"Elza Soares ultrapassou as fronteiras da música brasileira", disse o New York Times.

Our guest this week is podcaster and producer Tilt Araiza, who joins Tyler to talk about Michael Bentine and his ground-breaking television series It's A Square World. Written by Bentine and John Law, It's A Square World ran on the BBC from 1960-64 totalling 57 episodes and was a clear influence on later comedy series, notably Monty Python's Flying Circus. As well as Bentine the programme featured the likes of Clive Dunn, Frank Thornton, Deryck Guyler, John Bluthal, Benny Lee, Dick Emery, Ronnie Barker and Sherie Winton. It won the Press Prize at the Rose d'Or Festival in Montreux in 1963 and scooped a Light Entertainment BAFTA award the year before. This week's show is roughly divided into two parts: the second half mainly focuses on It's A Square World but firstly Tilt & Tyler talk more generally about Bentine's extraordinary life. Having grown up enjoying many of the trappings of privilege his early years were marked by an inability to communicate properly, thanks to some avoidable home-surgery on his tonsils. Later he faced innumerable barriers to entry into the Second World War due to his Peruvian roots and when he finally did enter the services he was almost killed due to a mistake during a routine typhoid vaccination and was in a coma for several weeks. He later recovered and joined Military Intelligence and was among those who helped liberate Bergen-Belsen. Despite all this he retained an optimistic, positive disposition and swept away on the currents of his imagination and facility for invention he found success as a comedian and performer in the late nineteen-forties. He met Harry Secombe who in turn introduced him to some friends of his, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers, and the seeds of The Goon Show were planted. Bentine would later go on to find fame on television with shows like It's A Square World and also his childrens' series such as the much-loved Potty Time in the seventies. A committed believer in the paranormal he became President of the Association For the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena and somehow found time to sail yachts, shoot, practise archery and go on hovercraft expeditions up the Amazon. As for It's A Square World, producer Barry Lupino told the Radio Times in 1961: “It has been called a diversion for the low in brow – but I wonder? The topics are lofty enough. What could be more uplifting than the opening of the Royal Academy?... Nor of course shall we overlook the situation in Volcania, of the effects of children's television on the adult viewer, and the arrival and departure of distinguished personages in the great metropolis.” The series also has the distinction of likely producing the first Dr Who parody – with Clive Dunn turning up barely a month after DW began dressed in an unmistakably Hartnellesque fashion. All this and more is up for discussion in what is likely to be the first of a two part Bentine retrospective (Tilt will return next year).

How often have you heard an older person refer to themselves as being so many "years young?" What about those who blame a "senior moment" for the occasional memory lapse? These are examples of what the writer Priscilla Long describes as "toxic ageism." Oftentimes, she argues, ageist attitudes are perpetuated by the very people who're thriving in old age, but for some reason, view being old as a state of mind or body to be disavowed. Priscilla is a prolific and award-winning author of science, poetry and creative nonfiction. At the age of 79, her latest work, Dancing with the Muse in Old Age, focuses on what she calls "creative engagement" and "purposeful lifestyle traits" as a road map for the aging process. In this LLAMA podcast interview, the Seattle-based author argues that ageism "poisons creativity" and explains why society should stop thinking of older people as "decrepit".This episode was produced in association with Clinique La Prairie. Machine Head is the sixth and most commercially successful studio album Deep Purple ever produced. The band was coming off a two-year tour, and wanted to capture a sound closer to their live shows on the next studio effort. They booked the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio for the recording and booked time at the Montreux Casino. However, just before their studio time was to begin, a fire was started during a concert for Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, and the casino burned to the ground. They then attempted to record at a nearby theater, but this had to be abandoned due to noise complaints. Finally, they were able to secure time at the Grand Hotel in Montreux which had been closed for the winter, and recorded the album. The band did not set up in a ballroom, but at the end of a hallway, and had to communicate with the mobile studio via closed circuit TV.The album was both a critical and commercial success, topping the charts in many countries and landing at number 7 on the Billboard 200. It also produced many of the iconic Deep Purple songs and riffs.Wayne brings us this forerunner of prog rock and heavy metal. Highway StarThe opening track to the album is a killer anthem live and features the Hammond organ prominently. The guitar solo would gain notoriety, and the readers of Guitar World voted it number 15 on their list of "100 Greatest Guitar Solos." Smoke on the Water The opening riffs are amongst the most famous guitar riffs of all time. This song tells the story of the band's experience where they almost recorded at the Montreux Casino, but instead watched the building burn to the ground after a flare gun was shot off at the Mothers of Invention concert. The smoke was from the casino burning down, and the water was Lake Geneva.Pictures of Home This deeper cut describes the sights and images of the local area around Montreux, far away from home for Deep Purple. Space Truckin' This space themed anthem was inspired by the music from the 1960's "Batman" television series. The lyrics themselves are nonsense, but the riffs and the sci-fi vibe make this rocker a favorite. William Shatner covered this song on his album "Seeking Major Tom." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “The French Connection”Gene Hackman starred in this crime thriller which won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 44th Academy Awards in April, 1972. STAFF PICKS:Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll by Blue Oyster CultBruce's staff pick is the debut single from the debut self-titled Blue Oyster Cult album. While it did not chart, it would become one of their most famous anthems. Drummer Albert Bouchard is on vocals, and the lyrics explore the aftermath of nuclear war, using rock and roll as a metaphor for destruction. You Could Have Been a Lady by April Wine Rob brings us the leading single from the Canadian band's album "On Record." This is a cover originally released in 1971 by the British soul band Hot Chocolate. It would be April Wine's first hit, charting at number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.Back off Boogaloo by Ringo Starr Brian's staff pick is a non-album single Ringo Starr released in March 1972. Former bandmate George Harrison produced and helped write this song, and played guitar on the single. It was recorded shortly after Harrison and Starr appeared in the Concert for Bangladesh. Many consider it an attack on Paul McCartney's solo work at the time.Jambalaya (On the Bayou) by the Nitty Gritty Dirt BandWayne features a Cajun cover originally written by Hank Williams in 1952. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was a country rock group from Long Beach, California, and this cover appears on their sixth studio album. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Afro Strut by the Nite LitersWe close out this week's podcast with this funk and soul instrumental.

