Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host) returns from his Oscar triumph five years ago with his first directorial effort since his worldwide smash Parasite, which remains the ONLY foreign language film to ever win the Oscar for Best Picture. This time around, he's directing a high concept sci-fi comedy adventure taking place in the future focusing on Mickey (Robert Pattinson) who works as an "Expendable" for a growing organization looking to colonize a snowy desolate planet. His job entails being used as a tester of various hostile environments, new viruses, potential vaccines, and any number of deadly situations which can occur on said planet. The key to his survival is that he doesn't survive most of these ordeals....they have the technology to simply clone him again to restart the process. :o And hilarity ensues! Also among this stacked cast are Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yuen. For Mickey, it's time to find out if the 17th time's the Charm. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Per wikipedia: Babylon 5: The Gathering is the test pilot movie of the science fiction television series Babylon 5, aired on February 22, 1993. It is also the first of six feature-length films in the Babylon 5 media franchise. The Gathering covers events which take place roughly one year before those of the first-season episode "Midnight on the Firing Line," providing a framework of backstories, political agendas, and personal relationships for some of the series' major characters.Following the success of the movie, Warner Bros. Television commissioned the series for production in May 1993, as part of its Prime Time Entertainment Network (PTEN); the first season would premiere in the United States nearly a year later, on January 26, 1994. The summer of 1982 was a blockbuster for sci-fi movies. Over the course of six consecutive weekends, eight movies in that genre premiered: E.T. Poltergeist. Tron. Blade Runner. Mad Max: Road Warrior. Conan the Barbarian. The Thing. Some were hits. Others were bombs. But all changed the course of filmmaking according to film critic Chris Nashawaty. In his new book, “The Future Was Now,” he shares behind the scenes details and explains why these films remain important today. We talk to Nashawaty and hear from you: How did these films impact you? Guest: Chris Nashawaty, author, "The Future Was Now: Madmen, Mavericks, and the Epic Sci-Fi Summer of 1982","Caddyshack: The Making of a Hollywood Cinderella Story"; former film critic, Entertainment Weekly

Emmerich's direction ensures a brisk pace, balancing explosive action sequences with moments of tension and character development. The screenplay, co-written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, skillfully interweaves multiple storylines, creating a tapestry of global perspectives. This approach heightens the stakes and fosters a sense of worldwide camaraderie, a theme poignantly encapsulated in President Whitmore's rousing speech rallying humanity to fight back on July 4th.It combines heart-pounding action, compelling performances, and state-of-the-art effects to deliver an unforgettable cinematic experience. The film's enduring popularity is a testament to its ability to tap into universal themes of courage, ingenuity, and the indomitable spirit of humanity. For fans of sci-fi and disaster films, “Independence Day” is a must-watch, a thrilling ride that captures the imagination and stirs the soul.
