Does weaving storytelling into your work feel like a lot? Like a heavy lift, you don't always have time or energy for? What if I told you there's a shortcut? A storytelling tool that's faster, flexible, and just as powerful in most situations? Spoiler alert: it's the analogy. In this episode of Reframe to Create, we're building your Analogy Bank. I can become your go-to collection of comparisons, metaphors, and visual word-pictures that help you easily explain complex ideas and connect with your audience instantly. Analogies are the bridge. They're the glasses and flashlight you whip out in that dim restaurant so you can finally read the menu. (Can anyone relate?)
Sure, you can tell your story. But what happens when you're not in the room? Are people sharing a story about you that doesn't quite fit? I bet you can see it now. There's someone who believes in you. They love what you create. They want to advocate for you. But when the moment comes to share your story? They fumble. They either say nothing… or say the wrong thing. Now you're getting opportunities that sound nothing like you—or worse, no opportunities at all. Yikes! In this episode, I show you how to fix that. I walk you through how to equip your biggest fans to tell your story in the right way, to the right people, in the right rooms. The key? A simple tool called the ABT Framework (And, But, Therefore)—which I first learned from Park Howell back in Episode 101. When you use it well, your personal brand doesn't just sit quietly waiting for the next introduction—it starts working for you, everywhere.
Creating isn't just about what you make…it's about who you become. We're back with the brilliant Nana Brew-Hammond for her second visit to Reframe to Create, and this time, it's a full-circle moment. In Episode 21, Nana shared “How to Stay Committed to an Imperfect Creating Journey.” And in this episode, we see how that commitment has blossomed. Nana walks us through the very different experiences she had while writing her two latest books: ✨ Blue– a children's picture book that dives into the rich history of a single color ✨ My Parents' Marriage – an adult novel that explores the complex dynamics of family, love, and identity. The process of creating each of these works taught Nana different things. And in this conversation, she shares two key lessons she learned along the way. Lessons about transformation, flexibility, and what it really means to grow alongside your work. Honestly? This conversation lit something in me. It reminded me that no matter how smooth or bumpy the road, the journey itself is doing something deep and lasting in us. If you want to experience the joy and power of Nana's work, you can check out both books at nanabrewhammond.com. You'll be glad you did. About my guest: Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond is an American-Ghanaian writer of novels, short stories and a poet. In 2014 she was chosen as one of 39 of Sub-Saharan Africa's most promising writers under the age of 40, showcased in the Africa39 project. Nana has been featured on MSNBC, NY1, SaharaTV, ARISE TV, and has been published in Ebony Magazine. Her latest novel for adult readers, My Parents' Marriage, was featured in The New York Times Book Review's July 7, 2024 “...Also Out Now” column, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Booklist, and more. The author Melissa Rivero called it “a propulsive read that will take hold of you with its honesty, determination, and heart,” while the author Vanessa Walters described it as “an arrestingly evovative story…which dismantles immigrant clichés. Her children's picture book BLUE: A history of the Color as Deep as the Sea and as Wide as the Sky, illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Daniel Minter, was named among the best of 2022 by NPR, New York Public Library, Chicago Public Library, Kirkus Reviews, The Center for the Study of Multicultural Literature, Bank Street College of Education, and more. BLUE is on the 2023-2024 Texas Bluebonnet Master List; it has been honored with the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award® recognizing excellence in writing of non-fiction for children; and it is an NAACP Image Award Nominee for Outstanding Literature for Chidlren. It was named to the American Libary Association's 2023 Notable Children's Books and nominated for a 2025 Georgia Chidlren's Book Award. Brew-Hammond also wrote the young adult novel Powder Necklace, which Publishers Weekly called “a winning debut”, and she edited RELATIONS: An Anthology of African and Diaspora Voices. Kirkus Reviews called the anthology “smart, generous…a true gift” in its starred review. Nana is also co-founder of Exit 14, a made in Ghana lifestyle line that has been featured in Vogue. You've probably heard a lot of people telling you that you need a personal brand but very few are showing you “how” you can build or strengthen one. It's all well and good to say you need a thing but how do you do it?
