In this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, we reach the end game of our two ongoing side ventures – BRUCE WILLS US: A Pod Charles Cinecast Brucie Bonus, where we've been looking at some of our favourite films from Bruce Willis every once in a while on the main timeline, and SHYAMALAMANIA, where we've been charting the films of M. Night Shyamalan in special Patreon exclusives.Join hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas, as they head back to Philadelphia to see how their favourite a former football player turn invincible security guard, David Dunn, is doing, after spending the last near 20 years honing his real-life superhero powers. But first, the boys must meet the Beast! That's because in 2016, M. Night delivered, probably, the first ever "stealth sequel" and first ever supervillain origin story in one package with SPLIT. James McAvoy stars as Kevin, a man with dissociative identity disorder who kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls (one of which is Anya Taylor-Joy) in an isolated underground facility. The film might have pissed off some people in the mental health community, but it marked a true return to form for M. Night, where he captivated audiences with a truly gripping story, featuring McAvoy in one of his career best performances. Then, M. Night shattered our brains by placing a Bruce Willis as David Dunn cameo at the end of this what felt like a standalone story, making it part two in the Unbreakable Universe aka the Eastrail 177 Trilogy. M. Night would follow up with GLASS in 2019, bringing back David Dunn (Willis), who is on the lookout for a super strong man known as the Beast (McAvoy). After their initial encounter, both men are arrested and sent to a psychiatric hospital, where a doctor (Sarah Paulson) attempts to convince them their "powers" are just in their heads. However, Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass, the returning Samuel L. Jackson, is also a patient in this facility, and has other plans for his superhero brethren. We end where we began with this double episode, and as always there is some clunky writing, bad acting, a few silly twists, with a pinch of Biblical references and potential allusions to M. Night's career – all the ingredients that make an M. Night film great. "This was an origin story the whole time." If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It really helps us out!
How does this film's attempt at a realistic or plausible variation on the theme of superheroes work as compared with more mainstream films in that genre? How does Elijah Price's disease, and his mother's attempts to counter his fear, lead him to believe comic books contain a kernel of truth with regard to people that are physically impervious to harm, and how does this lead him to discover David Dunn? How does Elijah attempt to convince Dunn that he needs to play the role of protector? What was Elijah's ultimate purpose in causing catastrophic incidents, including the train derailment that opens the action for Dunn? How does the scene at the train station, where Dunn intuits or sees various crimes illustrate a more realistic or down-to-earth superhero theme, in that he must conduct a sort of triage before he acts? How effective is the effort to place the super-hero theme in a more restrained and realistic environment, and how does it motivate the dilemmas the characters face? How does Shyamalan work with the comic book genre's notion of a fatal weakness in order to ground and make plausible Dunn's superior abilities?

Episode 133. We watched M. Night Shyamalan's trilogy of unconventional superhero thrillers, Unbreakable (2000), Split (2017), and Glass (2019). Security guard David Dunn is the sole survivor of a massively fatal train crash who realizes he isn't just lucky, he's invulnerable, and he's always felt a duty to protect the people of Philadelphia. Art curator Elijah Price was born with terribly fragile bones, unsure of why he exists in this world, but sure that comic books have a core of truth to them and that superheroes and villains must be real. Kevin Wendell Crumb is a man with multiple identities taking over his life, fighting for control, and convinced that he contains a secret identity with beast-like strength and ferocity. What does the converging of these men mean for truth, justice, and humanity itself? The Whatnauts present The Review Show, a weekly book club style podcast for all sorts of pop culture. Elijah Price is the main character in the movie Unbreakable and later teams up with Kevin Crumb in Glass. These characters have interesting psychological things going on. They both have rare disorders and are fascinating to explore.
The long awaited (kinda) conclusion of M.Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable trilogy *cough*cashgrab*cough* brought some mixed emotions to the crew. While Adam, who was actually excited to witness the story come to a head, Pat was more inclined to begrudgingly tolerate this twist-laden mess. Mostly built off a limited cache of goodwill brought on by James McAvoy's brilliant acting in "Split." That can only get you so far though... was it far enough for M.Night to recapture a place in our hearts? (Spoiler: No) 2000's Unbreakable and 2016's Split come together in this comic-book-like thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as security guard David Dunn, who uses his supernatural abilities to track criminals, as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass, in an entirely new position. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb's superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men. Yes, it's as grandiose as it sounds.

Writer/Director: M Night ShyamalanSynopsis: Kevin Wendell Crumb's monstrous personality The Beast is still on the loose, terrorizing Philadelphia. Luckily the city has a hero looking out for them, one who has been dubbed The Overseer. We know him as David Dunne, who has been working in conjunction with his now grown son to keep the streets safe. Of course, the powers that be do not condone vigilante justice, so when The Overseer finally tracks down The Beast their tussle attracts the attention of the authorities, who promptly toss both of them in a mental hospital. Enter Sarah Paulson, a doctor who specializes in the delusion that one is a superhero. She has been given the opportunity to treat her new patients for three days with the goal of getting them to realize they are just ordinary men. But wait! There's a third party in the mix. Namely, Elijah Price has been a resident of this hospital since we left him at the end of Unbreakable, living in a drug-induced stupor. Now that we have all the ingredients we just mix & serve.Next up, the gang checks out one of Amy's favorite films of 2018, the exceedingly weird Possum. Rent it on demand & we'll see you back here in two weeks to discuss.Intro/outro music courtesy of Peter Perfect. Hello Filmy People! This week John and Jaimie review The Favorite. In the early 18th century, England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne occupies the throne, and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and a mercurial temper. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing, and Abigail sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots. We go through this year’s Oscar nominations and give our hot take on who is going to win. We also review Glass, M. The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, get mental with this week's review of M. Night Shyamalan's Glass (2019), the trilogy-concluding sequel to Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016). The film unites Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy under one roof, as their respective characters are psychologically evaluated by franchise newcomer Sarah Paulson. Will Jackson's titular Elijah Price, aka Mister Glass, be able to outthink the shrink and cast his fellow patients as superheroes (or supervillains) in full view of the public? And will we care, once the time comes?

Glass serves as a sequel to two films from M. Night Shyamalan, 2000's Unbreakable and 2018's Split, the latter of which tied itself to the former with the post-end title stinger. Bruce Willis makes his return as the ‘unbreakable' security company owner David Dunn, who, along with his adult son (and sole employee) Joseph, is trying to track down a crazy roaming the streets of Philadelphia who is abducting teenage girls. James McAvoy continues his portrayal of Kevin Wendell Crumb, aka The Horde, a conglomerations of split personalities that take over Kevin's body at various points, including the homicidal brute known as The Beast, who is the one feeding on those girls David is looking for . Samuel L. Jackson also returns from Unbreakable as the titular character, the brittle mastermind self-named Mr. Glass, aka Elijah Price, who has apparently been laying low for some time under heavy sedation. The three end up rounded up and subsequently kept separate chambers within a high-security psychiatric facility led by Sarah Paulson's Dr. Ellie Staple, whose specialty is in rehabilitating persons who believe they are superheroes. From Split, Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Casey Cooke, who survived her terror-filled first meeting with The Horde while in its persona as The Beast, but who finds herself drawn to help him escape his inner demons.
