Pastor John Farley - Lighthouse Bible Church Podcast

John Farley Pastor Teacher Sunday, August 22, 2021 Facing unbelief Joh 6:41-51 Jesus gave these people the most remarkable, joyful good news! He repeats Himself over and over, because His words are rejected over and over. There is this unnatural, unrelenting hostility toward everything Jesus says. I found no indication that anyone in that audience believed in Him after hearing it!! They hate Him without a cause. When we preach the good news of Christ, we also meet up with unnatural resistance. But often it's like talking to a wall. Grace abounding to the chief of sinners. Chapter 8: Agonizing over the severity of his sin "Thus I went on for many weeks, sometimes comforted and sometimes tormented; "This Scripture did also most sweetly visit my soul, 'And him that cometh into me, I... for full notes: http://www.lbible.org/index.php?proc=msg&sf=vw&tid=1453

After winning an Oscar for co-writing the film 'Moonlight,' McCraney says he received a lot of opportunities, many of which he turned down. "Some of it had to do with waiting for the other shoe to drop," he says. He's now the creator of the TV series 'David Makes Man,' which is in its second season on OWN. The series begins with a Miami boy whose mother struggles with addiction — and has echoes of McCraney's own childhood. Also, Maureen Corrigan reviews Anthony Veasna So's posthumously published short story collection 'Afterparties.'And as the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks approaches, a new biography traces Osama bin Laden's path from a shy, religious teenager to the leader of a global jihadist group dedicated to mass murder. Journalist Peter Bergen, who met the al-Qaida leader in 1997, says that a series of events kept pushing bin Laden "further and further down the path of radicalization." Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 6:41 Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." 6:42 They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" 6:43 Jesus answered them, "Do not complain among yourselves. 6:44 No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 6:45 It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. 6:46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. 6:47 Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 6:48 I am the bread of life. 6:49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 6:50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 6:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/biblereadingplanvp/message

Wouldn't New Zealand be the perfect place if it weren't for the gangs?Over the years you've probably heard dozens of politicians promise gang crackdowns, tough policies to curb them, rein them in, or just lock 'em up.Electronic Income Management is new terminology to me, but the idea itself has been around a fair while. The Act Party says it wants to impose it on gang members when they're receiving benefits. The idea is to make sure children being raised in the homes of gang members have their basic needs met.So, money coming in from a benefit would be controlled electronically so it couldn't be spent on, well, you know where it goes.Instead, Act wants it used on the children, making sure they're properly fed and clothed. In principle, I have no objection to that at all.Not so long ago, Simon Bridges was talking refusing benefits altogether if a gang member couldn't prove where their assets had come from, and that they'd been paid for legitimately. What about the kids caught up in that? They didn't get to choose their parents. As I said at the outset, the gangs and what they do in and to our society are to me the saddest and most shameful thing about this beautiful country. The trouble is, every time we get to an election, the beauty contest between political parties is ‘who's going to smash the gangs hardest?'And what have we got from that? Growing numbers, rising inter-gang violence and an epidemic of P.It's time for a radically different approach. Is Electronic Income Management the answer? To be honest, I believe it's wishful thinking, at best.

''And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor (Matthew 27:2).'' As we compare our Lord's Passion to His birth in this Advent season, we see one great irony. Pilate got what Herod the Great wanted. Herod the Great got what Pilate wanted. Herod the Great wanted Jesus dead as a baby (Matthew 2:13). He slaughtered the innocent boys of Bethlehem, trying to kill Jesus. Herod wanted Jesus dead because He could make Himself a contender for the Jewish crown. Herod didn't want to give up his power. Pilate wanted Jesus to go free. He didn't want anything to do with killing Jesus. He tried every way he could imagine to free Jesus. He offered the current public enemy number one, only to find out that Jesus was even more of an enemy of the public. At least the public who was vocal that Friday morning. In the end, Jesus was saved from murderous Herod. Jesus was murdered under the downcast, sorrowful eyes of Pontius Pilate. What Herod salivated about, Pilate wept about. The holy, innocent Child was rescued so that He might grow into the holy, innocent Man who would die for you and me. Amen.

