Can genetic engineering resurrect extinct animals—and does that challenge God's role as Creator?Recent headlines from Colossal Biosciences about the company's efforts to revive extinct species such as the dire wolf have sparked global conversations about science, ethics, and the origins of life. In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines these scientific pursuits through a biblical lens, exploring what Scripture teaches about God as the designer, creator, and sustainer of all life.As humanity advances in genetic engineering and de-extinction research, how should Christians respond? Step into a natural history museum, sometimes called a ‘dead zoo', and you will find yourself surrounded by silence. Behind glass cases and inside drawers lie animals long gone: the Tasmanian tiger, the quagga, birds that no longer take flight, creatures whose skins and bones now carry only the weight of memory. These preserved remains are meant to represent care - careful handling, careful storage, and careful cataloguing, in a tribute to the long dead and sometimes extinct. But as Dr Katrina Schlunke, from the University of Potsdam and Sydney, argues, the care offered by museums is not so simple. It is bound up with histories of colonialism, extinction, and exclusion, which are typically not explored or acknowledged in the displays we encounter.

Victor L. Vescovo is a private investor with over thirty years of experience in a variety of complex business situations. He co-founded private equity firm Insight Equity in 2002 with his business partner, Ted Beneski and raised over $1.5 billion in equity capital across four funds. In 2023, he departed Insight in order to focus on his own investments with new capabilities to support industrial startups, life sciences, and other areas of venture capital and special situations. Victor received his bachelor's degree from Stanford University, a Master's Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received an MBA from Harvard Business School where he graduated as a Baker Scholar. Additionally, Victor served 20 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve as an intelligence and targeting officer, retiring in 2013 as a Commander. In 2017, Victor completed the “Explorer's Grand Slam” which requires climbing the highest peak on all seven of the world's continents including Mt. Everest and skiing at least 100 kilometers to the North and South Poles. He piloted the first repeated dives to the ocean's deepest point, Challenger Deep, in the Pacific's Mariana Trench - now fifteen times, and in August 2019 became the first person to visit “The Five Deeps,” the deepest point in all five of the world's oceans. Victor has now personally explored the bottom of seventeen deep ocean trenches and has made three dives to the Titanic including the only solo dive ever made there. He and his team also discovered and surveyed the two deepest shipwrecks in the world: the USS Johnston in 2021 and the deepest, the USS Samuel B. Roberts at 22,600 feet, in 2022. In 2025, the US Navy announced that T-AGOS 26, a new ocean surveillance vessel of the Explorer class, would be named after him. He is also a commercially rated, multi-engine jet, glider, seaplane, and helicopter pilot, a certified submersible test pilot, and recently flew into space on Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket, becoming the first person in history to climb Mount Everest, dive to the bottom of the ocean, and visit space. A year ago, two dire wolf puppies were born — the first ones in more than 10,000 years. Matt James, chief animal officer for Colossal Biosciences, joins host Krys Boyd to talk about the company's success bringing back the dire wolf in what it calls a de-extinction process, why he feels inaction on conservation outweighs the risk of Colossal's work, and plans the company has to bring back the wooly mammoth and other long-extinct animals. Scientists these days are serious about bringing animals extinct millions of years ago back to life. They even have a list of candidates, which includes the woolly mammoth, dodo, mastodon, and Tasmanian tiger. However, the animals you're about to see are not desirable and will not be loved by humans. Those scary monsters from the past won't do anyone any good. Learn more about your ad choices. Sir Peter Jackson got everyone talking with his plans to bring back the moa (in in partnership with the Ngai Tahu Research Centre at Canterbury University and Canterbury Museum). But he's not the first to want to resurrect the past, earlier this year Texas company Colossal Biosciences announced it had successfully brought back 3 dire wolf cubs after 10 thousand years of extinction. Jesse talks to a member of the Colossal team, Dr Andrew Pask.
Did you know Native Americans once shared the land with some truly wild creatures that are now extinct?
A company in Texas says it has brought back an animal called the dire wolf from extinction, but it's raising some questions among the scientific community. Bioethicist Francoise Baylis offers her analysis.
The US company Colossal claim to have brought back the dire wolf from extinction after 12,000 years through genetic engineering. The three pups, called Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi, are now living in an undisclosed nature preserve, unaware that their existence has made headlines around the world. But Colossal aren't finished yet, they want to continue to “de-extinct” other animals, such as the woolly mammoth. BBC Science Correspondent Victoria Gill explains how the experiment was done. How realistic is “de-extinction”? And are these actually dire wolves?Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: William Lee Adams Producers: Josh Jenkins and Emilia Jansson Editor: Emily Horler

