It's our final entry in our 'That's a comic book movie?!?' series! And we're taking a look at an entry that's barely an entry, 2013's Oblivion. This is the first pairing of Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski who'd later reteam in the much more successful Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Set in the apocalyptic future of 2077, there's a big triangle in the sky telling Tom Cruise what to do which you'd think would be fine but it might be bad actually. The veteran boom operator for film and television Sean Armstrong returns to the show for a deep dive into Joseph Kosinski's new big budget sports drama F1®: The Movie starring Brad Pitt as former racing prodigy Sonny Hayes who returns to the Formula One circuit decades later at the behest of his old friend, APXGP team owner Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) to provide mentorship to his hot-headed young British rookie Joshua Pierce (Damson Idris) and rescue the struggling underdog team's season.Made with the full co-operation of F1's governing body the FIA, F1®: The Movie is propaganda for the sport where the screenplay takes a back seat to extraordinary action sequences as we follow the team through the back half of their circuit season all over the globe. Sean provides his full knowledge and understanding of Formula One to explain how this movie tries to serve two masters: fans of the sport and a general audience. We also discuss the sport's appeal to women and how F1®: The Movie sometimes lets this cohort down in terms of some sexist content, how this movie measures up to other racing films, Apple's investment in the film biz (this being by far their most successful release, despite the gargantuan production cost). Plus how the stars have been using the high-profile publicity tour: Pitt hoping to whitewash his damaged personal image of the last few years, Bardem taking every opportunity to use this spotlight to bring attention to the genocide in Gaza and remind people of reality.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Hollywood collaborates with the FIA, the motorsport governing body, to try to convince us that Formula One is not, in fact, televised Microsoft Excel, but actually very exciting indeed. To this end, it brings in accomplished genre action director Joseph Kosinski, star Brad Pitt, and every cliché under the sun. And it's great fun. There's hardly anything realistic about this story of a sixtysomething has-been given an unexpected shot at glory in racing's most prestigious competition, despite the extraordinary effort that's been made to evoke the world of F1, including shooting during real races and race events, with real drivers filling the scenes and even the real commentary team of Crofty and Brundle talking us through the action. The ironic curse of such detail is that the audience most attuned to recognising it is precisely that which will take issue with the film's inaccuracies; José, on the other hand, doesn't know F1 from a hole in the ground, and has no such problem. We discuss the incredibly intense action and praise the cinematography that captures it; Pitt's perfect fit for the role of a veteran driver who once had promise, made a series of mistakes, but nonetheless carries himself with a casual, appealing ease; whether the film is a corporate biopic, a term Mike is pretty sure he invented and is desperate to catch on; how you can't call yourself an artist when you're just selling a product; and whether Kosinski can make a film that depicts complex human interactions. F1 is far from a great film, but it pretends to be nothing other than what it is: a deeply derivative, expensively made, fabulously shot and entertaining advert for Formula One. It's easy to recommend. See it! Recorded on 13th July 2025.

FIRST 1:00:30: Spoiler-Free Review with our See It/Skip It Verdict AFTER 1:00:30: Full Spoiler Review It's another edition of See It or Skip It and this time Ian and Liam are trading pit stops for popcorn as they take on F1 (2025) — the high-octane feature debut of Joseph Kosinski's long-rumoured Formula 1 blockbuster. But with Brad Pitt behind the wheel and a grid full of fictional racers, does F1 actually cross the finish line, or is it just burning fuel for two hours? Ian and Liam are here to rev their engines and break down whether this racing drama earns pole position among sports films or stalls out on the formation lap. Does F1 deliver the speed, spectacle, and spirit of the sport, or does it take a detour into Hollywood clichés, CGI corners and an extended advert for F1, Tommy Hilfiger, Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi? What should an F1 movie really accomplish in its opening lap? Is this a thoughtful love letter to motorsport fans, or a flashy pit stop for casuals with a need for speed? The boys examine whether the fictional Apex GP team is worth rooting for—or if they're just coasting off the Ferrari fumes. All this and more in this week's See It or Skip It review of F1 (The Movie)—and of course, Ian and Liam let you know if you should SEE IT or SKIP IT.

