This episode dives into recent legal battles, including the Supreme Court's landmark decision affirming therapists' right to help clients reconcile their feelings with their faith. We explore the dangerous parallels to other cultural issues like abortion and transgender rights, revealing how the push to silence dissent is less about science and more about imposing a restrictive moral order. Father Sullins discusses studies demonstrating that those who undergo efforts to diminish unwanted attractions often experience psychological benefits, including reduced suicidality, contrary to mainstream claims. You'll discover: how scientific data, from reputable studies by Diamond, Spitzer, and others, proves that change is possible and common; the real history of how therapy for unwanted same-sex attraction was eliminated from mental health guidelines; and how current laws threaten the freedom of religious and mental health professionals to serve their clients ethically. This is essential listening for anyone concerned about the growing suppression of what science and morality actually say about human sexuality—and why preserving the right to help those who want it is a moral imperative.
On this episode of So, You Like Horror?, we break down Midnight Mass, the slow-burning Netflix series from Mike Flanagan that challenges what horror can be. Joined by returning co-host Upnorth Scott, we explore how the show moves beyond traditional scares to examine faith, guilt, addiction, and the fear of death. We discuss the role of Crockett Island as an isolated community shaped by belief, Riley Flynn's struggle with trauma and loss of faith, and the contrast between doubt and certainty through characters like Bev Keane. We also take a closer look at Father Paul and how charisma and conviction can blur the line between faith and fanaticism. The conversation dives into the show's pacing, and how it builds tension through stillness rather than action. We break down the finale, its themes of accountability and acceptance, and how Midnight Mass compares to The Haunting of Hill House. At its core, this episode examines how belief shapes identity, how stories influence truth, and why this series continues to stand out in modern horror television. Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse and Father Paul Sullins unpack the myths and political narratives surrounding “conversion therapy,” sharing insights from their amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court. They challenge the American Psychological Association's portrayal of sexual orientation change efforts, expose the lack of rigorous evidence behind mainstream claims, and highlight how research on contributing factors—like childhood trauma—has been sidelined. The conversation also examines historical shifts in psychiatric policy, the suppression of certain kinds of research, and key studies showing that ethical, client-led therapy can yield psychological benefits without the coercive practices often cited by opponents.
