Resource minister Shane Jones is considering a request from the gas and oil lobby to underwrite the risk of fossil fuel exploration. Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
The petroleum commission has hinted that it is considering reducing government's 15% stake in fresh oil exploration investment brought into the country.
The government will look at ways to set up long-term security for investors, when it reverses an oil and gas ban. Critics say this will be detrimental to the environment. Resources Minister Shane Jones told Mike Hosking “No one is going to make a long-term capital commitment to New Zealand in the face of short-term commitments.” Jones said “Potential investors are concerned there will not be confidence or security going forward.” LISTEN ABOVE. The Government will remove the 2018 ban on petroleum exploration beyond onshore Taranaki. The decision's being labelled a 'backwards step' by environmentalist groups. Energy Resources Aotearoa Chief Executive, John Carnegie, told Mike Hosking “In New Zealand, the ironic thing is coal has been a balancing energy fuel.” Carnegie said “There's plenty of gas here, it's just a matter of getting more explorers down here and having more wells drilled to find it.” LISTEN ABOVE. Mr. Yinka Ogunleye (Yinka) is an adept and passionate leader in Strategy and Planning with over two (2) decades of experience; dedicated to driving innovation and results across multi-company structured organizations in the Energy, Oil and Gas industry. He has proven ability with broad exposures to manage strategy and planning processes, nurture the growth of business through development of company objectives, targets and performance aspirations. He has exposures covering Oil Exploration, Oil Production and Gas Businesses in the upstream and midstream sectors. He started his career as a Database Administrator, Financial Systems with Pan Ocean Oil Corporation Nigeria Limited. His career had since traversed Information Technology, Business Development, Technical and Commercial functions. He had the coordinating role of Strategy Development across six (6) business arms of a Group, spanning upstream Oil and Gas, Energy development, Pipeline, Gas Processing and Monetization. He joined Amazon Energy Group in 2020 as Vice President New Ventures, and Group Head Strategy and Planning. In these roles he was among several functions coordinating the Strategy and Planning programs and initiatives for incubating projects through creative commercial arrangements; developing new business opportunities and partnerships; and superintending over the Group's corporate strategy, planning and performance program. Yinka holds a Bachelor's degree in Zoology and a Master's Degree in Computer Science from the Lagos State University, Ojo. He obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Information Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. He also obtained an MBA from the Lagos Business School, and was on exchange program to the IESE Business School, University of Navarra, Barcelona, Spain where he earned a certificate in Entrepreneurship and Competitive Strategy. He is a certified Project Management Practitioner, Balance Scorecard Professional and Performance Management Practitioner. He has been doing his Doctoral studies where he is currently researching on Innovation and Responsible Leadership at the Gordon's Institute of Business Science, South Africa. He holds a Certificate Business Analytics at the Harvard Business School. Yinka is an entrepreneur. He is the founder of a start-up called Riba-x(www.riba-x.com), a Search, Connect and Communities platform for small businesses and communities of shared interests. He also runs AtriumData Solutions and Services Limited, a Strategy and Project Consulting company Yinka is also currently into Agri-business, where he is developing a Palm Oil plantation and Pig Farm. Key Takeaways 1. You can still reach your end-goal even if you're traveling a different path - Yinka was always passionate about IT growing up. He had a computer scientist father and learned coding languages like C++ and worked with databases. He wanted to pursue a degree in Computer Science but unfortunately, didn't make the cut. Yinka instead pursued a degree in Zoology yet he still managed to land a IT role post-graduation. 