I mean, I get "good" at one song at an instrument and I think I'm a god... This guy took everything to a new level of intense playing, and never seemed to take his abilities for granted. Undoubtedly had so much more to give to this world.”“His control of tone, string volume, nuances, and basic effects made him a beast alone.....Let alone the fact he wrote all that music and performs it so cleanly...plus to do it all while singing VERY well is INSANE!”However, if you feel like dropping a tip to my cashapp, it keeps me able to do more, for you.Enjoy!

Nate Wilkins is enjoying a remarkable journey through life. The 68-year-old functional aging specialist is the co-founder of Ageless Workout, a Miami-based health, healing and wellness company that seeks to bridge the gap between fitness and medicine. The goal is to help people of all ages achieve their maximum potential. It is based on a lifestyle that Nate and his partner, Shebah Carfagna, have adopted to create a "tribe mentality" to health and fitness. They are also co-authors of Ageless Workout. In this interview Nate reflects on the highs - and lows - in his life - including a "brush with greatness" when he met Martin Luther King Jr. on the day he was baptized. He condemns ageist attitudes that depict older people as "decrepit" and enthuses about the joys of a full life, focussed on movement, positivity and purpose. ****This episode is brought to you in association with Clinique La Prairie. What Goes Around? So much! Today we are joined by an indie legend whose music proved as ethereal and inventive as it was catchy and intelligent. Miki Berenyi is the founder member of the iconic 4AD band Lush, she is a singer and songwriter famed for mixing together incredible soundscapes with catchy melodies. Their sound evolved from the art house of shoe gaze to the stadium sized bravado of Brit Pop but their aesthetic was always much more interesting than any label they were saddled with. Miki has now written a book about her life and times in Lush and beyond. It's a lot more than a standard name dropping reminiscence and speaks honestly and openly about the sometimes tragic events and emotions that shaped her life. Before we talk to Miki we chat to Jeanie Finley about her amazing music themed documentaries like Goth Cruise! We also discuss HOT music and the Montreux jazz festival's extortionate sandwich pricing. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
Produced by Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius Mark and I had a great time speaking to photographer Rob Brimson this week. He was with Po from Hipgnosis when the photos of YES band members on the inner gatefold sleeve of Going For The One were taken and he took the shot of Yes Tor which adorns the cover of Tormato. He also did a bit of informal modelling work… Rob was open and generous about the days when he was based at Hipgnosis' studios in London as well as his trip to Mountain Studios in Montreux and the story about the helicopter and the escape of the flying pig. Listen out for that one later. More Yes revelations are included in our conversation. It could all end in a heartbeat. Sometimes life itself, with its unpredictable path, can be the biggest motivator to change us for the better. Take Alan Carpenter. He was a fit 66-year-old, enjoying a hike on the US Pacific Crest, when his life suddenly imploded. A dramatic fall led to a stay in hospital and a long period of recuperation. It also prompted him to reassess his state of health - not only physical, but his mental and emotional wellbeing. It led to years of research, analyzing lifestyle interventions and longevity hacks, in search of positive long-term habits. He wrote a book about it; Choose Better, Live Better: Nine Healthy Choices that Nurture Body, Mind, and Spirit and in this LLAMA podcast interview Alan shares a graphic account of the moment everything changed and why he embarked on a quest to rejuvenate his life.****This episode is brought to you in association with Clinique La Prairie.
