Chapter 1What is SleepIn the intriguing book "Sleep" by Nick Littlehales, readers are invited to rethink their approach to rest. Littlehales, a sports sleep coach, dismantles the traditional eight-hour sleep myth and introduces the revolutionary concept of the sleep cycle system. The R90 technique, as he calls it, suggests personalizing cycles to vastly enhance the quality of sleep. Not only does the book dive into how to structure these cycles, but it also offers practical tips on creating the ideal sleep environment and habits, influenced by Littlehales' work with top athletes. This engaging guide transforms sleep from a nightly challenge into a dynamic performance tool, promising readers not just rest, but rejuvenation and peak human performance. Whether you're a professional athlete or a usual worker, "Sleep" unlocks the secrets to turning rest into your greatest ally.Chapter 2 Meet the Writer of SleepNick Littlehales, in his discourse on sleep, effectively employs a clear, engaging, and persuasive writing style to discuss its significance. His language is accessible yet authoritative, ensuring that concepts relating to sleep science are comprehensible to a broad audience. Littlehales often uses vivid imagery and practical examples, enhancing the relatability and impact of his messages. This approach not only helps in conveying the intricate details of sleep mechanics but also emphasizes its pivotal role in overall health and well-being. His ability to intertwaddle personal anecdotes with scientific data adds a personal touch that connects with readers, making the subject matter resonate on a deeper emotional level.Chapter 3 Deeper Understanding of SleepSleep, a universal and essential human activity, has profoundly influenced literature, culture, and society in various ways. Influence on Literature:Sleep has been a significant theme in literature across centuries and has often been used metaphorically to explore subjects like death, ignorance, and oblivity, or rejuvenation, and enlightenment. 1. Shakespeare's works often delve into the theme of sleep, from the chaotic sleep patterns in "Macbeth," symbolizing guilt and torment, to the rejuvenating sleep in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" that resolves the play's conflicts and symbolizes renewal. 2. Romantic poetry such as by Samuel Taylor Coleridge or John Keats often equates sleep to a state of peace or escapism, reflective of their larger themes of nature and sublime experiences.3. Modern literature sees sleep as both a plot and a narrative device. For example, in science fiction, sleep is explored in the context of suspended animation (cryosleep) in interstellar travel narratives. Influence on Culture:Cultural perceptions of sleep have shifted significantly throughout history and differ markedly across societies:1. Ancient cultures such as in Greece and Rome had divinities dedicated to sleep, like Hypnos, emphasizing its importance to the human condition.2. Industrial Revolution marked a drastic change in sleep patterns as societies adopted a more regimented time structure to suit factory work schedules, moving away from the segmented sleep patterns of pre-industrial times.3. 21st-century technology and culture face challenges like blue light from screens affecting sleep cycles, yet there's a growing cultural trend emphasizing the importance of sleep, evidenced by the rise in popularity of sleep trackers and a market surge in products like weighted blankets and specialized mattresses aimed at improving sleep quality. Impact on Society:1. Psychological and Health Implications: Contemporary research underscores sleep's critical role in memory retention, emotional regulation, and cognitive abilities, influencing educational approaches and workplace policies.2. Rest and recovery is hugely important for us all, especially highly motivated and driven people.  In this bitesized episode, I chat with Nick Littlehales, a Sleep Coach to many elite sports performers.  Nick and I discuss sleep trackers and the upside to using them.  