Todd Kramer and Robert Nelson peel back the visor on F1, the high-octane Joseph Kosinski‑directed drama starring Brad Pitt as a legendary driver battling both the track and his demons. Alongside Pitt, we've got Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem and—get this—our friend Pepe Balderrama (yes, the one who came on the podcast!) playing race engineer Rico Fazio, pulling double duty with Todd in the offstage driver's seat. We dive into manic Grand Prix sequences, Hans Zimmer's pulse‑pounding score, and question if the nostalgia and spectacle add up to more than cinematic pit‑stops. Is F1 a turbocharged triumph… or spinning its wheels when it counts? Robert keeps his verdict under‑wraps—does he cross the finish line with a thumbs‑up or a checkered flag of doubt? Tune in to find out.
Looks Like Antarctica Wasn’t the Only Place Superman Crashed This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl are talking about the Super(Meh) Opening Weekend Box Office, the last 3 episodes of Murderbot season 1, and they review F1. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Superman Box Office: 7:17 Murderbot: 17:00 F1: 35:55 Superman (2025) Box Office Opening weekend performance: Domestic 3‑day sitting at ~$100–130 million Worldwide debut crossed $200 million Forecasts suggest long‑term haul could reach $1 billion if word‑of‑mouth holds Overall sentiment: Some critics and audiences praised Corenswet's optimistic Superman, slick humor, and DC's tonal reset. Issues cite an overcrowded plot and CGI-heavy final act that didn't fully capitalize on its potential. Murderbot (AppleTV+) Episodes Covered: 8 “Foreign Object”, 9 “All Systems Red”, 10 The Perimeter” Highlights: Ep 8: Secrets revealed—Murderbot admits a shadowy past weaponizing its crew's memories Summary: Murderbot accompanies the PresAux team back to the habitat. The recording of the security cameras shows that in their absence, more superior SecUnits and a representative of the hostile third party—now identified as GrayCris—visited the habitat and left an invitation to meet at a rendezvous point to negotiate terms for their survival. After a security check, the PresAux team take Gurathin to the medical bay. While Bharadwaj performs surgery on Gurathin’s leg, Murderbot plugs into his data port to turn off his sense of pain. The connection allows Gurathin to find out what it calls itself, and that the SecUnit was involved in the deaths of 57 clients, which Gurathin reveals to the group and condemns Murderbot for. Murderbot admits it’s not sure if it killed the clients or not and agrees with Gurathin’s assessment that it could be defective and dangerous, then it leaves the group to go out on its own. The PresAux team concludes that GrayCris is illegally pursuing the alien remnants and that they will liquidate them once they locate their whereabouts. After mulling over whether to abandon or betray its clients, Murderbot comes back and announces that it has a plan. Ep 9: High-stakes deception! Murderbot fakes betrayal to take down GrayCris agents and saves Dr. Mensah in a cliffside showdown Summary: Murderbot puts a dangerous plan into motion, pretending to betray the PresAux team in order to leave the planet. While the team expresses doubts and tension rises, Murderbot keeps the true plan hidden: to have Gurathin hack into GrayCris’s HubSystem using a drone as a transponder and launch their emergency beacon. The ruse includes offering to help GrayCris capture the Preservation team in exchange for being listed as destroyed inventory. Murderbot stalls the enemy using awkward small talk and quotes from Sanctuary Moon, while the PresAux team manages the remote connection. As the plan begins to succeed, GrayCris prepares to torture Murderbot for the information they seek. Mensah intervenes and is caught in the crossfire. In the end, Murderbot shields her from the beacon’s launch blast, which kills the GrayCris team, nearly sacrificing