Brittney Castro is a Certified Financial Planner and she’s here to help us answer your money questions - AND spend a good bit of time talking about the finances of running a business. Brittney is the founder of Financially Wise Women, as I mentioned, and it’s something that she really built from the ground up in her 20’s. I know that for a lot of us listening, it’s important to us - especially as we look at the new year -to reassess our careers, maybe make that transition to starting a business or growing our existing business, I thought this would be a good time of year to give you some tips.  Brittney is a fellow Chase ambassador and she’s here on behalf of Chase Ink to share some insights into running that business successfully, and how to find the right mentors for growing your business. It’s important to find the right financial mentors and sponsors to help make the financial aspects of your business simpler. Also, how to manage the money in your business and in your personal life at the same time. This is a hot question, right? How do I create boundaries, how do I create systems, how do I not dip into my personal savings to fund my venture? Of course, we also have your So Money questions, questions like how to afford supporting adult children? Yeah, it’s really hard to afford children like babies, childcare, it adds up and it’s really a lot for new parents but then, you know, the kids grow up and you find yourself still footing the bill even though they’re in their 20’s for things like school and graduate school. So we’re going to help a parent out on that end.  Also, how to retool your savings after paying down student loans? So if you’re somebody who is near the end of paying off student loans and you’re looking forward to it because you’re going to have better cash flow, what do you do with that cash flow now? How do you kind of reinvest that money and also, leveraging social media to promote your brand and your business. Thanks to Chase Ink for sponsoring this episode. For more visit chase.com/ink.

One of the most overlooked things from people is a savings. People think they’ll always be able to work, but in reality you never know what can happen.Even if you eat the perfect diet, exercise everyday, and really take care of your body things can (and will) still go wrong.Let’s face it, if something happens like you get hit by a car wouldn’t you rather have the option to rest and recover than not?And a savings isn’t just there for a rainy day. You may need it in order to get in on that dream investment opportunity, or to be able to (finally) start working for yourself instead of someone else. The point is, life happens. You never know what’s happening tomorrow: but you have to be ready for whatever God is going to throw at you next.To go more into this I brought on a very special guest, who went through one of the most traumatic life changing events you can image: Brittney Castro. Brittney Castro, CFP®. CRPC®, AAMS®, Founder and CEO, Financially Wise Women  Many of us grew up with the financial psychology mindset that spending money is bad. For example, do you cringe when you spend money or feel guilty? Do you hide your spending from family members? If so, then today’s episode is for you. Kathleen interviews Brittney Castro about spending – the good and the bad – and busts the myth that all spending is bad. Listen in and you may find that this show affects your spending habits and your romantic relationships. Key Take Aways: Conscientious spending is an important part of an overall financial plan. Therefore, when you develop a budget, it’s important to allocate money towards areas that you value most. These areas are those that bring you happiness or joy in your everyday life. For example, one area may be self-care. Investing in restorative activities makes you better able to take care of others and achieve more life/work balance. Money is a tool to invest in yourself for the long term. By investing in yourself in the long term, you can gain more self-confidence and strengthen your relationships. It’s all about the journey and progress over perfection. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There is no limit to the help you can ask for and actually asking for assistance makes your life easier and more fun! So build a team or find the resources to help you achieve your goals. ‘When I have the money, I'll work with a financial planner.' There is a lot of fear and stress around money, and a disproportionate number of women are intimidated by the prospect of working with a financial planner. It's never fun to be judged, and many of us operate under the mistaken notion that financial planning is reserved for the rich. Today's guest would argue that financial planners can help people in any income bracket, at any stage of their lives. Brittney Castro is the founder and CEO of Financially Wise Women, a financial planning firm that seeks to teach women and couples the art of managing their money the fun and simple way. She created the firm in an effort to help women get their financial lives in order, using an approach that is smart, compassionate and nonjudgmental. Castro is a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor, Accredited Asset Management Specialist, and a sought-after speaker and resource for national media outlets such as CNN, CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Entrepreneur. Castro also serves as the Chase Financial Education Ambassador to promote financial literacy, and a CFP Pro spokeswoman on the CFP Board campaign to educate more women and minorities about the career of financial planning. Today she shares how working with female clients allows her to be more authentic in a male-dominated profession, why a career in financial planning is a good fit for women, and the benefits of getting your financial life in order regardless of the size of your bank account.   Key Interview Takeaways Because women speak differently about their financial goals, it may be beneficial for female clients to work with a female financial planner. Castro finds that she can be more authentic with her female clients, approaching the topic of money from a uniquely female perspective. The CFP campaign to foster diversity in the profession seeks to educate women and minorities about financial planning as a viable career option. As a spokesperson for the campaign, Castro leverages her own journey, inspiring the next generation to consider a career in financial planning. The benefits of being a financial planner include a flexible work schedule as well as the opportunity to make a significant impact in people's lives. Castro sees the career as a good fit for women, and hopes to change the bleak statistic that less than 20% of CFPs are female. The process of sitting down with a financial planner involves three major components: 1) An initial consultation call, 2) Data, strategy and implementation meetings to build a budget and educate clients about their options, and 3) Review meetings to assess progress and address changes. Financial planners can help people in any income bracket, at any stage of their lives. You don't have to be a millionaire to benefit from the advice of a professional. Designing a financial plan and implementing systems around your money provides freedom, stability, clarity and peace of mind. Brittney Castro on How Millennial Financial Advisors Will Change Financial Services -- Part I

Between Now and Success

MILLENNIALS GET A LOT OF PRESS AND THERE'S GOOD REASON FOR THAT. They’re over 80 million strong, they’re digitally savvy, and they tend to think and act much differently than earlier generations. In this new series of podcasts, I interview several leading millennial advisors and explore their business models, their thinking, and how their cohort may reshape the financial industry over the next 15 years. Although there’s no definitive start and end date for this generation, it’s fair to say they range in age from about 35 to as young as 15. You may think they’re too young and too few in the business to have an impact on our industry. In the short-term, that’s true. But long-term, they’ll cause a titanic shift in how financial advice is conducted. As I spoke to these millennials, it’s clear—they’re smart, articulate, and definitely not your “traditional” RIA. They have different business models. They price their services differently. They market differently. And they’re not afraid to call out what they see as “problems” with the way financial services is structured today. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to these advisors and I know you’ll enjoy listening to their stories. Keep an open mind because they are the future of our business. First up is Brittney Castro, a talented and innovative RIA from Los Angeles. Brittney is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, entrepreneur, personal finance expert for women and Founder & CEO of Financially Wise Women. She specializes in working with busy, established professional and entrepreneurial women who are passionate about life and want to finally understand money—how to manage it, save it, invest it, and protect it—in a fun and simple way.

In this episode of the Cubicle Renegade Podcast I sit down with Brittney Castro, founder of Financially Wise Women and recently ranked one of the top 5 Certified Financial Planners in Los Angeles. We discuss her journey from working at a big financial firm to breaking off on her own and how she has used her blog to build up her client base over the past two years. Things we talk about in this episode: Why she took a job after college that was basically straight commissions. How she always knew she wanted to be a "business owner". How 50% of her clients come from her blog. What she did to get featured in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. How she has been able to work with her clients virtually in the same way as in person. Why the more information you give away for free the more likely you are to get paying customers and clients. How to get comfortable being on video and what your videos should be about. How to make the leap financially from employee to entrepreneur.