He also talks about orthosomnia, which describes individuals who become overly concerned or obsessed with tracking their sleep, resulting in heightened anxiety towards their sleeping patterns. Key Learning Points: Orthosomnia refers to a situation where people rely heavily on sleep tracking technology and aim to achieve perfect sleep. This can lead to stress and anxiety, similar to the athlete who tracks too complex or unhelpful data when they perform. Maintaining a balanced approach to sleep tracking is essential. Maybe they'll even talk about the time Gwensanity swept the Rio Olympics, or one of the many amazing sprint finishes in tri history (which mostly seem to involve Lionel Sanders these days)   Here's what a lack of sleep does to your cycling performance - and how to improve the quality of yours Improving your sleep could provide the single biggest boost to your cycling performance it's possible to make by legal means. Though it was arguably made famous as a “marginal gain” when Team Sky (now Ineos Grenadiers) started carting their own mattresses with them at the Tour de France, sleep may in fact be a maximal gain – it really is that fundamental in building fitness and maintaining health. So how can you make sure you're getting the optimum dose of the most potent legal performance enhancer known to cycling humanity? Nick Littlehales, a sleep coach who has worked with British Cycling to help elite riders understand what happens when we sleep and why it's specifically important for cyclists. “The simple fact is, we should be allocating over 30 per cent of every 24 hours to a defined recovery process,” says Littlehales. “Everything gets repaired when we sleep, which means consistent sleep deprivation diminishes every pillar of human performance, not only muscular and respiratory recovery.”   It's while we sleep that most testosterone and human growth hormone is released, more than in any other phase in each 24-hour cycle. Furthermore, the stress hormone cortisol decreases, cells and muscles are repaired, and our heart and cardiovascular system get the chance to rest. There is a lack of hard evidence around sleep and sports performance, but preliminary studies have suggested that sleep deprivation may also be linked with accelerated muscle atrophy when in a calorie deficit.   “You need to listen to your body,” Littlehales adds. “Cyclists want to be continually pushing their boundaries and sometimes hours of sleep are perceived as a waste of time. But you need a balance, and you need consistent and sustainable levels of recovery.”   What are Continuous Glucose Monitors? Explaining their use, the ban, and Faulkner's DSQ "The fans don't want to see Formula One in bike racing, they want surprises, they want unpredictability," Rogers told Cycling Weekly(opens in new tab). "We feel that putting such powerful information into the hands of younger riders is taking away a skill - deciding when you need to eat and learning about your body [...] It shouldn't be a completely automated process where every decision is being taken by technology."   What's New in the 303: Nationwide E-Bike Tax Credit Bill Returns to Congress Leading bike industry advocate PeopleForBikes is asking supporters of the legislation to sign an online petition.   The Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment Act first arrived in Congress in 2021. Like most bills that come to America's legislative chambers, it never passed into law. But five politicians and bike industry advocates hope that 2023 will be the year Americans get tax credits for buying electric bicycles, according to a statement from industry advocate PeopleForBikes.   For the bill's sponsors, getting more cars off the road is a clear win for reducing reliance on fossil fuels.   “Transitioning to a clean energy economy includes changing the way we get around. That means transit, rail, and electric buses, cars, and bikes. Our bill will make it more affordable for working people to buy an e-bike and help get cars off the road,” said Senator Brian Schatz, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development.   Other bill supporters include Representatives Jimmy Panetta (California), Earl Blumenauer (Oregon), Mike Thompson (California), and Adam Schiff (California).   E-bikes parked for a sharing program An office worker takes an e-bike from the bicycle sharing programs that have become common in many cities; (photo/Shutterstock) Bill: $1,500 Credit for E-Bike Purchase The E-BIKE Act hasn't really changed from its 2021 version, according to PeopleForBikes.   It proposes a refundable 30% tax credit for purchasing an electric bicycle — up to a $1,500 credit for new bicycles that cost less than $8,000. The credit would be allowed once per individual every three years or twice for a joint-return couple buying two electric bicycles.   There's one addition to the 2023 bill, however: income caps. These limits parallel the electric vehicle tax credit caps. That means no tax credit for those with an annual salary of $150,000 for single filers, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 for those filing jointly. The bill also mandates a report from the IRS after two years to understand the distribution of the credit by income tax bracket and adjust for equity in the future, according to PeopleForBikes.   An electric bicycle tax credit was included in the House-approved Build Back Better Act in 2021. But legislators cut the provision when negotiations resulted in a new bill called the Inflation Reduction Act.   “The IRA is the largest climate policy package in American history, but to quickly and effectively take action on reducing emissions, Congress must consider the E-BIKE Act as an essential and complementary policy,” PeopleForBikes wrote.   Community Public Service Announcement Call to all local race directors TriDot's Value - Community Who Cares for Each Other; Be good Citizens TriDot Local Event Ambassadors are offering to be First Race Orientation Guides FROG to anyone self-reporting to be their first triathlon. If you're Mentally Tough you don't need to sleep you can simply push through… Wrong! The mentally tough person, as research suggests is more likely to deal with fatigue better than a mentally sensitive person however they do need to sleep. Being committed to your goals, making sacrifices, taking challenges head on and dealing with pressure requires a clear head, focus and perspective, as well as adequate rest and recovery.   In this episode, I chat with Nick Littlehales, a well respected Sleep Coach to many elite sports performers.  Nick goes on to share more on the topic of sleep, where he tells you about his experiences supporting Manchester United and Arsenal football clubs, as well as the England National Team.  We also touch on other sports and the intricacies that need to be considered when you think of sleep and recovery.  Key Learning Points: At Manchester United I was with the club and exploring myths and misunderstandings about sleep, where I looked to redefine their approach to recovery. Understanding your sleep chronotype is important. Focusing on circadian rhythms can be beneficial. Tracking and collecting data can be helpful but it can also cause anxiety and added stress. Napping is very helpful to remain fresh and focused, aiding your decision making and recovery. Consider your environment and think about light, dark and temperature exposure can improve your sleep quality. Nick Littlehales - World's first sleep coach, busting the 8-hour sleep myth!Nick Littlehales went from a slumberland sales executive to the world's first-ever sleep coach with Manchester United. Alex Fergeson had heard of his groundbreaking ideas about sleep and performance and brought him in seeking the marginal gains that make all the difference. Which they did and Nick was present for the class of 1992 treble-winning side! Following the success his sleep coaching skills had achieved in professional football, Nick was asked to become the sleep coach for the Team GB cycling team, which produced one of the greatest ever cycling performances in the 2012 Olympics. But it gets better, Nick was then instrumental in the marginal gains philosophy that Sir David Brailsford brought to Team Sky in a bid to be the first-ever British team to win the Tour De France, which they did.And if there was a symbol of this philosophy it was seeing the rider's mattresses being ferried from hotel to hotel to optimize their sleep. This was Nick's idea!Nick has a brilliant story and tons of wisdom to share, you are going to love this one!Alright let's do this,Andy https://youtu.be/GXZ6iXgmw5A

Jenny Thompson - Why growing your own vegetables is our greatest well-being toolWhen I first read the ‘Blue Zones: 9 Lessons For Living Longer, by People Who Have Lived the Longest'' by Dan Buettner, which explores the pockets of people who live the longest, healthy and thriving lives, I noticed a trend. Many of these healthy outliers, who were fit as fiddles into their 90's and beyond all grew their own vegetables. This observation sat in my mind for years, until I met with Nick Littlehales, the world's leading sleep coach.. Nick, who will also appear on the podcast,  and I started to talk about the benefits of natural daylight on the body. This was followed by a workshop with our ongoing self-development community the MBG with the chairman of the UK's forest bathing committee Gary Evans, who explained the almost unbelievable health benefits of time spent in nature. Next, I reflected on my podcast chat with Dr Alan Desmond in the first episode, who explored the science and benefits behind plant-based nutrition. Then, finally, the penny dropped.Growing your own fruit and veg could be one of the best activities that we could all possibly partake in. And that's exactly what Jenny and I will explore in this episode. Jenny's Instagram, The_Organic_Allotment_Girl is one of my favourites. Jenny's posts inspire me every day and she has such a great story that I can't wait to share it with you all.You will love this chat, and I am positive you might even be tempted to take part in the latest wellbeing craze and grow your own. Alright Let's do this.

