On today's podcast, we are joined by author, podcast host, and homeschool mom Jamie Erickson. We are continuing our series to help us go back to homeschool with more purpose and clarity that we have ever had before! What Jamie and Leslie will discuss today is something we believe all of us want but sometimes seems hard to find because we have to rearrange our thinking to make it happen. We know today your heart will be encouraged as we discuss hygge (HOO-GUH) in our homeschool and creating a Gospel-centered home through the Danish practice of Hygge. Meet the Guest: When she's not curating memories, hoarding vintage books, or playing ringmaster to her circus of five blissfully abnormal kids, Jamie Erickson can be found encouraging and equipping a growing tribe of mothers all across the globe on the Mom to Mom podcast. Jamie is the author of Homeschool Bravely and her newest book, Holy Hygge: Creating a Place for People to Gather and the Gospel to Grow, launching September 6, 2022. Today's episode is brought to you by Trail Life USA. Trail Life is where boys and men thrive! With more than 40,000 members in nearly 900 Troops across all 50 states, homeschool moms and dads are discovering the power of outdoor adventure and badge-based education to engage boys, nurture faith, and awaken a love for learning. Unshackled from the classroom, boys and dads come to life in an environment where faith and understanding grow naturally. Men love the intentional discipleship time carved out with their sons, as together they plan, work, serve, learn, and experience adventure together -- relationships grow, faith becomes real, leadership is learned, and boys grow to become biblically-bold, courageous servant-leaders of faith and character. Learn more at www.TrailLifeUSA.com/ttd Additional Resources: Jamie's book, Holy Hygge: Creating a Place for People to Gather and the Gospel to Grow comes out on September 6th. Anyone who preorders can click HERE to snag a free eGuide called "Holy Hygge All Year Long" that will provide practical ideas to show you how to pair the outward help of hygge with the inward hope of Jesus so that you can make Kingdom connections with your family, friends, and neighbors for the next twelve months. The Gospel - Centered Home - Bob Bochat - 6 - 20 - 2021 by NewBranch
What does it mean for a home to be gospel-centered? How involved should a parent be in the life of their children? Is it the church's or parent's responsibility to nurture and tend to the spiritual health of the children? In this episode we seek to answer, explain, and provide practical advice and counsel on the sensitive issue of parenting and growing a Christ-centered home in today's day and age.
Today on the podcast I got the chance to interview Jami Balmet from YoungWifesGuide.com. It was so good I wanted to get it to you right away so we actually recorded this earlier today! Unlike most of my guests, Jami doesn't have a child with special needs. She is familiar with advocating thought. She had to fight for her own health care when after having 5 children in just about 4 years, her hormones were all out of wack and she needed a provider to listen and help. Would you believe in the midst of all this, she also had her own business and was growing and scaling it? Now today she is healthier and her business has become so big that her husband works full time for the family business as well! She started off blogging and offering her own printables and ebooks etc. This has grown and now this year she'll be hosting the 6th Annual Virtual Homemakers Conference. The theme this year is Crafting a Gospel-Centered and Home and sessions range from the theological to the practical (because if you can't get dinner on the table it's hard to let the gospel into some of the abstract parts of our homemaking.) She does this really crazy thing... that actually isn't so crazy and is kinda my favorite now... She grinds her own grains and bakes all the things. Muffins, waffles, sandwich bread, pasta, tortillas she makes them all from scratch and grinds the grains fresh in her kitchen. I know you're thinking what is she super mom? But I've tried it and it doesn't add any time to the baking process and you get a much much better end result (when you have a recipe meant for freshly milled grains... I've had some fails too. haha) She's gotten so many questions about this that she created a digital course with recipes, how-tos and even breaks down how she does her "baking day" where she makes all the things for the week in just a few hours. - mind. blown. I have this course and a new fancy grain mill on my Christmas list for this year. You've gotta check it out!!Check out Jami's podcast Homemaking foundations episodes #117, #124, and #166. For more