In this #FinallyFriday episode, host Matilda Siebrecht dives into the world of folklore with guests Colleen Deatherage and Ieva Pīgozne. Colleen, from the University of Alberta, combines her background in healthcare and social work with her expertise as a folklorist to explore how folklore aids in meaning-making, especially through material culture like textiles. Ieva, based at the Institute of Latvian History, is a dress historian whose work bridges archaeology and cultural anthropology to uncover the social and symbolic meanings of traditional dress and folklore. The guests explore the complexities of interpreting folklore, noting how historical biases and modern politics shape its study. Ieva warns of folklore's misuse in nationalist agendas, while Colleen highlights the need for caution in collecting and analyzing folklore to ensure respectful and accurate representation. They discuss overlaps with disciplines like archaeology and anthropology, underscoring folklore's role in giving voice to marginalized histories. Both share compelling examples: Ieva recounts insights gained from reenactment projects and folklore texts explaining archaeological anomalies, while Colleen describes using historical textiles to support patients' legacy-making in modern healthcare. Their projects reflect the versatility of folklore in understanding human experiences across time. This episode concludes the #FinallyFriday podcast series. The podcast's format will evolve, but it remains a vital platform for exploring cultural heritage.Support the show

In this month's episode of Finally Friday, Matilda chats with two specialists in nalbinding to find out all the details of the development, origins, and variety of this unique craft. Emma Boast is an archaeological small finds specialist with the University of York Department of Archaeology, specialising in early medieval and Viking Age material culture, and is also registered with the UK Guild of Master Craftsmen as a professional nalbinder with her business Nidavellnir.Together, our guests discuss their experiences and answer those burning questions that I'm sure all of us have had about nalbinding. Where and when did nalbinding start? What is the difference between it and knitting or crochet? How can we know if it's the right craft for us to try out? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this month's episode! Support the Show.

On this Friday edition of Sid & Friends in the Morning, the Biden administration is tripping over themselves as they're forced to resume construction on the southern border wall due to the massive amounts of illegal immigrants flooding the border and forcing their way into our country. Here in New York City, we're getting the worst of it as thousands upon thousands of these migrants are lining our streets on a weekly basis. Where is Mayor Eric Adams while the city disintegrates? Taking another pointless trip, this time to South America, to somehow try and deal with the ongoing crisis there. In other news of the day, there's been another big fentanyl bust in The Bronx, the legendary Chicago Bear Dick Butkus passes away at the age of 80, and the sweepstakes for the next Speaker of the House continues in Washington, D.C. Brian Kilmeade, Curtis Sliwa, Andrew Giuliani, Joe Tacopina, Lara Trump and Ed Romaine join the program on this Friday installment of New York City's best morning show.