In this episode, we explore the world of health coaching with Kathleen Ferguson, a seasoned HALO industry veteran dedicated to transforming lives through fitness and wellness. Pete and Kathleen chat about her new venture, Coach 360, which aims to revolutionize the career landscape for health and wellness coaches. She shares her career path from trainer to business owner, and how she's addressing the industry's pressing issue of high turnover rates by supporting coaches in building sustainable and impactful careers. Also mentioned is the rise of hybrid fitness professionals, the importance of aligning personal goals with organizational culture, and creating a vibrant ecosystem for coaches to thrive. Whether you're a coach, studio owner, or merely curious about the future of health and wellness, this episode is a must-listen! "A type of 'hybrid' fitness professional is on the rise," Ferguson states. "What I'm seeing more of is the brick and mortar studio locations are actually encouraging this and saying, listen. . . you're a rock star instructor.' I know that if you're doing, for example, macro-counting coach groups with a community of women in the city, that you're going to bring them in to work out here." Key themes discussed Coach Churn: High turnover among fitness coaches affecting industry. Niche Staffing: Demand for specialized platforms in health and wellness. Hybrid Coaches: Balancing independent and club-based work. Business of Coaching: Supporting coaches' careers and development. Holistic Health: Emphasis on a comprehensive approach to coaching. Storytelling: Importance of brands conveying their unique narratives. Community Building: Creating a supportive ecosystem for coaches. A few key takeaways: 1. Focus on Empowering Coaches: Kathleen is passionate about creating a platform that supports health, fitness, and wellness coaches in building sustainable and impactful careers. She emphasizes the need for a career path rather than just a temporary role in the industry. 2. Addressing High Turnover: Pete and Kathleen address the significant issue of high turnover rates in fitness studios and gyms, which is currently around 80%. A big part of Coach 360's mission is to try to decrease this by offering coaches the resources and support they need to find the right roles and grow in their careers. 3. Hybrid Coaching Models: There's a growing trend of "hybrid" health professionals who work both independently and within fitness facilities. Coach 360 aims to support these professionals by connecting them to roles and providing them with business guidance to manage their dual careers effectively. 4. Personalized Staffing Solutions: Kathleen also discusses how niche staffing platforms, like Coach 360, provide more personalized and effective solutions for finding the right talent in the health and wellness industry, as opposed to more generic job platforms. 5. Community and Storytelling: Coach 360 not only focuses on job placement but also on creating a community where coaches and studios can share stories. This helps professionals connect better with potential employers, members, and clients by showcasing who they are beyond just their qualifications. https://michellecutler.com/In this episode, Steve Harper and Michelle Cutler, a screenwriter and storytelling coach, unpack the causes of writer's block—and why it's rarely about laziness. They explore how perfectionism, early criticism, and fear of failure can interrupt the writing process long before a single word hits the page. Cutler offers practical, compassionate tools for getting unstuck, emphasizing that writer's block often signals a deeper disconnection—from self, from story, or from purpose. Together, they discuss the role of deadlines, the temptation to multitask, and why understanding the narrative you're trying to tell—whether for a brand or a memoir—is more powerful than relying on AI to fill in the blanks. https://michellecutler.com/In this episode, Steve Harper and Michelle Cutler, a storytelling coach and screenwriter, explore the enduring impact of the “Rule of 3” in storytelling, communication, and human dynamics. They unpack why groups of three—whether in comedy, structure, or social settings—feel complete, memorable, and emotionally resonant. Cutler shares insights from film, literature, and childhood friendships to show how triads create rhythm, tension, and meaning. She reflects on a recent reunion with two childhood friends, revealing how early insecurities around being the “third wheel” gave way to deeper connection and trust. Harper brings in examples from personal experience and cultural references like Nikola Tesla's 3-6-9 theory to underscore the universal pull of the number three. Together, they offer a lively, thoughtful look at how threes show up in both our creative and everyday lives—balancing structure and surprise, logic and emotion. Hello to you listening in Eugene, Oregon!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with your host, Diane Wyzga. In various conversations lately I've been talking about being broken or, at least being cracked. We are cracked. We complicate being cracked by creating inner stories about our worthiness while trying to ignore our pain and hide our flaws. Maybe it's true and maybe it isn't but there once was a woman who carried water from the river to her hut. Her pot was cracked while her neighbors had perfect pots. Each looked at the other with envy or disdain. Until one day the woman noticed that along the path she walked with her cracked pot flowers had sprung up from the watering the seeds received every day.Story Prompt: Without you being just the way you are, flowers of strength, courage and wisdom would not have bloomed where you are walking. Flaws and weaknesses are natural parts of life. Where is the beauty in your flaws? Write that story! Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, (including Android, Amazon Music, Audible & Pandora Radio) and join us next time! Does it feel like everyone around you is moving fast and breaking things? We live in a hustle culture where many have the “if it's bigger, faster, and flashier, then it's always better” mentality. Only in recent years have I begun to see a broader cultural shift toward slower and more intentional living. I can personally attest that it's the “winning” way. During these first 100 episodes of the podcast, I've learned to embrace the way of the turtle. I've learned to resist the urge to compare and instead delight fully in my own journey. A journey that was slow. A journey that was about taking “turtle steps” and even a bit of a pause along the way. And in this journey, I've learned 3 important things that I know you'll appreciate, especially if the loud roar of others zooming by is deafening. If you want to try the slow and steady way and see how it can make your personal and professional life more of what you really want, then listen in for the ways I've learned that: Creating because it matters is enough. Even if what you create is small. The power of the pause to rejuvenate your creative spark Why consistency beats perfection every time Getting to 100 episodes has been a goal of mine from the beginning. And I'm grateful to you for coming along with me. What's been your slow and steady win? https://michellecutler.com/The Art of Analogies in StorytellingSteve Harper and storytelling coach Michelle Tamara Cutler explore the power of analogies and metaphors in communication, breaking down how they shape understanding and engagement. Michelle uses the analogy of a restaurant to illustrate the importance of website presentation and user experience, emphasizing that a website is like a front-of-house—its design, clarity, and accessibility determine whether visitors stay or leave. She expands this idea further, comparing social media platforms to different spaces within the restaurant: Instagram as the cocktail bar, LinkedIn as the business lounge, and a Substack or blog as a cozy reading nook. Even the often-overlooked aspects of a business, like customer service and communication, function like a restaurant's bathrooms—if they're neglected, people will question the quality of the entire establishment. Hello to you listening around the world!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey with your host Diane Wyzga.About a block from my library or a block from the post office sits a house on a corner. Propped against this house I saw a very large sheet of plywood. Spray-painted in large black letters were these words: Kill Lawyers - Not Cops. Putting aside any 1st Amendment right of free speech arguments or the notion that many folks don't like lawyers until they need one, I have a question: When and how did we arrive at this place? When and how did we depart from human kindness, civility, and manners? I've often spoken to the man who lives in this house as I passed by on my walk, admired his sunflowers, commented on the weather. I plan to walk up to his door and say, “I am a lawyer. Are you going to kill me? Or do you wish someone would?” I want to hear how he arrived at his position. And then perhaps get him to put away his larger-than-life sign before some yahoo takes him up on the dare.Practical Tip: Be of speech a little more careful than anything else today, tomorrow, and forever. https://michellecutler.com/Dreams and the Stories They Tell Steve Harper interviews Michelle Tamara Cutler, a storytelling coach and screenwriter, about the fascinating intersection of dreams and storytelling. Cutler explores how dreams act as a gateway to the subconscious, offering insight, creative inspiration, and emotional processing. She reflects on her past practice of keeping a dream journal, the cinematic nature of some of her dreams, and the connection between dreams and her work in film and nonfiction. The conversation delves into meditation, David Lynch's dream-influenced storytelling, and the balance between embracing absurdity and finding meaning in dreams. Cutler also discusses practical ways writers can harness their dreams to enhance storytelling, whether through private journaling or integrating dreamlike elements into their work. They highlight the power of reframing these narratives to create new perspectives and opportunities. Cutler shares personal anecdotes, such as completing a marathon despite identifying since childhood as a non-athlete to illustrate the power of reframing limiting narratives. Harper contributes a childhood memory of being labeled an underachiever, discussing how that belief influenced his life until he challenged it. Cutler provides practical tools, including exercises like "Flip the Script" and "Name the Narrator," to help clients rewrite negative inner stories into empowering ones. Are you ready for your next transition as you pivot into something new? What if your next job or contract was you getting paid to be you? What would that look like? What would that feel like? Absolutely amazing right? But this sort of thing doesn't just happen. You have to make it happen. And getting paid to be you is all