itself. Before Murderbot’s systems fail, it quietly admits to itself that these humans have become its clients not just by contract, but by choice. Ep 10 (Finale): An emotional farewell—post-rescue reprogramming, autonomy restored, and Murderbot walks away into an uncertain future Summary: As Murderbot’s systems reboot, Corporation Rim technicians delete its memory and install a new governor module. At the same time, the PresAux team negotiates with company representatives to find the SecUnit. They offer to buy it and threaten with a lawsuit, but the company refuses, telling them that its memory has been wiped anyway. So Pin-Lee files an injunction to seize Murderbot for evidentiary reasons, while Gurathin manages to retrieve the data that was downloaded during the memory wipe. He locates Murderbot’s personality files by searching Sanctuary Moon episodes. The team saves Murderbot from being destroyed, and Gurathin uploads its personality. It recognises that without its armour it looks like an augmented human. The team invites Murderbot to live as a free agent on their home planet. That night, Murderbot attempts to sneak away but is intercepted by Gurathin, who tries to make it feel welcome. Murderbot insists that it needs to check the perimeter. When Gurathin relents, Murderbot thanks him. Posing as a servant bot, it boards a transport ship that departs as Mensah awakens and realises that it has left. On the one hand, the IMAX-driven spectacle of F1 is undeniably satisfying to watch on the big screen; on the other hand, we all walked out of Joseph Kosinski's second teamup with producer Jerry Bruckheimer unsure whether it qualifies as a movie and not just a sophisticated simulation thereof. Despite the star power of Brad Pitt and a plethora of familiar sports-movie tropes, there's a human element missing from F1 that left us all slightly perplexed, and which is thrown into even sharper relief when placed against the character-driven comedy of the other film in this pairing, TALLADEGA NIGHTS. But despite their drastically different points of view, the two share some uncanny similarities that we get into during Connections, from their shared narrative tension between team loyalty and individual glory, to a crash-and-burn approach to trauma, to a wallpaper-like view of corporate sponsorship. Then we take an extra lap on this racing pairing with a Your Next Picture show recommendation for the long-running Netflix docuseries F1: DRIVE TO SURVIVE. Jeff is on vacation this week, so it's up to Derek and Amir to pull off the rare double feature episode. In a week of dueling popcorn blockbusters, which crowdpleaser — John Wick spinoff Ballerina or racing drama F1 — will reign supreme? We talk Ana De Armas, Brad Pitt, and the highs and lows of both movies.
This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is dominated by bald baddies. Namely, a group discussion of the hairless horrors who have been tormenting do-gooders in all kinds of movies throughout the years. But also, our very own James Dyer, whose unexplained absence from the podbooth has Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and Alex Godfrey speculating wildly, and threatening to send out search parties. Will James turn up? And if he does, how will he react to a conversation about bald villains? What will he have to say about the week's movie news? And what are his thoughts on James Gunn's Superman, which is the main topic of conversation in the reviews section. And speaking of Superman, Chris Hewitt sits down with the new Man Of Steel, David Corenswet, for a fun and fascinating chat. [23:41 - 42:04 approx] But that's not all — ahead of the full debut of our F1 spoiler special next week, we whet your whistle with an excerpt from our interview with that film's director, Joseph Kosinski. [56:39 - 1:07:27 approx] Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a Formula 1 car going at roughly 200 miles per hour. Easy mistake to make.
