As we publish this episode in 2024, it has been 30 YEARS since 1994. THIRTY. YEARS. How did that happen? That said, 1994 was a great year for music. In the days right before the inventions of Napster and the iPod, radio, MTV, VH1, record stores, and CD clubs still had an iron grip on what most Americans listened to. It was a diverse mix of genres and artists, with dance hits, grunge bands, rap, r'n'b, alternative rock, adult-contemporary ballads, and even some folk-pop indie darlings piercing through the noise and topping the charts. Now, continuing our series of looking back at songs from 20, 30, and 40 years ago, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine: what WAS the best song of 1994? Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Gary Jackson, Joelle Boedecker, and Kate Racculia they discuss 16 of the most iconic songs from 1994, narrowing them down until they make their final decision! The superhero movie “The Crow,” released in 1994, will forever be known for two events. First, the tragic death of lead actor Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, during production of the film would cast a pall over the movie from then on. Second, the outstanding music of The Crow: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack would result in a chart-topping album. This soundtrack is a veritable who's who of alternative rock at the time, including artists like The Cure, Violent Femmes, Nine Inch Nails, and Stone Temple Pilots. The Crow is based on a comic book series of the same name, written in 1989. The protagonist is brutally killed by a gang along with his fiancée, and is brought back to life by a crow to wreak vengeance on the murderers. This soundtrack would hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts in 1994.Friend of the show John Lynch leads the commentary on this album.Burn by The CureThe Cure was an inspiration for James O'Barr, the creator of the comic series, and lead man Robert Smith wrote this song specifically for the film. Burn leads off the album. Golgotha Tenement Blues by Machines of Loving GraceThis song was also written specifically for the film. The name of the song takes Christian imagery and reflects it on the dark mood set by the movie. Golgotha was the place where Jesus was crucified, and Tenement reflects the ghetto where the protagonist originated. The song appears only on the soundtrack, not on any MOLG album.Color Me Once by Violent FemmesThis track would significantly enhance the popularity of the Violent Femmes. The song depicts disappointment in relationships when hard realities dash hopes. Slip Slide Melting by For Love Not LisaA rocking track from an underrated group. KISS alum Ace Frehley wrote songs and made guest appearances with For Love Not Lisa. Slip Slide Melting appears on their first album entitled “Melting,” which was released in 1993. They would release one other album before disbanding in 1996. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from NFL on FOX Newcomer network FOX debuts its first NFL game in August of 1994. STAFF PICKS:New Age Girl by Deadeye DickWayne leads off the staff picks with a song from the soundtrack of “Dumb and Dumber.” The song describes Mary Moon, a new age vegetarian. It generated some controversy with its lyrics, “she don't eat meat, but she sure likes the bone.” Some radio stations would edit out the word "bone." Breathe by Collective Soul Rob features a song off Collective Soul's 1993 album “Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid.” Hailing from Stockbridge, Georgia, Collective Soul would have a number of hits beginning in the 1990s, particularly “Shine” and “The World I Know.”Come to My Window by Melissa EtheridgeBrian brings us the second single from Etheridge's breakout fourth album “Yes I Am.” The song remained in the Billboard Hot 100 for 44 weeks. Etheridge would win a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.Don't Turn Around by Ace of BaseJohn Lynch closes out the staff picks with Swedish reggae group Ace of Base, performing a remastered song originally performed by Tina Turner in 1986. Ace of Base would take their version to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “The Little Rascals”A movie version of the of the old Our Gang comedy short films from 1922 was released in this month.