about baking with freshly milled grains. Finally, Jami is a READER. I mean she reads so much, so fast. She talks about what she's reading often on her podcast - Homemaking Foundations. We shared our favorite books about integrating the gospel into our practical theology. What does it mean to be a homemaker? How do you define a homemaker? Does homemaker simply mean a stay at home mom or does it encompass so much more? How do I glorify God in my homemaking and what does it mean to be a Gospel-Centered homemaker? These are the questions I try to answer every day in my ministry. And I think once we can begin thinking Biblically about our role as a homemaker, the other pieces in our home start to fall into place. When I'm facing a new day and trying to muster up the energy to get out of bed and start the coffee maker, reviewing the reason behind my homemaking helps so much. Listen to the Podcast: We also recorded this blog post as an audio podcast. If you want to listen in instead of reading, click play below or do a combination of both And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in iTunes. Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. Over the past several years I’ve wrestled with what a homemaker really is. What does it meant to “keep my home?” How do I decide day in and day out what I should be spending my time on? Where do I turn when I feel overwhelmed by it all?? Getting to the roots of what a homemaker is (and really understanding what that means) has time and again given me encouragement. It has freed me up to focus on what is important in life and let go of those insecurities that plague us all. The focus on my blog and in my ministry is Gospel-Centered Homemaking, and so over time, I’ve received a lot of comments from women who feel like they don’t fit in this “homemaker” box. I hear comments from wives who work full time and express that they can’t wait until they stay home full time so they can finally be homemakers. Single women email me and share that “one day” they hope to be homemakers. And I have discussion after discussion with busy, stressed, overwhelmed moms that they just wish they could be “better” homemakers. I want to challenge you to think outside the box a little when it comes to being a homemaker. 1) How do you become a homemaker? I don’t think that a homemaker is something you become, but rather, something that you are. You are a homemaker by definition. You are a homemaker if you are a woman. Whether or not you have kids. Whether or not you work outside the home. Whether or not you are married. You are a homemaker because God has designed your role to be a keeper of your home. “And so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive, that the word of God may not be reviled.” - Titus 2:4-5 Managing a home, or helping your parents manage a home, is about so much more than dusting and dishes and laundry and cleaning. Keeping a home takes motivation, direction, and a vision of what you want for your home. Keeping a home means transforming four walls into a place of rest from this world. It means creating a haven for your family to slow down and focus on Christ. That is going to be our ultimate goal within our homemaking. Creating a Gospel-Centered Home means crafting an atmosphere of Christ-likeness. The physical aspects of running a home: the cooking, the cleaning, the bill paying, are all extremely important. So don't get me wrong, those are important tasks and parts of being a homemaker. But ultimately, the motivation and the goal behind our homemaking is to glorify God and to point our family and ourselves back to God. 2) You don't have to be a wife/mom to be a homemaker The beautiful thing about being a homemaker is that God gave us the tools that we need to fill our role – even if we work full time outside the home or are not married yet. God has made women naturally caring, nurturing, intelligent, and able to balance a million things at once.God has given us the provision in Titus 2 to look after other women, mentor them, and learn how to grow together.

What does it mean to be Gospel-centered parents? You must be anchored right in your love for Jesus, in your love for your spouse and your love for your kids. We saw that being gospel- centered parents has everything to do with your relationship with Jesus. Paul writes about parenting after he establishes who Jesus is and what Jesus has done. He talks about parenting after he establishes what the church is and how its supposed to function. He talks about parenting after he has established the beauty of the marriage relationship. Gospel centered parents must have the right foundation and remembering how the marriage and the church is supposed to function will help us parent the right way.

