And do everything you can to live a quiet life. You should mind your own business. And work with your hands, just as we told you to. Then unbelievers will have respect for your everyday life. And you won't have to depend on anyone (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12). Yesterday's text encouraged the church to grow in the discipline of love. Christian charity always includes practical stuff like providing meals and offering transportation. Paul recognizes that this practice could be taken advantage of—some deciding to live off of the largess of others. Folks among the lower social classes might take up residence on the estate of a wealthy Christian, expecting the well healed to provide for their wellbeing. That is one issue Paul addresses here. There is also another. Since Christians expected Jesus to return real soon, some had decided to abandon the normal pursuits of life, such as paid employment, and were camped on a hillside. With their noses turned up to the sky they spent the day singing Kumbaya and Swing Low Sweet Chariot. They were creating a bit of a disturbance in the neighbourhood, expecting to be supplied with provisions and suggesting other Christians didn't have enough faith. As we might imagine, those who followed other gods, thought these Jesus followers had lost touch with reality. As a result, Christ's name was being discredited. Whether one was camped on the hillside or illegally on some estate, without the normal pursuits of life these folks had too much time on their hands. As a result, they had begun to gossip and contribute their opinions into situations to which they had not been invited. Paul recognizes that if the rule of love is to be effective, the rule of work must also be practiced. Christians must learn to live peaceably, not creating social disturbances. They must mind their own business not always prying into what other people are doing under the guise of ‘family' interest. And they must do their best to find paid employment or something else that will benefit society. Outsiders, looking at a movement that claims Jesus is Lord of the world, will be interested to see what effect this claim has on behaviour. Healthy financial behaviour, like sexual behaviour, is one telling indicator of the fitness and integrity of a community. Of course, within the fellowship, those in need should be provided for. This was why the place of widows, women left without a breadwinner, so quickly became important in the early church (Acts 6.1; 1 Timothy 5.3-16). However, these recipients should make themselves useful in other ways. These are not side issues, away from the real theological heart of the Christian gospel. If God has created a family in Christ, and if that family is based on and characterized by nothing less than self-giving love, these things are vital. Happy the church that discovers what love in practice looks and feels like. Equally blessed in the Christian community that contributes to the wellbeing of the society in which they live. So that our daily living may win the respect of outsiders and that we will not be unnecessarily dependent on anybody (4:12). As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he'll do it! The amazing grace of Jesus Christ be with you! (1 Thessalonians 5:23,24,28 The Message).

Finding Hope in the Promises

I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you (Genesis 28:15). Let's return once more to this word to Jacob -- a part of God's promise to him as he fled his brother's wrath. I've often wondered how African slaves sold on the American auction block kept hope alive. Likewise, how did those who resisted the Nazi's maintain their resolve to hide Jewish folks, even as their own loved ones were carted off to concentration camps? Or how do folks who have suffered abuse for years and years find the resolve to live after finding freedom? I'm sure the answers are varied and complex. We may catch a glimpse in some of the songs left us from African American Christians. The lyrics of “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” harken back to this promise of God to Jacob while in the same beat stretching forward to the new heaven and new earth. Such hope is rooted in God's promise, “I have better things in store for you.” Thus, there is good reason for all of us to ponder these great promises tucked into the pages of the Bible. And looking at the context of this promise offers us enormous hope. Remember that Jacob is running for his life. His brother is angry with him. And the anger is justified. Jacob has connived and tricked his brother out of the family birthright, blessing and inheritance that belonged to the oldest son. But at the heart of this deception is a lack of faith in God. Rebekah, Jacob's mother, had learned, even before her twins were born, that the older would serve the younger. Faith would have waited and watched as God fulfilled his promise. She knew the story of her husband, Isaac, born to the aged Sarah. But she did not watch and wait. Instead, she deceived her husband and older son. Despite this lack of faith in God's ability to bring about what he has promised, God makes a new promise to Jacob: “you are running away, but I will bring you home”. And our Lord does it. This theme of God fulfilling his promise to his doubting people continues throughout the Bible. When the people of Israel reach the promised land, they don't believe that God could bring them in. They are banished to the wilderness, even as God promises to bring their children in. Later, when Israel refuses to worship God, he threatens to remove them from the land. They don't take him seriously; they keep sinning. Even as God sends his people into exile, he promises to bring them back. He will resettle them in the promised land. He had promised Abraham that this land would belong to his children forever. He will keep his promise. What does all this have to do with Christians today? Well, at least two things. First, it points towards Jesus on the cross. Paul is emphatic, that Christ died for us while we were still sinners, enemies, even, of God. When we read about Israel, we read our own stories. We are saved by grace, nothing else. Further, Matthew tells us that even while some of his disciples still doubted, Jesus sent them out to be his witnesses (Matthew 28:16-20). God does not need people who have it altogether. Its flawed and doubting folks that are saved and sent. That's good news for all of us. Secondly, the promise of the land still stands: a renewed earth. We have something to look forward to. We believe that there is life after death. While the details might be sketchy, one thing is clear, the renewed earth will be vastly superior to this one. And God will be with us all the way from here to there. So, whether its our own lack of holiness or faith, or the bleak circumstance of our lives, these promises of God penetrate our despair and offer us hope. These promises deserve celebration. Live with joy today as you consider the hope we have in God. That hope fueled the songs of African slaves in the Americas. It's a hope that belongs to all Christians. It's a hope that we need today. As you journey, go with the blessing of God: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).

