This week we have a whopping big episode for you: Part 2 of our look at Samuel Goldwyn Productions, dealing with the 1940s; and, in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, brief discussions of three Powell and Pressburgers, kicking off TIFF's May retrospective. For this episode we watched The Little Foxes (directed by William Wyler), The Pride of the Yankees (directed by Sam Wood), The Best Years of Our Lives (Wyler again), and My Foolish Heart (directed by Mark Robson). From scheming capitalists to heroic baseball stars to casting a critical eye on post-WWII America to a grown-up soap opera that defies the Production Code, we consider the legacy of the innovative independent producer who not only hired intellectuals but let them do their thing. A Change Is Gonna Come - Грядущие перемены включает в себя семь замечательных произведений пианиста Bill O'Connell, который прославился мастерством в области латиноамериканского джаза начав свою деятельность в 1977 году, как участник Mongo Santamaria Latin Jazz Band. Johnny Hates Jazz with Clark Datchler in conversation with David Eastaugh In April 1986, Datchler, Nocito and Hayes released the first Johnny Hates Jazz single, "Me and My Foolish Heart", on RAK Records.[9] It was not a commercial success, but gained substantial airplay and was Sounds magazine's record of the week.[citation needed] Datchler began writing new songs which included "Shattered Dreams". JHJ then performed a showcase at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, and were subsequently signed to Virgin Records. "Shattered Dreams" was released in March 1987 and became a top 5 hit in the UK, throughout mainland Europe and Asia, and reached No. 2 in Japan. It was followed by three other worldwide hits, "I Don't Want to Be a Hero", "Turn Back the Clock" (featuring Kim Wilde on backing vocals) and "Heart of Gold". In 1988, "Shattered Dreams" reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, No. 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart, and climbed to No. 4 in Canada. That same year, their album Turn Back the Clock entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, selling four million copies.
THE ORIGIN OF THIS MUSIC:Created by Gibbs Williams It is hard to believe it has been decades since I graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. It is even harder to believe that I received an invitation to attend the 65th reunion. Unfortunately, with the covid pandemic still in the air, although vaccinated, I thought it prudent better to pass up this event hoping conditions fare more salutary for the 70th. Although disappointed I would miss the reunion I was struck by a wave of pleasurable nostalgia. Recalling those the best of those glorious days I remember the feelings of the cool Miami Beach breezes enveloping us on our weekly Friday night dances in the patio of our high school. All who attended seemed hypnotized with feelings of a pervasive feeling of at-one-ment in which we collectively bathed in what was then and even now experienced as our own unique mixture of heroin- like- atmosphere. This natural high was experienced by many of us as nothing short of pure unadulterated nostalgia. Nostalgia then and now was like our living in a collective commune protecting us from what probably would have been experienced as overwhelming normal adolescent pain if we had been open to feeling it. I was especially nostalgic remembering my self and four other guys daring to form a small combo good enough to play at all of the school dances. We even played well enough that every New Years Eve a Miami Beach Hotel hired us to perform. Our Small combo consisted of Drums (Marvin Guccion), Bass (John Schaffer), Trombone (Peter Weill), Trumpet (Kenny Kupper) and Piano (Gibbs Williams). Unknowingly we had no knowledge that we were on the cutting edge of what would soon be an explosion of worldwide bands. In is in this memorable context that I wish to share an album of some of those unforgettable songs which best seem to celebrate the richness not only of those glorious days from the 9th to the 12th grade, but all the years that have too quickly passed - as well as the years that are yet to come. It is unfortunate that we never recorded our iconic sounds. The best I can offer with the goal in mind of capturing the sounds we made are my original arrangements made on my Yamaha synthesizer. The songs we played were standards from the forties and fifties. I have titled this compilation Nostalgia. "NOSTALGIA" - 65 th REUNION - MIAMI BEACH HIGH SCHOOL - CLASS of 55 Moon Over Miami , Ebb Tide, Star Dust, It Might As Well Be Spring, Teguilla, The Hucklebuck, Five Foot Two, Somewhere Along the Way, Im In The Mood For Love, Again, Blue Moon, Miami Beach Rhumba, Because of You, Rock Around the Clock, Down By The Riverside, Tammy's In Love, Where Is Your Heart, Don't Blame Me, If I Loved