GenZ: the new player in India's investment game

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Thursday, July 4, 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started:Indian stock market benchmark indices Sensex and the Nifty hit fresh highs on Wednesday. The Sensex breached the coveted 80,000 landmark, while the Nifty scaled its fresh peak of 24,309 points. The Sensex finally ended the day 0.69 per cent higher, while the Nifty closed 0.67 per cent higher.A new player has entered India's investment game - and it's not a new company or a new investor. It's an entire generation of Indians. GenZ now makes up 40 per cent of the 95 million registered users on the National Stock Exchange. This marks a substantial increase from the 22-23% share before the pandemic. Mint's Ram Sahgal and Sneha Shah spoke to industry insiders to report on the changing demographics of Indian investors. Dhiraj Relli, MD & CEO of HDFC Securities, notes that this age group tends to favour short-term gains through index options and intraday trading rather than long-term investment strategies. This trend is reflected in the overall dynamics of the NSE's investor base, where the median age has dropped from 38 in FY18 to 32. When Uttar Pradesh reported higher GST collections than Tamil Nadu for April, it stirred discussions about potential shifts in economic performance between the states. However, this occurrence seems more like a statistical outlier rather than a trend, as Tamil Nadu quickly regained the lead in May. Over the past six years, Tamil Nadu's gap in GST collection over Uttar Pradesh has actually widened from 13% to 16%. When GST was rolled out in 2017, there was a theory that it might benefit larger but economically weaker states due to their higher population and consumption. But the numbers tell a different story. Despite their large populations, states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar haven't seen the surge in collections many expected. In contrast, Maharashtra, another populous state but with a stronger economic base, has consistently outperformed in GST collections. Our partners at howindialives.com report on this scenario that challenges the simplistic equation that a bigger population equals higher GST revenue. The price of onions has always been a pain point for parties when it comes to electoral politics. Historically, soaring onion prices have influenced voter behaviour. The looming shadow of another onion price hike is causing the Indian government to take preemptive measures to avoid a repeat of last year's crisis when skyrocketing prices hit consumers hard. Despite a good harvest, fewer onion-laden trucks are rolling into the country's largest vegetable market—Delhi's Azadpur mandi. This raises concerns about a potential price rise. This decrease in supply has not yet reached alarming levels, but it's enough to make the government cautious. Mint's Puja Das reports that the government is considering requiring traders to declare their stocks and possibly imposing stock limits if the situation does not improve. This issue is particularly sensitive as several state elections are on the horizon.Top Chinese smartphone brands Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi are exploring partnerships with Indian companies to manufacture and distribute their products locally. This follows previous attempts to create joint ventures with Indian entities, but those didn't progress as planned. The discussions have evolved as large Indian conglomerates including the Tata Group, Reliance Industries, and Dixon Technologies have showed interest in setting up their own manufacturing operations rather than taking a majority stake in these Chinese firms. Mint's telecom correspondent Gulveen Aulakh along with Shouvik Das report on developments that come amid ongoing investigations by India's Enforcement Directorate into allegations of tax evasion by the Chinese companies, totaling around ₹9,000 crore. This scrutiny has made potential Indian partners wary of associating closely with these brands despite the mutual benefits a partnership could bring. In Bengaluru's Embassy Manyata Business Park, a 15-year-old Rosewood building has been extensively renovated to meet modern office standards. This 250,000 square foot structure now features a modern design with a double-glazed glass façade, updated elevators, and new interior finishes. It's part of a broader upgrade within the park, which also includes new premium dining options, enhancing the park's appeal to the 125,000 employees who work out of its office buildings. The renovation reflects a wider trend towards high-quality office spaces that combine functionality with luxury, aiming to attract top tenants and cater to a young workforce. Such spaces command a higher rental premium due to their enhanced amenities and design that prioritise employee experience and comfort. This shift is driven by companies' focus on retaining talent and making offices more appealing places to work. Mint's Madhurima Nandy takes a detailed look. We'd love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Let us know by writing to us at feedback@livemint.com. Interview with Alex Underwood, MD/CEO of Empire Energy Group Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/empire-energy-asxeeg-technical-analysis-due-diligence-4162Recording date: 26th January 2024Empire Energy controls huge shale gas resources in Australia's Northern Territory, estimated at over 40 trillion cubic feet by independent assessors. With domestic east coast markets facing looming supply shortfalls amid rising global demand, Empire has a clear strategic production roadmap to monetize these world-scale gas assets.Initially focussed on oil and gas production in the US, Empire pivoted towards acquiring and proving up acreage in the vast onshore Beetaloo Basin after capitalizing on the US shale boom's early stages. Australia's Beetaloo region shares similar shale geology and Empire moved swiftly to build a dominant position. Few companies boast more prime shale acres.Having confirmed world-class volumes of gas in place via drilling vertical and horizontal test wells, Empire is fast-tracking low cost pilot schemes. An initial 3 well development campaign with 60 stage hydraulic fracturing aims to flow test production potential. Early success would derisk substantial follow-on development, likely attracting industry interest.Empire has accelerated pilot production plans by acquiring a second-hand gas facility for a bargain $3 million. Refurbishing this will expedite on-site infrastructure assembly. Along with advanced talks on securing gas sales agreements, first cash flow now looks possible inside 12 months.Beyond pilot schemes, Empire has a multi-stage production growth plan. Phase one fills spare capacity in an existing pipeline traversing Empire's permits. Rapidly expanding output from 25 million cubic feet per day to feed Darwin's energy shortfall would generate over $100 million annual revenue. Subsequent phases look to ramp up production, ultimately targeting 1 billion cubic feet daily for southern LNG exports. Attractive economics expected from initial wells provides cashflow to fund each organic development stage. From an early entry point, Empire Energy offers leveraged exposure to realization of the Beetaloo Basin's full potential. Key de-risking milestones are approaching fast. Cash flow and resource appraisal progress could spotlight Empire's world-scale gas resource. Its disciplined step-by-step commercialization strategy aims to capitalize on strengthening gas market conditions. Targeting first production within 12 months provides investors a near term catalyst.—View Empire Energy Group's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/empire-energy-groupSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

