I read from ejecta to elaborate. Early versions of the ejection seat were invented in the 1910s, presumably after someone was like "I would really like a way out of a crashing airplane, please and thank you." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ejection_seat The word of the episode is "ekphrasis". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekphrasis Theme music from Tom Maslowski https://zestysol.com/ Merchandising! https://www.teepublic.com/user/spejampar "The Dictionary - Letter A" on YouTube "The Dictionary - Letter B" on YouTube "The Dictionary - Letter C" on YouTube "The Dictionary - Letter D" on YouTube Featured in a Top 10 Dictionary Podcasts list! https://blog.feedspot.com/dictionary_podcasts/ Backwards Talking on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmIujMwEDbgZUexyR90jaTEEVmAYcCzuq dictionarypod@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/thedictionarypod/ https://www.threads.net/@dictionarypod https://twitter.com/dictionarypod https://www.instagram.com/dictionarypod/ https://www.patreon.com/spejampar https://www.tiktok.com/@spejampar 917-727-5757
Ejecta is a noun that refers to something that is thrown out. The Latin word ejectus (ee JEK toose) means ‘thrown out.' Our word of the day is derived from ejectus and has landed in English in the late 19th century. Here's an example of ejecta in use: Eddie tends to make a mess when he goes canoeing. All that ejecta from his canoe winds up polluting the lake with beer cans, food wrappers and other nasty stuff he tosses in the water.
It was humanity's first attempt at changing the motion of a celestial object.
Non-thermal emission from mildly relativistic dynamical ejecta of neutron star mergers by Gilad Sadeh et al. on Tuesday 29 November Binary neutron star mergers are expected to produce fast dynamical ejecta, with mildly relativistic velocities extending to $beta=v/c>0.6$. We consider the radio to X-ray synchrotron emission produced by collisionless shocks driven by such fast ejecta into the interstellar medium. Analytic expressions are given for spherical ejecta with broken power-law mass (or energy) distributions, $M(>gammabeta)propto(gammabeta)^{-s}$ with $s=s_{rm KN}$ at $gammabetagamma_0beta_0$ (where $gamma$ is the Lorentz factor). For parameter values characteristic of merger calculation results -- a "shallow" mass distribution, $1

A search for relativistic ejecta in a sample of ZTF broad-lined Type Ic supernovae by Alessandra Corsi et al. on Tuesday 18 October The dividing line between gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and ordinary stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is yet to be fully understood. Observationally mapping the variety of ejecta outcomes (ultra-relativistic, mildly-relativistic or non-relativistic) in SNe of Type Ic with broad lines (Ic-BL) can provide a key test to stellar explosion models. However, this requires large samples of the rare Ic-BL events with follow-up observations in the radio, where fast ejecta can be probed largely free of geometry and viewing angle effects. Here, we present the results of a radio (and X-ray) follow-up campaign of 16 SNe Ic-BL detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). Our radio campaign resulted in 4 counterpart detections and 12 deep upper limits. None of the events in our sample is as relativistic as SN 1998bw and we constrain the fraction of SN 1998bw-like explosions to $< 19%$ (3$sigma$ Gaussian equivalent), a factor of $approx 2$ smaller than previously established. We exclude relativistic ejecta with radio luminosity densities in between $approx 5times10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ and $approx 10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ at $tgtrsim 20$ d since explosion for $approx 60%$ of the events in our sample. This shows that SNe Ic-BL similar to the GRB-associated SN 1998bw, SN 2003lw, SN 2010dh, or to the relativistic SN 2009bb and iPTF17cw, are rare. Our results also exclude an association of the SNe Ic-BL in our sample with largely off-axis GRBs with energies $Egtrsim 10^{50}$ erg. The parameter space of SN2006aj-like events (faint and fast-peaking radio emission) is, on the other hand, left largely unconstrained and systematically exploring it represents a promising line of future research. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.09536v1
GW170817 4 5 years after merger: Dynamical ejecta afterglow constraints by Arvind Balasubramanian et al. on Wednesday 12 October GW170817 is the first binary neutron star (NS) merger detected in gravitational waves (GWs) and photons, and so far remains the only GW event of its class with a definitive electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. Radio emission from the structured jet associated with GW170817 has faded below the sensitivity achievable via deep radio observations with the most sensitive radio arrays currently in operation. Hence, we now have the opportunity to probe the radio re-brightening that some models predict, should emerge at late times from the interaction of the dynamically-stripped merger ejecta with the interstellar medium. Here we present the latest results from our deep radio observations of the GW170817 field with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), 4.5 years after the merger. Our new data at $3,$GHz do not show any compelling evidence for emission in excess to the tail of the jet afterglow ($
Lofting of low speed ejecta produced in the DART experiment and production of a dust cloud by Gonzalo Tancredi et al. on Wednesday 07 September NASA sent the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission to impact Dimorphos, the satellite of the asteroid binary system (65803) Didymos. DART will release LICIACube prior to impact to obtain high-resolution post-impact images. The impact will produce a crater and a large amount of material ejected at high speed (several tens of m/s), producing an ejecta cone that will quickly disperse. We analyzed an additional effect: the lofting of material at low velocity due to the generation of seismic waves that propagate inside Dimorphos, producing surface shaking far from the impact point. We divide the process into different stages: from the generation of impact-induced waves, the interaction of them with surface particles, the ejection of dust particles at velocities, and the prediction of the observability of the dust coma and trail. We anticipate the following observable effects: i) generation of a dust cloud that will produce a hazy appearance of Dimorphos' surface, detectable by LICIACube; ii) brightness increase of the binary system due to enhancement of the cross section produced by the dust cloud; iii) generation of a dust trail, similar to those observed in some Active Asteroids, which can last for several weeks after impact. Numerical prediction of the detectability of these effects depends on the amount and size distribution of ejected particles, which are largely unknown. In case these effects are observable, an inversion method can be applied to compute the amount of ejected material and its velocity distribution, and discuss the relevance of the shaking process. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02805v1

Sean, Greg, and Lynn cover a broad spectrum of topics in this one: They discuss the New Zealand horror comedy Housebound, the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, the Scream series on MTV, (of course, as the title of this episode suggests) Fear the Walking Dead, and finally Ejecta, an alien abduction film by Tony Burgess, writer of Pontypool (which is actually pictured in this episode because there aren't any interesting pictures of Fear the Walking Dead. On a related note: A Google image search for Ejecta will yield some pretty interesting results, though NSFW).

On today's show I talk to musician Leanne Macomber of Neon Indian and Ejecta. Growing up in football-loving Texas to parents who skewed more towards the athletic side of things, Leanne wanted to pursue art and music since she was a teenager. But she had to justify its practicality to her parents by being in things like the school jazz band. Since leaving the Lone Star State, she's been able to play music professionally and has toured all around the world in bands like Neon Indian and her duo Ejecta with Ford & Lopatin's Joel Ford. Ejecta's albumDominae was released last year, and it is fantastic.Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, and follow me on Twitter!