You, I'll Take Manhattan, The Man I Love, A Secret Love, Autumn Leaves, Summer Time, Mona LIsa, Take the A Train,Perfidia, It's No Sin, It Had To Be You, For Me And My Gal, Thrill Me, You're Just In Love, Yellow Bird, Canadian Sunset, A Taste Of Honey, Too Young, Saint Louis Blues, My Foolish Heart, You Belong To Me, Sleepy Time Gal, Body and Soul, The Nearness Of You, Misty, Sweet Georgia Brown, Blue Skies, Tenderly, Some Enchanted Evening, Bali High, Bewitched, Once Upon A Time, As Time Time Goes By, Aways, Fight Song Of The Miami Beach Hight Marching Band A and B. I know all was not perfect then as we were all struggling to survive adolescence so those days were hardly always serene. Yet, there was, and still is for me and I imagine for many of my class mates, a certain undeniable 'specialness' about our class which for many of us still acts like a permanent magnet pulling us back again and again to re-unite. As for me, if we had been recognized as ground-breaking I am certain our lives at least vocationally would have taken a much different route. However, I can honestly say that I am happy to being a still practicing psychoanalyst in New York City - a happily married husband and father having started our own dynasty of four grandchildren.

Our alternate version of My Foolish Heart with pianist Bruce Pedalty. We played in a band that worked nightly at the Red Baron in Minneapolis for many weeks (or was it months?). That was in the 1960's so how do you expect me to remember.

Gary welcomes director Jonathan Berry and actor Jessica Dean Turner from the new hit play Red Rex to the Booth today. Written by Ike Holter as the newest in his Rightlynd series of plays, Red Rex is is receiving a world premiere by Steep Theatre and is being presented in their 55-seat space at 1115 W. Berwyn through March 30. Gary called it "one of the most moving, thought-provoking and beautifully produced plays he's seen in many a season." The production is about members of a Chicago storefront theater company who are working on a new play being presented by a Chicago storefront theater company. Jonathan discusses the meta nature of directing this project at Steep, where he's been an ensemble member for many years, having directed there since 2007. Jon describes one of the themes of the play: "The theatre community can create its own center of focus, obscuring, entirely, the actual world just outside the door." Jonathan and Jessica talk about the play's other themes, including equity and inclusion, inadvertent and subtle acts of racism, shining a light on the pretentiousness of some creative processes, and the deep humor and humanity with which Ike Holter treats each of his characters. It's a discussion that will make you want to run, don't walk, to the see Red Rex at the Steep. Jessica talks about her theatre training in the very intensive program at the University of Illinois - Urbana, and how the rigorous nature of the program prepared her for the life of a working actor. As a non-Equity actor striving to make a career in the burgeoning off-Loop theatre scene, Jessica is frank in her assessment of the challenges and struggles that entails. The commutes are long, the pay is low, and the competition is steep(!) But Jonathan and Jessica both emphasize what most audiences already know - the Chicago style of acting exemplifies a fierceness and passion fueled by the daily grind that is the nature of a life in the theatre. Gary offers a play idea with the news story of 183 Amtrak passengers stranded for 37 hours in a snowstorm in the Oregon wilderness. Jonathan has been on plenty of delayed Amtrak trips and describes the mounting stress among the passengers as "a Lord of the Flies mentality." The dramatic possibilities are endless! Jessica also teaches at the Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts), training young performers. ChiArts is a public 4–year college preparatory visual and performing arts high school located in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Operated by the Chicago Public Schools district, the school opened for the 2009–10 school year. She's also worked as an actor-patient at Northwestern Medical School where she helped train doctors to treat a variety of conditions and symptoms. A great acting exercise. Kiss of Death: Ethel Ennis - Celebrated Singer Who Walked Away from Fame: Ms. Ennis was a highly respected jazz singer in the 1950s and 60s. Ella Fitzgerald stated that Ms. Ennis was her favorite young vocalist, and Frank Sinatra called her "my kind of singer". But Ethel grew disillusioned with the demands placed on young divas, and she eschewed national celebrity for a quieter life in her hometown of Baltimore, where she earned the unofficial title of Baltimore's "First Lady of Jazz." Ethel Ennis was 86. Read the full NYTimes obit here. Check out her beautiful rendition of My Foolish Heart on YouTube.

