I have been a fan of Margo Price for years now. Her first album "Midwest Farmer's Daughter" was an incredible country album. On top of being a noteworthy songwriter, she lends her voice to causes she supports without flinching. Over the years she's toured with and become friends with legendary artists like Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson and she is making music in the spirit of those two artists. Today we take a look at her new single "Don't Let The Bastards Get You Down." I hope you dig it!

We really geeked out over music and had such a great time talking with Mark about his move back to Port Angeles, Washington, dealing with the breakup of his band, and his new album “Company Man.”    Mark Fredson's musical journey spans more than two decades, marked by a dogged commitment to the pursuit of making music for music's sake. Hailing from Port Angeles, Washington, Fredson was just a sophomore in high school - when he signed his first record deal. As a frontman, songwriter, pianist, and producer, his body of work is vast, from the outlaw country of Margo Price's "Hurtin' (On the Bottle)," which he co-wrote with Price, to the theatrical pop anthems that have defined his solo career. But it's his latest album, Company Man, arriving in the Spring of 2025, that marks a a new chapter in Fredson's artistic evolution. The album explores the tension between chaotic beauty of youth and the mundane realities of growing older, all while refusing to let go of a life in service to music, even if it's sometimes more labor than love.Fredson's high-octane days as the frontman of the Nashville-by-way-of-Port Angeles band The Lonely H had their fair share of musical highlights, but it wasn't until he went solo that Fredson's true musical identity was solidified. After releasing his debut solo album, Going to the Movies, in 2020, Fredson followed up with two debauchery-fueled full-length efforts,2021's Nothing But Night and 2023's Outskirts. Now, with Company Man, he dives deeper into the internal l conflicts brought on by the pesky hands of time and the realities of makingends meet. Across its 10 lean tracks, Fredson reckons with the challenges of making art while spending over a decade working in the restaurant industry. Was it worth it? The album continues to pose this stubborn question, even if the answer remains elusive.   Be sure to check Mark out here:  BandCamp: Mark Fredson  IG: Markofthefeast

We're going a little bit country again this week on the Talkhouse Podcast—gotta keep you on your toes—with a pair of Nashville singer-songwriters who share a sensibility, some history, and sobriety, as you'll hear. One of them, Margo Price, you've hopefully heard on the podcast before; the other, Lilly Hiatt, is a first-timer, but you'd never know it. Price was a critical darling right out of the gate, and for good reason: Her debut album, released by Jack White's Third Man Records, kicked some new life into country by looking both backward and forward. Since then, Price has released a series of great records as well as a phenomenal memoir called Maybe We'll Make It. Last time she was on this podcast, Price was talking to former Tom Petty sideman Mike Campbell about a collaboration they did. That's just the tip of the iceberg, and as you'll hear in this chat, she's got new music cooking, though nothing has been officially announced yet. Lilly Hiatt has a famous last name in the music world—her dad is John Hiatt—but she's cut her own path through Nashville, too. She rides a more adventurous side of the musical line, getting almost alt-rocky at some points. She's opened for everyone from Drive-By Truckers to Hiss Golden Messenger to the Mountain Goats, which should tell you something right there. This week Hiatt is releasing a new album called Forever, which is the result of some serious self-reflection and a different, entirely scrapped set of songs. The album was mixed by Paul Kolderie, known for working on early Radiohead and Pixies records. Maybe that'll also tell you something. Check out “Kwik-E-Mart” right here. In this lively conversation, Price and Hiatt talk about getting back into the game, about working with their musician husbands—Jeremy Ivey and Coley Hinson, respectively—and they talk at length about getting and staying sober in a town where that's not always so easy. I had never heard Nashville described as a “drinking town with a music problem” before. Enjoy. Chapters: 0:00 – Intro 2:13 – Start of the chat 3:34 – Trying to stay in good health 9:36 – Finding balance in your work life 11:20 – Being married to a musician 16:06 – A day in the life 21:26 – On Lilly Hiatt's new album, 'Forever' 23:36 – On Nashville 26:36 – Favorite songs on 'Forever' 30:40 – On Price's upcoming record 33:05 – On sobriety 43:50 – Everything else on the horizon Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Lilly Hiatt and Margo Price for chatting. On this long-anticipated episode, I got to sit down with singer/songwriter Sam Burton to talk about the role that practices like Tarot and Jungian dream work have played in his personal growth and resulting creative endeavors/artistic career. We also discussed the evolution of his method of reading Tarot for others, and the delicate ethical considerations of this vulnerable but powerful work.Sam's song featured in the episode is “I Can Go With You”Follow Sam's work and various projects here and here!Psyche Magic Website, Socials and more!More on Sam Burton: Born and raised outside of Salt Lake City, Sam Burton moved to LA to pursue music. In the last year he toured with Loving and Jose Gonzalez. He recently wrapped up a three-week residency at Los Angeles' Club TeeGee, and will head out on the road with Weyes Blood and Indigo Sparke in the coming months. To coincide with the news of his signing to Partisan Records, Burton has released the new song “Maria.”