Trinity was only 14 years old when she stumbled into the chat room where she would be groomed and abused for three years by online extremists. The group, known as 764, convinces children to commit unimaginable harms to themselves and others, like self harm. Ioanna Roumeliotis tells Mark Kelley about The Fifth Estate's investigation into the group one investigator describes as “absolutely evil,” and Trinity's mother explains why she feels the RCMP didn't do enough to help her daughter.
This week, Paul Palango and Adam Rodgers discuss the Federal election, which was called the day this podcast was recorded, and what to expect over the next few weeks of campaigning. The hit Netflix show, Adolescence, has been drawing interest for its portrayal of what might cause a young boy to commit serious violent offences. That same theme has been covered by the Fifth Estate in a story in Canada about online luring and the harms that result. We discuss the RCMP's capacity and willingness to confront these new types of crimes in Canada. We then welcome Frank Magazine's Andrew Douglas to fill us in on some stories that he has been covering (and often breaking), including the recent drug-related murder in Sydney, NS. Andrew also brings his perspective on the state of local media in Nova Scotia, how Frank Magazine NS has been able to thrive, and why the public is underserved by the current model.

In this episode, Beth shares her long road to recovery after leaving Grenville, detailing the emotional toll of the 16-year legal battle that ultimately brought justice to survivors. "Hey, it's Amory. We've had such a huge response for Beyond All Repair that the team and I are thinking and talking about what we might bring to you in the future. But in the meantime, we wanted to keep things going, at least for now, with something a little different. So, as you may know, I'm the co-host of another show called Endless Thread. This is a show about mysteries and history, all connected to the internet. Back in April of 2020, my Endless Thread co-host Ben Brock Johnson and I released a real doozy of a story. It's about alleged crimes at one of the highest-ranking institutions of higher ed and medicine, connected to the MKUltra experiments conducted on people by the CIA during the Cold War. It's also a story about the origins of psychiatry, a dangerous doctor. And a group of people, often women, who have been fighting for their personal stories to be heard. We're putting this series into this feed for just a limited time, so listen now while you can to this set of stories called Madness. And we'll be in touch with more Beyond All Repair news in the future." About the episode: "Madness: The Secret Mission for Mind Control and the People Who Paid the Price" — a 5-part investigative series from Endless Thread — unravels the shocking history of CIA-funded mind-control experiments. In this first episode, we hear about powerful accounts of abuse at a psychiatric hospital in Montreal, and the renowned doctor who conducted these disturbing experiments on his unwitting patients. Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Greg Marchildon speaks with Julian Sher about his book, The North Star: Canada and the Civil War Plots Against Lincoln. The North Star explores the complex and often overlooked role of Canada during the American Civil War, focusing on its unexpected involvement in both supporting the Confederate South and plotting against President Abraham Lincoln. The book reveals the darker side of Canada's history, which contrasts with its widely recognized support for escaped slaves. It highlights key figures such as Anderson Abbott, Emma Edmonds, and Edward P. Doherty, as well as the Canadian elite's ties to the Confederacy, including funding operations and hiding conspirators. Through vivid portraits of cities like Montreal and Toronto, the book uncovers Canada's hidden role in the war, offering a meticulously researched and relevant account of historical events. Julian Sher is an award-winning journalist and author of seven books, including Until You Are Dead and White Hoods. He has worked as an investigative reporter for the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail and was Senior Producer for CBC's The Fifth Estate. His documentaries, like Nuclear Jihad and Ghosts of Afghanistan, have won major awards. Sher also advocates for media freedoms as a Senior Fellow at Toronto Metropolitan University's Centre for Free Expression. This episode is sponsored in part by Betterhelp. Beth Granger was born into a nightmare disguised as an elite Christian boarding school. Raised within the walls of Grenville Christian College, she endured decades of coercion, public shaming, and physical abuse—hidden behind the institution's polished reputation. As a child of staff members, she was subjected to even harsher discipline, forced to navigate a world where "The Mothers" ruled with an iron grip, friendships were forbidden, and obedience was demanded at all costs. In this first part of our conversation, Beth recounts her early years at Grenville, the cult-like tactics used to control students and staff, and the staggering legal battle that eventually led to the school's closure. The Fifth Estate investigation helped expose the truth, bringing forward allegations of abuse that had been buried for decades. You can watch their full report, School of Secrets, here. Beth's memoir, Born and Razed: Surviving the Cult Was Only Half the Battle, reveals the painful truth about growing up in an environment designed to break its members. But as Beth's story proves, survival is just the beginning. Trigger warning for child abuse, drug abuse, and eating disorders. For decades, the CIA conducted classified mind control experiments under the infamous MKUltra program, subjecting unsuspecting patients to horrific psychological and drug-induced torture in the name of "science." In this chilling episode, we uncover the shocking 1984 lawsuit in which former victims sued the U.S. government for their role in covert brainwashing experiments that left lives shattered.Through firsthand testimonies, declassified documents, and investigative reporting from The Fifth Estate, we expose the dark truth behind the CIA's secret psychiatric experiments, where patients were unknowingly subjected to LSD, electroshock therapy, forced comas, and psychological programming. How did the U.S. government justify such inhumane tests? What long-term damage did these victims suffer? And what hidden files and cover-ups still remain buried to this day?We delve deep into the origins of MKUltra, its connections to Cold War paranoia, intelligence operations, and the secret partnerships between the CIA and medical institutions. This case forced a rare reckoning with government abuse, but how much did the world really learn?Join us as we expose one of the darkest chapters in U.S. history and ask: how much control does the government really have over the human mind?