But do we still need to be concerned about the size of our barns? The short answer is yes. While very few of us even have barns these days, Jesus' message in that parable is every bit as important for us today. Let's look at the first part of the parable, Luke 12:16-19. That's where Jesus says,The land of a rich man produced plentifully and he thought to himself, What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?'And he said, I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. There are people in the world who might read that and think, Hey, that sounds like a solid, practical solution! You've got too much stuff coming in, your barns aren't big enough, you need bigger barns. What's wrong with that? Well, the rich man finds out what's wrong in the next two verses, which read, But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God. If that theme sounds familiar to you, there's a good reason. Charles Dickens no doubt borrowed it when he wroteA Christmas Carol.Of course there, Ebenezer Scrooge takes on the role of the rich fool, obsessed with money and possessions. But unlike the Rich Fool, Ebenezer gets a second chance. And we do too. What does rich toward God mean? It's an unusual phrase and God's Word doesn't elaborate on it. But we can get an idea of its meaning by contrast. It's the opposite of building bigger barns or laying up earthly treasure for yourself. Being rich toward God is acknowledging that we're made forHim, not for our own pleasure or possessions. Our abundance is in God, not our bank accounts. Rich toward God means counting God as greater riches than anything on the earth. And it means using earthly riches to show how much we value God. How do we do that? By giving generously to His Kingdom. But the Rich Fool did none of that. He thought only of himself. When he died, he left his earthly treasure behind. But Jesus isn't saying that our works save us. He's saying that not doing the good works we were designed for will hurt our relationship with God. Jesus is teaching that money and possessions are dangerous because they can lure us out of love for God and keep us from treasuring Him. The problem wasn't that he had become rich, but that the Rich Fool ceased to view God as his supreme treasure. If God had been his treasure what would he have done differently? Instead of saying, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry, he would have said something like this: God, this is all yours. You have made my fields prosper. Show me how to express with my riches thatYouare my treasure and that riches are not. I already have enough. I don't need more luxury and leisure. Had he said that, the Rich Man wouldn't have been a fool at all. He would have been a very wise man who was rich toward God. He would have believed what Jesus says in Acts 20:35, It is more blessed to give than to receive. The Rich Fool learned that the hard way, but we don't have to. We can take God's Word for it. On today's program we also answer your questions: Could you tell me some ways to increase my credit score? Is there a specific number of times, when a lender pulls my credit, that it won't effect my credit score? But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven." (Matthew 26:63-64).'' The question is asked. The gauntlet has been thrown down. Will Jesus declare His Godhood or not? Was this His time? Would He reveal His glory to the Jews now? He doesn't reveal His glory outwardly. But He reveals everything verbally. Jesus attests to the truth of Caiaphas' statement. But Jesus continues to confess His glory. "From now on." From this moment forward. "You will see the Son of Man seated." Jesus. The Son of Man. Seated on a throne. Seated in authority over the Sanhedrin. "Seated at the right hand of Power." Jesus has absolute judgment over life and death. Heaven and Hell. "And coming on the clouds of Heaven." Jesus would leave, but He would come back. He departs to Heaven and returns from Heaven to exercise His judgment. Jesus is the Son of God. He is seated at the right hand of God's Power. He is coming back. And all will confess His glory on that Day. Amen.

And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." (Matthew 26:62-63).'' After hearing all the various charges, Caiaphas glares at Jesus who stands in silence. Befuddled by our Savior's silence, he demands that Jesus tell him whether He is the Messiah, the Son of God, or not. Is Caiaphas thinking about Isaiah 53? The Suffering Servant's silence as a sheep before its shearers? Probably not. Caiaphas is typically seen in history as an opportunist. That's how he achieved the high priesthood. He was more of a politician than a theologian. So he adjures Jesus. He solemnly charges him. On the pains of God's eternal wrath. Are you the Christ? The question that everyone wanted to ask Jesus. But many don't want to hear the answer. Jesus hadn't said anything in his trial. Would He answer the question this time? We'll find out next time. But I ask you. Is Jesus the Christ? Is He '''YOUR''' Messiah? Amen.

