In today's message, Pastor Mateo reminds us that if we really believe God is a good Gift-Giver, we'll actually want to receive the gifts He gives—because they're meant to bring us joy, help us connect with Him, and build each other up.

God gives us spiritual gifts. Each one is unique and special. In this message, Pastor Aaron Kennedy shares the value of our individual gifts as we work together to further the Kingdom of God.

Ashley is known to be a good gift giver but there are times she can go a little overboard...
“Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.” (James 4:17 NLT) Name a reason you might not use a gift that someone gave you. (You can imagine that you’re playing Family Feud, if it helps you think better.) Maybe the gift isn’t practical—you have no use for it. Maybe it’s not your style or size. Maybe you think you don’t deserve it. Maybe you don’t have a good relationship with the gift giver. Now name a reason you might not use a gift that God gave you. That’s a harder one, isn’t it? It’s not a theoretical exercise. God has given you a gift. The apostle Peter wrote, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10 NLT). Since God is the One who gave it, your gift is perfectly practical. And since He created and knows everything about you, it’s exactly your size and style. It’s true you don’t deserve it—but then again, none of us deserves any good thing from God. He gives because He’s merciful and gracious. And if you want to enjoy a healthy relationship with your Gift Giver, you’ll learn how to maximize your gift. If that’s not motivation enough, there’s always James’ words in James 4:17: “Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.” There are countless people who will benefit from your putting your spiritual gift to work. If you choose to ignore your gift, you’re choosing to ignore them. You wouldn’t dream of neglecting your spouse or your family members or the people closest to you. And you should carry that same attitude toward the people in your church. Romans 12:4–5 says, “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other” (NLT). Christianity is not an individual pursuit. Everyone who trusts Christ becomes a member of His body. Biology teaches us that each part of the human body plays an important role. Your eyes, ears, fingers, toes, and internal organs all perform vital functions. God’s Word teaches us that each member of Christ’s body plays an important role. Your role is determined by the spiritual gift God has given you. In 1 Corinthians 12:18, the apostle Paul says, “But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it” (NLT). One verse earlier, he asks, “If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?” (NLT). His point is that God has a plan for His people to use their individual gifts to benefit the church, the body of Christ. He helps mesh believers’ different gifts so that they work together as one. The takeaway is that we all have a part to play in the body of Christ. God has seen to that. If God has given you a gift, it’s irresponsible to not use it. Look at the words of James 4:17 again. And then ask God to show you what your supernatural gift is so that you can begin to use it. Reflection question: How can you use the gift God has given you in your church community? We have a tendency to forget. We who have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ and adopted into his family and reconciled into his fellowship – if we are not careful, can forget what we've been saved from. So, God, in his mercy, places us in the refiner's fire from time to time. He allows us to experience pain and loss and fear – so that we might see clearly everything of ourselves that is not in Him. And this is when we are able to get down to the truth of the matter. When is a gift not a gift? Maybe it was given with a sense of obligation; the giver felt a gift was necessary or expected. Or maybe it felt more like manipulation, as though the giver was more interested in getting something from you than for you. These situations are unfortunate at best. When they carry over into our relationship with God, they can be tragic. In today's addendum to the Advent season, we'll see how to set aside guilt and entitlement in our relationship with our Heavenly Father and Gift Giver, and replace them with joy and gratitude that ends up being more enjoyable and productive.

God gives us the most unbreakable, precious gift: His love. And we know the depth of his love because of the depth of his sacrifice: He gave us his one and only Son, even when we did not love him. We don't deserve his love, nor can we earn his love; God gives us his love simply out of his grace. All we have to do is receive his love.

Just as Israel was full of worry and anxiety under the oppression of Rome, we experience the oppression of worry and anxiety in our world today. It's no wonder that one of the greatest gifts God has given us is peace. Jesus is not just the Prince of Peace, nor does He keep peace to Himself as a possession. Rather, in His grace, Jesus has given us HIS PEACE by the power of the Holy Spirit. We can have His peace as a gift right now by just receiving it.

