It's clear: PlayStation's problems with Microsoft's in-motion purchase of Activision-Blizzard run deep. The financial implications are enormous, of course, but in going public with his dismay in potentially losing Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms beginning in 2028, CEO Jim Ryan illustrates Sony's concern is material enough that it's willing to take a PR beating to make its point. Our theory? They're simply trying to buy time as they continue to sort out their strategy and make sense of a growing consensus that doesn't necessarily cater to what they do best. Nonetheless, we discuss the wide-ranging, ongoing situation between Microsoft, Sony, Activision-Blizzard, and various global economic regulators that will make or break the deal. Other news this week includes the announcement of PSVR2 game Firewall: Ultra, Tencent's growing acquisition of Ubisoft, the mostly-missed confirmation that Returnal is indeed coming to PC, the reveal of Cyberpunk 2077's DLC, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Can Sony gleam anything from Microsoft's mismanagement of Halo and 343? With Spider-Man 2 rumors percolating, what are we most looking forward to in the sequel? Have we reached a point of irreversible open-world fatigue? Did someone really try to make the case that 'Chicago-style' pizza is the 'real' pizza? Learn more about your ad choices. Darren Jachts is the executive producer of Charlie Loves Our Band the story of From Good Homes. This film would not have been possible without Darren's support and unending enthusiasm. Darren lived across the street from Brady and Scott Rymer way back in the 1970's, in Sparta, New Jersey. He has a long-lasting relationship with the Rymers and Todd Sheaffer. Darren has had a very successful 40-year career in the industrial packaging and chemical distribution business, which still occupies a good portion of his time. As well as owning an offshore sport fishing charter company which has been a passion of his, along with music and a little bit of golf for many years. You can often find Darren on the golf course with Todd, which certainly helped get our film project started, and tweaked along the way. I bumped into Darren on Nov. 21st, 2013, at the From Good Homes concert at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, NJ. During our brief backstage chat we found that we both had a connection to Vermont where I live in Montpelier, and Darren had a second home in Stowe. We connected here in Vermont and started a series of late-night visits reminiscing about the days in Sparta and sometime around 2018 the idea for a film started to get steam. We are both thrilled to be sharing the film, Charlie Loves Our Band with the world. There's a story behind this week's show. The Blues Society of Omaha asked me and Glenn, who fills in from time to time, to go on the main stage of our annual, In the Market for the Blues, and discuss the history of the blues. So we did. Sorta. The blues is a pretty big topic - especially to pack into 45 minutes. Instead, I put together A History of the Blues (rather than The History...). I decided to discuss some of the events that made the blues the artform it is today including The Great Migrations of Blacks from the American South to the north and west, some of the sources for blues music including field recordings, Chess Records, and John Hammond. I also told some stories like how John Lomax's efforts to get a recording label for Leadbelly tied together with the sit-com Friends, or how John Hammond's search for Robert Johnson created, in large part, the sound that was Classic Rock, or how a Memphis kid's love of a jug band player lead, indirectly, to several hit recording acts in the 60s and 70s. Or how Reg Dwight played the blues and became Elton John. We are ecclectricity and, ideally, listeners find that entertaining and informative. At the very least, but perhaps the most important, the show is not predictable or driven by cliches of what the blues is or isn't.Thanks for giving this a listen. It was an act of love putting this together.I hope you enjoy the effort.Pacific Street BluesAugust 7, 2022Link to Visuals23. One of America's greatest train song was first recorded by a cowboy band, a bunch of real Oklahoma wranglers who were not only good musicians, but also, as one of their earliest backers said, could “ride or rope anything that has horns, hide or hair.”On May 11, 1926, members of Otto Gray's Cowboy Band traveled from Ripley, Oklahoma, to St. Louis to wax two sides for Okeh. Their first number was issued as “Pistol Pete's Midnight Special,” named for their lead singer, guitarist Dave “Pistol Pete” Cutrell. The group, which toured tirelessly until its breakup in 1936 — often traveling in Cadillac sedans made look like railroad locomotives, complete with cow catchers — became America's first nationally famous cowboy band. A success on the theater circuits of the era, they were touted for their showmanship with whip and rope tricks, their music and varied repertoire, their flashy costumes and their visual humor.About the SongThat first song from their Okeh session became even more famous. “Midnight Special” is a traditional folk song thought to have originated among prisoners in the South. The lyrics first appeared in print in 1905 in an article published by African American scholar Howard Odum. Two decades later, in 1927, Carl Sandburg offered two different versions in his classic folk music