In this episode, Madison and Chris dive horn-first into the folklore of Krampus—the clawed, chain-rattling counterpart to St. Nicholas who terrorizes naughty kids across the Alpine regions.Chris kicks things off with his real-life Krampusnacht memories from Amberg, Germany—complete with a snarling beast on a chain, Pope-style St. Nick, and the threat of being dragged into the woods at midnight. From there, we unravel how Krampus went from pagan winter monster to “Santa's bad cop,” why there are actually many Krampi (including lady Krampus variants), and how he got tangled up in Catholicism, bans, propaganda pamphlets, and violent Krampus runs that still send people to the ER.Madison breaks down:Krampus's origins in Alpine and pagan winter loreHis toolkit: birch switches, chains, baskets for kidnapping, and moreHow Krampusnacht works (boots, candy, birch-stick warnings, and a lot of schnapps)The postcards that turned him into a Christmas iconRare Krampus facts: the switch ledger, faceless Krampus, the glutton-eating adult version, and a boot-and-tallow summoning ritualWe also tease other winter monsters like Grýla, the Yule Lads, La Befana, and more unhinged holiday creatures that might get their own episodes if you ask for them loudly enough.MEET KRAMPUS IN SAVANNAHKrampus will be at the Savannah Paranormal Museum on December 6th, noon–4 p.m.Museum ticket + selfie: $5Museum ticket + pro photo: $10 totalJust want Krampus pics, no museum: $25 for selfie + pro photo bundleCome see us, grab a photo, and make some questionable holiday memories.NEW SHOW: THE OTHER SIDE SHOWIf you love “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and horror, our horror/paranormal improv show The Other Side Show premieres December 9th, and we'll be live-streaming the first two episodes exclusively for Parajunkies.TELL US BELOWWhich winter monster should we cover next—Grýla, the Yule Cat, La Befana, or another Christmas cryptid? You know Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen.  Santa, and Frosty, and Rudolph, and Dickens.  But do you know? The Alluring Dark Spirits of old?   In this episode, you can meet three of the Dark Spirits of the Christmas with my guest Tania Yager. Tania is the author of the book The Allure of the Dark Spirits (which will be available Dec. 5, 2025 on Lulu). We talk about the process of getting the book written and about the three topics of the book: Krampus, La Befana, and the Mari Lwyd. The book "is a whimsical, bombastic, and deeply heartfelt journey into the shadowy magic of winter folklore. Part memoir, part shamanic exploration, and part folklore celebration, Yager invites readers to walk beside her as she meets the Alpine Krampus in the snowy streets of Munich, seeks out the Italian witch La Befana, and revisits her own bittersweet ties to Wales through the ghostly Mari Lwyd." We had a great discussion (one of the longer I've done) talking about her journey and about the spirits.  The book will be available for order on Dec. 5, 2025 (Krampusnacht) in time for the holiday season. A gift for yourself and that special friend in your life who also enjoys the spirits of winter.  This is a longer episode, so here is a bit of a show flow: 0:00:00 Introduction and background of Tania and developing the book 0:35:28 Frau Perchta/Frau Holle 0:47:33 Krampus 1:02:00 La Befana 1:11:20 Mari Lwyd - Mari Beast 1:37:56 New Projects, closing   Yager is a multifaceted visual/ performance artist, writer, holistic educator, and shamanic practitioner. In this special 200th episode, Kimberly and Tommaso celebrate a milestone while discussing their upcoming move to Italy. They share insights into Italian holiday traditions and meals, offering a look at how these differ from American celebrations. Key Points: The Podcast's Journey: Kimberly and Tommaso il Favoloso reflect on 200 episodes of their podcast which they started during COVID.. Their podcast's goal has always been to share their love of Italy and offer travel insights. Future plans include returning to a weekly episode schedule after their move to Italy. Thanksgiving in America vs. Holidays in Italy: Kimberly describes the traditional American Thanksgiving meal, which has remained largely unchanged for 400 years. Tommaso shares his enjoyment of the Thanksgiving meal. The conversation shifts to Italian holiday meals, highlighting their variety and cultural significance. Visiting Italy during a holiday offers a chance to experience unique traditions and less crowded destinations. Italian Christmas Eve (La Vigilia): Most Europeans celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve with their main meal. The traditional Christmas Eve meal in Italy is seafood, a “lean day” without meat. Italian Christmas Eve dinner begins early with aperitivo, followed by antipasti (no meat), pasta or risotto and fish as the main course. Desserts include panettone, pandoro and torrone. Kimberly recounts loud, lively