about becoming the type of person who gets paid to be you. That's because you can only go as far as who you are and before your transition you must transform. That takes a narrative identity shift. And those only come by changing the stories you tell about yourself and what you create. It takes getting (re) storied. This episode is all about what it takes to do this so you can get paid to be you. Because isn't it time you stopped getting paid to be everyone else and finally got paid to be you? Your work is not your job or career. Your work is what you create. You get this. But what if you're still searching for the thing that's yours which you create? Or if you've stumbled upon it, what if that thing isn't like everyone else's? While everyone else is creating tangible things that people can taste and touch, yours can't be. What then? I want you to know you're not alone in this. Creating isn't always tangible. Some people do create tangible things. But many more create intangible experiences. And that's great news. It means the world of creating is much bigger and wider than you might have thought. My guest on today's episode can tell you all about this because Katie MacDonald has done something truly remarkable. She's taken what she's heard here on Reframe to Create and done the deep work of integrating it into her understanding of herself and her work. She's let it give her a reframe and the result has been a powerful discovery of what she uniquely brings to the table. And her unique contribution might be like yours--something intangible. Learning this has changed not just how she shows up on her job but how she shows up in all of her life. We also talk about how your unique work doesn't require that you go on a long journey to find it because you're already doing it in some way today. Listen in because you might discover that you've already been doing the thing you've been searching to find. About my guest: Katie MacDonald is a public health professional, passionate about improving lives through increased access to quality health products and services. She has worked in health markets around the world to introduce new health commodities, promote policy change and build public private partnerships. Katie discovered her love for public health as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali and since then has lived and worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Bangladesh. Katie enjoys making connections with people around the world and in her own neighborhood of Columbia Heights in Washington, DC through scuba diving, cooking, reading and running. Today, I interview Katherine Kennedy, who grew up feeling the need to appear like everything was perfect, avoiding hard conversations and hiding behind a mask. As the youngest in her family, she was often seen as the one who brought fun and laughter, but underneath, she struggled to express her true emotions. This sense of needing to present a perfect life, while holding in difficult feelings, left her disconnected from her authentic voice. Her turning point came when she started working with students who were the first in their families to go to college. Listening to their stories of struggle and resilience helped her recognize her own need to speak her truth. Over time, Katherine learned to have deeper conversations with her family, especially her father, which brought them closer and allowed her to release the secrets she had held for so long. Now, Katherine guides others in finding their voices through storytelling workshops and retreats. She believes that finding your voice is a muscle that can be built over time, and she creates spaces for people to share their stories, just as she learned to do, fostering deeper connections and personal growth.__________________Katherine has spent over 30 years helping thousands of people share their stories with authenticity and confidence. Her career highlights include working with Teach for America and playing a key role in expanding the youth leadership program Summer Search into a national nonprofit. As a mentor, fundraiser, and Executive Director, she has dedicated her career to empowering others to express their true selves.Katherine is also a skilled storytelling coach, guiding individuals in various settings to articulate their personal stories—whether through public speaking, writing, or meaningful conversations. In 2023, she published her first book, Speaking to What Matters: My Story of Learning How to Share What's Inside, which reflects her passion for the transformative power of storytelling.Living in San Francisco with her family, Katherine continues her mission to help people connect deeply with themselves and others through the art of storytelling.__________________Find Katherine here:Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/katherinekennedysf/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/speakingtowhatmatters/Free Download - A Guide to Speaking to What Matters https://katherinekennedysf.com/a-guide-to-speaking-to-what-matters/ Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. How could things turn out well? I turn to a favorite scene from the movie, Shakespeare in Love. Philip Henslowe is the promoter behind Shakespeare's newest play. If the play opens as planned Henslowe can pay what's owed; but The Rose Theatre is currently closed because of the plague. Philip Henslowe: Mr. Fennyman, allow me to explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.Hugh Fennyman: So what do we do?Philip Henslowe: Nothing.