Hi lovely, It's Selina here this week with a deep, inspiring and juicy conversation for you all about finding your voice, with the queen of heart-felt expression, Nicola Rae Wickham.I've known Nicola for a number of years now and every time I sit down in a conversation with her, whether it is just between us or recording a podcast episode to share, she always brings a depth, warmth, wisdom and power to it that leaves me inspired and moved and this week's conversation has to have been the most powerful to date. In case you don't know Nicola, she is an award-winning coach and mentor, founder of ‘A Life More Inspired' and host of the ‘Dream and Do' podcast. In her own words she is ‘on a mission to help big-hearted (deep thinking and big feeling) creatives find, use and amplify their voice and make a real WHOLEHEARTED and positive impact in the world.'And wow, does she lead by example. Over the past 18 months I have witnessed Nicola step into her power in a whole new way, find her voice and use it to make a positive impact both in her business, her own life and the world around her.In this episode we talk about: Finding her voice in business and how she learnt to attract her ideal clients Finding her voice and speaking her truth as a black woman during Black Lives Matter and ever since The healing power of speaking your truth The importance of being discerning around WHO your share your truth with Why people-pleasers in particular struggle with finding their voice Tips on how to start practicing speaking your own truth We also used the conversation as a chance to reflect together on each of our healing around racism over the past year, the work we have both done with Nova Reid to help us with that healing and what we are each committing to doing moving forward to carry on with that healing. I am so looking forward to you hearing this conversation. While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, -A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. 13 And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, 'Do business with this until I come back.' 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' 15 When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done. 16 The first appeared, saying, 'Master, your mina has made ten minas more.' 17 And he said to him, 'Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.' 18 The second came, saying, 'Your mina, master, has made five minas.' 19 And he said to him also, 'And you are to be over five cities.' 20 Another came, saying, 'Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief- 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man- you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.' 22 He said to him, 'By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow- 23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest-' 24 Then he said to the bystanders, 'Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' .....

