On the Schmooze Podcast: Leadership | Strategic Networking | Relationship Building
You wrote the book. You poured your expertise, your stories, and your strategy into every chapter. Now it's published—and while that's a huge accomplishment, it's not the end of the journey. It's the beginning of your book's real impact. Because a book on its own doesn't build a business. That comes from how you share it, how you talk about it, and how you use it to spark conversations with the right people—readers who can become clients, collaborators, and champions of your work. That's the work I do as a book launch strategist. I help entrepreneurs design book launches that aren't about going viral—they're about building visibility, credibility, and connections. We focus on the right systems: launch teams, virtual events, personalized outreach, and strategic content—all built to make your book work for your business. If you're ready to treat your book as a serious asset, not just a finished project, let's talk. Schedule a complimentary 30-minute book launch brainstorming session at www.BookLaunchBrainstorm.com. And now, let me introduce today's panelists: Tissa Richards wrote “Rethinking Resilience: Fueling Your Competitive Advantage,” a bold and practical guide that reframes resilience as a leadership asset—empowering executives and entrepreneurs to lead with clarity, confidence, and impact in high-stakes environments. Laurie Seymour wrote “Unconditional Remembrance: Your Connection to Source,” a reflective and deeply spiritual book that helps readers access their inner wisdom and reconnect with their true essence, inviting a more grounded, purpose-driven way of living and leading. Susan Schramm wrote “Fast Track Your Big Idea! Navigate Risk, Move People to Action, and Avoid Your Strategy Going Off Course,” a results-oriented playbook for mission-driven leaders ready to turn bold ideas into real outcomes—without getting derailed by uncertainty, resistance, or overwhelm. Please join me in welcoming Laurie, Susan, and Tissa. In this episode, we discuss the following:

Ethical climate storytelling asks a hard question that most climate conversations avoid: why do so many people shut down when the science is clear and the stakes are high, and how do we tell stories that actually move people to care and act. In this episode, we explore how ethical climate storytelling can reconnect audiences to climate issues without fear, guilt, or manipulation, and why this approach matters for protecting the ocean and the communities that depend on it. Climate communication strategy often defaults to urgency and catastrophe, but our guest explains why that approach can backfire. Drawing on real-world media campaigns and public engagement work, Maya Lilly of The Years Project breaks down how human-centered narratives help people see themselves inside the climate story, especially when it comes to ocean warming, sea level rise, and coastal impacts. Hope-based climate communication emerges as one of the most emotional and surprising insights of the episode. Maya shares how ethical storytelling is not about sugarcoating reality, but about restoring agency. Listeners will hear why people are more likely to protect the ocean when they feel respected, informed, and capable, rather than overwhelmed or blamed. Most leaders think people say yes because of a great pitch, the perfect message, or the right closing script. But that's not why people move. In this episode, I'll reveal the real reason people say yes through a powerful concept we created called The Belief Bridge™. You'll learn the three stages every person must cross before they join your team, buy from you, or decide to trust your leadership again: 1. Belief in YOU 2. Belief in your solution 3. Belief in themselves And you'll discover the silent force that's been collapsing that bridge without you realizing it: your leadership mask, the fear-led identity running your conversations, your content, and your confidence behind the scenes. This episode will shift the way you see leadership, influence, and sponsoring forever. If you've been wondering why people don't respond, why conversations stall, or why you feel stuck… this is the episode that finally makes everything make sense. Listen to Learn: 7:48 - The key reasons why leadership is influence, and how you are always transferring either belief or fear in every interaction, even through silence or hesitation. 13:07 - A closer look at The Belief Bridge™, or the engine of every sale and enrollment in your business 17:27 - The impact that leading with promotions and products is having on your business and why this is approach is backward thinking 27:18 - The concept of the "Leadership Mask", or the invisible, fear-led identity that silently and automatically breaks connection and destroys trust 31:11 - Some of the ways in which the "Teacher Mask" is helpful but ultimately hollow 34:12 - How the "Performer Mask" presents a polished highlight reel where everything looks perfect, but people know it's not real and will never trust the leadership 36:52 - Why leaders with the "Pusher Mask" rely on urgency and intense promotion, which also falls short 39:15 - The specific mask that causes leaders to hold back and eventually stop trying to sponsor, convincing themselves it's safer to not try than to risk failure 42:57 - What taking off these masks and shifting to a LOVE-LED™ identity will allow you to do Click here to subscribe to our LOVE-LED™ Weekly emails! Discover the science of persuasive messaging with communications expert Anat Shenker-Osorio in this compelling archive episode from Benn Marine's former podcast, Ocean of Organizing. While the Campfire team dives into 2026 planning, this conversation from 2019 remains strikingly relevant for anyone crafting messages that move people to action.Anat, whose research has appeared in The Atlantic, Boston Globe, and The Guardian, shares game-changing insights about how progressive campaigns can craft winning messages. She breaks down the fundamental flaws in typical progressive communication—what she calls the "Boy, have I got a problem for you?" approach—and offers a powerful alternative framework that starts with shared values rather than problems.Beyond specific messaging tactics, this episode explores the deeper philosophy of movement building. Anat emphasizes that effective campaigns focus on what they're for rather than what they oppose, noting that "what we fight, we feed." She shares examples from successful campaigns around the world—from New Zealand's election of Jacinda Ardern to Minnesota's defeat of Islamophobia—showcasing how positive, values-based messaging transforms outcomes.Whether you're planning a campaign, crafting organizational messaging, or simply curious about how language shapes our political landscape, this conversation offers invaluable tools for communicating with impact. Listen for practical frameworks you can immediately apply to your own work, and discover why creating hope through positive messaging remains essential even in challenging times.ASO Communications – This is Anat's website and where you can learn more about her and her research. In this debrief episode, hosts Julienne Ryan and Jerome Deroy reflect on their compelling conversation with Dr. Neal Baer—renowned TV producer, medical doctor, and storytelling educator—focusing on one powerful idea: “Data. Emotion. Action.”Using this quote as a springboard, they explore how storytelling transforms dry statistics into narratives that resonate—and ultimately drive change. From justice reform to on-the-ground fundraising, they share personal stories where this triad has shown up in powerful ways. You'll Hear:Storytelling with Purpose – How the “Data. Emotion. Action.” framework helps tailor stories to specific audiences, from policymakers to healthcare providers. The Power of Voice in the Justice System – How Measures for Justice turns numbers into stories that humanize criminal justice reform—and catalyze systemic change.A Cocktail-Hour Pivot – Why a last-minute decision to share a story at a fundraiser turned a routine speech into a moment of connection and transformation. From ER to Harvard – How Dr. Baer's eclectic journey from medicine to TV to academia exemplifies the power of building with a “Yes, and” mindset. Why Lived Experience Matters – A reminder that your personal story, when shared with intention, can make a tangible difference in how others see the world.Key Takeaways:✅ Data Alone Isn't Enough – Real change happens when stories infuse data with meaning and human connection.✅ Audience Clarity is Key – A story that moves a policymaker may differ from one that moves a patient or donor—know who you're talking to.✅ Build With “Yes, And” – Embrace non-linear journeys. Seemingly unrelated experiences often fuel the most powerful leadership stories.✅ Tell the Story—Even When Advised Not To – Sometimes the most impactful moments come when we trust our instincts and share something real.✅ Stories Spark Action – When stories are rooted in data and delivered with emotion, they don't just inform—they inspire and mobilize.

