With a career spanning over four decades, Steve Earle has proven himself a master storyteller and one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters of his generation. In 1986, his record Guitar Town, was released to wide-spread critical acclaim, shooting to number one on the country charts, and is today, regarded as a classic of the Americana genre. While he first won an audience as a country artist, it didn't take long for him to demonstrate that designation was too narrow for him. His rough neck poetics, outspoken and unapologetic lyrical stance, and literate yet down to earth musings, have captivated audiences across genres, with his music running the gamut from country, bluegrass, and folk to the blues, roots, and rock. With 22 studio albums under his belt, he has found room for both personal and the political, often writing about the stuff of everyday life and the forces that shape and define our existence. Some of his most notable releases including his commercial breakthrough Copperhead Road (1988), and Grammy Award winning records The Revolution Starts...Now (2004), Washington Square Serenade (2007), and TOWNES (2009). The versatility in his discography, the strength of his work, and consistent critical acclaim has helped Earle attract a loyal following, who are more than happy to continue following his stylistic evolution. Cut from the same cloth as legendary folk singer-songwriters like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell, Zandi Holup's raw brand of original folk country flourishes through raw unfiltered storytelling reminiscent of Dolly Parton and emphasized by her emotive vocals. Her edgy, deeply emotional lyrics and unique voice set her apart. She sings about the good, the bad, and the ugly. Her music is a voice for the unheard. A Grassroots following placed her on the map as snippets of demos and unreleased songs resonated across social media in increasing numbers. Her first release, “Wait for You,” sat at No. 1 on the all-genre Spotify Fresh Finds playlist, amassing over a million streams with no promotion outside of her TikTok following. Named a 2023 Artist to Watch by The Nashville Briefing, Holup signed a publishing deal with Arthouse Entertainment and TurnTable Music in partnership with Universal Music Publishing, and a record deal with Big Loud Records in 2023.         EPISODE CREDITSMichael Perry - Host Phillip Anich - Announcer Keenan McIntyre - Engineer Gina Nagro - Marketing Support FOLLOW BIG TOP CHAUTAUQUA https://www.facebook.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.instagram.com/bigtopchautauqua/ https://www.tiktok.com/@bigtopchautauqua https://twitter.com/BigBlueTent FOLLOW HOST MICHAEL PERRYhttps://sneezingcow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sneezingcow https://www.instagram.com/sneezingcow/ https://twitter.com/sneezingcow/ 2024 TENT SHOW RADIO SPONSORSAshland Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.visitashland.com/  Bayfield Chamber and Visitor Bureau - https://www.bayfield.org/  Bayfield County Tourism - https://www.bayfieldcounty.wi.gov/150/Tourism  The Bayfield Inn - https://bayfieldinn.com/  Cable Area Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cable4fun.com/  SPECIAL THANKSWisconsin Public Radio - https://www.wpr.org/

This week I'm welcoming Author Brad Smith to Fika with Vicky. We'll be looking into two of his crime fiction novels Copperhead Road and The Goliath Run. Copperhead Road was a Dashiell Hammett Prize Finalist.  Fast paced and gritty, these are two very different works. And yet, there's something that binds them together. Please join us as we explore that connection and more.  About Copperhead Road:  Summer 1936, Wilkes County, North Carolina during the great depression. The Flagg family resides in the middle of the Appalachia – one of the hardest hit areas in the country. As the depression drags on the Flag family watch their molasses business decimated. Jedediah, the family patriarch and his sons Morgan andEzra struggle to produce a few meager gallons a week. That is until their sister Ava arrives home and takes control of the family business and starts running moonshine. Ava bails out ex-con Bobby Barlow and tells him he is working for the Flagg family now. With threats mounting from rival clans and the local cops breathing down Bobby's neck, he and Ava devise a plan to play them all, one against the other. They don't necessarily do it by legal means but that doesn't bother them. To live outside the law, you must be honest. About The Goliath Run: When a deranged loner kills twenty-six people in a Pennsylvania schoolyard, the country is stunned and devastated. Among those catatonic with grief is Jo Matheson, an organic farmer who has lost her goddaughter in the shooting. Sam Jackson, an egotistical right-wing TV talking head, has sliding ratings and faces imminent cancellation. He arrives in Pennsylvania and during a rant, he blames the parents of the dead children. He intends the tirade to be his last salvo