Megg Farrell, was born and bred in New York City but her sound reaches far beyond the confines of Manhattan. Her voice is exceptional and is colored with a variety of influences she holds dear including Billie Holiday, Anita O'day, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, and Bessie Smith. Her music is American to the core in that it is ever evolving and reflecting the changes surrounding it. When Sweet Megg formed they were strictly an old-time jazz band from the burgeoning traditional scene in New York. Megg was in love with the blues and early jazz and was performing regularly around town and at swing dances around the country. After moving to Nashville she has released throwback old-style traditional swing country music on her newest record, 'Christine's Daughter'. “Young people today have such a tough time, on every level. If people have a roof over their head, everything shifts for them.” Lorraine Thomas is a risk-taking, changemaking, life-enhancing visionary. She took a leap from a successful career in business development for the legal sector to property development, where one of her key focuses is helping young disadvantaged adults get on the ladder. Over half of the investment property that Lorraine renovates through her company, View from My Window, has a social element attached to it and part of her business focuses on encouraging a new breed of landlord with a social conscious. “When my parents first came to this country, when they knocked on that door and there were those signs saying, 'No dogs, no Irish, no blacks', somebody took a chance on them and said ‘okay you can rent a room with me'. I want to be that person today. We are taking a chance on people who other landlords wouldn't,” she explains.Lorraine has been nominated for dozens of awards and was recently presented with the Lancelot Andrewes Award for a podcast she created for her local community in Southwark, to help bring them together, virtually, during lockdown. We also talk about: Diversity of thought and point of difference that comes from having a diverse workforce. Property with purpose that puts people first. How to learn, earn and own your own property. How Lorraine's life experiences have helped shape her attitude to money and feeling financially secure. If you're interested in being part of Lorraine's network of socially conscious landlords, contact her via LinkedIn. Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Lisa Cannistraci, the owner of Henrietta Hudson, the longest running lesbian bar in the country, (@henriettahudson), to chat about her experience running the bar. From taking Madonna on a tour of all of the lesbian bars in NYC, to Melissa Etheridge taking over the stage when the band started playing "Come to My Window", Lisa has seen it all. She talked to us about embracing the full spectrum of the LGBTQ community when she realized that she needed to adapt and make it a lesbian centric bar for the entire LGBTQ community. She also discussed her activism and how she's never shied away from taking a stand even if it means losing business. Adam Rosenbalm and Austin Ramsey study at East Tennessee State University (ETSU.) After the 2016 election it seemed the country was more polarized than ever. Conversations quickly became debates that led to arguments. Both Adam and Austin wanted to do something about the partisan divide between Conservative and Liberal Americans. Fortunately they learned about a new group called Better Angels. After attending a Better Angels’ event, Adam and Austin decided to bring the Better Angels’ style of debate to the ETSU campus. They hosted the first-ever Better Angel’s debate on a college campus. They chose a hot button topic that drew a large audience: guns on campus. Throughout the debate students were given space to share their feelings about the topic and raise questions. What often becomes a heated debate where people walk away angry and further divided instead became a space of deeper understanding and friendship. Because of skillful facilitation and clear guardrails that kept the conversation moving forward, the ETSU Better Angels gun debate was a huge success. After that initial success, Adam and Austin organized debates on other topics. They share with Citizens Climate Radio host, Peterson Toscano, some of the insights they have learned that help them to foster civil discourse that results in genuine understanding and appreciation of people on the other side of an issue. They also talk about climate change and the challenges that must be overcome when organizing an effective dialogue between Conservatives and Liberals. The Art House Being a climate advocate can be very difficult. How do you maintain hope in the face of bad news and apathy from those around you? Where do you find encouragement and inspiration? What role can faith play in our climate work? These are the questions Rev. Dr. Leah D. Schade and Rev. Dr. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas the editors of a new anthology of essays by climate change faith leaders, wanted to answer. They bring together 21 climate leaders in the book, Rooted & Rising: Voices of Courage in a Time of Climate Crisis. Contributors include Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, Rev Fred Small, Cristina Leaño, and Rabbi Shoshana Meira Friedman. In the Art House the editors speak briefly about the book, and then contributors, Dr. Nathasha DeJarnett, a research coordinator at the National Environmental Health Assocation reads a portion of her essay, “The View from My Window. Corina Newsome, from Young Evangelicals for Climate Action shares how her hope was rekindled through the process of writing her piece, “The Thing with Feathers.” Once she received her copy of the book and read the other essays, she found even more hope. Adam Rosenbalm and Austin Ramsey study at East Tennessee State University (ETSU.) Both raised in Conservative families in the South, they arrived on campus at a time when American citizens were more politically polarized than ever. After the 2016 election it seemed the country was more polarized than ever. Conversations quickly became debates that led