Consider the implications of undertaking a 10-year strategic plan during a global pandemic. The Greater Washington Community Foundation did just that, bringing its intentionally diverse constituency of civic, business, nonprofit and community leaders together to inform the process and vision. In the Washington DC region, the pandemic exposed the thin economic margins, structural racism, and lack of access to resources that Black and other communities of color have grappled with in and around our nation's capital for generations. As Tonia Wellons, President, and CEO of Greater Washington Community Foundation explains on this episode of Power Station, the moment created an opportunity to engage its unique cohort in building on the Foundation's core competencies, identifying barriers to economic justice, investing in groundbreaking solutions, and aligning itself with change making, high impact nonprofits. Tonia breaks down how closing the racial wealth gap is embedded in every issue the Foundation tackles and in its robust investments in targeted guaranteed income initiatives and a brand new school-based Children's Savings Account. Tonia Wellons see its convenings as the Foundation's superpower, the space where communities have a voice, business leaders become allies and impact is an achievable goal.

Today is the 3rd installment in my return to podcasting with my new podcast UNCENSORED and we are covering a super fun topic- shortening the time it takes a client to go from free-content consumer or someone just in your audience to becoming a paid client. Here are the key takeaways from today's episode:1️⃣ Shorten your sales cycle by making frequent and clear offers to your audience. Remember, you're not just making an offer, you're extending an invitation for them to work with you.2️⃣ Host a high-value event, such as a webinar or master class, to connect with your audience on a deeper level. This helps build trust and positions you as an authority in your niche.3️⃣ Don't underestimate the power of real connection. Live video or in-person events allow your audience to truly get to know you and your expertise, leading to stronger relationships and conversions.Mentioned in the episode: Don't forget to register for my MARKETING REINVENTION Free Workshop Series!REGISTER FOR THE MARKETING REINVENTION 5 DAY WORKSHOP SERIES:Register here.Join my free facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/simplesustainablescaling