2. Don't be afraid to branch out - After learning Zoology, specializing in genetics and working various roles in the IT field, Yinka went to pursue an MBA in Business and tackled his entrepreneur side. Exploring your interests and diversifying your knowledge is a great way to live a fulfilling life. 3. Mentor and mentee relationships can have different forms - For Yinka, the mentor-mentee dynamic involved his mentor asking questions and probing his (the mentee's) thoughts rather than providing advice directly. This pushed Yinka to either mull over his mentor's prompts or provide an answer to his mentor's questions, causing him to engage in deep thinking. Today, Yinka and his mentor are as close as brothers. 4. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey - Entrepreneurship can be extremely gratifying but it also comes with its ups and downs. Yinka founded “Dago” with his good friend, now turned business partner. Unfortunately, the company hit a brick wall and the business relationship between Yinka and his friend fell apart. Today, Yinka repackaged the idea of Dago and turned it into a new project called “Riba-x.” 5. Ensure you derive pleasure from what you do - Whether it's through your job, hobbies or relationships, make sure that what you are investing in brings you joy. If you pursue things that you derive pleasure from, you're more likely to feel content with it despite any drawbacks. Applying this to a career, if you are doing something you love every single day, eventually money comes second to your happiness. A group of law students is taking the government to court for approving two new onshore oil and gas exploration. Students for Climate Solutions argue the permits in Taranaki goes against the Zero Carbon Act, the Paris Agreement, and fails to protect the rights of tangata whenua. The Energy Minister Megan Woods declined an interview, saying the matter is before the courts. Instead, she issued a statement, saying those decisions "should come as no surprise" as Cabinet set out three onshore blocks back in 2018 for the Taranaki region. That came amid an announcement to end offshore exploration, but onshore permits have continued. Students for Climate Solutions co-founder Ri Comer spoke to Corin Dann.

The Taraba State Governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, has called on the Federal Government to speed up oil exploration in the northeast region of the country in order to help enhance and diversify the country's economy. He urged the federal government to expand and expedite exploration in the Chad basin, as well as the Benue trough, which, according to geological reports, is rich in oil and gas.He says they anticipate that early exploitation of petroleum resources in the North-East region will increase our revenue profile.Governor Ishaku also recommended that the Forum push for the removal of the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources from the exclusive list to the concurrent list.

It's been a busy week. RFA's Drake Long and Mat Pennington first discuss Japan's recent drills in the South China Sea and the new Prime Minister's decision to visit Vietnam and Indonesia. Then they look at the tense situation in the skies over Pratas atoll, one of Taiwan's few outposts in the South China Sea, and the surprising announcement by Philippine Secretary of Energy Alfonso Cusi that the Philippines will open up its waters to energy exploration from international companies.
President Duterte's decision to lift the oil exploration moratorium came about with the impending depletion of our natural gas reserves in Malampaya. The Department of Energy (DOE) issued a “resume-to-work” notice to select companies, allowing them begin petroleum-related activities in certain areas within the West Philippine Sea. Oil exploration stocks surged and hit price ceiling after said news, and one of the biggest beneficiaries is PXP Energy Corp. whose shares jumped by nearly 50% on Friday. Then they look at the tense situation in the skies over Pratas atoll, one of Taiwan’s few outposts in the South China Sea, and the surprising announcement by Philippine Secretary of Energy Alfonso Cusi that the Philippines will open up its waters to energy exploration from international companies.
A Canadian company has gotten permission to drill for oil and gas in Namibia’s Kavango Basin — an important ecosystem that shelters the country’s largest elephant population and feeds water into the world-famous Okavango Delta in neighboring Botswana. Although Namibia says this drilling is mere exploration, environmentalists fear oil development there will harm local communities and wildlife.
