Ever wish you could quit your job and sell your house to live on a boat and run your dream business? For most of us, it's just a fantasy – but for coach, mentor and video marketer Jim Palmer, it's real life. In 2016, following a termination at work and a cancer diagnosis, Jim, his wife and their four kids decided to follow their dreams – by selling their home in Philadelphia and moving onto a house boat. Living his dream lifestyle and running his dream business, Jim now teaches others how to do the same. Today, Jim joins me to talk about saying yes to your dreams, why working with a coach can be invaluable, strategies for success he provides to his clients, and why perfectionism holds you back. “There's an expression: Perfectionism or perfectionist is a label you wear. So it doesn't have to be your fault. In other words, what holds most people back from kind of pulling the trigger, launching, writing, publishing, whatever is, ‘I'm afraid of what people will say if it's not perfect.' People become worried. … Make a decision as an entrepreneur, author, coach, speaker, whatever, just choose that you wanna be judged on the information that you share and not the imperfect way in which you share it. I've told so many of my clients that, and they're like, wow, that really works.” – Jim (08:47) Jim also shares his techniques for overcoming challenges, and talks about how he helps other small business owners and entrepreneurs create their own dream lives. “I believe that everybody is here for a reason. I believe we're here to serve each other. I think everybody has a God-given skill or talent. So you can either just use that in your private life, or if you happen to use that skill or talent and make it a business, become a small business owner. That's good too, because when you fully take control of your life – and that's what I mean by the dream business dream lifestyle – the best way you can control your own life and destiny is to actually create it yourself, create your own economy, create your own future.” – Jim (27:47) In This Episode (03:17) Taking the leap to become “boat people” (05:49) What if you just say yes? Welcome to another episode of the podcast, today we are going to talk about time. In working with my cookbook coaching clients, mastermind groups, and on my own projects, I realize the importance of planning my time to get the most out of my week. I've always had a pretty consistent pattern for activities done on a weekly basis, but use care when planning tasks for work, book writing, free time, and family activities. Planning ahead of time keeps projects moving along in my business and sets up the time to enjoy activities with family and friends. I once heard the analogy that a calendar with a well-planned week is like a river. It has strong banks, a certain direction, and flows quickly with energy and focus. A week that isn't well planned is like a lake – big, open, and lazy – beautiful to look at, but lacking direction and focus. Lakes are nice for weeks of vacation but in order to schedule time for everything I enjoy I prefer to use my calendar like a river. Each week the flow takes me where I want to go, and not where it wants to take me. Make decisions and move forwardThe best thing we can all do to become more in charge of our time is to decide ahead of time. Plan for tomorrow and the next day, today. Decide ahead of time when you are going to work, eat, answer email, shower, exercise, read. Decide what projects you are going to focus on. Decide what you are going to say no to. Decide, decide, decide. So much of our time is wasted in indecision. Your ability to be successful is directly related to making decisions (and sticking with the decisions you make.) Read more in the book Decide: The Ultimate Success Trigger by Jim Palmer. Plan your perfect weekOne reason calendars fail us is that we don't schedule the time to do things we enjoy. Want to go out with your mate on a Thursday night each week? Then put it on your calendar. Want to walk the dog each evening? Or relax for a half-hour every afternoon? Read a book a week, or learn to crochet? Put these fun things on your calendar. Honor your planIf you don't hold yourself accountable, no one will. This is especially true for business owners. Do what you say you're going to do when you make your weekly plan. You deserve not to let yourself down. Complete itemsDon't quit before you finish. Trust yourself to finish. Get started, get busy, and finish or close the deal. Quitting is failing ahead of time. If you want to write a book and you think I can't do it, it's too hard, no one will like it, so I just remember that you are getting the results your thoughts created. You don't do it, it seems hard, and no one will like it because it's never been published. Treat time like a friend Everyone thinks that a lack of time holds them back from their cookbook writing dreams.II totally get it. This is what we are led to believe. We've got no time. We're crazy busy. Time isn't on our side. What if we flipped the conversation. And we treated time