Spiritual gifts are given to us by God through the Holy Spirit so that we can serve Him and others. Understanding how and why these gifts are given helps us better understand the One who gives us these gifts.
The following episode is a live recorded sermon from the Sunday gathering at The Heights Church Denver on 08/18/24 The Spirit Gives Gifts: 1 Corinthians 12 | Holy Spirit Corbin Hobbs The Holy Spirit has famously been called “the forgotten God.” Christians give a lot of attention to the Father who pursues and loves his prodigal children. We, of course, love Jesus who came and accomplished our salvation through a cross and resurrection. But when it comes to the Spirit many Christians are at a loss. The Spirit feels like the proverbial “third-wheel” on the trinitarian date. And much of this is because of the lack of good teaching on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. But without the Holy Spirit, we cannot be adopted into the Fathers family or receive the forgiveness for our sins that Jesus accomplished on the cross. In the words of Father Ignatius Hazim, “Without the Holy Spirit, God is distant, Christ is in the past, the Gospel is a dead letter, the Church is simply an organization, authority is always domination, mission is propaganda, worship is the summoning of spirits, and Christian action is the morality of slaves.” We need the Holy Spirit. 07/28/24 - John 16:5-15 - It is Better 08/04 - John 3 - Are You Born Again? 08/11 - Galatians 5 - How to Change 08/18 - 1 Corinthians 12 - Gift-Giver 09/01 - Acts 1-2 - Empowerer for Mission For more information about The Heights Church, or to contact us, visit our website at TheHeightsDenver.com