Data obtained from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries showed that Nigeria’s rig count fell to six in July from nine in June. The rig count, which stood at 21 in March, fell to 16 in April and eight in May. The rig count is largely a reflection of the level of exploration, development and production activities occurring in the oil and gas sector. The global oil benchmark, Brent crude, plunged to as low as $15.98 per barrel in April, its lowest since June 1999. It traded around $45 per barrel on Monday. Analysts at Financial Derivatives Company Limited on Monday said that oil price volatility would continue in the coming weeks due to supply and demand concerns. The collapse in crude oil demand and prices occasioned largely by the coronavirus pandemic has forced many operators to put exploration on the back burner. --- This episode is sponsored by · Afrolit Podcast: Hosted by Ekua PM, Afrolit shares the stories of multi-faceted Africans one episode at a time. https://open.spotify.com/show/2nJxiiYRyfMQlDEXXpzlZS?si=mmgODX3NQ-yfQvR0JRH-WA Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support
Charles Hutchinson is one of the founding partners of Spectrum IFA, a company offering independent financial advice across 7 countries in Europe and with headquarters in Barcelona. Charles initially joined the British army in the hope of undertaking pilot training, but as his commission came to an end, Charles decided to move into the world of finance. A slightly inauspicious start provided Charles with a second opportunity to become a pilot, this time on hovercrafts, and he spent some years in Oil Exploration in Saudi Arabia before dipping back into finance. A spell as a DJ in the United States, training as a Commodities Broker and a return to the UK culminated in the decision to move to Spain. Charles chats about his varied and interesting career that saw him travel around the world, the UK weather that prompted his move to Spain and how he went about setting up his business here. How many thousand times have you heard someone talk about working remotely, saying, "The great thing about the internet is you can work anywhere." Well, working in the oil field brings a whole new meaning to working "remotely." It's remote alright, and it's still tech, but it's of necessity, tech Acadiana style. If you started out in the oil field before the internet, before apps, before social media, and in some cases before the computer, the relentless onslaught of technology drives you to a point where you either throw up your hands and decide to be a Luddite, or you embrace change. Like Tim Supple. Tim has embraced change in a big way. For years the multi-billion dollar Acadiana oil and gas business depended for its existence on a breed of hydrocarbon cowboys called Landmen. A Landman secures the leases and rights for an oil and gas company to dig wells. That's not nearly as simple as it sounds. It can involve masses of contacts, phone calls, promises, handshakes, lunches, drinks, scraps of paper, maps, blind alleys and frequent and expensive miscalculations. Tim Supple and his partner came up with a way to take all the disparate inputs oil and gas company landmen accumulate, and assemble them in a whole new way: online. They created a web-based version of the Acadian Hydrocarbon cowboy and called him iLandman. In a tough time for oil exploration, iLandman is giving over fifteen hundred subscribers a much needed edge. Chad Theriot is on the other side of the tech revolution. Although Chad grew up in Breaux Bridge his upbringing sounds more like a kid in Silicon Valley. Chad started working with his father in the family business, CBM Technology, at the age of 12. By 15 he was a computer programmer. Chad went on to create the first automated system that uses voice to produce a transcript for court reporters, and has designed and developed software for a wide range of companies including UPS and The Kellogg Corporation. In 2011 Chad and his business partner bought his dad's company, CBM, and for that reason Chad is living back on the Silicon Bayou. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded over lunch at Social Southern Restaurant and Bar . You can see photos from this show by Gwen Aucoin and more at our website https://link.chtbl.com/Vj_kXlwb. Welcome to the first edition of China-Africa Q&A, a new podcast series that will feature interviews with key stakeholders in the China-Africa discourse. We'll publish these podcasts intermittently and, as always, welcome your feedback. In this edition, Eric speaks with Climate Home News Senior Writer, Chloé Farand, about her recent story on Niger's decision to redraw the boundaries of the Termit and Tin-Toumma nature reserve, one of Africa's largest biodiversity reserves, to accommodate the China National Petroleum Corporation who owns three oil exploration blocks that overlap with the reserve. Under the proposed change, the portions of the reserve that cross over into CNPC's oil exploration zone will no receive protected status. While the story got quite a bit of attention this summer in the francophone press, there's wasn't as much interest in English-language media. Eric spoke with Chloe from her office in London to find out more about how she came across the story and why she thinks it didn't get the same amount of attention internationally that it did in French-language media. Does it make sense to allow Oil and Gas Exploration within the boundaries of a Marine Protected Area and still call it protected? Trudeau's government thinks it does. I break down how this situation doesn't necessarily depict a Marine Protected Area, but it does describe a management area within a Marine