“Maria” was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon Studio with some of the best studio players in LA, and perfectly showcases Burton's knack for mining pure Laurel Canyon AM gold. Pastoral string arrangements bloom in the background of Sam's striking honeyed vocals-like a modern-day Campbell, Orbison, or Nilsson.Together, Wilson and Burton achieve a sound that doesn't descend into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, the music finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his acclaimed 2020 debut I Can Go With You, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity. The Psyche Magic Salon is a reader-supported publication. It's an election day bonus episode! Today we're gonna be digging way back in the archive to episode 4: Focusing on Margo Guryan. This was recorded in early 2019, when I was still figuring out this show's format.  At that time, it consisted of panelists with a shared interest (Andrew Dorsett and Michael Sean Coleman) nerding out about a favorite artist, and sometimes we'd get the chance to talk to the artist or somebody who was close to them. Margo Guryan passed away three years ago, and at the time of recording she did not agree to an interview, but she and I had some email correspondence that was helpful in researching her, and she put me in touch with her publisher, Jonathan Rosner, who also happens to be her stepson, who joined us about halfway through the show. I've re-edited that admittedly rough episode to make it more digestible, and at the top of the show I spoke with Jonathan again about the latest renaissance of Margo's music- two new reissues, plus a tribute album called “Like Someone I Know" which features Pearl And The Oysters, TOPS, Margo Price, Clairo and many others, available from Sub Pop and Urban Outfitters. Low Profile is supported by you on Patreon.com/lowprofile where you can sign up for flexible monthly donations that afford me the time it takes to research, record and edit this program. If you enjoy this show and can afford to contribute anything at all, it would be extremely helpful. It adds up in a big way. Believe me, I know things are tight, so if you can't chip in financially, please tell somebody you know about a favorite episode of Low Profile and share it on the internet. Listen in as Tales From The Green Room corrals three star power artists from the 2024 Mill Valley Music Festival! Margo Price joins the green room conversation after her festival performance and moments before her late night exclusive show at Sweetwater Music Hall later that evening - musing on demystifying psilocybin, her journey to “California Sober” status, touring with her husband of 20-years, and her penchant for speaking out on important issues. Dobbrow guitar-player-extraordinaire, Anders Beck of Greensky Bluegrass, follows with what turns out to be a “cosmic” discussion with host Dennis Strazulo about Anders' all-time favorite Grateful Dead show which coincidentally was Dennis' first, then reflecting  on the thrill of playing with his heroes and sharing some memorable stories experienced along the way. Eric Johnson of Fruit Bats closes out chatting about his Marin County music connection, the resurgence of his band, their expanding audience, and the inspiration behind his music.CreditsCalifornia Sober (feat. 8/14/24 - Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com welcomes back Jennifer Fahy, Communications Director with Farm Aid, to discuss the annual event and ongoing efforts to assist family farmers in our beautiful country. Farm Aid was started in 1985 by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp during the height of the farm crisis in an effort to bring people together and raise awareness for farmers and remind us all we're not alone in the struggles and why it's important to continue to be connected with each other. In 2001, Dave Matthews came on board and then, recently, Margo Price joined, too. Since 1985, Farm Aid has answered 1-800-FARM-AID to provide immediate and  effective support services to farm families in crisis. Now Farm Aid's online Farmer  Resource Network connects farmers to an extensive network of organizations across  the country that help farmers find the resources they need to access new markets,  transition to more sustainable and profitable farming practices, and survive natural disasters. Tickets for this year's Farm Aid, set for September 21 in NY, can be bought at LiveNation.com with prices ranging from $85-$325.
