Following a year of incredible, awe-inspiring images from deep space, the team is celebrating the 1st birthday of the James Webb Space Telescope. They reflect on the amazing discoveries so far, and look at how JWST will alter our understanding of the universe. From this summer, the International Seabed Authority will be considering licences for deep sea mining, despite the fact that no set of rules has been agreed upon to govern it. At this critical time, the team explores new research that's showing just how damaging it could be to mine the seabed. Are the precious minerals worth the risk? One million dollars is being thrown at a decades old mathematical problem which has proved surprisingly controversial over the years. The team explains how the ABC conjecture has split the mathematical community, and how substantial cash prizes could end the debate once and for all.Sloths once came in a giant variety, and were as big as grizzly bears. These giant sloths died out 10,000 years ago but new archaeological evidence suggests humans were making jewellery out of their bones – giving us a new understanding of when humans first arrived in the Americas.CRISPR to the rescue! Making paper isn't the most environmentally friendly process, but CRISPR gene editing (the hero promised to solve many issues) can apparently help here too. The team explains how it involves modifying trees to make them easier to process. On the pod are Timothy Revell, Christie Taylor, Leah Crane, Chen Ly and Corryn Wetzel. The giant sloth is anextinct animal that could be distinguished by its large size. The species firstappeared 35 million years ago. They evolved from the Promegatherium, which wasanother large mammal, in South America. Their preferred habitat was forests.Later on, or 8 million years ago, they started migrating towards North America.During this era, a lot of other animals were migrating. It went extinct around12 to 10 thousand years ago. This was a ground sloth so it didn't climb treeslike sloths today.Like modern sloths, the giant sloth was anherbivore. It ate the leaves of the yucca tree, agave plants, and grasses.Since they were so tall, they were able to easily grab the branches. Somespecies of the sloth were 10 feet tall and weighed one ton, while other speciescould stand up to 20 feet tall and weighed 4 tons. There isn't a solid answeras to why prehistoric animals were so much larger back then, but somescientists say it is due to more oxygen in the air or simply more space. Thesloths could be more than double the height of a tall human. There are lots of theories as to why the giantsloth species went extinct, and more than one factor probably contributed toit. The most likely explanation is that they were hunted to extinction byhuman hunters. Another theory is that the end of the ice age caused theirextinction. For wild Suzhou, I'm palm tree and thankyou for listening.

The Brazilian Cryptid often described to varying degrees: either man sized or the compared to a Giant Sloth creature, sometimes descrbied as cycloptic, with large claws and alligator like skin that is impervious to arrows and bullets. Is this creature a long lost relative to Giant Sloths, is it something darker and more sinister, or is it the work of the human mind? Find out all this and more on this week's episode. Sandeep and Marty break down this podcast into three sections. Part One deals with the difference of approach to problem solving between artists and engineers. You can guess who is who by now. The talk revolves around getting ready for winter, infrastructure (such as sewers) and who is better equipped for handling such challenges. The arrival of a Union Pacific Rail-laying train at the vast 2000 acre estate brings us to Part Two. On this section, Sandeep and Marty discuss an article Sandeep found that illustrates how much classical masters of music, such as Bach and Beethoven are currently earning on the musical portal Spotify. The article is deceptive in that such masters, with 300 years of promotion behind them receive royalties (or someone does) of about $200,000 adjusted for inflation. But the reality is that the average artist (such as Marty) receives far less and the average payout per listen is shy of four cents. Sandeep and Marty discuss the lopsided field of the music business and why such big labels, who sign, promote and make-an-artist-a-product-to-sell, still have much power. Part Three. We touch upon the announcement of the extinction of 23 species in the United States. We come full circle to our discussion in Part One of the analytical verse emotional side of people. Sandeep believes in the power of science and that our humanity-created problems, such as climate change, extinction and hunger will be solved by science. Marty goes on to explain his desire to see science bring back species of animals and how infrastructure indeed needs some "big ideas" to make things happen. Marty also says (referencing Part Two) that perhaps the arts need to take a back seat to science these days as we need brains solving such issues. The discovery of 26,000 old footprints of paleo-Americans hunting the Giant Sloth in what is now White Sands, New Mexico illustrates that man has been at changing the environment for quite some time now. And that it may be science that is needed in the end to make all things right.

We've officially hit a decade of MonsterTalk. In this episode we get "old school" and talk about the legendary Mapinguari, and how cryptozoologists have tried to explain the folklore of this massive South American animal by claiming it to be a kind of Bigfoot creature, or even a Giant Ground Sloth. We take a deep dive into what Paleontology can tell us about the real historical records of Giant Ground Sloths (Megatherium) and see how well these creatures line up with the legend of the Mapinguari. Our guest is Uruguayan paleontologist Dr. Richard A. Fariña. Links Dr. Fariña's Giant Sloth website (English / Spanish) Paper describing the site of the Arroyo del Vizcaíno site near Sauce, Uruguay The Shasta Giant Sloth site David C. Oren's theory of Sloths as possible explanation of Mapinguari has been covered in The New York Times and Discovery Magazine. Apparently, Behemoth from Godzilla: King of the Monsters 2019 is a Mapinguari! Who knew? We also discussed a few megafauna in this episode. Here's our Who's Who for those names: Gomphothere - similar to an elephant or mammoth Glyptodon - similar to an enormous armadillo Megatherium - a gigantic ground sloth that is the main paleontological subject of the episode And don't forget the question of Sloths and Avocados! The paper for that research is here.

Tell Me Something I Don't Know is Boing Boing's podcast featuring artists, writers, filmmakers, and other creative people discussing their work, ideas, and the practical side of how they do what they do. The animation project Giant Sloth, starring Paul Giamatti, could be described as Night at the Museum meets Eraserhead. In this episode, we discuss the making of this animated short with its creator, Paul Hornschemeier. He tells us how the cast came together, what the transition from comics to filmmaking and television is like, and how social media has helped him draw more. He's currently raising funds to complete Giant Sloth. Paul Hornschemeier is a cartoonist, writer, artist, designer, animator, and filmmaker. His thought-provoking books include Mother, Come Home, Three Paradoxes, Life with Mr. Dangerous, and Artists Authors Thinkers Directors. He animated the opening credits for IFC's Comedy Bang Bang. Keep up with Hornschemeier online at Forlorn Funnies. He posts a new drawing every day on the Daily Forlorn tumblr.
I tried to interview Paul Hornschemeier back in February, on getting a bit of last minute news from his on-again, off-again publisher Fantagraphics that he would be in the city for an event at the Strand bookstore. We missed one another, like podcasting ships in the night, but the cartoonist promised that he would be back soon enough, visiting to work on some project or another. He delivered on that promise a couple months later, at the MoCCA independent comics festival, where he tapped me on the shoulder and introduced himself. I’d had no idea he was going to be at the event — then again, neither did he. After all, he didn’t have a book to promote, but opted to show up on a bit of a whim. That’s not to say, of course, that Hornschemeier hasn’t been keeping plenty busy — in fact, given the number of irons he has in the fire, it’s something of a minor miracle he’s managed to carve out a weekend at all. In addition to a handful of graphic novels, the Hornschemeier makes music, animates and has recently tried his hand at writing and directing films. Just last week, his latest project hit Kickstarter with a splash. The short "animated crisis" Giant Sloth is well on its way to its $25,000 goal, with around $19k pledged as of the writing of this — a fact no doubt helped along by a voice cast that includes Paul Giamatti and comedians Jason Mantzoukas and Kate McKinnon.