to arguments. Both Adam and Austin wanted to do something about the partisan divide between Conservative and Liberal Americans. Fortunately they learned about a new group called Better Angels. According to the Better Angels’ website, "Better Angels is a national citizens’ movement to reduce political polarization in the United States by bringing liberals and conservatives together to understand each other beyond stereotypes, forming red/blue community alliances, teaching practical skills for communicating across political differences, and making a strong public argument for depolarization.” They do this through their Red and Blue Workshops. With the help of a skilled facilitator, Better Angels hosts parliamentary styles debates. After attending a Better Angels’ event, Adam and Austin decided to bring the Better Angels’ style of debate to the ETSU campus. They hosted the first-ever Better Angel’s debate on a college campus. They chose a hot button topic that drew a large audience. Adam explains, “East Tennessee State University is in rural Tennessee…and firearms are a part of most people’s lives, and so we set forth the resolution that said, ‘Resolved: Students should be allowed to carry guns on campus.’ The whole premise of the event after that was people were asked to either speak in the affirmative or the negative on the topic.” Throughout the debate students were given space to share their feelings about the topic and raise questions. What often becomes a heated debate where people walk away angry and further divided instead became a space of deeper understanding and friendship. Because of skillful facilitation and clear guardrails that kept the conversation moving forward, the ETSU Better Angels gun debate was a huge success. Austin says, “It really won over the campus. Students really connected with the style. We had students on both side of the issues that at the end worked together to say, hey, we need to meet to talk about this issue. We need to work together, because now we see this issue is deeper than a gun…it’s about how we’ve been raised, how we perceive this issue, where we were born, and how some of the milestones in our lives affect how we think about this. And that’s important when we talk about these difficult issues.”After that initial success, Adam and Austin organized debates on other topics. Contributors include Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, Rev Fred Small, Cristina Leaño, and Rabbi Shoshana Meira Friedman. In his introduction to the book, Bill McKibben argues for the need for a faith-based book about climate action, “…love, I would suggest, is what finally roots this volume: a love for the world around us, in all its improbable glory, and for the people who alone can bear witness to that glory and rise to its defense. If they are indeed summoned to that calling, it may be in part by fear—by the proper functioning of the survival instinct. But I suspect it will be more by love, the ever-great mystery. This volume opens some windows on that mystery, because the people whose words are collected in it have been powered by that force.”In the Art House the editors speak briefly about the book, and then contributors, Dr. Nathasha DeJarnett, a research coordinator at the National Environmental Health Assocation reads a portion of her essay, “The View from My Window. Melissa Etheridge is one of rock music's great female icons. Her critically acclaimed eponymous debut album was certified double platinum. Etheridge's popularity built around such memorable songs as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain't It Heavy” for which she won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am, featuring the massive hits “I'm the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought her a second Grammy. The six times platinum album spent more than two and a half years on the album chart. Etheridge is also an Oscar winner for Best Original Song in 2007. In 2011 Melissa made her Broadway debut as St. Jimmy in Green Day's rock opera, American Idiot, where she replaced Billie Joe Armstrong for one week, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Etheridge is scheduled to release MEmphis Rock and Soul, a new album honoring Stax Records, in fall of 2016. She recently completed recording at Royal Studios in Memphis on what will be her first album since 2014's critically lauded This Is M.E. On June 20, 2016, Etheridge released a song called “Pulse.” The singer wrote the song in reaction to the mass shootings that took place in Orlando on June 12, 2016. As she told Rolling Stone, “We want to try to make sense. We want to try to heal. We want to bring some meaning, some purpose. We also want to put it down forever in history. That's how I'm coping.” All proceeds from the sale of “Pulse” will benefit Equality Florida, the states largest LGBT civil rights organization. She chats with Slacker about life and her new release, Memphis Rock And Soul! #slackermorningshow101theFox

JOHN JACOB NILES is considered one of our nation's most influential musicians. This Kentucky native is called the "Dean of American Balladeers" and Niles's dedication to the folk music tradition lives on in generations of folk revival artists such as Bob Dylan, Jean Ritchie, Joan Baez, and Oscar Brand. At the age of sixteen Niles wrote one of his most enduring tunes, "Go 'Way from My Window," basing it on a song fragment from a black farm worker. This iconic song has been performed by folk artists ever since and may even have inspired the opening line of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe." As a composer and balladeer, Niles drew inspiration from the deep well of traditional Appalachian and African American folk songs. The show will feature Dr. RON PEN, associate professor of music and director of the John Jacob Niles Center for American Music and the Appalachian Studies Program, who just published the first full-length biography of Niles called I Wonder as I Wander: The Life of John Jacob Niles. Other artists performing on the show include: The Reel World String Band, The Niles String Quartet, Carla Gover, Dennis Bender & vocalist Monica Dewey.