but, incredibly, his ratings climb, while Jo watches from her farmhouse in upstate New York, incensed. Sam rides the wave, shouting that it's time to take the country back from the left-wing weaklings who don't have the courage to protect their children. When he is asked to run for Congress, he accepts and amplifies his message. Watching these developments in horror, Jo finally decides that there actually is something she can do. She kidnaps Sam's ten-year-old daughter. About Brad:  Internationally acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Brad Smith is the author of 14 novels to date, including THE RETURN OF KID COOPER, winner of the 2019 SPUR AWARD from the Western Writers of America, ONE-EYED JACKS and COPPERHEAD ROAD, both short-listed for the Dashiell Hammett Award, and ALL HAT, adapted to a feature film which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, starring Luke Kirby, Rachael Leigh Cooke and Keith Carradine. Smith also wrote and directed the Bravo short, FADING FAST. Smith's writing draws on his wellspring of experiences working across Canada, the U.S. and Africa, at a variety of jobs, including railway signalman, truck driver, bartender, ditch digger, school teacher, farmer, maintenance electrician and roofer. He restores vintage cars and currently owns a 1968 Mustang and a 1937 Ford coupe. He is a baseball fanatic and plays golf regularly with varying degrees of success. “If Steve Earle weren't a living, breathing person, he'd be a character in a blues song,” observed a reviewer. Earle is foremost a musician, one who started out in Nashville as a songwriter. Along the way, this self-proclaimed “hardcore troubadour,” has been married seven times, conquered drug addiction, did a stint in jail, and lost nearly everything as he fed that addiction. But in the end, the power of music won through. Today, Earle is known for his accomplished musicianship, his way with lyrics, and his outspoken politics. He's won buckets of awards, including three Grammys, recorded 22 albums, and his song, “Copperhead Road,” has become the official state song of Tennessee. Earle is in town for the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival which he will be headlining. We'll talk to Earle about his songwriting, his music, and hear him sing some tunes. Guests: Steve Earle, singer, songwriter. Earle has received three Grammy awards for his folk albums. He will be appearing that Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco. Mick Hellman, drummer for the Go to Hell Man Band, the Wreckless Strangers and Marco & the Polos; founder and managing partner, HMI Capital. Hellman's father, Warren Hellman, founded the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival.

Earl didn't release his debut album Guitar Town until he was 27 years old, but he'd already established himself as a noted songwriter in Nashville. By the end of 2022, Steve Earle had released 21 studio albums, many with his long standing band The Dukes. He's also a published author, has appeared in the TV series The Wire, has produced an album by Joan Baez, and also been involved in several stage plays. Steve will be appearing at Blues Fest in Melbourne along with Lucinda Williams over the Easter weekend, and also at Blues Fest in Byron Bay, plus the Enmore Theatre on April 3. Show Notes Episode 384: The Devil and Caleb Black Part 5 of Spooktacular 20222 This week Host Dave Bledsoe actually did some damn work and wrote original audio fiction for the finale of the Spooktacular. (It was because he was afraid the Satanists were gonna cast a hex on his Jameson bottle!) On the show this week tell you the story of a bad man and his deal with the Devil. (Not Dave, and the devil isn't real) Along the way we meet Dave's Papaw, who is the guy on the right in the show pic. He tells him a tale of an Appalachian bootlegger and his encounter with an old man in the mountains who makes him an offer he can't refuse.  The Devil and Caleb Black is an original audio drama written, performed and sound designed by Dave Bledsoe. (Is it a thinly veiled rip off of Old Gods of Appalachian? Yes, it really is!) It concludes Spooktacular 2022, with one last story about the Devil. Hopefully the Church of Satan will not get their black silk crotchless panties in a twist over this one since we admit right here at the start, that we made the whole thing up. (So lighted up! I recorded a whole record while Circle 9 recorded EUTAW STREET because I was so frustrated. Eventually I talked them into doing operas. Tell you what. We passed over this song for EUTAW STREET and it pissed me off. So, being as I'm a Steve Earle acolyte, I figured it out on mandolin and did my own version of his masterpiece COPPERHEAD ROAD. First half macro second half micro. I named the album SOCIETY FRINGE PLAYER. Nowadays this is in the live version of TRAVELOGUE AMERICA PART TWO. It opens it up after intermission which for me means Twizzlers and Coke from the concession stand. These are some of the finest lyrics I've ever written.

