On this week's show, we catch up on new singles from Sugar, Courtney Barnett and Margo Price, give it up for our good personal friends The Whiskey Charmers and Boygirl Rising, and give you all a break with a much shorter episode than usual. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

The Three Questions with Andy Richter

Margo Price and Andy Richter love country music… but not modern pop country. The country singer-songwriter and author joins Andy to discuss the current state of country music, getting signed by Jack White, how a girl from Illinois found herself in Nashville, her short-lived alter ego as Sylvia Slim, and much more. Her new album, "Hard Headed Woman,” is out now. Do you want to talk to Andy live on SiriusXM's Conan O'Brien Radio? Tell us your favorite dinner party story (about anything!) - leave a voicemail at 855-266-2604 or fill out our Google Form at BIT.LY/CALLANDYRICHTER. In which The Curmudgeons wrap up their five-part lookback at the British rock of the 1990s. It was a decade that started with the demised of dance-rock and shoegazer scenes but then saw an absolute cultural revolution explode in their wake via Britpop. By the end of the decade, though, things were dying down a bit and bubblegum pop acts like Robbie Williams and The Spice Girls. Yet there was quite a lot of good Britpop-influenced rock emerging from the U.K. streets in 1998 and 1999. Bands like Belle and Sebastian and The Beta Band scored critical-carling status if not overwhelming commercial success. Bands like Coldplay and Muse, both of whom would dominate the next British decade, made their debut. And Britpop stalwarts Pulp and Blur were still hanging on and producing some grand tunes. We cover it with aplomb during this episode.   Enjoy the British rock of 1998 and 1999 by accessing our special Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5XoRoHiH80oOfYQv9lFdk0?si=c579654c1eb4487f   Here's a handy navigation companion to this episode.    (00:52- 04:08) - Arturo Andrade sets the parameters for our discussion of British rock in the late 1990s   (04:25 - 15:54) - The Parallel Universe, featuring reviews of new albims from Margo Price and Geese   (16:53 - 32:00) - We launch into a lightning round to cover a bunch of great singles from 1998 and 1999, including songs from Travis, Coldplay and Earl Brutus   (34:01 - 01:09:41) - WE analyze great albums from Belle and Sebastian, The Beta Band, Pulp, Join our Curmudgeonly Community today! facebook.com/groups/curmudgeonrock   Hosted on Podbean! curmudgeonrock.podbean.com   Subscribe to our show on these platforms: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-curmudgeon-rock-report/id1551808911   https://open.spotify.com/show/4q7bHKIROH98o0vJbXLamB?si=5ffbdc04d6d44ecb   https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/5fea16f1-664e-40b7-932e-5fb748cffb1d/the-   Co-produced and co-hosted by The Curmudgeons - Arturo Andrade and Christopher O'Connor PJ Harvey, Blur and Muse

This was such a fun interviewand such a pleasure talking with Kolton Moore (of Kolton Moore and The Clever Few) from his home town-populaton 67! They have so much going a new single“Strawberry Thief” out TODAY, a new album “A Place That I Call Home” (available for pre-order now) out in September, and a fall tour kicking off soon! We chatted about how this new record differs from the others. Kolton called it a “grown up record”. We also chatted about how he got started in his career by taking a chance and entering a contest from a Texas radio station called “The Pickin' Party” and how things have gone from there. Truly a greatconversation with a truly humble human being.  Kolton Moore & The Clever Few have announced their sixth studio album A Place That I Call Home, due out September 26. Produced by GRAMMY-winner Matt Ross-Spang (JasonIsbell, Margo Price), the new album finds the band navigating adulthood while taking stock of hard-earned life lessons along the way.   Recorded in full-band takes at Ross-Spang's Memphis studio in less than five days, A Place That I Call Home captures Kolton Moore & The Clever Few's electrifying mix of rock, blue-collarstorytelling and Texas-sized country hooks. Lyrically, the songs here are mined from Moore's personal experiences, from wild teenage nights and mental health journeys to the joys of fatherhood. The end result is an album about redefining the meaning of home from a road-warrior band that used to play 250 shows a year when they debuted in 2012.   Made up of frontman Kolton Moore and backed by lead guitarist Ryan Wilcox, bassist Matt Gumley, keys player Sam Jones and drummer Aaron Dowd, the band strikes the right balance between Southern grit and maturity on A Place That I Call Home. With almost 630,000 uniquemonthly listeners on Spotify alone, they're now shining a light on their evolution without pulling any of the punches that have landed their music on TV shows like Yellowstone and American Idol.  Be sure to check Kolton and the band out here:  Website: Koltonmoore.com  Youtube:koltonmooreandthecleverfew  FB: Kolton Moore and the CleverFew  IG: koltondmoore  TikTok: koltonmoore_thecleverfew

We really geeked out over music and had such a great time talking with Mark about his move back to Port Angeles, Washington, dealing with the breakup of his band, and his new album “Company Man.”    Mark Fredson's musical journey spans more than two decades, marked by a dogged commitment to the pursuit of making music for music's sake. Hailing from Port Angeles, Washington, Fredson was just a sophomore in high school - when he signed his first record deal. As a frontman, songwriter, pianist, and producer, his body of work is vast, from the outlaw country of Margo Price's "Hurtin' (On the Bottle)," which he co-wrote with Price, to the theatrical pop anthems that have defined his solo career. But it's his latest album, Company Man, arriving in the Spring of 2025, that marks a a new chapter in Fredson's artistic evolution. The album explores the tension between chaotic beauty of youth and the mundane realities of growing older, all while refusing to let go of a life in service to music, even if it's sometimes more labor than love.Fredson's high-octane days as the frontman of the Nashville-by-way-of-Port Angeles band The Lonely H had their fair share of musical highlights, but it wasn't until he went solo that Fredson's true musical identity was solidified. After releasing his debut solo album, Going to the Movies, in 2020, Fredson followed up with two debauchery-fueled full-length efforts,2021's Nothing But Night and 2023's Outskirts. Now, with Company Man, he dives deeper into the internal l conflicts brought on by the pesky hands of time and the realities of makingends meet. Across its 10 lean tracks, Fredson reckons with the challenges of making art while spending over a decade working in the restaurant industry. Was it worth it? The album continues to pose this stubborn question, even if the answer remains elusive.   Be sure to check Mark out here:  BandCamp: Mark Fredson  IG: Markofthefeast

