Happy Thanksgiving As is the custom here on the Deadpod, this Thanksgiving we feature an acoustic set and I think we are especially fortunate this year as this set is one of the very best such sets from 1970. From September 20, 1970 this set from the Fillmore East features both David Grisman and David Nelson on mandolin for much of the set, including a very unusual 'Big Railroad Blues' and an acoustic 'Truckin'. Jerry is in particular fine voice throughout, especially on 'To Lay Me Down'. If you are a fan of acoustic Dead this is a set to savor .. I hope you enjoy.. Quoted by Mary McCoy: At the age of 3, I knew I wanted to sing. When neighbors came to visit my mom and dad, I would get my little rocking chair and put it in the middle of the room and yodel throughout their visit. When I was 6 and 7 years old, mom and dad belonged to the Odd Fellows and Rebeccah Lodge and I would sing for them. Age age 11, I won my first talent contest. At 12, KMCO came on the air in 1951 and I started with it on a talent show. That day I was asked to record a 15-minute program in which I played my guitar and sang, after which, I followed up with my own record show. In 1955, I appeared on the Louisiana Hayride sharing the stage with Elvis Presley, Jim Reeves, The Browns and others. My dreams were to sing, have my own DJ show and make records. In 1960, I did make my first record “Deep Elem Blues” and followed with others on the Jin label. I signed a contract in 1967 with Gabe Tucker and recorded many singles and duets with Jimmy Copeland. My dreams were finally fulfilled with the recording of my new gospel CD, “Through the Storm”. God has blessed me and made my dreams come true.

This week we go back to some good ol' Grateful Dead from December 1970. The boys are young and full of spunk on this one as they run through some of their early numbers. Pigpen is in fine form here and the 'Hard to Handle' is classic. The 'Deep Elem' has a unique and very pleasant arrangement to my ears. 'Cumberland Blues' showcases Phil's talents as always and a great China>Rider could be the highlight of the set. For a tape from 1970 this one sounds really good, I hope you enjoy it! Happy Thanksgiving! As is our tradition, I present an acoustic Dead show for your pleasure this Thanksgiving morning. While it is becoming difficult to find an acoustic set (in good quality) that I haven't presented before, this is a wonderful recording and while the songs will be familiar to you they are still a joy to listen to, I think. I thank you for your attention, your kind comments and your support. I do so hope that this finds you and the ones you love healthy and safe, and that our world not simply return to 'normal' but becomes more peaceful and kind for all of us.
Here we are in October already?!! What an odd and unhappy year.. well I thought I'd try to brighten things a bit by paying homage to the acoustic sets the band played 40 years ago during the month of October 1980.. This week's Deadpod features one of those, a fine recording of the acoustic set from October 11, 1980 at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco CA. While there's not a great deal of surprises here, the recording is very nice and warm and the performance is as well. While I often prefer to save these for the holidays, I think this is a good time to break out the fine china, as I sometimes put it.. I hope you enjoy. This week's Deadpod celebrates the season with a show from December 23, 1970 at the Winterland in San Francisco CA. I have three different sources for this show, each of them slightly different - I decided to put two of them together. I'm sure the order is probably not right, but the recordings each sound quite nice and I'm hoping that you'll enjoy them this week, as we celebrate the holidays and the fact that soon the days will start to grow lighter each day. Here's the combined setlists: Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 12/23/70 - Wednesday first tape: Hard To Handle Candyman Me & My Uncle Cold Rain and Snow Second tape: Deep Elem Blues ; Beat It On Down The Line ; I’m A King Bee ; Me And My Uncle ; Cumberland Blues Me & Bobby McGee Dire Wolf Good Lovin' Casey Jones> Uncle John's Band Benefit for the Montessori School and Bear You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod122019.mp3 (Sorry about the duplicated Uncle - didn't feel like trying to chop up the sets..) I hope you enjoy this fine serving of classic Dead, and hopefully enjoy some relaxing times with friends and family. thank you all for your support. I wish you all health and happiness this year.
Happy Thanksgiving! As always we present an acoustic performance from the Dead for your Thanksgiving listening and relaxing pleasure. This one is from June 4, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco California. A fine recording, with a minimum of flaws, I hope you enjoy this as I wish for you a peaceful and happy holiday. Happy Winter Solstice! and of course Merry Christmas.......... While this is the last Deadpod before the holiday, I will naturally include some great acoustic Dead music for your enjoyment. However since it is also a few days before the holiday, I thought I would break with tradition a bit and include some electric Dead as well. The show I selected for this week really dictated this choice, its a fine show that was performed back on April 3rd, 1970 at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati Ohio. I bring you part one this week. Unlike most acoustic sets, this show features an acoustic set right smack in the middle.. so rather than try to rearrange the songs I thought I would bring you the first part this week and finish up next Friday night. Some of the highlights here include a great jam in 'China Cat'>'I Know You Rider' , Pigpen on 'Hard to Handle' and Katie Mae', and the first ever preformance of 'Candyman' . Don't miss the alternative lyrics on a nice acoustic 'Friend of the Devil'. Our annual Christmas Deadpod features a very entertaining acoustic show from the summer of 1970. While it is true that the mandolin and the guitars are higher in the mix than optimal, I am of the opinion that the quality of the recording, and the originality of the set list, make this a worthwhile pastime on a cold winter's day. I do hope you agree. I wish for all of you peace and happiness and hope that this holiday weekend finds you with the people you love, for that is the greatest of all gifts. Merry Christmas .. Happy Hanukkah This year's holiday edition of the Deadpod features one of the best acoustic performances of 1970. This takes place at the Fillmore East in New York City on September 20th, 1970. The acoustic set, which we present today, is not only a fine performance but also a fine recording. David Grisman plays mandolin on 'Friend of the Devil' and David Nelson joins with another mandolin on a slow soulful, 'Big Railroad Blues', both continue through Ripple. There is some speculation that Jerry plays piano on 'To Lay Me Down', clearly a wonderful highlight here. Nelson and Grisman are back with mandolins on a fine Rosalie McFall, following a rare acoustic 'Truckin'. I love 'Cumberland Blues' here.. but then again I usually love this song.. Jerry plays an electic during 'New Speedway' but the vibe is very acoustic. 'Brokedown Palace' provides a fitting conclusion to the set.. Following, I decided to feature one more cut from Holly Bowling's beautiful work 'Better Left Unsung'.. this is 'Eyes of the World (Louieville KY 61874).. it speaks for itself.. Let''s roll into March with a really excellent show from the Spring of 1981. This one comes to us from New York City, March 9th, 1981 Madison Square Garden. From start to finish this is a most excellent show, one of the best in the earlier Brett years. Here in the first set all the songs are tight and well-played. I particularly enjoy the 'Althea' and 'Bird Song' but we are treated to a most welcome 'Deep Elem Blues' and an unusual 'Ramble On Rose -> El Paso'.. one of those unusual combinations the band was experimenting with this year. Next week we'll hear the marvelous second set from this beauty...
