In this episode, Chris welcomes David from the DC on Screen podcast and the Star Trek Universe podcast to revisit the comic book arc, “Superman: For Tomorrow” by Brain Azzarello and Jim Lee. David and I share our first impressions reading the story when it originally came out from 2004-2005 and discuss if our feelings have changed after re-reading it 15 years later. A cataclysmic event has struck the Earth. Millions of people have vanished without a trace. No one is left unaffected; not even Superman! But after a year, Superman is left with many questions. For a hero who tries to have all the answers, it's torture. And, just as the action heats up and the stakes are raised, one huge question emerges: Just how far is Superman willing to go "For Tomorrow?" Una Walkenhorst and Erin McGrane join us for this episode of Eight One Sixty. The two are co-organizing the Survivors' Stories: Stand Against Sexual Violence event this Thursday night at The Rino — an evening of songs, poetry and performance art that touches on the experience of sexual violence or harassment. You may know Una from her solo music as well as the amazing album she put out last year with her father, Bob Walkenhorst; the title track of the album, "For Tomorrow," was voted the No. 1 song of the year by Bridge listeners. Erin has been in a variety of projects over the years and is also currently known as Penny of the antique pop act, Victor & Penny. During the show we’ll hear from different musicians who are sharing their stories at the show including: Una Walkenhorst, Victor and Penny, Madison Mae Parker, Shoebox Money with Hannah Norris, Kat King and one of her projects, The Typing Pool, and more.
Pixcelation was the first interview I did with Team Lift when we started covering conventions for the YouTube channel. It was like watching him grows as we grew. This year, at Okashicon 2018, he decided that he was ending the Pixcelation brand. I won't lie, it was emotional for me to see a friend end his brand. I got to sit him down and we tlaked about life, branding, the need to create and being hyper creative. We discussed why we are our own worst critics. BIO:James Herd is a novelist, voice actor, singer, and online personality who has been active on the internet for a very long time. In the late 2000s, he conceptualized ‘The Intermine Legacy,’ which is an ongoing story that is being told through several novels and podcasts. In 2013, the first novel in ‘The Intermine Legacy’ was published, but since then has been undergoing redevelopment on a microscopic level, and is aimed for a republication in the near future. In the meantime, his audio production group Studio Intermine (also known as Intermine Studios) has released podcasts chronicling the events of the first novel, and they’re currently working on releasing new content. James can be heard as the voice of William McKinley in The Intermine Legacy: I am the Darkness (Intermine Studios); Edmund Dantes in Monte Cristo (Intermine Studios); Alexander Sartor in For Tomorrow: a Tale of Rebellion (Intermine Studios) and Drew in =MATCH (Vocal Loco). He’s also hosted a variety of singing competitions such as Animation Sensation, Golden Voices, Wires and Circuits, In The Booth and Re:Animated. I’m grateful that I forgot the iPod at home and had to stick entirely to vinyl. It happens that I’d carried in a few more albums than usual that night, and played from almost all of them. Forgive me that some of the tracks are pretty scratchy. I’ve had some of these albums for decades, and the scratches are almost like the scratches on me – markers of a passage through life, time and perspective, and all that they’ve encompassed. The scratchiest of these tunes, the first and last, the Ramsey Lewis and the Stevie Wonder, are from probably the first twenty or so albums I ever bought, years before I started taking care of them. I also think that these are among the best tunes in the set. Ramsey Lewis has never gotten his due, so far as I’m concerned. He’s a masterful pianist, with a style that can be funky, churchy and bluesy. And the composition, “Les Fleur” or “The Flowers” by another over-looked artist, Charles Stepney, casts a hauntingly beautiful mood. “Music of My Mind” was an extraordinary offering from Stevie Wonder, following closely on the heels of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” – two early 70’s albums that broke new ground as expressions of individual, musical visions. Not only did Wonder write and produce the entire album. He also – with the exception of two solos – plays all of the instruments. Other Set standouts include McLaughlin’s take on “My Foolish Heart” and the magnificent “For Tomorrow” from McCoy Tyner. Then, there’s Dionne Warwick with the lush and orchestral Bacharach/David tune “Check Out Time”. And if I were to pick out five more favorites, they’d be just great as these five! Thrive!