On Episode 9 , I spoke with Shiv Rao. Dr. Rao is the founder and CEO of Abridge, which uses ambient AI to summarize conversations into clinical documentation. He is also a practicing cardiologist, and previously led the provider-facing investment portfolio for UPMC. “What did the doctor say?" is inevitably the first question we ask a loved one who has just been to see a clinician. But how often do we get a clear answer ? How many of our loved ones are actually knowledgeable enough to grasp the details of their condition/diagnosis/care plan? Research out of Dartmouth suggests that people forget up to 80% of what they've heard from their healthcare professional. That's what makes Abridge so important, and is likely the reason that over 300,000 people are using the free version of the Abridge app (which you can download here on the app store) to help make sense of medical conversations and share information from clinical consultations with loved ones.As Dr. Rao pointed out in our conversation, there is a public health emergency occurring in the United States - we do not have the supply of clinicians necessary to meet the demands for care delivery. Compounding a lack of clinicians is an uptick in burnout. The AMA currently estimates that physician burnout is at 63%, and an article in the Journal of Internal Medicine that said clinicians would need 27 hours per day to do all the work that's required of them. Shiv started Abridge to reduce the documentation burden on physicians, and to provide patients with a digestible, “translated” version of their clinical encounter that they can share with family members.  The benefits are also significant for clinicians. Over 80% of the clerical work that used to be involved in documenting is now getting automated by Abridge - this solution is currently saving clinicians on the platform an average of 2 hours a day! Ultimately, as we discussed, a clinical note has three stakeholders:Other clinicians on the care team - they need to understand Dr. Rao's medical differential, and how he was thinking about the diagnosis/care plan.Health plans - Dr. Rao needs to build his note in such a way that the diagnosis and follow-up recommendations can be properly coded and billed.Patients and their family members, who may need to take action based on Dr. Rao's findings, which they thus need to understand.A single note cannot be all of those things at once. Abridge solves this problem by summarizing and structuring the information to create different artifacts for all three sets of customers.Abridge has raised $27 million to date from investors like Union Square Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Wittington Ventures. For more information,  you can check out their website: https://www.abridge.comPlease make sure to check out the Society for HealthCare Innovation's (SHCI) website for more content.

It is an Australian-owned company focused on the exploration and development of its Aurora Energy Metals Project in Oregon, USA. With a background in mine engineering, he has operated at the MD/CEO level for the last 15 years, in Africa, Australia and Asia, in a broad spectrum of minerals including uranium, potash and other industrial minerals and base metals. He tells us more about Aurora Energy Metals and discusses, in more depth, the uranium market which is his expertise.Greg is also going to be speaking at the upcoming Mines and Money event in London at the end of November 2022. So, be sure to reach out to him there in person if you have any further questions. Enjoy the episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a uranium revival on the way. Energy security is fundamental and the benefits of nuclear are being recognised. Their Oregon project is one of the largest uranium projects in the US. Mining uranium at scale is far more environmentally sustainable than the old approach of hundreds of small operations. Having both lithium and uranium to mine provides Aurora with the ability to pivot between the two. The mineral Acts that have been passed by Biden are supportive of minerals, which is good news for Aurora Energy Metals. There is the potential for state funding. The site can tap into a renewable energy source, which is extremely cheap as well as clean. Potentially a pipeline or conveyor can be used to get the ore to Nevada for processing. Transportation solutions that have an exceptionally low impact on the environment. BEST MOMENTS‘produce for 10 to 50 years 1.5 to 2 million pounds of uranium. ´‘Countries are recognising nuclear energy's benefits as we recognise renewables benefits.'‘Number 1 it´s (renewable energy) cost-effective. It's inventors week on SleepTech Talk with Dr. William Noah! Dr Noah has invented a revolutionary device to make CPAP more comfortable for patients and increase adherence. The V-Com, which softens peak inspiratory flow, makes starting CPAP easier and faster. V-Com is an accessory added between the CPAP mask and the CPAP hose that is specifically engineered to reduce inspiratory pressure and flow to provide comfort with minimal to no reduction in expiratory pressure (EPAP). Since V-Com has minimal effect on EPAP, there is minimal effect on therapy. After weeks or months when the patient can easily tolerate the peak flow and inspiratory pressure of PAP therapy, the V-Com can be removed from the circuit. Join us as we learn more about this new tool that can help our patients tolerate PAP therapy and improve overall adherence!