We're going a little bit country again this week on the Talkhouse Podcast—gotta keep you on your toes—with a pair of Nashville singer-songwriters who share a sensibility, some history, and sobriety, as you'll hear. One of them, Margo Price, you've hopefully heard on the podcast before; the other, Lilly Hiatt, is a first-timer, but you'd never know it. Price was a critical darling right out of the gate, and for good reason: Her debut album, released by Jack White's Third Man Records, kicked some new life into country by looking both backward and forward. Since then, Price has released a series of great records as well as a phenomenal memoir called Maybe We'll Make It. Last time she was on this podcast, Price was talking to former Tom Petty sideman Mike Campbell about a collaboration they did. That's just the tip of the iceberg, and as you'll hear in this chat, she's got new music cooking, though nothing has been officially announced yet. Lilly Hiatt has a famous last name in the music world—her dad is John Hiatt—but she's cut her own path through Nashville, too. She rides a more adventurous side of the musical line, getting almost alt-rocky at some points. She's opened for everyone from Drive-By Truckers to Hiss Golden Messenger to the Mountain Goats, which should tell you something right there. This week Hiatt is releasing a new album called Forever, which is the result of some serious self-reflection and a different, entirely scrapped set of songs. The album was mixed by Paul Kolderie, known for working on early Radiohead and Pixies records. Maybe that'll also tell you something. Check out “Kwik-E-Mart” right here. In this lively conversation, Price and Hiatt talk about getting back into the game, about working with their musician husbands—Jeremy Ivey and Coley Hinson, respectively—and they talk at length about getting and staying sober in a town where that's not always so easy. I had never heard Nashville described as a “drinking town with a music problem” before. Enjoy. In the last year he toured with Loving and Jose Gonzalez. He recently wrapped up a three-week residency at Los Angeles' Club TeeGee, and will head out on the road with Weyes Blood and Indigo Sparke in the coming months. To coincide with the news of his signing to Partisan Records, Burton has released the new song “Maria.”“Maria” was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon Studio with some of the best studio players in LA, and perfectly showcases Burton's knack for mining pure Laurel Canyon AM gold. Pastoral string arrangements bloom in the background of Sam's striking honeyed vocals-like a modern-day Campbell, Orbison, or Nilsson.Together, Wilson and Burton achieve a sound that doesn't descend into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, the music finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his acclaimed 2020 debut I Can Go With You, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity. The Psyche Magic Salon is a reader-supported publication. It's an election day bonus episode! Today we're gonna be digging way back in the archive to episode 4: Focusing on Margo Guryan. This was recorded in early 2019, when I was still figuring out this show's format.  At that time, it consisted of panelists with a shared interest (Andrew Dorsett and Michael Sean Coleman) nerding out about a favorite artist, and sometimes we'd get the chance to talk to the artist or somebody who was close to them. Margo Guryan passed away three years ago, and at the time of recording she did not agree to an interview, but she and I had some email correspondence that was helpful in researching her, and she put me in touch with her publisher, Jonathan Rosner, who also happens to be her stepson, who joined us about halfway through the show. I've re-edited that admittedly rough episode to make it more digestible, and at the top of the show I spoke with Jonathan again about the latest renaissance of Margo's music- two new reissues, plus a tribute album called “Like Someone I Know" which features Pearl And The Oysters, TOPS, Margo Price, Clairo and many others, available from Sub Pop and Urban Outfitters. Low Profile is supported by you on Patreon.com/lowprofile where you can sign up for flexible monthly donations that afford me the time it takes to research, record and edit this program. If you enjoy this show and can afford to contribute anything at all, it would be extremely helpful. It adds up in a big way. Believe me, I know things are tight, so if you can't chip in financially, please tell somebody you know about a favorite episode of Low Profile and share it on the internet. If you are in a position to donate, that address again is patreon.com/lowprofile  Thanks to this show's in-kind sponsors here in Olympia, including Three Magnets Brewing Company, Rainy Day Records, Old School Pizzeria, San Francisco Street Bakery, and Schwartz' Deli- if you come through Olympia these are all excellent places to visit.

Mike Campbell shared a phone call with Crystal McKenzie to talk about how his surprise appearance with Bob Dylan came together for Farm Aid 2023. He also touched on playing with Fleetwood Mac, and asking Dave Grohl to play with the Heartbreakers after the demise of Nirvana. They also discussed the new tribute entitled A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, on which he worked with Margo Price, Chris Stapleton, and others.

Hello friends! Nashville-based artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Dex Green is my guest for episode 1439! As an engineer and producer Dex has worked with Elvis Costello, Margo Price and Shemekia Copeland, which earned him a GRAMMY nomination for mixing and engineering her 2022 album Done Come Too Far  on 3Sirens Music Group. His debut solo album, the dreamy and soulful Imaginary War is out now wherever you stream or download music. Listen to Imaginary War on Spotify. Dex and I have a great conversation about engineering and producing records in Nashville, being inspired by the loss of his mother to make Imaginary War, his love of dreamy soul music, growing up in South Carolina, studying music at the Manhattan School of Music, recording on his own and much more. I had a great time getting to know Dex. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. If you feel so inclined.