We are excited to bring you Lauren Murphy of The Psychedelics and Deb Grabein of The Sound Field this week on No Simple Road! Lauren Murphy shares more than a little with The Sound Field, not the least of which are the musicians David Salvia and Mark Karan. The latter, who co-produced Psychedelics with Murphy herself at Dauphin Street Sound in Mobile, AL., also accompanies members of the band named after this record. Such continuity of activity further delineates common roots in the Sixties also extending to a package layout by Bob Minkin Design (he of so many superb photos of the Grateful Dead even apart from his book Photographed By (Insight Editions , 2014) as well as two songs here co-authored by the late wordsmith Robert Hunter for that latter band. Thanks in part to the augmentation of its core trio, The Sound field's second album, This Moment of the Storm, is an incrementally ghostly listening experience over the course of its dozen tracks and near sixty-minutes duration. The esteemed David Lindley, long-time accompanist to Jackson Browne, adds color with lap steel on "Cry For Memory" and "Walk" plus bouzouki on "Copperhead Road," while Mark Karan, best known for his long-term work with former members of the Grateful Dead, chips in with suitably intricate guitar work. This is a heavy conversation! Episode 21 of Season 4 kicked off on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 27 May 2021.  We started with Yngwie Malmsteen and Jeff Scott Soto's wonderful cover of 'Magical Mystery Tour' off Butchering the Beatles.  It's probably one of the best ways you can possibly start a radio show.  From there it was Five Finger Death Punch, and then a detour down 'Copperhead Road' with Steve Earle and some Dire Straits before we unwittingly ended up in a sort of Aliens theme for a few songs courtesy of Journey, Blink 182, and The Misfits.  The back-to-back Iron Maiden and Judas Priest with 'Blood Red Skies' bought us back to earth. The Doors with 'Riders on the Storm' really went down well, it's such an incredible song, or as one listener put it "for my soul".  SA bands included Mark Haze, Wonderboom, Arapaho, The Color Blew, and near the end, what I consider to be the best metal band in the country, Sunken State with a new track called ' Separation Has Begun'.  Mark my words this band is going to be huge as far as metal bands can be huge in today's world.  Highlights for me were listening to The Mayfield Four with 'Summergirl' and around 4 min in where Myles Kennedy just takes his vocals to a new level, absolutely incredible.  Whitesnake with 'Still of the Night' sounded amazing and Arch Enemy with Alissa White-Gluz on vocals and Michael Amott on guitar rounded out the highlights with 'You Will Know My Name' off War Eternal.   Artists featured:  Yngwie Malmsteen, Dangerous Toys, UFO, Slash, Five Finger Death Punch, Steve Earle, Dire Straits, Anthrax, Journey, Blink 182, Ramones, The Misfits, Whitesnake, Skid Row, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rammstein, Metallica, Shinedown, Mark Haze, Wonderboom, Arapaho, The Doors, LA Rats, Arch Enemy, Megadeth, W.A.S.P., Thin Lizzy, Sinner, The Mayfield Four, The Pretty Reckless, Temple of the Dog, Biters, Van Halen, Sunken State, Venom, The Color Blew

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com This article is written by Richard Kane, “Big Daddy Kane” or “BDK”, as many of you know him as. Since the very first motorcycle was built, motorcycles have enacted a passion in people. Whether it is the thrill of the ride, the sense of adventure or just the feeling of getting away from the norm from time to time people have enjoyed the two-wheeled wonder. Equally, music does the same for people and I believe music and motorcycles go hand in hand as they say. Please note, these are not my top ten favorite songs to listen to while riding. This is a list I put together based on several factors. The factors include impact, age, and genre. Music, even since the early days of motorcycling has been a part of the culture in my opinion. Concerts at rallies, listening to music while riding, or just stopping by a small bar with a local band playing cover tunes while out on a day ride are common. From the British mod subculture, to American war veterans, to the chopper culture of the 60’s and 70’s, then the 80’s comeback of H-D with a huge tie to southern rock music has always been an influence. My list below is not in any particular order and you may, or may not agree. In our Private Patron Member Only Facebook Group, we often discuss different music topics. Again, showing a very close relation to music and motorcycles. