Polly Lee discusses her contributions to art in the State and in Petersburg as well as her exhibit currently on display at the library- Stoneware Pots by Pauline Lee 1955-2005. This podcast includes a Listening Project recorded in 2010 titled Art in Such A Place when Polly Lee came in to talk with Susan Christensen about her life as an artist here in Petersburg. Polly describes the Civic Improvement Committee she joined to beautify the town back in the 1950s and the daunting mission they were first given by the City Council. Polly tells Susan how the Civic Improvement Committee became the Petersburg Arts and Crafts guild, and eventually the Arts Council. She describes her early life as an artist, teaching ceramics as a young mother, with a baby in her arms. Then she describes many of the local art projects she either designed or collaborated on including the “Fisk” fountain at the Clausen Museum, the concrete impressions in the sidewalks and the “Sea Song” which adorns the municipal building. She talks about fabricating “Sea Song” with Ronn Buschmann, who she describes as “The Nureyev of the Band Saw”. Polly has been an artist and champion of the arts and mentor for many people throughout her life in Petersburg. In this interview she talks about her philosophy of art and the importance of art in our lives and community.

"I see clearly that I'm not okay." These words--so clearly, vulnerably, and fearlessly articulated--break "Sea Song" wide open, beginning the chorus and delineating the moment of reckoning when we finally choose to acknowledge our problems and begin the arduous, rewarding process of healing.  In this episode, Emmeline sits down with Puerto Rican native Xavier Bernazard to talk about the dark place from which the song began, the healing found in its composition, and how Xavier's desire to grow into his own person and lean into his sadness brought the song to life. Emmeline and Xavier talk about transforming anxiety into an anthem. Xavier also shares his favorite Paramore songs, "Last Hope" and "26," and talks about the importance of a good cry by the ocean. To learn more about Xavier Bernazard, or to follow his musical journey, follow him on Instagram at @xavierbernazard. In the third episode of Ghost Echoes, the secret rules direct us towards a reluctant radical in Robert Wyatt. The eclectic English musician is in good company, though, and you'll find out why as we twist and turn through a number of historical similarities and coincidences. Along the way, we'll also learn that a revolution is not a dinner party. Music and Sound Notes: - The music in the first section about Robert Wyatt includes “Marchides” by Matching Mole, and “Alifib” by Robert Wyatt. - The following section about Cornelius Cardew includes the first movement from Haydn's String Quartet Op. 54, No. 1 performed by Marlburo Music. - “Brandy As In Benj” by Matching Mole starts the next section about Wyatt. Three more songs from Little Red Record close out the section: “Righteous Rhumba,” “Gloria Gloom,” and “Starting in the Middle of the Day We Can Drink Our Politics Away.” - The next Cardew section contains "Paragraph 7" of The Great Learning performed by the Scratch Orchestra, a repeat engagement by AMMMusic, and Karlheinz Stockhausen's Kontakte. The recordings of Cardew's propaganda songs appear on the CD Consciously: “Song for the British Working Class,” “Founding of the Party” and “The Workers of Ontario.” - The following sections contain “Foxy Lady” from a Jimi Hendrix bootleg from a 1967 show in Stockholm. And a recording of Cardew's Thälmann Variations by Frederic Rzewski. (This recording is all the more poignant considering that Rzewski was a friend of Cardew's, and a colleague in radical politics, though he did not escape censure by Cardew in Stockhausen Serves Imperialism). - Finally, the ending is set to two Robert Wyatt songs: “Sea Song” and “Shipbuilding.” Further reading, listening: - My two main sources for biographical information were Cornelius Cardew: A Life Unfinished by John Tilbury and Different Every Time: The Authorized Biography of Robert Wyatt by Marcus O'Dair. This piece by Edward Fox was useful for some details surrounding Cardew's death. -Clips of Wyatt speaking come from the BBC's The Voices Of… and the short clip of John Tilbury comes from this video.

Chapter 89: "The Audio Medium (Alpha)" ...as read by Daryl Rabidoux of Cancer Conspiracy and Radar Studio (Recorded on January 6th, 2017) In the early 2000s I heard an album that changed my life. A small band called Cancer Conspiracy put out a full-length on Big Wheel called "The Audio Medium" and it became one of my favorite albums. I had the pleasure to talk to Daryl Rabidoux who played guitar in Cancer Conspiracy. Daryl and I weave an epic-length story covering his entire timeline. I sliced it in half because it seemed that the first half focused most of its attention to Daryls' beginnings up through The Audio Medium. Enjoy and if you think you'd enjoy Fugazi and Faraquet playing King Crimson I highly recommend you hunt this album down. Special thanks to my son Ben for helping me figure out an ending to part one...stay tuned, and SUBSCRIBE. This week, our interview with the creator of the Beacause Project fell through, so we are revisiting a fan favorite. This time, we discuss Anima from Final Fantasy X. Anima is the inner self of an individual. Psychologist C.G. Jung, said it's the female side of the male psyche. The Latin meaning of Anima is soul, spirit, ghost; breath of life. We also delve into Bismark, a summon from Final Fantasy VI. Bismark is likely named after the Chancellor of Prussia in the late 1800's. This theory is largely based off of the espers Sea Song ability, which would refer to the Bismarck ship that was sunk in 1941. We move on to discuss the final summon, Crusader, or Jihad. Crusader is another Esper featured in Final Fantasy VI. His name was originally Jihad in Japan, but they censored the name for the North American release of the game, fearing that North American players would associate the name with an Islamic Jihad. Jihad doesn't inherently imply evil. It's usually a term used for the battle between good and evil. It can also be used to describe a holy war, which is most likely the purpose that Crusader serves in Final Fantasy VI. We also move on to talk about a few questions asked by forum users, and declare that the Final Fantasy XIV gift card is the prize. Thanks again for listening, and enjoy the grind!
