Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Oliverez are the lead songwriters of the alternative country rock band Granville Automatic. They bring incredible pedigree to their partnership. They have been writing songs that have been recorded by a wide range of Nashville artists including Billy Currington, Sugarland, Kira Isabella, Aaron Goodvin, Wanda Jackson, and Angaleena Presley. Prior to teaming up, Elizabeth was the Grand Prize winner of the Yoko Ono sponsored international John Lennon Songwriting Contest and Vanessa made it to the Final 12 on the second season of American Idol. Their songs are rooted in rich American history and carefully crafted based on these historical events, making them the perfect interview for Backstory Song. They just released their fourth full album, Tiny Televisions, and they are here on Backstory Song to discuss songs from that album and some of their earlier Granville Automatic work. On this episode, Elizabeth and Vanessa discuss “Tiny Televisions,” “Ice Cream,” “Hell’s Half Acre,” “Monsters In The Stars,” “Goodnight House” and “You Can Go To Hell, I’m Going To Texas.”http://www.granvilleautomatic.com/https://www.instagram.com/granvilleautomaticband/https://www.facebook.com/granvilleautomatichttps://twitter.com/gvilleautomatic
Once again the show returns to the subject of connecting to history through music! This time were putting some twang on it and getting into the sensational history of Music City, Nashville, Tennessee! Joining us in this episode are singer-song writers and authors of the new book; "Hidden History of Music Row," Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Olivarez of the Country Music/Americana duo Granville Automatic, to discuss their new book, what it is like being a musician during a pandemic, and the inspiration for the groups 2015 EP "An Army Without Music."
Episode 146: Wendy Moten is one of Nashville's most versatile and accomplished singers. She's been a solo R&B artist, a jazz singer, a duet partner with Julio Iglesias and a road vocalist with Martina McBride and Vince Gill. But lately she's taken on a storied role, singing lead with Nashville's extraordinary western swing band The Time Jumpers and she's released a new album of classic country covers. How a preacher's daughter from Memphis became a country artist with a meaningful platform is a great story. Also, the duo Granville Automatic brings a powerful sense of history and narrative to their eclectic, catchy songs.

On today’s show I welcome Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Olivarez of the group Granville Automatic to talk about their new book with co-author Brian Allison Hidden History of Music Row. Nashville’s Music Row is as complicated as the myths that […]
Nashville’s Music Row is as complicated as the myths that surround it. And there are plenty, from an adulterous French fur trader to an adventurous antebellum widow, from the early Quonset hut recordings to record labels in glass high-rise towers and from “Your Cheatin’ Heart” to “Strawberry Wine.” Untangle the legendary history with never-before-seen photos of Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Kris Kristofferson and Shel Silverstein and interviews with multi-platinum songwriters and star performers. Authors Brian Allison, Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Olivarez dig into the dreamers and the doers, the architects and the madmen, the ghosts and the hit-makers that made these avenues and alleys world-famous. Elizabeth Elkins is a professional songwriter and writer. A military brat, she holds degrees from the University of Georgia and Emory University. She has written for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Creative Loafing, Art & Antiques and many others. She is president of Historic Nashville Inc. and the author of the upcoming Your Cheatin’ Heart: Timothy Demonbreun and the Politics of Love and Power in Nascent Nashville (Vanderbilt University Press).Vanessa Olivarez is a professional songwriter and vocalist. A Texas native, she was a Top 12 finalist on the second season of American Idol and received a Dora Award nomination for her work in the Toronto, Canada production of Hairspray.Together, Elkins and Olivarez are Granville Automatic, an alt-country band that has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today and the Bitter Southerner. Their songs have been used in numerous television programs and films, and they have written songs recorded by more than seventy-five other artists, including Billy Currington, Wanda Jackson and Sugarland. They were the songwriters in residence at the Seaside Institute’s Escape to Create program (Florida), where they wrote a Civil War concept album, An Army without Music. Their 2018 album Radio Hymns focuses on the lost history of Nashville, and the 2020 follow-up, Tiny Televisions, was inspired by Music Row stories in this book. You may have seen their videos on CMT. The pair live in Nashville, Tennessee, and regularly tour across the United States. While not a musician himself, Brian Allison was born and raised on stories of country music. His father, Joe, was a producer, songwriter, radio personality and pioneer, and without his stories, this book would not have been possible. A professional historian, museum consultant and writer, Brian is the author of two other books for The History Press, Murder & Mayhem in Nashville and Notorious Nashville. He lives in Nashville.
Today I'm joined by Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Olivarez, members of the country duo Granville Automatic. They like to focus their songs around telling stories and use music to get across parts of history that people may have otherwise not known about. With their newest album, they've taken that a step further, coming up with a truly unique format. They are releasing ‘Tiny Televisions' as a companion album to their newest book ‘Hidden History of Music Row'. Having a book and an album come out to complement each other is a great idea, and they explain to me where this idea came from and how exactly it works. We talk about making music and the difficulties the pandemic has brought to the music industry, both in aspects of performance and in releasing new material during this time. The conversation moves to food and the different eating habits that we have, flexitarianism, intermittent fasting, and we even talk a little about smoking weed! It's a crazy time for all of us, but this a duo that's definitely good at keeping their heads screwed on straight and still being productive even in times like these. “It's difficult and makes you feel like you don't have a purpose when you can't do what you love and what you feel like you were put on the earth to do. I'm hoping that we will be lifted up soon and put into a space where we can all thrive and do what we love again.” – Elizabeth Elkins Time Stamps: 01:28 – Where they got their band name from. 02:59 – How the band got started. 05:35 – What their newest album is focused on. 09:01 – The last shows Granville Automatic played before lockdown and when more future shows will be possible.11:25 – The problems with live-streaming music. 17:25 – The new food they've been eating during lockdown, and the idea of being a ‘flexitarian'. 26:40 – Intermittent fasting and the benefits it has. 28:34 – The benefits of smoking weed over drinking alcohol. 30:48 – The writing Elizabeth has done over lockdown. 35:54 – The difficulties with releasing a record and a book during this pandemic. 37:50 – How they got into book writing and what the history their book is based around. 44:53 – The difficulties with understanding all the different forms of social media that keep coming out. 47:34 – The future projects they are planning and working on. Led by a modern-day Linda Ronstadt, Granville Automatic writes songs the Associated Press calls “haunting tales of sorrow and perseverance.” With influences as diverse as Emmylou Harris, Ryan Adams, The Smiths and Dawes, Granville Automatic has created a one-of-a-kind sound that revolves around their passion for storytelling. The duo, comprised of Nashville songwriters Vanessa Olivarez and Elizabeth Elkins, is named after a 19th-century typewriter. The girls' devotion to the project has proved a chaotic road of back-breaking touring, interpersonal tension, former-day-job balancing, other-band leaving, and a love-hate dynamic that brought them from Atlanta to Nashville. I got to catch up with songwriter Elizabeth Elkins and find out how's she's getting through the lockdown in Nashville.