264# Beasts of the Reich | The Nazi Quest to Resurrect Extinct AnimalsDuring World War II, Nazi Germany occupied Ukraine, and Askania-Nova fell under their control. The Nazis were deeply interested in scientific breeding and genetic experiments, particularly the "back-breeding" of extinct species. Some SS officers, influenced by bizarre ideas about "recreating the ancient world," wanted to reverse-engineer extinct megafauna like the aurochs (a giant, wild ancestor of modern cattle) and even prehistoric European horses. One of the key figures involved was Lutz Heck, a German zoologist and director of the Berlin and Munich zoos. He and his brother, Heinz Heck, had been working on a controversial genetic project called the Heck Cattle Project, attempting to breed back the extinct aurochs by selectively mating modern cattle with ancient traits. The Heck brothers also worked on "back-breeding" Tarpan horses, a now-extinct wild horse species, using Przewalski's horses and other breeds.

A woolly mammoth by 2028.That's the bold claim from US company Colossal Biosciences, who say research is under way that will make this possible. But even if we have the technology to bring back a long dead species, should we? We hear the arguments for and against de-extinction.Also this week, what will Europa Clipper find when it heads to one of Jupiter's icy moons and how to win a Nobel Prize. Presenter: Marnie Chesterton Producers: Ella Hubber, Sophie Ormiston & Gerry Holt Editor: Martin Smith Production Co-ordinator: Andrew Rhys Lewis BBC Inside Science is produced in partnership with the Open University.
Do you know that scientists are almost ready to bring back some species that have been long gone? A T-Rex and other dangerous creatures aren't on the VIP list, so we won't see them in the not-so-distant future. But some of our most beloved characters from the Ice Age movies can be brought back to life! Instead of using the controversial term “cloning,” scientists prefer to say “make un-extinct.” To-may-to, to-mah-to, the idea is the same. An animal that died out thousands of years ago can't be brought back to life unless it's cloned. And therein lies the problem. For successful cloning, scientists need to have almost completely undamaged animal DNA. That's why some species are more likely to be resurrected than others. More than one in five species on the planet today face extinction, and that's predicted to rise to 50% by the end of the century unless we do something about it. But what if I told you extinction isn't as permanent as you think? Thanks to the wonders of science, we might even be able to turn back the hands of time by reviving some long-lost species. Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. We know what they looked like, what they ate, how they hunted. But do we know what they sounded like? For example, just imagine how loudly the Meg growled, as it was really huge! What about some ancient birds? Did they sound similar to some farm birds, like duck and geese? Scientists actually found out how some of the ancient creatures sounded. In this video we're gonna explore which sounds they could produce. We're gonna find out why Tyrannosaurus Rex's scream was similar to birds, not mammals. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

DUI is back for another round of crazy stories about churches that go on ayahuasca (eye-uh-wah-ska) trips together, chick-fil-a's cauliflower sandwich and a vaccine to keep us safe from the Last of Us type fungal infections. Plus Jeremy tells us what he thinks about the "revival" happening at Asbury university. And we each pick one animal we'd bring back from extinction. Stay Uninspired!
Science writer Heather Zeiger unpacks how we choose to use our available resources to protect or not protect endangered species and the many layers behind how a catastrophic earthquake forms. Ericka Andersen, author of "Leaving Cloud 9," shares about having the needed humility and patience to be with others who are struggling, no matter what comes.