Mike and Kenny review the Summer action blockbuster F1: The Movie starring Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, and Kerry Condon and directed by Joseph Kosinski. Pitt stars as race car driver Sonny Hayes, who is invited to join an F1 team despite a 30 year absence from the F1 circuit following a traumatic crash. The team's owner, Ruben Cervantes (Bardem) drove with Hayes when he was a rookie and is desperate for his team to show success or else he will lose it. Part of Hayes's impact on the team needs to be mentoring the team's rookie sensation but yet to be successful driver, Joshua Pearce (Idris.) Produced by Jerry Bruckeimer and Apple Studios, F1 The Movie included scenes shot during F1 on location at several Grand Prixs, the British, Italian, Las Vegas, Japan and Abu Dhabi. Faith Spotted: The place and necessity of Community: I Corinthians 12, the Body of Christ consists of many parts, all of which are vital and dependent on one another. Such dependency requires trust and faith in each other. As Christ had total faith in God, discisples of Jesus must also have faith in the God's redemptive power and in the new life promised in Christ. This is reflected in F1 in all the members of the team, from the owner, drivers, and all crew members. Without everyone working together the team fails. Living in Community requires Humility. As Paul teaches in Philippians 2 all persons of faith are called to imitate the humility of Christ. As Jesus did not use his position as God to gain attention, power, and to be served, but rather to serve God and others, discipleship of Christ calls for persons to be humble and use talents and other blessings of God in the service of God and others. Hayes, Pearce, and others in the film are challenged to reign in their ego's and desires for personal fame and glory in order for the team to win and all to be successful. Over coming Adversity, Failure and Fear: Faith in God's love, grace, and the promise of new life, allows us the freedom to struggle against adversity and the fear of failure. The teaching and life example of Jesus calls us to live out of faith rather than in the midst fear because God cherishes all people for who they are, God's children, not for what they accomplish. Calling, Purpose, and Passion: Sonny Hayes was born to race. It doesn't matter if he was racing in the glamorous world of the F1 circuit or isolated Baja races. In contrast Joshua Pearce saw racing as a means to an end, glory, wealth, popularity. Pursuing his purpose and passion rather than the perks of success enabled Hayes to find joy in all circumstances. Children of God are called to discover their purpose and use the gifts and blessings that God offers that drive that purpose.

This figure makes it Apple's highest-grossing film to date, surpassing previous top performer Napoleon. A significant portion of its opening weekend revenue—19%—came from IMAX screenings, ranking fourth for IMAX's share of global debut sales behind Dune, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and Oppenheimer. The film's success has also sparked discussions about a potential sequel, with director Joseph Kosinski expressing interest in continuing the story. While no official sequel has been announced, the film's performance makes further installments increasingly likely.Support the showThe audio clips used in this podcast, including excerpts from movie/series/documentary trailers, are used under the principles of fair use and fair dealing for the purpose of criticism, commentary, and review. In 2022, director Joseph Kosinski wowed us with amazing sights from inside fighter jets in “Top Gun: Maverick.” In 2025, he's dropping our jaws to the floor with awesome sights from inside F1 race cars in the summer blockbuster “F1” starring Brad Pitt. PItt plays veteran driver Sonny Hayes who is asked by his friend, who owns a team, to help them win and maybe mentor their young driver too. Hayes soon finds that today's racing is fraught with betrayal, nasty media, corrupt F1 officials and that's before he gets in the missile with tires going 200+ mph. Is it worth finding out how it all goes down at the theater? Check out this episode to find out. “F1” also stars Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Damson Idris, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, Sarah Niles, Will Merrick and Callie Cooke.Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

We discuss if Brad Pitt and company hit top speed or need to turn back into pit lane, and we ask if this movie will create new fans of the sport. Plus, as fans of the sport ourselves, we strut our wheel knowledge of how well this translates Formula One racing from track to screen. Also, after taking another ill-fated trip to dinosaur island, Zach gives a quick rundown on Jurassic World: Rebirth. Investing in yourself is the ultimate career hack. When you believe in your vision enough to create something - even on the side, even without guaranteed success - you open doors that might never have existed. Joseph Kosinski didn't wait for permission; he made a CGI short in his apartment, submitted it to festivals, and that single act of creative courage launched his entire career. His journey proves that investing in YOURSELF, developing your unique POINT OF VIEW, and then putting your work out into the world can transform everything. Don't just dream about your creative potential - invest in it, showcase it, and trust that your distinctive voice will find its audience.