What does it mean to live out a Gospel-Centered home? How we define the Gospel - and live it out in our homes - can have a profound impact. But it takes intentional thought and purpose in our homemaking to focus on Gospel-Centered living within our home. From our marriages, to our kids, to our day-to-day activities - the Gospel impacts our lives fully and has the power to transform even the most mundane of tasks. That's what today's episode is focused on. Having a Gospel-Centered home means purposefully and intentionally creating the goals, activities, and atmosphere in the home to be firmly centered on the Gospel. But this gets more specific than just running a Christian household. It means intentionally focusing on the GOSPEL of Christ in all aspects of our lives: in parenting our children, in our relationship with our husbands, how we spend our time the priorities we make throughout the day, and how we use those small pockets of extra time. Jason and I are both reading it now and when our boys get older, we plan on reading it together as a family. I think we throw the term "Gospel" around so often, that we become numb to the meaning of it. And yet, the Gospel should be our primary focus in our homes. We need to teach it to our kids, hide it in our hearts, and have it open for display to those who come into our homes. You need a thorough understanding of the Gospel, it's critical! I highly recommend you check out this short book. You can get the hardcover for $11 currently on Amazon or it looks like they have it in pamphlet form for $2.99 on Amazon! It's called Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin. I had no idea what to expect from this small book but it was really amazing. The tagline for the book is How to study the Bible with both our hearts and our minds. I've read a lot of books on similar topics and unfortunately, the ones written specifically to women tend to be very light and fluffy. But Jen really cuts to the core of what it means to study the Bible and gives some really great, solid, Biblical teaching on the subject as well as hand's on, practical advice for actually studying the Bible. I love this quote from her in chapter one: "It might seem that studying the Bible would be something we should know how to do intuitively. After all, if God discloses his will and character there, wouldn't the Holy Spirit just open up its message to our hearts? But this is not the case. Yes, the Holy Spirit opens the Word to us, but not without some effort on our part. Do you know that the word disciple means 'learner'? As a disciple of Christ, you and I are called to learn, and learning requires effort. It also requires good study methods. We know this to be true of our schooling, but do we know it to be true of following Christ?" Women of the Word pages 22-23 I have the hard copy of the book but you can also find it on Amazon on your Kindle or even as an audio book! If you don't know already, I am a HUGE fan of audio books. I listen to them while I cook, clean, and drive around town on errands. I am able to fit so many more books into my schedule by doing that. In case you missed it, you can listen in to the last episode here: Episode #007: Determining How You Should Spend Your Time as a Homemaker. As a busy mom of four young boys, I've found that I have to be very strategic in planning out my day for I don't get done. I have to determine what the most important things for today are, because in reality, I’m not going to get everything on my “to-do” list done - and sometimes I can really only accomplish one or two things in between dishes, diaper changes, and the normal things that take up our time throughout the day. Instead of strictly regimenting every minute of every hour of my day, I’ve learned to set priorities for the day. Certain things (like Bible study) are such a high priority that they need to get done first thing. Otherwise, the unexpected things of your day (especially life with little kids) will turn your schedule upside down and you may end up heading to bed at night feeling like you got nothing done…again. In case you missed it, you can listen in to the last episode here: Episode #006: Freezer Cooking & My Homemaking. As a busy wife, mom, and blogger, it can be really hard sometimes to know where I should spend my time. Between all the chores around the house, cooking 3 meals a day, trying to show love to my husband, caring for and nurturing my kids, and squeezing in some time to write...some days I just don't know where to start or what I should spend my time on. If I didn't have to sleep or eat, maybe I could get it all done. But it's impossible. I can't say yes to everything, I know that I need to have priorities in my homemaking but the hard part is knowing what those priorities should be! That's what today's episode is about: Setting priorities for our life and homemaking so we can better determine where we should spend our time as homemakers. Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. In This Episode, You Will Learn: The importance of knowing when to say YES and when to say NO to opportunities How to create a priorities list for your life, family, and homemaking Finding the freedom in knowing you CAN'T do it all Breaking your personal priorities down into bite size pieces [Tweet ""Creating a personal priorities list is vital in enabling us to determine what is truly important..." - Crystal Paine"] Episode summary I created our personal and family priorities last Summer and it has been so freeing knowing what my husband and I have decided on as priorities in our lives. It allows me to freely say yes to the priorities we've established and happily say no to the things that don't line up. I was inspired to do this last year by the book Say Goodbye to Survival Mode by Crystal Paine. “Creating a personal priorities list is vital in enabling us to determine what is truly important and what opportunities we can pass up. After all, if we don’t know what is most important to us, how will we know it when it comes our way?” – Crystal Paine, pg 17. This is the challenge we are tackling today. We are going to walk through creating a personal priorities list for your life. I encourage you to block some time out for this, go somewhere quiet, grab a cup of coffee and really let yourself pray and think about where your priorities in life are. The author is Crystal Paine from Money Saving Mom and I just can't get enough of what she has to say! Her book has been transformation when it comes to how I run my household and feeling like I'm actually in control of my home! Let me just tell you, that with 4 young kids, I often feel this desperate survival mode. Like I'm walking through each day just barely surviving. Just holding on until bedtime for when I wake up and do it all over again. If you have ever felt this desperation at trying to manage it all and feeling like you are barely treading water (or maybe you feel like you are drowning!!) then this book is for YOU! I highly recommend it. It's my #1 resource that I recommend for homemakers who are feeling overwhelmed or lost in how to practically manage their home. This book comes in a hard copy, on Kindle, and even as an audiobook!

In case you missed it, you can listen in to the last episode here: Episode #005: Serving From Within Our Homes Through the Biblical Art of Hospitality. In the last several episodes, we have been covering the Biblical aspects of homemaking, how we can serve from within our homes, and more. But today I want to talk about something on the practical side of homemaking: Freezer cooking and how it can have a huge impact on your home and your kitchen! Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. In This Episode, You Will Learn: How I came to fall in love with freezer cooking The different methods of freezer cooking Tips for a successful freezer cooking day A quick getting started guide And resources for recipes & meal plans [Tweet "The goal of freezer cooking is to cut down on your time spent in the kitchen, at the grocery store and to save money."] Episode summary My journey with freezer cooking started one night, early in our newlywed days as we went out on our favorite date: prowling around Barnes and Noble. My favorite section to hunt through are the bargain and discount books right up at the front. I always find awesome cookbooks and other practical books for awesome prices! And this night I came across I book called Once a Month Cooking: Family Favorites and my kitchen changed forever. Over the years my cooking has changed and I now cook more whole foods and try to stay away from things like white flour and processed foods. So while I don't use this cookbook anymore, and I've come across some amazing freezer cooking resources since then, I will forever be thankful to have come across this cookbook in the clearance section. In this episode my goal is to introduce you to freezer cooking and give you the courage to try it out yourself! I will share more details about freezer cooking, the different methods you can use, and how it can have an impact on your cooking, your kitchen, and your family! But instead, today I want to highlight what has recently been the most helpful thing to me: Once a Month Meals. They are a website devoted to freezer cooking meal plans and recipes! They have a TON of amazing free meal plans each week including a whole food meal plan, paleo, gluten-free, kid friendly meals and more! They do have a subscription option which gives you access to additional features (which I think are worth it in my opinion) but they also give SO much away for FREE and it's awesome! This is where I recommend you start for amazing freezer cooking meals and menus. Thanks for Listening! Thank you so much for listening in to my podcast. Welcome back to the fifth episode of my brand new podcast: The Homemaking Foundations Podcast –Where we give you the tools, inspiration, and encouragement you need to craft a Gospel-Centered Home. In case you missed it, you can listen in to last week's episode here: Episode #004: Taking Baby Steps to Healthier Living for God's Glory. It can be hard sometimes as busy homemaker's to find the time, energy, and ability to serve within the Church and in our neighborhoods. That's why I think this topic in today's podcast is so important: How can we, as busy homemakers, serve God from within our homes? Through the Biblical art of hospitality. Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. In This Episode, You Will Learn: How we can serve God from within our homes through hospitality The Biblical command behind hospitality What hospitality looks like (and what it doesn't) Practical Tips for practicing hospitality And diving in deeper [Tweet "The ultimate purpose of hospitality is to minister to those around us – both believers and unbelievers."] Episode summary Hospitality: What comes to mind? Do you picture a beautiful house complete with a gourmet meal, friends around the dinner table, and polite chit chat? Hospitality can be this, but it’s really much more. Hospitality can look like: Inviting a non-Christian family out to pizza after the soccer game. Sharing a picnic at the park with the single mom down the street. Inviting that new couple at church over for Sunday brunch. Hospitality can come in many forms but the ultimate purpose is this: To honor and obey God by serving those around us. As Christians we are called to practice Biblical Hospitality…and practice it with joy! Welcome back to the fourth episode of my brand new podcast: The Homemaking Foundations Podcast –Where we give you the tools, inspiration, and encouragement you need to craft a Gospel-Centered Home. In case you missed it, you can listen in to last weeks episode here: Episode #003: Setting the Atmosphere in Your Home for God's Glory. The aim of my podcast is to give you the encouragement, inspiration, and tools you need to craft a Gospel-Centered Home and so one of the first things I want to talk about is the impact that we have on our family. The first aspect of this I want to talk about is how we can take baby steps towards healthier living for God's Glory. Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. In This Episode, You Will Learn: Our responsibility in healthy living Making an idol out of healthy living Taking baby steps towards healthy living including: Cooking from scratch, eliminating toxins, exercise, and more! [Tweet "Our goal in healthy living should not be to lengthen our lives but rather more fully serve God."] Episode summary Today I want to talk about something that we don't often think about as homemakers, and that's how our own health, and the health of our family is important and can be used to Glorify God. It's not about the latest fad diet or fitting into those skinny jeans. It's about the ability to serve God to the best of our ability. As a homemaker, wife & mother I know it’s my responsibility to make sure my family is living a healthy life. We are not perfect at it but I do strive to create a healthy environment for my family. I think it is glorifying to God to take care of our health and our bodies. Throughout this episode we will take a look at what our responsibility is in healthy living, God's sovereign control, and then dive into the baby steps we can start taking towards healthier living for Gods Glory. I had heard good things about this book for months, but because it's a bit pricier, I was hesitant to actually order it. When my husband said he wanted to try and lose weight, I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and buy it. While I bought it to help us lose weight, the chapters and chapters in the beginning all about healthy living and eating, totally opened my eyes to really understanding what sugar and processed grains and junk do to our body. I learned more about proper nutrition from that book than any other! There are some pretty fantastic recipes in this nearly 700 page book - but don't let that overwhelm you. This book rocks!! Welcome back to the third episode of my brand new podcast: The Homemaking Foundations Podcast –Where we give you the tools, inspiration, and encouragement you need to craft a Gospel-Centered Home. In case you missed it, you can listen in to episode #1 here: What Does it Mean to be a Homemaker? and episode #2 here: Creating Simple Homemaking Routines That Work With Katie Bennett. The aim of my podcast is to give you the encouragement, inspiration, and tools you need to craft a Gospel-Centered Home and so one of the first things I want to talk about is setting the atmosphere in the home. I think this is where it all beings and where we can have the greatest impact as homemakers. What does the tone in your home say about you and your family? Right click here and save-as to download this episode to your computer. In This Episode, You Will Learn: The importance of setting the atmosphere in your home How to set an UN-glorifying atmosphere in your home Why it's important to make your home a haven And 5 steps for creating a God-Glorifying atmosphere that points your family