Message Scripture - 1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-7
Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Working Without IdolatryDevotional: 4 of 4Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. (1 John 5:21)We've seen a few helpful definitions of idolatry throughout this series. Let me offer my own: An idol is anything you can't live without. It's anything other than God that functions as your deepest source of joy.And so, if we want to keep our work from becoming an idol, we would be wise to voluntarily practice self-denial—resting from the good gift of work as a means of proving to ourselves that God is the only thing we ultimately need.Pastor Joe Rigney whose book Strangely Bright inspired me to write this devotional series says this about self-denial: “Biblical self-denial is the voluntary giving up of good things for the sake of better things…[it] keeps our legitimate love of earthly things [like work] in check. We enjoy them when we have them. But we don't covet and crave them….We can voluntarily give them up for the sake of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord.”That brings us to our fourth and final principle for enjoying our work without turning it into an idol. Principle #4: Limit your labor regularly. How? Here are two ideas for practicing this principle.First, take a full day off once a week. AKA Sabbath. While this ancient rhythm is not commanded under the New Covenant, it still stands as wisdom. Sabbath is one way to once a week declare that you have joy apart from the gift of work—a way of loving and worshiping God apart from your vocation.Second, choose the Word before work, rather than work before the Word. According to a 2016 study from Deloitte more than half of Americans check their phones within five minutes of waking up. Be counter-cultural here. Before you check email or the day's news, commit to time in God's Word. Limiting your labor in this way is a powerful way of saying, “As good as your gift of work is, Lord, I choose You before all things.”My goal with this series has been to provide us with a biblical and practical framework for enjoying our work without turning it into an idol. Here's a summary of the four principles we explored (which just so happen to spell out IDOL for those who love memorable acronyms): Insist that Jesus is better than your work or any other created thingDelight in your work freely and fully as a means of better appreciating the “betterness” of JesusOffer your talents generously in service of others Limit your labor regularly via self-denying rhythms of restYour work is a good thing, believer. But only God is the ultimate good. Enjoy his good gifts today, and as you do, I pray you will delight in the Gift-Giver all the more!
Sermon Resources: 1. “The first thing about America that strikes observation is an innumerable multitude of men incessantly endeavoring to obtain the petty and paltry pleasures with which they glut their lives. Each of them, living apart, is a stranger to the fate of the rest; his children and his private friends constitute to him the whole of mankind. As for the rest of his fellow citizens, he touches them, but he does not feel them.” -Alexis de Tocqueville, "Democracy in America" 2. “We have been led to believe that the self is sacred. Just as in an earlier time it was thought never fitting to deny God, now it seems never right to deny oneself.” -Robert Bellah, "Habits of the Heart" 3. “We've forgotten we belong to one another.” -Mother Teresa 4. "A Hidden Life," film directed by Terrance Malick 5. “The most important thing in your life is not what you do. It is who you become.” -Dallas Willard 6. “We often seek to find ourselves somehow in the work of making others happy. Therefore we throw ourselves into the work. As a result we get out of the work all that we put into it: our own confusion, disintegration, and unhappiness. It is useless to try to make peace with ourselves by being pleased with everything we have done. In order to settle down in the quiet of our own being we must learn to be detached from the results of our own activity. We must withdraw ourselves, to some extent, from effects that are beyond our control and be content with the good will and the work that are the quiet expression of our inner life. We must be content to live without watching ourselves live, to work without expecting an immediate reward, to love without an instantaneous satisfaction, and to exist without any special recognition.” -Thomas Merton, "No Man Is An Island"
The church is comprised of many disparate parts and yet called to function together as one body. When each member does its part, we grow up into the fullness of what God is creating us to be. What is your part? Sermon outline:I. The Gift GiverII. The Gifts He GivesIII. The Goal of the GiftsSermon Discussion Questions:1. What stuck out to you most from the sermon about the variety of spiritual gifts given to the church? How have you seen different gifts at work within our church body?2. The gifts are given to equip the saints for ministry and build up the body of Christ. What avenues for ministry and service are you currently involved in or feel equipped to get involved in?3. Why is it important that we strive for maturity and not remain spiritual “children” easily swayed by false teachings or deceitful schemes? How can we grow in discernment?4. Paul writes that we are to “speak the truth in love.” Why is maintaining both truth and love crucial? How do you tend to prioritize one over the other personally?5. What is your attitude towards the role and responsibilities God has given you within the church? How can we foster an appropriate eagerness to do our part in the body of Christ?
Psalm 68
Ten-year-old Zeke and his mum want your help to track down a Japanese football fan who gave him a much loved football shirt. Also: the woman who broke eleven running records in six days, the elephant seals tracking climate change, and some very rare baby frogs.
Does the Holy Spirit still empower believers to heal, speak in tongues, perform miracles, and prophesy? This week I've been a bit under the weather, so I'm bringing you an older episode from 2021, all about how to really prepare for Christmas. In this giving season, let's tune our hearts to how God is calling us to live these hope-peace-joy-love weeks well and to be present with our sisters and brothers with whatever we have. If you'd like to connect with me, find me on Instagram, at my website, or on Substack. If you'd like to help support this podcast financially, there's a way to do just that on my page at buymeacoffee.com! Thanks for sharing, subscribing, rating, and reviewing, as this helps our community to grow. Thanks as always to my friend, Peter Vaughan-Vail, for providing the beautiful harp music you hear in this and every episode. Here are some resources I hope will help you to engage with this week's topic in a deeper way for yourself: In this season, our minds turn toward giving, and in this episode we'll talk about the what, where, when, how, and why we give as people of faith. Let's be intentional to give well this year in a way that benefits the recipients of our giving as well as ourselves. 1. As promised, "Christmas Morning" from Saturday Night Live, 2020 2. Song: Simple Gifts, Traditional - Yo-Yo Ma 3. Song: Simple Gifts from Appalachian Spring - Aaron Copland, John Williams, Boston Pops Orchestra 4. Look at (and research using a service such as Charity Navigator) charities that resonate with your talent, interest, and resources and give to them directly, as gifts, or in honor of loved ones. If you're local to me - My Brother's Keeper is a good place to give at this time of year and year-round. 5. A short piece I wrote in 2015 about listening to our inner voice to direct our giving, divine reciprocity, and about finding God in a grocery store (which I do all the time): Pineapples, Orange Soda, Chicken Salad 6. All about St. Nicholas, Gift Giver, from St. Nicholas Center 7. Song: Give a Little Bit, by Supertramp (How does knowing we're all "on our way back home" affect how you give?) 8. Journal prompts: As I look back on my life, how does my own lived experience inform how and to whom I give? If I've suffered hardship (as we all have), how can I turn that experience for the good by investing in and helping my community in a specific way? How can I care for myself well in this season so that my giving comes from a place of health and not depletion this year? What am I good at? What do I have? What do I know? How could I use these things to make the life of someone else better? 9. Video: The Joy of Giving: effects of giving on our brains, by Big Think 10: Song: In the Bleak Midwinter - Worcester Cathedral Choir, Christina Rossetti, Gustav Holst