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE To acquire this list I have done many hours of research. As a music fan that has over 150 vinyl records, 200 CD’s and thousands of digital downloads I was careful to focus the list on the impact the band, and song has had on motorcycle culture. Some songs are obviously for the older generations, but others will no doubt influence the younger riders. For example in Sturgis this year I witnessed two “clubbers” of different generations ride past me. One, an older man wearing common biker wear such as jeans, boots, and a vest. Blaring from his Ultra was classic southern rock as he pulled into the clubhouse off of Main St. Soon after him came a younger member wearing long shorts and high tops. Booming from his stereo was modern rap/hip hop. It’s obvious music tastes have changed among riders. #1-Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf- This is an easy one and if not included in this list I believe the validity of the list in general is compromised. “Get your motor running” is the first thing that comes to mind with this song. I personally saw Steppenwolf at a rally in 1996 and the men and women in the crowd went nuts. The song is a common anthem and while Steppenwolf as a band is not one of my favorites the impact of the song makes it a must have on this list. #2-Sympathy For the Devil by The Rolling Stones– This classic from the American blues inspired band is a classic. This band has spanned from the 60’s where the mods favored rockabilly, early rock and roll, motorcycles and leather jackets to today. The Rolling Stones inspired many British and American kids alike. The song tells a tale of history from the Russian Czar to an American President. A favorite of many motorcycle riders the song is one that allows you to lean back and just cruise. #3-Rambling Man by the Allman Brothers Band– Can you really have a list such as this without these southern rock icons. Greg Allman, often considered one of the top guitarists of all time, passed away too soon. This classic just soothes getting out on the open road to enjoy the adventure waiting ahead. It brings to mind getting on the bike with minimal plans or expectations and letting the day, and ride be in charge. Like many bikers we do not like to stay in one place on our rides. Ramble on riders! #4-Free Bird by Lynard Skynard– Try going to any motorcycle rally without hearing this song! Lynard Skynyrd has become an icon of rallies and I can tell you after seeing them live in Sturgis in 1999 I became a bigger fan. The song inspires you to be free, ride and enjoy the moment. Riders of several age groups can’t help to sing along whether it's at a concert, in a bar, or even on their bike. Considered by many the quintessential motorcycle song. #5-Highway Song by Blackfoot– This song just conjures up the thoughts of being on the road, probably alone, and letting the highway lead you to your destination even though you may not know where you’re going. The song is long, yes. But, imagine you and hundreds of riders singing along at the same time while you have your arm around your gal. An ode to the highway and the adventures it brings. #6-Wherever I May Roam by Metallica– This classic by Metallica is an ode to touring the road as a band, but is easily applicable to motorcycle riders. For those in their 40’s we remember Metallica very well and the lyrics speak to them. Just like Highway Song for those in their 50’s and 60’s this song is easily their equivalent anthem. When the guitars of Kirk Hammet hit you in the gut you just have to play air guitar as the cruise control takes over the throttle. #7-Girls, Girls, Girls by Motley Crue– This is definitely one of my favorites for this list. Yes, the song is about gentlemen’s clubs, but anyone who has seen the video knows it is definitely a motorcycle song. The four bad boys of rock and roll cruising the Sunset Strip riding their Harley-Davidsons is branded in your memory. The add-in sounds of a Harley-Davidson in the song itself is a clue. This song comes on and you twist the acceleration of the throttle whether you want to or not. Motorcycles, beautiful women and cool rockers! #8-Copperhead Road by Steve Earle- A motorcycle favorite. Earle’s ode to his fictitious father being a moonshine runner, his going to Vietnam and coming back and being a runner of a different type is a classic. I have met Earleseveral times. He is a kind man who is insanely creative. After prison, his sound changed to more of a folk one, but his passion for music never faded. I never asked Earle if he rides, and even if he doesn’t it would not matter. Motorcyclists of all generations love this song. #9-LaGrange by ZZ Top– ZZ Top is notorious for their classic car passion. But that passion definitely carries over to motorcycling as well. This song is such a classic it has been included in many motorcycle inspired compilations. Many artists including one of my favorites, Jamey Johnson have covered this song. It’s not necessarily about cars, or motorcycles, but bikers sure love it. #10-My Generation by The Who– Maybe a controversial pick, but the kings of British Mod Culture had to be on the list. I would have loved to have been in Britain during this time. Getting dressed, riding to get your date for the night who for sure was wearing a mini-dress and high boots with enough hairspray to keep her hair from ever getting messed up in the wind. The Who and this song had a lot of influence on the mod riders of the time. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Honorable Mentions:  Some songs below could have made the top ten. Here are some of those; Sister Christian by Night Ranger– A biker favorite for sure. The tune goes from a slower pace to a slight and then sudden increase as the drums kick. It just makes you want to let go of the handlebars for a moment and play air drums. An ode to the drummer's sister who was graduating high school has not only become a huge classic, but a biker favorite. Bawitdaba by Kid Rock-Those in their 40’s remember this tune well. The combination of R&B, Rock, Metal and Rap all while motocross riders are jumping their bikes over the stage filled with cool rockers and hot women. All while wishing you could be Kid Rock for just one night. When this song comes on while you're riding you can't help but bob your head up and down to the beat. Running With the Devil by Van Halen– Ok, seriously who doesn’t have this song in their playlist? This tune will inadvertently make you twist the throttle and increase your chance of a ticket in ten-seconds flat. A favorite of young and old bikers alike. This Life by Curtis Stinger-The theme song of Sons of Anarchy is notorious. It is a great song. In fact all four soundtracks are really good. I love Perry Ferrel’s version of Sympathy of The Devil on one of them. At the time this show was huge. Some people may look back now and mock it a bit, but in reality it had pretty good writing, stars that played the part’s well and there is no doubt it inspired younger riders to get a motorcycle and ride. The T-bar’d Dyna with the fairing was basically built from this show and really influenced companies and custom makers for years. Hicktown by Jason Aldean– Ok, I admit this is one of my inputs. Lots of country music loving riders out there. This song just hits you in the gut with its rock inspired country undertones. When this song comes on when I am riding I cannot help but think of being on a bike riding out to the Saturday night bonfire to see my friends and hopefully meet a lovely lady who wants a ride. Train, Train by Black Oak Arkansas-This is my last input to this article. A southern rock classic that is common on many southern rock and motorcycle inspired compilations. Bikers love this song and it has a great rhythm to it. Yes, easily a .38 Special song or even If You Want to Go To Heaven by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils could easily be here in it’s place. But, we have to end the list at some time. Well that is it. You may agree on most, all, or none of these pics. Again the goal was to pick songs that influence riders of all genres, age groups and styles. I look forward to your input. Most importantly ride safe and often. The sixteen-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner joins us to talk about his remarkably varied body of songwriting from country to to rock to political songs to Americana and contemporary folk. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE  Scott and Paul tell you how you can hear their wild story about getting ready for the Steve Earle interview, and they explain why this episode is particularly special. PART TWO - 7:12 mark Paul and Scott head over to Steve's Los Angeles hotel to get the details on how a Chicago radio station saved his career; why reading is more important than listening to records; the book Townes Van Zandt loaned him that transformed his view of writing; the concert that inspired Steve to write "Guitar Town;" what he really thinks of the "Copperhead Road" line-dancing phenomenon; the first song he wrote after a long period of drug addiction and homelessness; why bluegrass is like bebop; who he says is THE badass country singer/songwriter in Nashville today; why he's working on a new political album that isn't just about preaching to the choir; and which song he would play for Guy Clark today to try to impress him.    ABOUT STEVE EARLE Singer, songwriter, musician, author, actor, record producer, and progressive political activist Steve Earle rose to prominence in the 1980s with his album Guitar Town, which topped the Billboard country album chart, earned two Grammy nominations, picked up a Top New Male Artist nomination from the Academy of Country Music, and is included among Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of all Time. Raised in Texas, Earle launched his career in Nashville playing bass in legendary songwriter Guy Clark’s backing band. Following a stint recording with a rockabilly-influenced sound for Epic Records, Earle switched to MCA where he broke through with now-classic songs such as “Guitar Town,” “Someday,” “Goodbye’s All We’ve Got Left,” “My Old Friend the Blues,” “Fearless Heart,” “Nowhere Road,” “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied,” “The Devil’s Right Hand,” “The Other Kind,” and “Copperhead Road,” which reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.    Drug addiction, homelessness, and a period of incarceration derailed Earle’s career for several years before he reemerged in the mid-1990s as standard-bearer for contemporary folk and Americana music. His eclectic comeback albums Train a Comin’, I Feel Alright and El Corazon garnered near-universal critical praise. The new millennium found Steve continuing to earn attention for his songs, including “Galway Girl,” “John Walker’s Blues,” “Jerusalem,” “The Revolution Starts Now,” and “City of Immigrants.” Always difficult to categorize, Steve has recorded the highly-acclaimed bluegrass album The Mountain with The Del McCoury Band, a traditional blues album called Terraplane, and a duet album with Shawn Colvin. In total, Earle has released nineteen studio albums and has earned sixteen Grammy nominations, including three wins in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. Steve’s songs have been covered by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Joan Baez, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Wanda Jackson, Bob Seger, Levon Helm, and many others. His son, Justin Townes Earle, is a respected singer-songwriter in his own right.