Christmas Eve dinners in Milan with extended family. Italian Easter (Pasqua): For Easter, Italians eat lamb, not ham. The day starts with Colomba, a dove-shaped, sweeter version of panettone, symbolizing peace and rebirth. Eggs are important, appearing in dishes like torta pasqualina and brodetto pasquale. Artichokes, asparagus, or chicory accompany the lamb. A popular dessert is pastiera napolitana, a creamy, sweet cake from Naples. Other Italian Holidays: Italy celebrates several non-religious holidays, such as Liberation Day and Festa della Repubblica. Religious holidays like Ognissanti on November 1st involves eating Pane de Morti (bread of the dead). New Year's Eve (Capodanno) is a religious holiday focused on symbolic foods for luck and prosperity. Old school Italians eat 12 grapes at midnight for luck in each month of the year. Epifania (Epiphany) on January 6th, marks the end of the Christmas season and includes a fun tradition with La Befana, a kind witch who brings treats. Celebrations for La Befana include a regatta in Venice and a national festival in Urbania Planning Your Trip: Experiencing Italian holidays offers a chance to enjoy different cultural traditions and foods. Agriturismos or small family-run hotels are ideal for experiencing traditional holiday meals. Join us in this episode as we uncover the true essence of Italian holiday traditions, providing a realistic and enriching perspective on what to expect and enjoy.

Daniele's connection to his culture has influenced his professional life as a Creative Director. He now has his own studio named 'Studio Musaicu' and divides his time between Italy and Australia. It was very interesting to hear how Daniele makes it work for him. We also heard about the special children's book Daniele was inspired to write named 'Arrivera La Befana a Fremantle', a bi-lingual story about the Italian folklore legend of La Befana, what we loved most about this story is that it brings an Italian Australian perspective, the book is available for purchase via the link below.Daniele's Instagram:Daniele Foti-Cuzzola (@daniele_foticuzzola) • Instagram photos and videosStudio Musaicu InstagramStudio Musaicu (@studiomusaicu) • Instagram photos and videosLa Befana children's book:Arrivera La Befana A Fremantle?

Alas, this week plague has struck the House of Raven (well, the flu has, at least) and Eleanor is laid-up feeling decidedly unwell. So, we have dipped our beaks into the vault, and pecked out a seasonally-appropriate Patreon Exclusive episode to plug the gap!Originally released last December, we start the episode off with a chat about the common characteristics of 'Snow Queens' or 'Snow Witches', including lots of examples, from Babushka and La Befana to Mother Holda and Gryla, as well as Snow Goddesses like Skadi and Chione. After drawing some common threads together, and discussing some problematic issues with many representations of Snow Queens, it's then onto the main event: Martin's telling of his take on "The Snow Queen" - after which we have a little chat about the story and distinctions made between our version and that of Hans Christian Anderson. We really hope you enjoy it, and fingers-crossed that a) Martin doesn't catch 'the lurg' as well, and b) Eleanor feels well enough to record this week's Magic and Medicines episode about the Zodiac - after which we should be back on track! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Once upon a time, when only candles lit the inside of homes and people traveled on foot or by horse, the family would finish their supper, wash and dry the dishes, and sit down before the hearth to hear a tale. These tales were not only entertaining but also passed down both history and tradition to the next generation. And as the wheel of the year turned, these tales also served to teach the children about holy days and festivals and the Gods and Goddesses who reigned over the changing seasons. In this beautifully illustrated book, Ellen Evert Hopman shares rich stories drawn from traditional folktales, hands-on crafts, and seasonal recipes to help families and classrooms learn about and celebrate traditional holy days and festivals of the sacred earth year. Designed to be read out loud, the stories are complemented with pronunciation guides and translations for foreign words. You will learn of the Cailleach, the ancient Goddess of Winter; La Befana, the Italian new year's witch; Eostre, the Goddess of Spring; Kupalnocka, the Polish feast of wreaths at midsummer; Yule among the Vikings; and many other deities and celebrations. For each story, the author includes hands-on projects special to the holiday--from crafting magical wands and brooms to flower crowns and Brighid's Crosses--as well as seasonal recipes, such as Magical Peppermint Chocolate Tea, Beltaine Bannock, and La Befana Cake, allowing families to enjoy the tastes, smells, and sounds associated with the feast days and celebrations.