I’m grateful that I forgot the iPod at home and had to stick entirely to vinyl. It happens that I’d carried in a few more albums than usual that night, and played from almost all of them. Forgive me that some of the tracks are pretty scratchy. I’ve had some of these albums for decades, and the scratches are almost like the scratches on me – markers of a passage through life, time and perspective, and all that they’ve encompassed. The scratchiest of these tunes, the first and last, the Ramsey Lewis and the Stevie Wonder, are from probably the first twenty or so albums I ever bought, years before I started taking care of them. I also think that these are among the best tunes in the set. Ramsey Lewis has never gotten his due, so far as I’m concerned. He’s a masterful pianist, with a style that can be funky, churchy and bluesy. And the composition, “Les Fleur” or “The Flowers” by another over-looked artist, Charles Stepney, casts a hauntingly beautiful mood. “Music of My Mind” was an extraordinary offering from Stevie Wonder, following closely on the heels of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” – two early 70’s albums that broke new ground as expressions of individual, musical visions. Not only did Wonder write and produce the entire album. He also – with the exception of two solos – plays all of the instruments. Other Set standouts include McLaughlin’s take on “My Foolish Heart” and the magnificent “For Tomorrow” from McCoy Tyner. Then, there’s Dionne Warwick with the lush and orchestral Bacharach/David tune “Check Out Time”. And if I were to pick out five more favorites, they’d be just great as these five! Thrive! Paul Whiteman with the Swan Quartet singing, Gay Ranchero, opens the show. Gracie is in the kitchen, talking to Martha the cook. Their conversation is interupted by a phone call for Gracie. She talks to Bessy about George, and Christmas gifts. Next, she has to deal with Herman the Duck about eating his veggies, and growing big muscles. Bill Goodwin and Jimmy Cash stop in on their way to mail some Christmas packags. Herman is still poking around his lunch, and gets sent to his room. When George comes in, Gracie tells him about the new maid, and has the same trouble as Herman when it comes to eating lunch. Jimmy Cash sings, My Foolish Heart and I. George and Gracie stand in line at the Post Office to mail some Christmas packages. Hey, maybe another line might move faster? George keeps moving to the back of the line as Gracie finds the supervisor. In her quest, Gracie puts in a plug to buy War bonds. As Gracie and Bill try to help, George keeps finding himself at the back of the lines. Paul Whiteman plays a nice dance tune. After the big adventure, George and Gracie are back home. Gracie would give his muscles a rub down, if she could find them. They get visited by a couple of odd neighbors, and George finds out why those Christmas packages were so heavy. Bonus Tracks: Joe Cohen. March of Santa Claus. Jimmy Durante. Frosty the Snowman

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the experimental composer Gavin Bryars. One of his best-known works, The Sinking of the Titanic, pays tribute to the band which continued to play as the ship went down. It poses the question what if they hadn't stop playing; how would their music have sounded under water? His most popular composition, Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, features a tramp singing the same verse again and again, building up layer upon layer of emotion. Composing is a craft he learnt as an assistant to John Cage, after hearing his work Four minutes, thirty-three seconds - of silence. Today he is both established and establishment - the ENO are soon to stage his latest opera and if you look closely at the orchestra, you'll spot him on the bass![Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: My Foolish Heart by Bill Evans Trio Book: Science and Civilisation in China by Joseph Needham Luxury: Gravity chair
