How are we going to deal with the pandemic at hand, and how do we return to ‘normal’? These are the questions at the forefront of our minds. Bluetooth may have an answer. Companies, like Estimote, from the first signs of trouble, have been taking measures to transform their existing technology to help in the era of COVID-19. Last time on the podcast, we talked with Jakub Kryzch, CEO of Estimote, about their new product, the LTE beacon. This time he is back to tell us about an innovative spin on that same product which now has the goal of providing a safer and healthier workplace environment through contact traceability. This product, worn around the neck or clipped to a belt, can anonymously and privately help individuals keep their social distance with lights and sounds, as well as help track back when individuals have potentially been exposed. While essential businesses, for example food and drug production, are the targets today to help increase the safety of their workplace, these type of technology pivots could be our hope when restarting the economy after this quarantine period. Tune in to see a demonstrations of Estimote’s Bluetooth contact tracing solution which is shipping now to companies in need, and how this relates to the other options for contact tracing. My guest today is Steve Cheney, the cofounder of Estimote. Before founding Estimote, Steve was the head of business and platform at GroupMe, which was acquired by Skype. I’ve been reading Steve's writing for more than half a decade, but this year, he picked up the pace of his publishing and now I’m hooked. This episode begins with the discussion of startup dynamics. We talked about fundraising, capital efficiency, and why Steve believes that every dollar from a customer is five times more valuable than a one dollar from an investor. Then we explore the world of frontier technologies. We talked about augmented reality, self driving cars, and image recognition software. Then at the end of the episode, Steve talks about why he's been so successful writing online. Steve talks about his journey of sharing his ideas, how he started writing for Techcrunch, and why writing online is the best way to get discovered right now. This was without question, my favorite part of the episode because it ties right into my work. I teach an online course called Write of Passage where students learn to accelerate their career by writing online and by building an audience. i hope you enjoy my conversation with Steve Cheney. On the August 24th, Estimote launched a first for the IoT industry, an LTE beacon. It leverages cellular LTE, GPS, and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity. This small device, fully programmable using JavaScript, was built on the idea of enabling asset tracking in both indoor and outdoor environments. Jakub Krzych, Estimote’s CEO, gives us a first look at this revolutionary product, how it works with the Estimote cloud, and their vision of empowering developers to “use the physical world as their canvas”. An interview with Richard Lucas by The Wall Street Lab Podcast - originally went on line here http://www.thewallstreetlab.co... is what they wrote "Richard Lucas is an angel investor who is currently involved with close to 20 different companies across a variety of industries. He has made many investments into world-class startups over the years, including deals with startups backed by the likes of Y Combinator. For example, Richard was an early investor in the company Estimote, which won the 2013 Tech Crunch disrupt in the Hardware category. Part of the reason why Richard is such a fascinating person to talk to, is that he is involved in a variety of projects outside of his main work. He is the founder of Cambentrepreneurs, an alumni network for the graduates of Cambridge University and others focusing on entrepreneurship. He is also the license holder of TEDxKazimierz, which is an independently organized Ted event in Krakow, Poland. Our interview with Richard is jam-packed with really great and practical insights into the mind of someone who, in his own words, thinks about the world in terms of problems and solutions. We touch on some of the red flags he looks for before deciding to invest in a business and the importance of building a company with an exit plan in mind: “If you don't build a company with an exit in mind, then you don't really prepare for it.” We also discuss the reasons why he has deliberately decided not to exited any of his business, despite having received offers to sell them: “I've never done an exit and that is not because I have never been offered money for my businesses, but it never seemed sensible to take money at 3x or 4x earnings, because 3 or 4 years later you have got the same amount of money if the company doesn't fail, and you still own it.” We also talk about his early experience as an entrepreneur and the lessons he learned, which he openly shares with us. You – yes, you – are lucky for living in an era of information abundance. Don't take our word for it: “The great advantage for listeners now is: you can be 19 and or even 10 and listen to this and think: oh, I won't make the same mistake as Richard Lucas. I am really jealous of you guys for being able to compress all that knowledge”. And this is just the tip of the iceberg!" About your host Richard Lucas Richard is a business and social entrepreneur who founded, led and/or invested in more than 30 businesses, Richard has been a TEDx event organiser, supports the pro-entrepreneurship ecosystem, and leads entrepreneurship workshops at all levels: from pre-schools to leading business schools. Pick your metaphor: Smartphones are "remote controls" for the physical world, or perhaps, as Steve Cheney argues, they're "cursors for the physical world". Either way, it's clear that the age of mobile is here, GPS is not enough, and with sensors all around us -- both outdoors and in indoor locations -- it's finally time for truly context-aware computing. But what will that take, both content- and design-wise -- is it all just about eliminating friction? And how are players like Apple and Google positioning themselves for this micro-mapped world? a16z's Benedict Evans and Estimote's Steve Cheney talk about these questions and more in this episode of the a16z Podcast...
How many people do beacons really reach today? That's the question that Chuck tackles on this episode. We are starting to see audited, authenticated numbers and those numbers are growing. From third party apps tapping into the beacons inside a Lord & Taylor to Estimote's incredible pool of developers, there is no doubt that we are being rapidly blanketed by a cozy cover of beacons. The beacons are there, what's their actual human reach. Watch the episode.