like an old friend. A friend who is always by our side. Ready to serve our every need. That's what time does you know. It's always here, right now, at the exact moment we need it. When it's time to take a walk or pick up dinner from the nearest restaurant, time presents itself. What if we talked to time like an old friend. It's so great to see you. I've missed you. I'm sorry it's been so long since we last spoke. What if we admitted we have plenty of time to do what we really wanted. And that time is on our side. Because it is. And it's always presenting itself, patiently waiting for us to use it to our advantage or for the advantage of others. It gives and it gives. What if we started to see time as truly the one resource we have that really matters. Time is here to help us grow and evolve. Time is here to help us get our cookbooks published. Because when time isn't around anymore, then our dreams aren't either. For now, all we have is time. New minutes. New hours. New days. New months. New years. And that's a beautiful thing. I show you how to generate all the leads you can possibly handle by evaluating your existing marketing and showing you how to dramatically reduce or eliminate the money you’re currently spending while significantly increasing both your response and conversion rates. I can typically double or triple your current response rate...but a 50 to 100 times increase isn’t out of the question. And best of all, the strategies I'll teach you will continue to work for you month after month for as long as you're in business. But listen, I know talk is cheap... and I know that you’ve heard these types of claims before, so put me to the test and let me prove that everything I've just said is 100% true. If you will invest just 45 minutes with me, I promise that I will find you at least $10,000 in additional revenue that you can begin to put in your pocket this month... and every month moving forward. We can do this 45 minute session over the phone as an added convenience to you... and I promise during the time we're together that I won't try to sell you a thing. But there is one catch. I'm writing a book detailing the strategies I use to find $10,000 for any small business owner, and my publisher has asked me to include a few additional case studies in my book. I would ask those of you who take me up on my offer to allow me to document your results and use them in my book, either under your real name or anonymously. Jim Palmer is a business & marketing expert and an in-demand business coach and consultant. Though he started from humble beginnings and spent many years in corporate, he turned his prior experiences into valuable assets which have helped him build many highly profitable & lucrative businesses including “The Dream Business Coach,” No Hassle Newsletters, Stick Like Glue Radio and lots more. However, things were not always so good. At one point Jim was unemployed for over a year and spent at least 14 months fighting for his life as a result of a cancer diagnosis. Rather than give up and feel sorry for himself, Jim dug deep and applied his faith and prayed for healing, guidance & direction on what his next move would be. While recovering from cancer, he launched a newsletter writing business. He noted that the company generated no revenues for over a year. To make ends meet and provide food, clothing, and shelter for his young family, he worked the late night and early morning shifts stocking shelves at Target while spending his afternoons building his fledgling business. It was a humbling experience but necessary because he believed that men and women should do whatever it takes to provide for their families regardless of their situation. These days Jim spends his time working on his numerous business ventures and helping budding entrepreneurs launch their dream business. He runs the Stick Like Glue Radio podcast where he interviews many experts on various topics and has authored several books including Decide: The Ultimate Success Trigger and Just Say Yes: Create Your Dream Business and Live Your Dream Lifestyle all of which are listed on Amazon.com. Wondering how you can live your ideal life? In this podcast episode, you’ll learn exactly how! Our guest for this episode is Jim Palmer, the bestselling author of several books including Decide: The Ultimate Success Trigger and he’s the founder of the Dream Business Academy. Jim sent me a copy of his book and I was quickly blown away by it’s value and Jim’s story. When Jim started his business, it took an entire year before he got his first client. During this phase, he nearly burnt the candle from both ends by taking a job at Target where he showed up at 4 am to stack shelves. Even when he felt like his business was successful, he got a wake-up call from his wife when she asked when they’d go on vacation. When she asked, it had been five years since the last vacation, and even though Jim was crushing it, he felt like his business wouldn’t function without him. Decide is the wake-up call that you need for your business. It’s more than a mindset book. It’s the book that finally gets you up and taking action on your dreams. Jim’s goal is to allow people to live the life of their dreams rather than to just work for the sake of making a living. Learn: —How to develop the abundance mindset —The best way to learn —How to accomplish what you set out to do —How people view value —How to personalize a situation so you get yourself out of your comfort zone —How to take action even if you don’t feel like it Key Links from the Show: www.getjimpalmer.com - Jim’s website Decide to get Decide today!

