Fueled by 50-mile-an-hour winds, the Yarnell Hill Fire rages out of control. Fire officials have no choice but to evacuate all residents and firefighting crews in its path. But there's still one crew out there: the Granite Mountain Hotshots. They think they've found a shortcut to a safety zone, but unbeknownst to them, the fire is heading right for them.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
When the Yarnell Hill Fire abruptly changes direction, hotshot Brendan McDonough has to abandon his lookout post and run for his life. Meanwhile, the rest of his crew, the Granite Mountain Hotshots, are safe on a ridge, in what firefighters call “the black” – an already-burned area. But when the winds change direction, and push the fire towards the town of Yarnell, crew chief Eric Marsh makes a fateful decision: to lead his men out of their safe area, so they can help fight the fire.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Granite Mountain Hotshots arrive in Yarnell to help fight what is now the number-one fire priority in all of Arizona. But crew chief Eric Marsh is frustrated when his guys are assigned to create fire breaks at the back of the fire. He wants his team to be on the front lines, where the action is. Meanwhile, driven by high winds, the fire begins to threaten the town of Peeples Valley, forcing the evacuation of the fire command center and throwing the entire firefighting effort into chaos.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Friday, June 30, 2023, is the 10th anniversary of the deaths of 19 wildland firefighters in Arizona. They were hotshots, the kind of people who really do fight fire with fire. Led by a consummate professional, the team made a move that no one expected and no one can explain. That move caused the deaths of the entire crew except for a lookout, who was stationed some distance away.To help me tell their story today, I've enlisted the help of Todd Able. He's a battalion chief with the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority. He is also an experienced Type I Operations Section Chief for wildland fires. And that's where he was assigned on the Yarnell Hill fire.

It's getting hotter outside, and that traditionally signals the start of wildland fire season in the U.S.Nowadays, of course, there's no real “season” when wildland fires burn. The season can be all year long in some parts of the country. We won't argue about the reasons why—suffice it to say, wildland fires are growing bigger and more frequent than in the past. And, as residents of the northeast U.S. can attest, they are starting to burn in less fire-prone regions. With that in mind, and considering that this month is the 10th anniversary of the loss of the Granite Mountain Hotshots in Arizona, we're talking wildland fires. This time, it's a sort of primer on decision-making for those fighting fires in the backcountry. And some lessons learned from a guest who's familiar to those who have listened to Code 3 for a while.Chad Costa is Assistant Fire Chief for the city of Petaluma, California. He's had 24 years of experience working in both urban and wildland firefighting environments. That includes time at Cal Fire and as an Operations Branch Director for California Interagency Team 1.

I have no idea how many times I have heard the old phrase, “Practice makes perfect.” Of course, nowadays, we understand that it's wrong. If practice is going to be worthwhile, we need to practice the right things the right way. Practicing the wrong things is a waste of time. And practicing doing things incorrectly only leads to learning bad habits. And in this job, that can get you killed. So how do we avoid this? Ever heard of Reflexive Readiness? If you've heard my guest speak at a conference—you may have. Making his return to Code 3 to explain this is Corley Moore. Corley is a battalion chief for the Moore, Oklahoma Fire Department. He's got 25 years in the fire service. And he also hosts “The Weekly Scrap” at Firehouse Vigilance.
On June 30th, 2013 the Yarnell Hill Fire erupted through the mountain community of Yarnell, Arizona, and claimed the lives of 19 firefighters. This was the greatest loss of life for the U.S. fire service since the September 11 terrorist attacks. Fire service leaders, plus family and community members, shared their grief. Amanda Marsh lost her husband that day, Eric Marsh. In this episode, she honors the memory of Eric by sharing her journey through grief. Amanda has faced this adversity with courage and is now helping others endure loss through the Eric Marsh Foundation. The Eric Marsh Foundation is a 501 C 3 nonprofit based in Prescott, Arizona. Brendan McDonough was the sole survivor among the 20 members of the elite firefighting group the Granite Mountain Hotshots during the fatal Yarnell Hill fire of 2013. As the crew battled a raging wildfire, 19 perished in a tragic event that was memorialized in the film Only the Brave. Brendan tells us how he escaped death and about his agonizing road to recovery. After battling addiction throughout his youth, Brendan McDonough found sobriety when he joined his firefighter crew - the Granite Mountain Hotshots. However, Brendan tragically found himself the sole survivor of his crew after the Yarnell Hill Fire swept through Arizona in 2013. This horrific loss left him with unspeakable pain, PTSD, and sent him spiraling back into addiction and he even considering taking his own life. But God got a hold of Brendan's heart. Through his family, local church, and community leaders and friends, Brendan found hope, healing, and purpose. Since then Brendan founded Hold Fast Recovery Ministry where he and his team are helping men get free from their addiction. For Brendan it's not just about a successful program - it's about being a shepherd, it's about helping people dig deep, to learn to dream again, and helping them learn to know God's voice for themselves. With an 80% success rate, Hold Fast Recovery is a game changer for those who are ready to overcome addiction. And Brendan's humble and personal leadership style is at the heart of it all. Whether you're a church looking to help those with addictions, have a loved one who is in need of help, or an individual who wants to know how to serve and support those in this fight - this episode is for you. Get your “stale coffee” and some tissues and hit play. Notes: www.holdfastrecovery.com 1-800-351-6858 @donut_928
On tonight's episode of Sons Of The Flag Radio, Task Force Director Chad Gruver sits down with Burn Survivor and Task Force Member, Devin Barnhart, and Brendan "Donut" McDonough, of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, to discuss how they found purpose in tragedy and how the Firefighter community can better support one another in grief counseling, suicide prevention, and PTSD. Devin is a firefighter in Fort Collins, Colorado; and newest member of the SOTF Task Force. In 2004 Devin was involved in a horrific structure fire where three of his friend were fatalities and he was left with 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 75% of his body. Brendan "Donut" McDonough is the lone survivor of the Yarnell Hill fire tragedy of 2013.