Love and murder, The Grateful Dead, and politics with Cris Jacobs and history minstrels Granville Automatic. Some might remember Cris from The Bridge or from collaborations with Ivan Neville, and we do tackle that. But we jump into his most recent records Dust To Gold, Neville Jacobs, and his latest Color Where You Are. Not one to shy away from political discussions or even in song form, Cris covers all of this in his music and in conversation. But first Granville Automatics Vanessa Olivarez and Elizabeth Elkins drop some dark history nuggets from their latest record Radio Hymns. Cris Jacobs guitarist and vocalist from The Bridge were a band from Baltimore, Maryland that called it quits 10 years after forming. Since then Cris released his critically acclaimed albums Dust To Gold and a collaborative album with Ivan Neville, Neville Jacobs. Cris and I dive into a chunk of his catalog but first, we talk about The Bridge and it's jam band roots. Then even why after 10 years, what's it like to venture out on your own and handle change. Color Where You Are, has some noticeable changes in songwriting. This isn't lost on Cris. Songs cover topics from current state affairs, optimism and healing after trying times, but still with great production. We dive into the vibe of the record and its songs. Visit for tour dates and stream his latest record. Also, follow him at @cris_jacobs. Granville Automatics own Vanessa Olivarez and Elizabeth Elkins doesn't offer your everyday history lesson. It's a cool balance of Adam Ruins Everything in that they tell you the true history and set the record straight and Jon Prine as Indiana Jones with a guitar. Radio Hymns, a 13-track concept record mining Nashville’s lost history from the two wives of city founder Timothy Demonbreun to the day in 1974 that the Ryman Auditorium was saved from the wrecking ball. The album features guest appearances from Jim Lauderdale, Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra, Ben Fields and Matraca Berg. Sex, drugs, ghosts, and the history of Nashville are bottled up in this conversation with Olivarez and Elkins. Stream, download their latest music and visit for tour dates and other legit records from their catalog. Be sure to follow them @grandvilleautomaticband.

Granville Automatic merges history with songs. This isn't stuck in the library on a Saturday night kind of music. Imagine more if John Prine was Indiana Jones. These songs do belong in a museum but we're lucky to hear creative takes on some of histories darkest moments. It's no different in their latest record Radio Hymns. Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Olivarez are tenured songwriters and artists, together and separately, but together they bring history to life even when we tried to leave these stories buried. For Radio Hymns, you hear some of Nashville's best kept, darkest secrets. Themes of murder, deception, condemnation, redemption, and even Jimi Hendrix are muses for this 13 track history lesson. Again, these are the things you didn't learn in eighth grade Tenessee history. For this sneak peek of our 2019 season, I thought. Let's share a love story on Valentines Day. It's the story of a Barber, his love, a nut case, and a gun. Visit , download and stream Radio Hymns, and give them a follow .

THE HONEYCUTTERS are, at the heart, the musical collaboration of singer/songwriter Amanda Anne Platt and Lead Guitarist/ Producer Peter James. While their sound has drawn comparisons to such artists as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris or Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Platt and James produce a refreshingly unique blend of Americana music that is comfortingly familiar while being entirely original. This Asheville, NC band has just released their second album When Bitter Met Sweet. GRANVILLE AUTOMATIC is Vanessa Olivarez and Elizabeth Elkins. This Nashville-based alt country duo write songs pulled from a shared love of history, horses and war. Granville Automatic is named after a 19th-century typewriter: Vanessa is a collector. With sonic references like Lyle Lovett, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson, Granville Automatic has created a quiet and lyrical sound devoted to telling stories from the past. Both girls have a history in the music business: Vocalist/songwriter Olivarez wrote and recorded a Top 10 single in Canada, has three cuts on Sugarland records, including a song on their multi-platinum Enjoy the Ride album, and received a Dora nomination for her work in the Toronto production of Hairspray. She was also a finalist on the second season of American Idol. Guitarist/songwriter Elkins is a Grand Prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest who has showcased at the Billboard/BMI Acoustic Brunch at SXSW, at BMI showcases in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Nashville, and at CMJ. The band's self-titled debut studio album was just released.