Very soon into our conversation, Nick talks about the need for downtime and recovery. He goes on to share his journey so far and the paradigm shift that he's starting to see in relation to how people view sleep and recovery. Nick talks about there being no budget for sleep in a lot of sports and businesses that he's gone into. Sleep and recovery are relatively new concepts compared to diet and exercise. It's fascinating to hear Nick explain chronotypes and the impact that this has and can have on our sleep and recovery. For those not familiar with chronotypes, essentially we are talking about whether you are an 'am'er or a pm'er'! In simple terms; are you a morning person or not! The book In Nick's book are a number of steps including; - Circadian rhythms - Chronotypes - Cycles not hours - Pre & post sleep routines - Activity and recovery harmony Sleep doesn't have to be a challenge or issue for you anymore. In this episode we focus on Sleep and its essential role in our health, well-being and performance. I speak with Mr Nick Littlehales, who has spent over two decades working with elite athletes, professionals and sleep deprived people like you and me to educate, advocate and empower them to take control of their own sleep and therefore health and performance.  We discuss his serendipitous transition to this role,   from senior executive for an international bedding company to coaching elite athletes and serving on the UK sleep council.  We discuss his book "Sleep" and his practical application of the ever emerging science of sleep.  We discuss the importance of the biological clock and knowing your own sleep/wake habits, our sleep environment and how we can schedule and train ourselves to make good sleep a habit, not a source of further stress and anxiety. http://www.sportsleepcoach.comhttp://www.instagram.com/_sportsleepcoachhttp://www.facebook.com/sportsleepcoachDisclaimer: The content in this podcast is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Elite Sport Sleep Coach and author Nick Littlehales has been helping athletes and teams competing in the world's most competitive leagues improve their performance through sleep for over 20 years. With the necessity of sleep transcending any one individual sport he's worked with an incredible list of elite clients that include Christiano Ronaldo, British Cycling, Team Sky (Tour De France), Formula 1 Racers, NFL Players, numerous Premier League Soccer teams and beyond. Focused on redefining human recovery, his goal is to provide elite athletes and individuals with a simple and achievable technique that can be applied to improve sleep. His book Sleep, which has made the topic of improving sleep and the quality of your life approachable and applicable. Today, his technique is known as the R90 Technique and Nick introduces listeners to the first of the 7 Key Sleep Recovery Indicators. These indicators when addressed can have a profound impact on improving sleep. We discuss the role of the Circadian Rhythm and how in present day society we're finding new and inventive ways to mess this up. The impact of your chronotype and how being an “owl” or a “lark” can have a substantial impact on your optimal routine. The idea that we should be paying closer attention to sleep cycles, rather than just a broad recommendation of hours per night. Why people not getting the appropriate levels of recovery through sleep is preventing them from achieving their personal best. The way in which our brain and body function are completely synced to this planet. Why sleep is the last part of your day that you should sacrifice and how counterintuitively we can actually do more by doing less. Speaking to sport and beyond Nick attests that sleep quite frankly creates more resilient human beings. When looking at training for sport, alongside training and nutrition sleep needs to be considered an equal, if not prioritized as the most critical of the three pillars of athletic success. Amidst this albeit slow, yet increasing awareness within sport of the impact of sleep he warns to be wary of the flood of technologies hitting the market promising to help improve the natural practice. He expands as to why sleep is something that we should be able to do naturally if we can only get out of our own way. He further explains why Blue Light is undeservedly getting a bad rap and how in actuality it is when of the greatest resources humans have at their disposal. He recounts his experience working with British Cycling as part of their goal to put a Brit atop the podium of the Tour De France within 5 years through the revolutionary approach of aggregated marginal gains. How sleep became one of the many underserved areas where the team could find an overlooked advantage and the extent that he and the performance staff for Team Sky would go to in order to optimize the sleep environment for riders when traveling and subsequent success and domination by the team that followed. We wrap up discussing the impact of time zones on one of his NFL clients. The underappreciated role natural light plays in our lives and wellbeing. Lastly, sure to spark a number of uncomfortable conversations between couples everywhere, he explains why humans can sleep anywhere in any environment, but they were never meant to sleep together.   Mentioned In the Show: Sleep by Nick Littlehales: https://amzn.to/2VJaUNF Follow Nick: Instagram:  @_sportsleepcoach Website: https://www.sportsleepcoach.com/ Twitter: @sportsleepcoach Follow The Professional Athlete Podcast with Ken Gunter: Instagram: @the_professionalathlete Website: Kengunter.com Produced By: Justin Gunter, Ken Gunter Music By: Justin Gunter, Ken Gunter