Sermon Audio – Cross of Grace

Mark 3:20-35 Then [Jesus] went home; and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind.' And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.'And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. ‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin' — for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.' Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.' And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?' And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.'My working title for this sermon all week has been, “Crazy is as crazy does,” partly because there's enough to unpack in all of these verses to make a preacher nuts, but mostly because of the actions of Jesus and the accusations against him for having lost his mind. The nutshell of it all for me is that this is another moment in the life and times of Jesus when he's under the microscope and under attack, even, for the ministry he's begun. He's being accused by the scribes – some of the leaders of the synagogues – which is a thing we hear often in Scripture. He's being worried over by his family, which isn't such popular Biblical theme. He's being followed by overwhelming, overbearing crowds of people. And he's trying to convince everyone that he hasn't “gone out of his mind;” that he's not crazy; that he isn't possessed – at least not by the powers of Satan or Beelzebul, as some of them assume. But Jesus is possessed, it seems – overcome with and inspired by the Holy Spirit, I mean. And that Holy Spirit – bestowed upon him through baptism – was moving Jesus to do some pretty surprising, shocking, out-of-the-ordinary, hard-to-swallow sorts of things. And people were taking notice. And people were suspicious. And they were afraid, some of them, and angry, some of them, and out of sorts about it all. So they assumed and accused and questioned and condemned all the things about Jesus that they couldn't see or understand or wrap their heads or their hearts around. And they chalked it all up to “crazy.”Because that's how people are, too much of the time, isn't it? We are suspicious of the odd-balls. We assume and accuse and question and condemn. Sometimes we simply dismiss those we don't understand or who push us out of our “normal” or who move us away from what's comfortable or familiar or safe. Sometimes, we even kill them. Which, of course, is where all of this got Jesus. And it's been that way ever since, really, for the oddballs… the movers and shakers… the envelope pushers. It happened to Stephen and to Paul and to Peter, too.More recently, of course, I think about Mahatma Gandhi and Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King, Jr. And since June is PRIDE month, I think about Harvey Milk and Marsha P. Johnson and Matthew Shepard, too. Oddballs and eccentrics, each in their own right. Jesus freaks, some of them. Outsiders, others of them. Non-conformists, all. Rebels. Misfits. Trouble-makers, even. Their families and friends and neighbors might even have thought them to be their own kind of crazy, perhaps. And when we take Jesus out of the stained-glass windows of our collective mind's eye, he is all of those things, too – a trouble-making, non-conforming, rebellious kind of outsider. And today's gospel reminds us that all of his preaching and teaching and healing was so revolutionary that it made people believe Jesus was crazy, that he had gone out of his mind. Even his family tried to stop him – either because they agreed maybe he really was losing his marbles, or because they were genuinely afraid for his safety, or their own. Others, like the scribes, thought he just might be the devil himself – or at least possessed by Beelzebul. And it's hard to blame them, really. Jesus was doing and saying some pretty amazing things which didn't bode well for a lot of people – especially the ones in power – but good news that promised nothing but blessing and redemption and fullness of life for those who had, up until then, been persecuted, left out, sidelined, and worse. (The other oddballs, misfits, outcasts, and whatnot.) This Good News was crazy.Last week, we heard Jesus promise that God loved the world – the whole world and nothing but the whole world – and that God sent Jesus into the midst of it all to save and redeem it. These disciples he'd gathered to follow him and to help with this ministry were nothing to write home about – Jesus loved oddballs and misfits, too, of course. Fishermen. Tax collectors. Women. All of them charged with helping the Kingdom of God come to pass. And people were being cured. Demons were being cast out. Sins were being forgiven. More misfits were being welcomed into the mix and lives were being changed by it all. It was crazy.Because what makes “crazy” “crazy,” is that it doesn't line up with what people expect, with what people are used to, with what people think they want or need in their lives. So Jesus meets all of the criteria on the report card for crazy. He is just exactly what the scribes and other religious leaders weren't looking for in a Messiah – this peacemaker; this forgiver of sins; this living, moving, breathing force of mercy, love, and grace in their midst. So, if Jesus was crazy by the world's standards, it makes a wannabe follower of his wonder what all of that might have to do with you and me?Well, I think the answer is in that bit at the end of today's Gospel, when Jesus says, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?' And then, looking at the knuckleheads surrounding him, he answers his own question: “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”So, I think what makes us brothers and sisters to Jesus is when we're just as inspired by, just as overwhelmed with, just as possessed by the Holy Spirit – just as “crazy” as Jesus, if you will, because of the grace we've received and by our willingness to share it at all costs. And crazy is as crazy does. So, what if we spent more time – as children of God, as followers of Jesus – trying to be crazy by the world's standards, instead of conforming to what the world or the Church, even, thinks we should do or be or look like? For the record, I don't think it always has to be big, off-the-charts, headline or history-making levels of crazy.I think crazy might look like bending over backwards to be as safe as possible over the course of the last year of this pandemic, in order to love our neighbor and to protect the vulnerable – at times when others would not, and in ways that may not have always made sense. I think crazy would mean giving more money and resources away for the sake of others and our ministry – to the point that people would think we were nuts.I think crazy would mean we'd let more people in – so that the line for communion on Sunday morning would make guests wonder if they were in church, or at the bar; in prison or at the hospital; in the middle of a pride parade, a homeless shelter, or the United Nations.I think it would mean we'd forgive more readily – so that enemies and grudges wouldn't steal one more moment of our energy, one more ounce of our soul, one more second of our precious time.I think it would mean we'd stop fighting about things the politicians and cable news networks inspire us to fight about. And I think, instead, we would start fighting against and worrying about extreme poverty, violence against women and children, systemic racism, consumerism, and the rate at which people die every day, all over the world, of preventable, treatable diseases or from lack of clean water.I think crazy would look like the Kingdom of God happening among us, the Kingdom of God happening through us, the Kingdom of God happening for us, and for the sake of the world. And I think that would just be crazy – in every holy, wonderful, faithful, gracious way we can't always imagine; but crazy in ways that only God can accomplish – through the likes of oddballs and misfits like you and me – when we muster the kind of humility, courage, and faith to let it happen.Amen

When the heretics kept silent, Achilleus went on, 'And if the Son of God is equal to the Father, as we believe, let oil flow from this stone,' at which oil flowed out. Returning to Larissa, the holy bishop cast down many pagan temples, built many churches, cast out many demons, and reposed in peace.

