Paul Barry joins me again on episode 105, for another look at the life and career of the great William Clarke.Paul has now released his biography: Blowin' Like Hell: The William Clarke Story, writing it from insights he gained from Bill's wife Jeanette, and Bill's children, and the musicians who played with him, as well as many others.Bill dedicated his life from the age of sixteen to become the bluesman he dreamed he could be, and he worked extremely hard at it. He honed his craft from woodshedding at home, attending the blues clubs of LA, becoming the protege of George Smith, and pushing himself hard to create his unique voice both vocally and especially on the diatonic and chromatic harmonica. All this despite his personal demons, to become one of the leading players of his generation. Paul Barry joins me on episode 64. Paul is our resident expert on William Clarke, and is currently writing a biography about him.Bill (as he was known to his friends) was born in a suburb of Los Angeles, and starting going to the blues clubs in the south of the city, age 17. Bill met his great inspiration, George ‘Harmonica' Smith, in 1977, with George showing Bill how to play that big old chromatic harmonica . Bill released his first album in 1978, with other albums following where he always featured original material. He then signed for Alligator records in 1990, releasing his superb album: Blowin' Like Hell. The four albums he released with Alligator gave Bill the chance to fully shape the sound he had been developing, influenced by jazz players and including a horn section. Sadly Bill passed away at age 45, but he has still left us with an essential body of work for both diatonic and chromatic blues harmonica.Links:Paul Barry's band website:https://www.paulbarryblues.com/LA newspaper interview with Bill 1991:https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1991-05-16-vl-2586-story.htmlTom Ellis: William Clarke Memorial article in Blues Access magazine:http://www.bluesaccess.com/No_28/Clarke.htmlBob Corritore: William Clarke Remembered photo gallery:https://bobcorritore.com/photos/william-clarke-remembered/Interview with his wife: Jeanette Clarke-Lodovicihttps://www.allaboutjazz.com/william-clarke-now-that-you-are-gone-william-clarke-by-david-kingHarpTranscripts: for transcription of Blowin' The Family Jewels: (under 'G harmonica')http://www.harptranscripts.co.uk/diatonic.htmlVideos:Hitting Heavy album:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsgucIjixtIWilliam Clarke playing Lollipop Mama:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrXrsmUWAGMWilliam Clarke playing Pawnshop Bound:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8IJBQ5u1ZsWilliam Clarke playing on Bro Matt's Bluez Shift:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YIv2Bb9f6oPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsor:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com  or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS

On April 25, 2017, the Supreme Court decided Lewis v. Clarke. Petitioners Brian and Michelle Lewis were driving on a Connecticut interstate when they were struck from behind by a vehicle driven by respondent William Clarke, a Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority employee, who was transporting Mohegan Sun Casino patrons. The Lewises sued Clarke in his individual capacity in state court. Clarke moved to dismiss for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction, arguing that because he was an employee of the Gaming Authority—an arm of the Mohegan Tribe entitled to sovereign immunity—and was acting within the scope of his employment at the time of the accident, he was similarly entitled to sovereign immunity against suit. He also argued, in the alternative, that he should prevail because the Gaming Authority was bound by tribal law to indemnify him. The trial court denied Clarke’s motion, but the Supreme Court of Connecticut reversed, holding that tribal sovereign immunity barred the suit because Clarke was acting within the scope of his employment when the accident occurred. It did not consider whether Clarke should be entitled to sovereign immunity based on the indemnification statute. -- By a vote of 8-0, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the judgment of the Supreme Court of Connecticut and remanded the case. In an opinion by Justice Sotomayor, the Court held that (1) in a suit brought against a tribal employee in his individual capacity, the employee, not the tribe, is the real party in interest and the tribe's sovereign immunity is not implicated; and (2) an indemnification provision cannot, as a matter of law, extend sovereign immunity to individual employees who would otherwise not be protected. Justice Sotomayor’s majority opinion was joined by the Chief Justice and Justices Kennedy, Breyer, Alito, and Kagan. Justices Thomas and Ginsburg filed opinions concurring in the judgment. Justice Gorsuch took no part in the consideration or decision of the case. -- To discuss the case, we have Zachary Price, who is Associate Professor at University of California Hastings College of Law.

William Clarke, Partner in the Conveyancing Section of Clarke Jeffers Solicitors is joined by Ronan Lyons, Lecturer in Trinity College Dublin and most well-known for his role as chief economist with Irelands largest property site www.daft.ie, together with David Ashmore, Partner in the Fine Home and Country Estates Section of Sherry Fitzgerald Auctioneers. We are looking at numerous issues pertaining to the buying and selling of property in Ireland today. Is it a good time to buy? Is there finance available? What about the rental market? Should I build? One of the most important questions we ask is: why do Irish people have such an interest in owning property. It is an open discussion which we hope will shed some light on the current property market.

Barbeque Bob is a seasoned veteran harmonica virtuoso and vocalist from the Boston, MA with nearly 30 years of experience in the business and has worked and toured wth many different blues legends, including Jimmy Rogers, Louisiana Red, Sunnyland Slim, and Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson. After nearly three years of being forced to take things very slow due to being on kidney dialysis, Bob recieved a kidney transplant on May 1, 2003, and he is now back on the scene with a vengeance. It's another week in The Roadhouse Podcast, featuring upcoming music, new music, cuts from artists who've never been in The Roadhouse, and some music from artists we haven't heard from in awhile. The combination of Watermelon Slim, Daddy Mack Blues Band, The Whiskey Imperials, Ian Siegal, and William Clarke make for, possibly, the most chair-danceable edition of The Roadhouse ever. Plus, I've got an annoucement about an addition to your Roadhouse feed starting this week. Crank up the player and raise your heart rate. It's the 57th edition of The Roadhouse Podcast - the finest blues you've never heard.
