From the depths of the Ice Age to the 20th century, why – and how – have species gone extinct? And are humans always to blame? In conversation with James Osborne, Dr Ross Barnett unpacks how the causes of extinction have shifted through time, and how looking back at the history of these lost species might help us tackle extinction in the future. A woolly mammoth by 2028.That's the bold claim from US company Colossal Biosciences, who say research is under way that will make this possible. But even if we have the technology to bring back a long dead species, should we? We hear the arguments for and against de-extinction.Also this week, what will Europa Clipper find when it heads to one of Jupiter's icy moons and how to win a Nobel Prize. Presenter: Marnie Chesterton Producers: Ella Hubber, Sophie Ormiston & Gerry Holt Editor: Martin Smith Production Co-ordinator: Andrew Rhys Lewis BBC Inside Science is produced in partnership with the Open University.
Do you know that scientists are almost ready to bring back some species that have been long gone? A T-Rex and other dangerous creatures aren't on the VIP list, so we won't see them in the not-so-distant future. But some of our most beloved characters from the Ice Age movies can be brought back to life! Instead of using the controversial term “cloning,” scientists prefer to say “make un-extinct.” To-may-to, to-mah-to, the idea is the same. An animal that died out thousands of years ago can't be brought back to life unless it's cloned. And therein lies the problem. For successful cloning, scientists need to have almost completely undamaged animal DNA. That's why some species are more likely to be resurrected than others. More than one in five species on the planet today face extinction, and that's predicted to rise to 50% by the end of the century unless we do something about it. But what if I told you extinction isn't as permanent as you think? Thanks to the wonders of science, we might even be able to turn back the hands of time by reviving some long-lost species. So, without further ado, let's explore some extinct animals that might walk the Earth once more! Our Sponsors:* Check out Incogni: https://incogni.com/beamazedAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Imagine traveling to the coldest regions of our planet and seeing a woolly mammoth walking around. Or watching a Tasmanian tiger running in its natural habitat. Or picture a horse that looks straight out of a movie scene: a Caspian horse! All of these animals went extinct some time ago but what if modern technologies can bring them back? Can some of the lost species become un-extinct? Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. We know what they looked like, what they ate, how they hunted. But do we know what they sounded like? For example, just imagine how loudly the Meg growled, as it was really huge! What about some ancient birds? Did they sound similar to some farm birds, like duck and geese? Scientists actually found out how some of the ancient creatures sounded. In this video we're gonna explore which sounds they could produce. We're gonna find out why Tyrannosaurus Rex's scream was similar to birds, not mammals. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Greetings, one and all! Today's episode features quite a contrast: the naïve, childish creatures illustrated by Hillary Stebbing in her 1946 children's book Extinct Animals, contrasted against the gnarly, outlandish modern work of Zubin Erik Dutta, a true up-and-comer in de palaeoart world. How do horror and pin-ups influence dinosaur art? Does every ceratopsian scrap gets its own genus name? What on earth is a Jakapil? And how did we end up with a dinosaur book with no T. rex in? All this and more in today's wonderful episode. Show notes at Love In The Time of Chasmosaurs