collection, The American Songbag. That represented the first published versions of the song's music and words. Also in 1927, Louisiana-born blues artist Cryin' Sam Collins recorded the song for Gennett Records. Incidentally, his was the first version to refer to the train's “ever-lovin' light.” After Collins, the world would have to wait a few more years for Huddie Ledbetter (“Lead Belly”) to fully establish the song's prison cred. In 1934, he recorded a version of “Midnight Special” at Louisiana's Angola Prison for John and Alan Lomax, who then mistakenly reported Lead Belly as the song's author. The Lomaxes, in their book, Best Loved American Folk Songs, told a credible story identifying the Midnight Special as a train from Houston shining its light into a cell in the Sugar Land Prison. They said Ledbetter's version was a ballad “to match ‘Hard Times Poor Boy.' Like so many American folk songs,” they added, “its hero is not a man, but a train." About That Light…There always has been a bit of controversy over what it means for that "ever-lovin' light" to shine on you. Some folks says it is about some kind of salvation, that the light of the train that could take you away from those prison walls. In this context, it is reminiscent of the imagery of such gospel songs as “Let the Light from Your Lighthouse Shine on Me.” On the other hand, Sandburg had a darker view. The poet believed the light meant that the subject of the song would rather be run over by a train than spend even one more night in jail!Either way, as Bob Dylan once said in another context, "imagine it would be some kind of change."Our Take on the TuneNineteen years ago, when we went into the studio to record our third album with the late George Walker engineering, “Midnight Special” was the first number we laid down. After that, though, for some reason the tune just sort of drifted out of our collective consciousness. Until lately. Our old buddy, Floodster Emeritus Paul Martin has been dropping into the jam sessions recently, and that's got us revisiting some of the folkier corners of our repertoire. Here's a moment from a week or so ago. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit 1937flood.substack.com

So my new favorite hobby is crying.I'm mostly joking, but in this episode I discuss how I came to the realization that I've spent most of my life trying to avoid feeling feelings for more than a few reasons, and I overshare all of them.Apparently ignoring feelings doesn't make them go away, and they can actually be a gift. I'm still in mild disbelief, but I'm embracing that you got to feel to heal.In this episode I discuss my personal experience with feelings and avoiding them, the purpose of feelings, and how we can use them as a guidance system.I also share strategies that I'm currently using to practice feeling feelings.Cryin' in Tub playlist https://view.flodesk.com/pages/6241cd5678ed98531daef0b9Want some additional journal prompts so you can reflect on the lessons from this episode? Grammy award honoree, Songwriters Hall of Fame member, and BBC Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Don McLean is set to embark on his 2022 American Pie 50th Anniversary Tour with 20 additional cities throughout the United States and Canada. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic songs and album ever this year, McLean will entertain fans across the continent throughout nearly 30 cities from Honolulu to Toronto and everything in between, proving that "bye-bye, Miss American Pie" will forever remain a classic staple in American music. "After spending the past 18 months at home, I am thrilled to be getting back on the road with my band," says Don McLean. "2022 marks the 50th anniversary from when American Pie landed at the #1 spot on the Billboard? chart and we will be celebrating on tour all year long. We will be performing all the songs from the American Pie album plus many of the other hits that fans will be expecting to hear." As tragic as the backstory behind the song American Pie is with the much too early death of the new rock'n'roll-hope Buddy Holly, the track is also magnificent and legendary. And American Pie still goes to heart as soon as originator Don McLean plays this classic at his concerts. Still, it's worth remembering that the 76-year-old composer has written and sung numerous other melodic and harmonic successes in his decades-long career with Vincent (Starry Starry Night), Castles in the Air, And I Love You So and Cryin', all of which will be heard and reveled in along with newer pieces on the upcoming tour. The eight-and-a-half-minute ballad American Pie has been making history since its release in 1971. Alongside songs by other icons such as Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Woody Guthrie, and Aretha Franklin, McLean's composition was also voted "Song of the 20th Century". Handwritten lyrics to the song were auctioned off for more than $1.2 million in 2015, and the composition was added to the Library Of Congress National Recording Registry two years later. Here, you'll only find a few selected evergreens, such as Somewhere Over The Rainbow. So much for the cultural significance of Don McLean and his 1971 stroke of genius! Over the years, the song has been covered again and again by music icons like Madonna and Garth Brooks. Rapper Drake repeatedly sampled McLean tunes and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur also cited him as an important influence.