In today's episode, Mark Podolsky, the Land Geek talks to Jim Palmer, a marketing, business builder, and in-demand coach. Jim is the founder of the the Dream Business Academy, Dream Business Coaching, and Mastermind Program. He is also the host of Dream Business TV watched by thousands of entrepreneurs and small businesses. He hosts Stick Like Glue Radio, a weekly podcast based on Jim's own unique brand of smart marketing and business building strategies. He is internationally known as the Newsletter Guru and creator of No Hassle Newsletters and No Hassle Social Media. Jim's 30 years of practical business experience and his kind of staying power is anchored on powerful customer relationships. As an old school thinker, he believes that getting up every day, delivering value, and focusing on service first will give you a longer lasting and profitable business. Jim set out to be a Vice President by the time he was 40. He achieved it but when he turned 41, his position was eliminated and he was unemployed. At that time, he had four teenagers to support and mortgages and bills to pay. He suffered through 15 months of unemployment and was even diagnosed with cancer. This brought him clarity and he started his first business because he was at a low point in his life and the only place to go from there was up. His first year of business was revenue free but it eventually caught hold and took off, becoming a 6-figure business. After 5 years, he started all over again. He created No Hassle Newsletters. 7 years ago, he started his own coaching business. Mark mentioned speaking to The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur author, Mike Michalowicz. He has written other books, including the Pumpkin Plan and Profit First. When an entrepreneur starts a business, there's a lot of time but no money. However, when the business gets bigger, there is money but no time. Only about 5% of entrepreneurs are able to get systems and processes into place, allowing them to be free. Jim's wife jolted him back to reality when she asked him when they were going to go on vacation – something they were unable to do during the lean years. The reality of time freedom hit him. Then, he hired his first virtual assistant. Jim brought up an interesting concept, “When I,” which is about moving your goal past when you should be investing in the future and the future company you want to have. The fastest way to get there is by getting a coach or working with somebody with experience. Another point Jim brought up is automating his business and documenting everything to a point where if something happens to him, his wife could effectively take over. Mark has done the same thing. Putting systems and procedures in place will allow you the flexibility of either continuing your business or selling it to a new owner who can then take over two days later and continue to run it. That's a big part of getting top dollar for your business. For Mark, it's in a Dropbox folder named, “In Case of Death.” Jim's journey to becoming a prolific marketer and author of six books started with his first book. From this experience, he has learned that you don't need to be perfect. A lot of people suffer from perfectionism, which prevent them from doing things they can be doing. Jim's advice is to decide you want to be judged on the value of the information and content you're providing. Being his authentic self has been liberating for him. Just be a prolific curator of the content. The content draws people to you. You just have to remember that people consume content in a number of different ways. Adam Grant's book, the “Originals,” talks about people like Mozart and Bach who create original work. They kept creating work and as they did this they created masterpieces! Getting stuck because of perfectionism is something you can avoid. Good is good enough and you can always go back and iterate your past work. Mark calls it, “embracing the suck!” What's important is that you have to be your authentic self because it's liberating. Putting yourself out there will attract the right kind of people and repel people you're not meant to do business with. You also need to be immune to criticism. You will not have a shortage of people who are going to tell you that you should be doing things differently. Jim mentions a hater who commented about his video where he also featured his dog. The hater said when Jim looked at his dog, he was disrespecting the audience. One way to deal with it is like water off a