Timothy Stuetz (www.timothystuetz.com) spent three days in bed, crying - not eating or drinking in his early 30's.  He had graduated top of his class, got a job at an international CPA firm right out of college, got married, had a child and a house. And it all fell apart. He found himself yelling out to God: If you exist, I need to find you!As a child, he saw angels and chariots when he sang “Swing Low Sweet Chariot”. He shared it with his classmates on the playground but didn't get the reception he expected. He felt it was not safe to share the innermost aspects of his being.  He shut down.  The birth of his daughter, Melanie Dawn started his reawakening. She has been his guru. Golden energy was rising up from her to the ceiling when she was separated from her mother's body. When she was 1½, he had a pain in his back, she walked by him and put her finger right in the most painful spot. The pain disappeared and never came back. Once she was in the back seat of the car and described where they were going. She had never been there except when she was in the womb. It made him contemplate when do we first become aware. His daughter was on a bike and was hit by a car going 40 mph. A police helicopter was flying overhead at the time. The minister of the Huntington Beach Church of Religious Science saw the accident and started a prayer circle immediately. Melanie was healthy but had after-effects. He spent every night in the hospital with her for months. He walked around the block and heard a voice saying "Look Daddy, I'm the little girl coming toward you. I am the trees. I am the sky." He knew he had to expand his consciousness to relate to his daughter. He was divorced. His wife used the accident as a reason for not allowing him to see her again. He heard and felt Christ saying: I will remake you in my image. A friend gave him a book that touched things deep inside him that his daughter had been sharing ever since she was born. He had an out of body experience. He called a psychologist who asked him to chant and meditate with her. She brought him a book by Ram Dass. He had powerful experiences meditating and felt much calmer and peaceful. After a couple of years, he felt really sick. He got reiki treatments that allowed him to see the emotional and mental blockage that was creating his physical problems. He felt more connected with God. He started giving his relatives and students blessings as they left their body which opened his eyes to new dimensions and new ways of looking at life. Writing children's books allows him to see inner child things and expand his creativity. He discovered that children creating images in their head when they are young is the foundation for their entire life. His stories blend fantasy and reality, myth and mystery, child development, values, and exercises that parents and children use for breathing, getting calm, learning to talk to each other lovingly, and using non-violent communication principles. Timothy created a book club. He offers a live monthly reading of the stories. Children get to submit their illustrations of what they imagine happening on the pages. It also includes two live monthly Zooms with parents. He provides a space for parents to get answers to challenges, and be in community where they can get support, and takes them to a peaceful place that they might not get to by themselves. The mystical moment that changed his life was the beautiful light streaming up out of his daughter when she was born. He's had many powerful experiences with Christ. He saw and experienced the total bliss we can live in, and he saw the torture and problems we can live in - if we are not loving and caring and focused on our path and in our heart. Check out Rev. Timeless, authorless songs that are soulful and full of yearning is an apt description of the Negro spirituals that were born of slavery. The Jubilee Singers of Fisk University, named for the biblical year of Jubilee when slaves were liberated as found in Leviticus 25, helped bring these spirituals to America and the world. One of the favorites they brought out is this song, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. Article taken from Then Sings My Soul, Volumes 1 & 2 by Robert J. Morgan. Copyright © 2003 by Robert J. Morgan. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you (Genesis 28:15). As promised, we return to this word of God to Jacob, a promise made to him as he fled from his brother's anger. In my devotion last Tuesday, I wondered how African slaves sold on the American auction block kept hope alive. I'm sure the answer is very complex, but I think we catches glimpses of it in their songs such as Swing Low Sweet Chariot. This is a song about hope and the promised land rooted in biblical promises such as the one we have in our text. God says, I will bring you back to this land. Remember that I pointed out that Jacob is running for his life. His brother is angry with him. And the anger is justified. Jacob has connived and tricked his brother out of the family birthright and blessing that normally went to the oldest son. But at the heart of Jacob's action is a lack of faith in God. Rebekah, Jacob's mother, had learned, even before her twins were born, that the older would serve the younger. But instead of allowing God time to fulfill his promise, they had acted together to trick father Isaac and brother Esau. Yet, God promises to bring Jacob home. And he does it. This theme of God fulfilling his promise in the midst of unbelief continues throughout the Bible. When the people of Israel reach the promised land, they don't believe that God can bring them in. They are banished to the wilderness for a generation, but God brings their children into it. Later, when Israel refuses to worship God, he threatens to remove them from the land. They don't take him seriously; they keep sinning. Even as God sends Israel into Exile, he promises to bring them back. There is joy in that. Secondly, we are promised a land as well: a renewed earth. We have something to look forward to. We believe that there is life after death. While the details might be few, one thing is clear, the renew earth will be way better than this one. And God will be with us all the way from here to there. Those things deserve a party don't they. Put a little celebration into your day today, as you consider the hope we have in God. That hope of a renewed earth fueled the songs of African slaves in the Americas. It's a hope that belongs to all Christians. It's a hope that we need today. Tomorrow is the first day of Lent. In these Wilderness Wanderings, we will use Lent to explore the many dimensions of Christian hope. Hope that we enable us to endure in our wildernesses.

