his own approach to the area. GAINcast 79 looked at talent development and Paula Jardine joined us on GAINcast 189 to look at talent identification. On GAINcast 160 we looked at going beyond pathways with James Marshall. Vern has written about LTAD several times: letting kids be kids and how LTAD has become cliché.

The debate about the transfer of change of direction and agility training is a bit like the debate about general and specific training. Specificity is a critical factor, but not all general training is the same. And specific training can also be counterproductive if you don't understand what you're training for. On this weeks GAINcast, Bill Knowles joins us to discuss how he sees the spectrum of agility training and how a purposeful approach can improve performance all along the spectrum. When we chase power we often look to strength coaches for the answers. But some of the most powerful athletes in the world are throwers. Coach John Smith thinks we're asking the wrong people; we should be looking to the throwing coaches for the best examples of how to develop powerful athletes. LTAD has almost become a cliché. Everyone has an LTAD program and they all look the same. How can that be? Because the models assume a linear march to the top of the athletic achievement pyramid. In reality it is a very chaotic process at best, full of detours, false starts and redirection. The interview that inspired this podcast was HMMR Podcast 280 with Mitch Crouser explaining the long-term approach that developed his son into a world record holder. For more on the topic of LTAD listen to practical examples of LTAD in practice on GAINcast 69 with Patrick McHugh, GAINcast 171 with Johnny Parkes, and GAINcast 114 with Finn Gundersen. We also shared some of our own perspectives on talent development on GAINcast 79 and pathways on GAINcast 160. Vern has written about long-term athlete development on several occasions. You can read more here and here. James Marshall also wrote about the problem with pathways. The HMMR Classroom also has some great resources on the topic including Video Lesson 18: Long term athlete development with Steve Myrland, as well as some great practical examples such as the GAIN Video 16: Philadelphia Union Warmup with Bill Knowles.
Good training sessions have a flow. A flow in intensity, a flow in organization, and they help athletes find a flow state as well. On this week's podcast we sit down with Steve Myrland to exchange ideas on session planning and a few tricks we all have to optimize training session planning and execution.