duck's back. Grant Cordone's take on this is if you're not getting haters, you're not working hard enough. Even if you only have 30% of your audience that's going to love you, you can already make a nice living off them. One of the main things you need to do to be successful in business is to cure a pain and solve a problem. Starting with his No Hassle Newsletter, several other businesses came from that. The ideas usually came from customers who wanted more help. Jim says you shouldn't overthink. That's what gets you stuck. He doesn't celebrate initial transactions but rather, he celebrates lifetime customers. It's your job to find out all the other ways you can help them enrich their lives. In dealing with haters, Jim asks his assistant about the background of that particular hater and if no business has been generated out of that hater, he just hits the unsubscribe button. He will not put up with being disrespected. When asked if Mark had the Best Passive Income Model, Jim says he's got one heck of a killer model. More importantly, Jim pointed out Mark's clarity, enthusiasm, and passion for the business. He also pointed out vital things you need to succeed in business such as the processes and systems that are in place and that Mark knows his numbers. Since buying and selling raw land is not something the big companies are interested in, Mark is essentially flying under the radar too! Jim also applauded Mark's abundance mentality. “Sharks swim in dense packs where there's ample food supply,” a successful person once told Jim. Mark says that there's always room for innovation similar to Cirque de Soleil's model. They took the zoo, combined it with theater, and created a completely new market segment. TIP OF THE WEEK Jim: If you want to make a boatload of money, stop answering your phone. You will earn significantly more income for who you are than what you do. It's about your positioning in the marketplace. As a coach, it doesn't help him to answer his phone like an operator. If people jump through hoops to be able to talk to him, he has already positioned himself because it now becomes a big deal to speak with him. You also want to have someone in your business, who will hold your feet to the fire so you can get things done and that is how you grow. Do what they did when they were where you are now. Head Trash - Everybody has head trash. This is all the thoughts, feelings, and how you think. This is often made up of self-limiting beliefs. - Head trash affects how people make decisions to invest, go forward and start a business. - When we have a fear issue, we tend to make up excuses. - At some point you have to stop being an impediment to your own growth and take care of business and do things that successful people do. What Successful People Do - Become a speaker, author, create videos, work with a coach, join a mastermind, and do your own live events. - Instead of growing your business 1:1 becoming a speaker gives you a chance to grow your business 1:many. Raising Prices - This is featured in the ‘Decide To Be Profitable' chapter. - A lot of people struggle with charging fees that they are actually worth. - You must be appropriately rewarded for the value that you are deliver to customers and clients. - Fees should be based on the value you are delivering rather than on an hourly rate. - It's also not the immediate hourly value but rather the years of learning, training, and experience leading up to that point that you are charging for. Outsourcing - There is a point in every business where you start gaining momentum and doing more of what your core services are. At that point it should translate into your high revenue generating activities. - Most entrepreneurs think they can do it cheaper, faster, and better than anybody. Good is Good Enough - Perfection is the enemy of progress. - If you strive to get everything done to perfection then nothing will get done. - Good is good enough doesn't mean you put out crappy work. It just means you push the ‘go' button sooner and ‘get it done.' - Wealth rewards risk and speed. You just have to start and get better as you go. Criticism - Criticism can also be a business crippler as everyone has an opinion and people aren't shy about sharing theirs (especially on social media.) - The only people who aren't criticized are people who aren't doing anything. - The filter Jim uses is by asking himself, “Do I know this person, trust them and do I value their opinion?” as well as “Is this someone who has earned the right to share this opinion?” - There will always be people who don't resonate with who you are and what you offer. You are not meant to do business with everyone. Wealth Rewards Risk and Speed - Your business loves speed. When things happen fast there is associated growth. - The faster you get things done and put out content the more able you are able to attract people to your business. Three Types of Risk - i) Savings account entrepreneur - ii) Stock Market entrepreneur - iii) Casino entrepreneur Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio!
