Send us a textYou can tell a lot about Ted Russell Kamp from his grin.  When he is playing a song or talking about touring, he lights up with a deep joy.  Being an independent artist is not easy calling.  You wear many hats, slog many miles, and suffer setbacks from missing strings to club cancellations.  But those who can show they can take licks and deliver some guitar licks all the same with a sense of fun are the ones who make it.  TRK has 17 albums out and his latest, California Son celebrates not only the free spirit that is California, but also is an anthem of love for his craft of songwriting and his love of those who have supported him through the years.  We get to hear Ted talk about how he started and where he has been in the business.  And we get a wonderful visit to his studio, where he plays us some of his favorite songs, including one with only a bass guitar for accompaniment.  His website is www.tedrussellkamp.com.Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. Send us a textNikki O'Neill is calling Chicago her sweet home.  Her bandmate and husband, Rich Lackowski grew up in Chicago but moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.  There he met O'Neill, who despite her Irish last name, spent a good part of her life in Sweden.  Nikki ended up in Los Angeles, pursuing a goal of being a full-time musician.  Together, O'Neill (lead singer, songwriter) and Lackowski (percussionist, vocalist) joined with other musicians and had a band in Los Angeles, working the musical circuit, writing songs and enjoying the unique life that California offers.  Along the way, they fell in love and married.  Longing for some stability in their lives, they looked to find a musical scene where they could pursue their livelihoods, have a home and also enjoy some of their non-musical pursuits. (Both are avid adventurers, exploring different cultures for their music and cuisine.) It was O'Neill who decided that Chicago could be that place, and they moved to a beautiful home and were delighted to find out that in the Windy City they could live a life as independent musicians.   They now have a new band, a new record "Stories I Only Tell My Friends" and an expanded following of ardent Midwesterners.   It's a tale of travels, some trials and a triumph for this duo, who as a married couple have proven that dreams come true if we make them come true. www.Nikkioneill.com is the website.  Check out her bio, her music and catch a show.  Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. Send us a textWell-known for the alternative country band Dolly Varden, as well as Stump the Host, Steve Dawson is a lifer when it comes to music.  His family roots in Saskatchewan, Dawson has lived for a time in California and Idaho before heading to Chicago in the late 1980's dragging all that western with him.  There, he found a music scene that embraced his style of writing and performing. Chicago being cross-roads of the country-- has its own peculiar mixture of dustbowl, Appalachian, western, bluegrass, Celtic, Mexican, jazz, blues, country and garage rock.  Those elements are all called upon when it comes to being a singer with a guitar in the Windy City, let alone a full band. The small clubs had patrons of all stripes who expected such a mix and were delighted when a band dished out its own special recipe.  Though tough to make a living solely on them, these clubs were the perfect place for experimentation, expression and performance. It's the salsa---not the chips, and Dawson's mix of songwriting is personal, powerful and worth indulging in.  A contemplative man, painfully open, yet guarded enough, Steve Dawson is proof that the city of Big Shoulders is also the city of singer-songwriters.  His bandmate, wife and artist in her own right Diane Christiansen, make their home not too far from those clubs along Division Street.  His website is www.SteveDawsonmusic.com.Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. Martin discusses the significance of the anniversary of the start of the Civil War with the firing on Ft. Sumter.  How the war, which focused on the elimination of slavery, was also a war about class power, in this case, the Southern elite.  The slave owners were determined to hold power and economic power by keeping people enslaved.  Once the war ended, the next approach was to disenfranchise the newly freed Americans through Jim Crow.  This was successful for almost a century until the rise of the civil rights movement and Martin Luther King Jr.   With civil rights came again the war on poverty which was truly an attempt at equality among the classes.  This attempt was ultimately thwarted in many ways with the rise of the Republican party persuading Southern Democrats to switch.  The rise of partisan politics, the Tea Party and eventually MAGA has been the continuation of trying to maintain and expand the 1% of society.  Like their plantation forebears, these politicians have managed to persuade some of the yeomanry to "arms" on their behalf.   While not exactly an overt war, it is nonetheless a war on equality: economic, rights and social standing.  This has spilled into the 2024 election.  Holding the funds for Ukraine, under the idea guise of border safety (in spite of a bipartisan compromise earlier this year) has endangered not Ukraine, but the standing of the United States.  The Gazan war and the extreme right government in Israel has furthered endangered the west.  Israel's attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria has once again directly brought in the United States into conflict.  Oddly enough, the need for funds for Ukraine and Israel are hostage due to the erosion of the Republican Party.Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. David Rocco Facchini is an artist's artist.  He's at once a visual artist, making amazing sculptures out of found objects, such as bits of old movie equipment, he's a storyteller, a stop motion movie maker whose most recent film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival, and also an adventurer of sorts.  He recently set out in a Sprinter Van to explore the psyche of America.  The result is a new film, USA2Z, which is in the final stages of production.   Facchini has a fun website with a lot of examples of his film and art and interviews.  Check out www.dellaroccostudios.com.This episode continues to delve into the complexities regarding community.  As Facchini did his social experiment of word association, he became aware of how people percieve themselves.  That community, government, religion and other social gatherings are somewhat skewed in this era of sound bites, social media, talking points and anger.  People seem desperate to hold onto something as their very sense of self is under attack from variety of sources, all intent on making that self, theirs.  Tune in to a wonderful insight to the state our human condition--now.Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT.
