This historical fantasy is from the realms of classic YA and we're both super excited to revisit this novel that we both read around 10 years ago for the podcast as from what we remember, it has definite dark academia fantasy vibes. While this series is now out of print, ‘The Great and Terrible Beauty' is still available in ebook, and it stands as a touchstone of YA. It's 1895, and after the death of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped off from the life she knows in British India to Spence Academy, a proper boarding school in England.Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma's reception at Spence is a chilly one. To make things worse, she's being followed by a mysterious young Indian man who has been sent to watch her. But why? What is her destiny? And what will her entanglement with Spence's most powerful girls – and their foray into the spiritual world – lead to?But how will it hold up to the tropes of dark academia and a reread a decade later? In this episode we discuss:Revisiting a classic YA novel fifteen years laterSophie's issues with historical fiction and the subjugation of womenAn unexpected treatise on politics, reading, and how everything is political in the wake of the 2024 US Presidential ElectionAnd a whole lot of tangents…

This is a story about how quickly politics changes. Gemma Doyle was elected the MP for her hometown in 2010 with a massive majority. Then the 2014 independence referendum happened, upending Scottish politics. A year later Gemma lost her seat to the SNP on a 34% swing. Then Jeremy Corbyn became leader of the Labour Party. This is a refreshingly honest account of what it's like to be a Labour politician of this generation. Gemma worked for Labour in government, became an MP in opposition and saw British politics completely transform. No longer an MP, she is still involved with the party and she explains why, when others left, she decided to stay. Vicki Delany is one of Canada’s most prolific and varied crime writers and a national bestseller in the U.S. She has written more than thirty books: clever cozies to Gothic thrillers to gritty police procedurals, to historical fiction and novellas for adult literacy. She is currently writing three cozy mystery series: the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop series for Crooked Lane, the Year Round Christmas mysteries for Penguin Random House and, as Eva Gates, the Lighthouse Library series, for Crooked Lane Books. There’s a Murder Afoot: Just in time for Sherlock Holmes’s 166th birthday, the fifth installment in national bestselling author Vicki Delany’s Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mystery takes Sherlockania to the max with a Holmes convention and historic 221 Baker Street.Gemma Doyle and her friends travel to London for a Sherlock Holmes convention–but will Gemma’s father take the fall for a felonious forger’s fatality? The 6th of January is Sherlock Holmes’s birthday, and lucky for Gemma Doyle, January is also the slowest time of the year at both the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, and Mrs. Hudson’s Tea Room. It’s a good time for Gemma and her friends to travel to England for a Holmes Convention. For Gemma, the trip provides an opportunity to visit her parents, Jayne Wilson is excited about seeing all the sites London has to offer, and Ryan Ashburton just wants to spend some time with Gemma. But the trip is immediately derailed when Gemma’s father Henry recognizes his brother-in-law Randolph Denhaugh, who disappeared more than thirty years ago on the night he stole a valuable painting from his own parents.Henry, a retired detective with Scotland Yard, has been keeping tabs on the man’s career as a forger of Old Masters and he warns Randy to stay away from his family. It’s up to Gemma, with the help of her friends, to plunge into the “lowest and vilest alleys” of London to save her father from prison.