In this special episode of Rock is Lit, host Christy Alexander Hallberg hands the mic to teacher, podcaster, and DJ Andrew Smith, who interviews his friend Peter Werbe about Peter's debut novel, ‘Summer On Fire'. Peter also reads an excerpt from the book. Peter Werbe is a veteran of Detroit's alternative and commercial media scene, as well as a political activist. A member of the editorial collective of ‘Fifth Estate' magazine, his work appears in its online archive. His radio career spanned Detroit's major rock stations—WABX, WWWW, WRIF, and WCSX—where he hosted Nightcall, WRIF's phone-in talk show and the longest-running program of its kind in U.S. radio history (1970–2016). Peter's novel, written during the pandemic near his 80th birthday, is a fictionalized memoir about the 1967 Detroit Rebellion and its surrounding antiwar, psychedelic rock counterculture. Set in a transformative seven weeks, ‘Summer On Fire' explores the radical Detroit scene, featuring characters navigating protests, anarchism, fascist opposition, and rock and roll at the Grande Ballroom. Themes of ethical dilemmas echo today's societal crises. The book also captures the spirit of cultural icons like MC5, The Stooges, Wayne Kramer, and John Sinclair. Andrew Smith, host of Teacher On The Radio, is also a professor of English and religious studies at Tennessee Tech. More than 10,000 arrests, a mountain of drugs stopped at the border, and more than a hundred assassination attempts thwarted. Those are just some of the results of a massive police data hacking operation in Europe to disrupt organized crime. And at the center of it all – Vancouver tech company Sky Global – that promised communication couldn't be hacked by their encrypted phones.Frédéric Zalac, and Radio-Canada's investigative program Enquête teamed up with journalists from a dozen European media organizations for the year-long investigation. The documentary aired on The Fifth Estate as “Cracked: Crimes Behind Encryption.” You can watch it on YouTube. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts
Two weeks ago, Canada's ‘public broadcaster', on their formerly flagship investigative journalism TV program ‘The Fifth Estate', released a real humdinger of propaganda and lies about the Coutts Four case. Given that the CBC and other regime media in Canada had lied so much about the men involved when they bothered to report on the case at all, they ended up in an uncomfortable situation when Tony Olienick and Chris Carbert were found ‘NOT GUILTY' of conspiracy to murder police officers; a charge that the CBC had been heavily invested in using to whip up fear against anyone who dissented against the Covid Regime. In this situation of having attempted to convince the public of their guilt in the court of public opinion, and being rebuffed, instead of contending with the complexities of a case that involved malicious prosecution, lies, corruption, and the imposition of political prisoners on a modern western nation state, the CBC decided to double down on their true position as regime stenographers, and lie about everything some more. Joining me to discuss this blatant propaganda smearing operation, and dissect it to the nth degree, are Jaclyne Martin, herself a protester during Freedom Convoy and wife of Jerry Morin, one of the Coutts Four men. Also joining the show are Alex ‘Amazing Zoltan', independent journalist and documentarian, as well as Twitter Anon Buck McYoung whom you may remember from a post of his I hosted here on the Tort of Malicious Prosecution. I have a special request of everyone that listens to this - Christmas is coming, and this will be the third Christmas that Chris spends away from his children, and Tony spends away from his mom. It is quite clear that they are guilty of nothing, and are Political Prisoners of the venal and vindictive regime of Justin Trudeau, who, God willing, we will see the end of next year - around the same time as Chris and Tony should be free from their torture. The least you can do to express some gratitude for what they have endured, downstream of standing up for your rights, is to write them a letter and say Merry Christmas. After a notorious 2018 interview on CBC television, Kerry Winter became a familiar figure in the tale of the Shermans' deaths. “The Cousin Did It” wasn't just a snappy headline on the cover of The National Enquirer, it also became a favourite theory. Yet Kerry is not a suspect. And all these years later the humiliation, anger, and deep sadness Kerry feels towards his cousin Barry are still right on the surface. How did such a good thing go so bad, and why is Kerry so certain Barry killed Honey then killed himself? Was a man capable of “ripping off little orphans” also capable of killing his own wife? And himself?