back to Christ! [Tweet "Conduct yourself and your home in a way that your family is constantly thinking about God and how they can serve Him!"] Episode summary What does it mean to be a homemaker who glorifies God within her home? What tasks and things should we be focused on, and what can we lay aside for the sake of our family? That's what we are going to dive into in this episode. This quote has become my guiding post in creating an atmosphere in my home: “The wife and mother who views life as a “cross to bear” influences the others in the home to think the same way. She easily robs everyone else of joy and like the yeast in the bread she bakes, her ungodly attitudes spread to everyone else.” ~ Martha Peace, The Excellent Wife {Page 77} Throughout this episode we will spend some time looking at why we should care as homemakers, wives, and mothers about the atmosphere in our home. Then we will briefly talk about some easy ways to set an UN-glorifying atmosphere within our home. And finally we will discuss 5 steps you can begin taking today to glorify God within your home by the tone and atmosphere that you set. If you are looking for some Gospel-Centered encouragement on the sometimes messy task of being a mother, then I highly recommend you go pick up this book TODAY! I love this quote from the book: “The Christian mother’s hands are full with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Eph. 1:3) and her work in nurturing children in the fear of the Lord is her privileged participation in God’s work in uniting all things in Jesus (Eph. 1:10). This Jesus, whom we gladly serve, offers rest to mothers and fills our hands with his blessings. Day and night, moment by moment, we must choose to rest in Jesus. That’s what it means to treasure Christ when your hands are full, whether you have one child or a dozen.” – Treasuring Christ, page 17 Other Related Resources: When Decorating Can Be Used for God's Glory A Beginner's Guide to Hospitality Three Specific Ways to Set the Tone in the Home Five Ways to Make Your Home a Haven Thanks for Listening! Welcome to my brand new podcast: The Homemaking Foundations Podcast - Where we give you the tools, inspiration, and encouragement you need to craft a Gospel-Centered Home. This podcast has been in the works for over a year (yeah - we ordered the microphone and equipment needed LAST December). And I am so over the moon excited that we are finally launching season 1 which will run from June 2nd until mid-December. So join me back here every Tuesday for a new episode of the Homemaking Foundations podcast! This first episode kicks off defining what a homemaker is - and then we will move into all different aspects of homemaking, Biblical womanhood, marriage, and so much more. You can sign up to get an email when the podcast is posted each week. What is a Podcast? You can find all the show notes below - but I know that not everyone is familiar with what a podcast is. So I want to briefly cover what a podcast is and how you can listen along. Read about my favorite podcast's I listen to here. A podcast is basically like a weekly online radio show. You can subscribe to the podcast through iTunes, sign up for my email updates, or follow along right here on the blog. Like I said, we will cover all aspects of Gospel-Centered Homemaking and I will be bringing on many amazing guests to share their wisdom and advice on homemaking. Check back for episode #2 for our first guest! In This Episode, You Will Learn: What the real definition of a homemaker is Do you have to be a wife and/or mom to be a homemaker? [Tweet "Being a "good" homemaker means intentionally focusing each day on Christ. - Jami Balmet"] Episode summary Before we launch into various aspects of homemaking in later episodes of this podcast, I wanted to first kick off by laying a firm foundation of what a homemaker is. So as I sat down to start writing the notes for this podcast, I decided that instead, I would just share my first session from the Homemaking From Scratch Online Conference that we had back in October. I knew that if I tried to re-record this same content, it wouldn't come out as well the second time. So feel free to ignore the references to the conference - or if you want to check it out, you can still download the full conference, notes, and bonuses HERE - and instead focus on the core message: What defines a Biblical Homemaker? I want to challenge you to think outside the box a little when it comes to being a homemaker. I don’t think that a homemaker is something you become, but rather, something that you are. "As so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working-at-home, kind, and submissive, that the word of God may not be reviled." - Titus 2:4-5 Links & Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Homemaking From Scratch Online Conference Sign up for my weekly podcast emails Titus 2:4-5 Leslie Ludy quote from Set-Apart Femininity The Excellent Wife Kelly Patterson quote from Christian Homemakers Handbook Thanks for Listening!