The whole point of grace is its gratuity–its non-necessity. Melissa shared a unique perspective on the story of the transfiguration of Jesus. Transfiguration means to change an outward appearance. When Peter sees this, he can only say, “It is good–beautiful–to be here.” We are being invited into God’s life. Because God is beautiful, things in God’s creation are beautiful. “Magic, shining songs.” Reaching back to the ancestors. How do we survive when the worst happens? Transcendence and code: “Steal Away,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” Music as a secret door. The roots of gospel, jazz, hip-hop, the blues. An exuberant experience of conversation and singing. There are nearly 5,000 spirituals in existence. Their organizing concept is not the melody of Europe, but the rhythm of Africa. They were composed by slaves, bards whose names we will never know, and yet gave rise to gospel, jazz, blues, and hip-hop. Joe Carter lived and breathed the universal appeal and hidden stories, meanings, and hope in what were originally called “sorrow songs.” This was one of our first weekly shows, and it’s still one of our most beloved. Joe Carter was a singer, performer, teacher, and traveling humanitarian. He performed for more than 25 years in opera and musical theater, portrayed Paul Robeson in a one-man musical, and introduced people around the world to the spiritual. He died of leukemia at age 57, on June 26, 2006. Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

Hon har komponerat stycket Elegi for a woman called Laura Nelson. Church, family, school, and life in the country are recurrent themes. In this episode Ms. Chocolate shares about the music she sang as a little girl: “The music I remember as a child were called spirituals. Now you don’t have too much of that today… but I do a monologue of Harriet Tubman and spirituals of the Underground Railroad. So I teach children how slaves used music to communicate…….. ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot,’ ‘He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands,’ ‘This Little Light of Mine’—these are spirituals. Really simple songs that have a really big meaning,” says Ms. Chocolate. Ms. Chocolate lives in Picayune, Mississippi today. She left New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, Wallis Willis, wrote "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" ,in what is now Choctaw County, near the County seat of Hugo, Oklahoma sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to heaven by a chariot (2 Kings 2:11). Many sources claim that this song and "Steal Away" (also composed by Willis) had lyrics that referred to the Underground Railroad, the resistance movement that helped slaves escape from the South to the North and Canada.Alexander Reid, a minister at the Old Spencer Academy, Choctaw boarding school, heard Willis singing these two songs and transcribed the words and melodies. He sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe.TRADITIONAL LYRICSChorus:Swing low, sweet chariotComing for to carry me home,Swing low, sweet chariot,Coming for to carry me home.I looked over Jordan, and what did I seeComing for to carry me home?A band of angels coming after me,Coming for to carry me home.ChorusSometimes I'm up, and sometimes I'm down,(Coming for to carry me home)But still my soul feels heavenly bound.(Coming for to carry me home)ChorusThe brightest day that I can say,(Coming for to carry me home)When Jesus washed my sins away.(Coming for to carry me home)ChorusIf I get there before you do,(Coming for to carry me home)I'll cut a hole and pull you through.(Coming for to carry me home)ChorusIf you get there before I do,(Coming for to carry me home)Tell all my friends I'm coming too.(Coming for to carry me home)Chorus"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is a historic American Negro spiritual. The first recording was in 1909, by the Fisk Jubilee Singers of Fisk University. In 2002, the Library of Congress honored the song as one of 50 recordings chosen that year to be added to the National Recording Registry. It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.© 2012 Shiloh Worship Music COPY FREELY;This Music is copyrighted to prevent misuse, however, permission is granted for non-commercial copying-Radio play permitted- www.shilohworshipmusic.com

February 22, 2009 Chariots of Fire 2 Kings 2:1-12 Sermon Synopsis: Chariots of Fire highlights God’s presence among the saints. The sermon starts and ends with an African-American Negro spiritual first recorded in 1909, Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Like the song, this sermon is inspired by the “chariots of fire” that separated Elijah and Elisha and the whirlwind that took Elijah to heaven. Elisha never lost sight of those chariots of fire. He knew they were always there watching over him. This story provides insights into what was happening on the Mount of Transfiguration when Elijah and Moses came to meet with Jesus. Peter, James and John said Jesus glowed bright with the glory of God. The fire had not lost its power. The chariots had not come to separate Jesus from his disciples not even death could do that. There was no whirlwind that day, but there would be. Jesus didn’t take off that day because he knew we needed him to finish the course laid out for him. Paul talked about the need of others keeping him in the fight. How much more important was it for Jesus to stay. Though others cannot see him, he is with us still. The day is coming when he will once again come in the power and glory of God to take the redeemed to be with him forever. Are you ready to climb on board?