Joe chats with Emmy-nominated actor, seasoned director, Grammy Award winning spoken word artist and producer of TV and film, Malcolm-Jamal Warner. They explore what consistency can do for our happiness as well as taking the long view on our artistic journey towards cultivating and sustaining longevity in our career. Together they talk about the evolution of artistry, how it expresses through us and the influences we meet along the way both outside us and within us. Ultimately they speak about what it takes to have healthy self identity, the meditative power of hobbies and the power embedded within our names. Who is Malcolm-Jamal? Malcolm-Jamal Warner has become known in the entertainment business for his seasoned acting talents and his accomplishments in music, directing, and producing. As an Emmy-nominated actor and Grammy award winning poet, Warner has positioned himself as one of the most accomplished talents in the industry today. As a staple in television and film for nearly 30 years, Warner first rose to national prominence by starring on the celebrated and long-running classic television series “The Cosby Show.” His work on the show garnered him a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and set the stage for him to have a long career in the public eye. Warner was most recently seen on ABC's “Ten Days in the Valley” opposite Kyra Sedgwick, and in the critically acclaimed, award-winning FX series “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.” In 2011 Warner produced, directed, and starred in the BET original series “Reed Between the Lines” opposite Golden Globe Award winner Tracee Ellis Ross. In 2017, Warner released a powerful, spoken word short film entitled “You Can't Hear Me”, which highlights some of America's civil and social ills including systematic oppression, deportation and mass incarceration. Since 2018 Warner has starred in FOX's hit medical drama “The Resident.” On stage Warner has starred in the off-Broadway plays “Three Ways Home,” “Cryin' Shame,” (NAACP Theater Award for Best Supporting Actor), “Freefall” at the Victory Garden Theatre, and “A Midsummer Nights' Dream,” at the La Jolla Playhouse. As a seasoned director Warner has worked on a host of television series, including being a regular director [and producer] on the comedy series “Malcolm & Eddie,” and directed several episodes of “The Cosby Show,” “All That,” “Keenan & Kel,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Sesame Street,” and the AIDS awareness video “Timeout: The Truth about HIV, AIDS, and YOU,” which earned Warner the NAACP Key of Life Image Award. When not acting and directing, Warner is a poet and a bass player. In 2015 Warner nabbed his first Grammy Award for “Best Traditional R&B Performance as a Featured Performer” on Robert Glasper's version of the Stevie Wonder classic "Jesus Children of America." Warner's jazz-funk band Miles Long has performed in several major jazz festivals, including the Playboy Jazz Festival, and has opened for high profile artists including Earl Klugh and the late Luther Vandross. In 2015 Warner released his latest album, “Selfless,” which melds spoken word and soul music into once cohesive album. All of Warner's independently distributed CD's, “The Miles Long Mix Tape,” “Love and Other Social Issues,” and “Selfless” have become popular on the underground music scene, can now be purchased on iTunes and http://www.MalcolmJamalWarner.com.