Well Hi there. It has been ages since I've recorded a podcast last, but I just had to hop on. This episode is about how I've realized that éverything that really matters to me, I haven't manifested myself. It has manifested me...! I tell you all about it in this episode. It is very well possible that you are trying to make things work, and are trying to manifest everything and anything, and are searching for your purpose, but by doing so are totally missing what wants to be manifested to you and through you...! It was a huge AHA moment for me, after I've done my own 28 day experiment with Pockets full of JOY (my Dutch new book/experiment 'Pockets vól met JOY, een 28-daags experiment met de Wet van Aantrekking'): https://www.pocketsvolmetlou.nl Once you start working with the law of Attraction, changes are that you are going for the things that aren't going to make you happy, or that you embark on a quest to get everything on your vision board. But if you make JOY your only JOB, you will manifest things that you wouldn't even KNOW to put on your vision boards. This episode is about all the things that have manifested me and that I had nothing to do with to 'make it happen'. 'And it was at that age, poetry arrived in search of me' ~Pablo Neruda. You may not remember, but God does remembers the thoughts you went through in your younger years to decide to neglect or deny Him. Love yourself and family enough to seek God until you know He has revealed to you the truth about salvation and how to obtain salvation to become a child of God! I don’t know what it would take to convince you of the reality of God, but God does and He will answer you in personal ways that you will know it is Him and not your imagination, and again I don’t know how He will reveal Himself to you, but I know He Will. ****Please listen to my Podcasts on God Loved Esau, John 3:16 and my other messages on the errors of calvinists' election and predestination, they will change your life too. ****I will give $10,000 to anyone’s ministry who can show me in the Scriptures where I am wrong about Calvinism being a lie of the devil. on @KLRNRadio.com CST Sat #GPWF #Christian or anytime on rahardin.com, Pods.

And can it be that we're finally talking about one of Charles Wesley's hymns?? Why, yes it can. In this week's episode, we'll be looking into one of his greatest hits. We'll be talking about Charles Wesley's post-ordination conversion, touching on why some Christians don't like him, and, of course, discussing one of Cara's favourite hymns. My guest on this show, Dan Rogers, created a firestorm online with his article, “'And that's okay:' Not all volunteers want to operate like FDNY.” Here's a quote from the article, which appears on the FireRescue1.com website: “We often try to ‘push' pride in our department onto the younger members. But many of them weren't raised with the same sense of community as we were, so they will likely never carry that pride. And that's OK.” Readers, as they always do, came to different conclusions about what Dan was saying. One commenter said, “…those joining a volunteer fire department should be told what's expected of them. There's a minimum standard, what drills/trainings are expected, how many calls are expected from them. A fire service is a para-military organization, not the Girl Scouts. Do the job or quit.” A reader responded, “Not sure the size of your agency, but for many rural departments if you require all members to be all in all the time without spending time with hobbies and family, you'll likely have a [smaller] membership.” Another said, “We are no longer, or should no longer be the fraternity that is exclusive to certain members of the community who meet at the fire hall and have a card and beer party, those days are long gone!” So...what did Dan Rogers really mean in his commentary? I found out this week. Dan is a third-generation firefighter. He joined the Witt, Illinois, Volunteer Fire Department in 2005, and he's now assistant chief. Support this podcast

In the book of Isaiah, in the same context in which Jesus quotes to start His earthly ministry, we read some amazing prophecies related to the soon-coming time of Jacob's trouble, the great Tribulation and the Second Advent where Peace personified finally shows up. When we rightly divide these passages, we find much that will help us here and now in the Church Age to prepare ourselves for Flight #777 on Titus213 Airlines. The main theme of the bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is not sin, it's not the cross, and it's not anything other than the revelation of the coming King and the coming Kingdom. It is about that kingdom that God tells us to "give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth." Today I would like to bring you a message on what you can do to give God no rest until He removes us in the rapture to start the timeline that will bring in the Kingdom of one thousand years of perfect rule and righteousness.

"The consideration of these things has long engaged me to attend to this matter, with the utmost diligence and care, and exactness of search and inquiry, that I have been capable of. It is a subject on which my mind has been peculiarly intent, ever since I first entered on the study of divinity. But as to the success of my inquiries it must be left to the judgment of the reader of the following treatise." As I understand it, a Sticky Wicket is a wet field or pitch at a Cricket match. We are introduced to what makes Matthew 6:13 troublesome, outline the next few episodes, and learn what a googly is as we examine; Matthew 6:13 'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.]' The word of God says: God cannot and will never lead anyone into temptation. Men of whom the world was not worthy experienced mockings and scourgings, chains, and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were put to death with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated. The brackets in, [For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.] pose questions as well. Glory to God in the highest!