Park. Perhaps the government of Canada is going about designating MPAs the wrong way? Take a listen and find out how. Prof. Enrique Zuazua is a Distinguished Professor of Ikerbasque (Basque Foundation for Science) and Founding Scientific Director at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), which he pushed into life in 2008. He is also Professor in leave of Applied Mathematics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and a Humboldt Awardee at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) as well. He was invited by the PDE-group of our Faculty in Karlsruhe to join our work on Wave Phenomena for some days in May 2015. In our conversation he admits that waves have been holding his interest since his work as a PhD student in Paris at the Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie in the world famous group of Jacques-Louis Lions. Indeed, waves are everywhere. They are visible in everything which vibrates and are an integral part of life itself. In our work as mathematician very often the task is to influence waves and vibrating structures like houses or antennae such that they remain stable. This leads to control problems like feedback control for elastic materials. In these problems it is unavoidable to always have a look at the whole process. It starts with modelling the problem into equations, analysing these equations (existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions and well-posedness of the problem), finding the right numerical schemes and validating the results against the process which has been modelled. Very often there is a large gap between the control in the discrete process and the numerical approximation of the model equations and some of these differences are explainable in the framework of the theory for hyperbolic partial differential equations and not down to numerical or calculation errors. In the study of Prof. Zuazua the interaction between the numerical grid and the propagation of waves of different frequencies leads to very intuitive results which also provide clear guidelines what to do about the so-called spurious wave phenomena produced by high frequencies, an example of which is shown in this podcast episode image. This is an inherent property of that sort of equations which are able to model the many variants of waves which exist. They are rich but also difficult to handle. This difficulty is visible in the number of results on existence, uniqueness and regularity which is tiny compared to elliptic and parabolic equations but also in the difficulty to find the right numerical schemes for them. On the other hand they have the big advantage that they are best suited for finding effective methods in massively parallel computers. Also there is a strong connection to so-called Inverse Problems on the theoretical side and through applications where the measurement of waves is used to find oil and water in the ground, e.g (see, e.g. our Podcast Modell004 on Oil Exploration). Prof. Zuazua has a lot of experience in working together with engineers. His first joint project was shape optimization for airfoils. The geometric form and the waves around it interact in a lot of ways and on different levels. Also water management has a lot of interesting and open questions on which he is working with colleagues in Zaragoza. At the moment there is a strong collaboration with the group of Prof. Leugering in Erlangen which is invested in a Transregio research initiative on gasnets which is a fascinating topic ranging from our everyday expectations to have a reliable water and gas supply at home to the latest mathematical research on control. Of course, in working with engineers there is always a certain delay (in both directions) since the culture and the results and questions have to be translated and formulated in a relevant form between engineers and mathematicians. In dealing with theses questions there are two main risks: Firstly, one finds wrong results which are obviously wrong and secondly wrong results which look right but are wrong nonetheless. Here it is the crucial role of mathematicians to have the right framework to find these errors. Prof. Zuazua is a proud Basque. Of the 2.5 Mill. members of the basque people most are living in Spain with a minority status of their culture and language. But since the end of the Franco era this has been translated into special efforts to push culture and education in the region. In less than 40 years this transformed the society immensely and led to modern universities, relevant science and culture which grew out of "nothing". Now Spain and the Basque country have strong bonds to the part of Europe on the other side of the Pyrenees and especially with industry and research in Germany. The Basque university has several campuses and teaches 40.000 students. This success could be a good example how to extend our education system and provide possibilities for young people which is so much a part of our culture in Europe across the boundaries of our continent.

This episode is a conversation with Michael Commer of the Berkeley Lab about geophyiscal modeling in oil exploration. We start with a brief discussion about how oil gets created and in which geological formations it can be found. We then proceed to talk about various means of finding oil using various means and techniques. The majority of the episode's conversation revolves around how numerical mathematics can help interpret, refine and work with exploration results.
The 218th edition of America's Debate Radio with Mike and Jaime. During the first hour, we discussed the oil drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and the response and clean up efforts.
