On this episode, Trey compares the song "Strawberry Wine" to the charges that Hunter Biden received in the recent plea announcement. His music combines the depth of a singer-songwriter with a fusion of Rock and Alternative genres, injecting a breath of fresh air into a scene often dominated by Country roots. With a powerful vocal range and a singing style influenced by icons like Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, and Layne Staley, Dylan Wheeler stands out as a truly unique and exceptional artist. His music defies categorization, appealing to a wide audience and fueling dreams of success. Currently living his dream, Dylan's future looks promising as he continues to make his mark in the industry. Hailing from Edgewood, Texas, he cut his teeth in small dive bars, following in the footsteps of his East Texas heroes. However, what sets Dylan apart is his ability to cultivate a dedicated fan base even before officially releasing his music.Through social media platforms like Twitter, Dylan garnered fans from all over by sharing acoustic videos of both original songs and covers. One of his videos, a rendition of the 90s country hit "Strawberry Wine," quickly gained over 100,000 views, providing a glimpse of his potential. This early fan base eagerly anticipated the release of his first EP, "Tell Me If I'm Wrong," in late 2018. The songs from this EP accumulated tens of thousands, and later hundreds of thousands, of streams, solidifying Dylan's destiny as a full-time musician. In 2019, Dylan made the life-changing decision to quit his job in the Oil & Gas industry and fully commit himself to music. Embracing this new path, his schedule filled up with bigger and better shows, frequent trips to Nashville for writing and recording, and continuous engagement with his growing fan base. Each new song released showcased his artistic growth, attracting new fans while further captivating his existing supporters.Within just a few years, Dylan's journey has transformed from receiving tens of thousands of views on acoustic videos to amassing tens of millions of streams across major platforms. He has transitioned from playing small dive bars to selling out major venues in his home state and beyond. However, Dylan sees himself as just beginning, believing that the sky's the limit. DID I SHAVE MY LEGS FOR THIS (1996)Album Information: Did I Shave My Legs for This is the debut studio album of American country artist Deana Carter, released via Patriot Records in the UK in 1995. In 1996, Capitol Records had Carter record new material for the North American release of the album, which included three songs from the original release.[8] This version features her breakthrough debut single "Strawberry Wine", a number-one hit on the Billboard [[Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at the end of that year. "We Danced Anyway", "Count Me In", and the title track were also released as a singles. Of these, "We Danced Anyway" and the promotional single "How Do I Get There" also reached number one. (Wikipedia)Album InfoEverything's Gonna Be Alright (1998)Everything's Gonna Be Alright is the second studio album by American country music artist Deana Carter. Released in 1998 as her second and final studio album for Capitol Records Nashville, it features the single "Absence of the Heart", a number 16 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts in late 1998. "You Still Shake Me" and "Angels Working Overtime" were released as the second and third singles, and peaked at numbers 36 and 35, respectively. "Ruby Brown" failed to chart in the U.S., but managed to reach number 74 on the country charts in Canada.Album InfoFather Christmas (2001)This holiday album manages to be great despite itself -- one of Deana Carter's strengths is her songwriting; this is a collection largely of standards. Even though it adds a kind of fireside charm, the guitar accompaniment, provided by her father, Fred Carter, Jr., seems ham-handed and often off-tempo. The only thing about the album that isn't flawed is her voice. Subtle and sweet, she charms throughout and sets a gentle, soothing tone that is perfect for a wintry evening. Carter has also managed to present a holiday album that manages to exude a down-home country style without resorting to stereotypical twanginess and fiddles. Father Christmas may not go too far to try to be original or different, but it is pretty memorable just the way it is.Album InfoI'm Just A Girl (2003)I'm Just a Girl is the fourth studio album released by American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter. The album peaked at #6 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart and #58 on the Billboard 200, and produced two singles. "There's No Limit" was released in late 2002 as the lead single. The song was Carter's first Top 20 hit since "Absence of the Heart" in 1998, when it peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks #interview #countrymusic #deanacarter chart in early 2003. The title track was released as the album's second single, which was a minor Top 40 hit. This was Carter's only release on Arista Nashville; she then switched to Vanguard for her next albums. The cover resembles a magazine cover.Album InfoThe Story of My Life (2005)The Story of My Life is the fifth studio album released by American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter. The album peaked at #26 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart and #150 on the Billboard 200. "One Day at a Time" was released in March 2005 as the lead-off single, and entered the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the week of April 9, 2005 at #57. It reached a peak of #55 after three weeks, although the song later reappeared on the chart for two additional weeks in late June-early July. The follow-up singles, "The Girl You Left Me For", "Sunny Day", and "In a Heartbeat", failed to enter the chart altogether.Album InfoThe Chain (2007)The Chain is the sixth studio album of American country singer/songwriter Deana Carter, first released in 2007. Since, the album has peaked at #60 on the US Country chart. The first and only single off the album, "On the Road Again," was released in 2007, failing to land on the
Deana Carter came out in 1997 throwing nothing but heaters - number one hits, the legendary "Strawberry Wine" (which we've covered), and many staples on country radio. But the title track from her debut "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" is what solidified her as a forerunner of the "girl power" movement's foray into Country Music. What better way to wrap up women's history month than with the incomparable country hit that asks the ever present question for most straight women: men - why even bother? We are joined today by musician (and coincidentally wife of Drew) Lucy Lightning. A clip of her single, dropping April 22, plays at the end. Follow Lucy on instagram and YouTube! Deana Carter's seminal hit "Strawberry Wine" is a whole a** mood. Your sister loved it. Your friends loved it. Your momma loves it a little too much if we are being honest - why does she hit that high note with a tear in her eye? The song is beloved and wonderful. But of course, we are us- so we have to also get into the potentially darker side of the song. Now don't worry, we make up for potentially ruining your favorite piece of young -ove nostalgia by making Drew's wife Andi embarrassingly relive her own high school romances. Y'all, we are extremely into our own batch of strawberry wine on this episode, so bear with us. Enjoy and Happy New Year. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Alli Walker is back with the release of her new single "Country Music". Giving listeners insight into some of the biggest country tracks and artists that have shaped her life, the nostalgic and upbeat track is available on all streaming platforms. Written by Alli, Dustin Bird and Brian John Harwood and produced by Danick Dupelle (Tebey, Tyler Joe Miller, Emerson Drive), the track got its debut on TikTok earlier this year. Quickly racking up over a million views, the demo allowed fans to bond over the role country music has played in their lives. “I wanted the production, storytelling and emotion of this song to feel as nostalgic as it does when listening to some of the songs we mention in the track,” says Alli of how “Country Music” came together. “I can still remember belting out Alison Krauss's part in 'Whiskey Lullaby' when I was a teenager, repeating 'Remember When' by Alan Jackson over and over on my little blue MP3 player and performing 'Strawberry Wine' to a slow dancing crowd with my cover band. When I sing this song it brings back so many memories of discovering my favourite country tracks throughout my life.” The release of “Country Music” showcases Alli's first new music since dropping her debut album The Basement Sessions in Fall 2019. It also marks a new direction for the PEI native as she finds her sound and carves her own path in the industry. “Prior to my debut album, I spent over 10 years getting my feet wet - I knew I needed my 10K hours and my 'dues paid' before I released anything of my own,” explains Alli. “Writing, recording, and releasing my debut album on my own in 2019 was the perfect experience on what it takes to be an independent artist and still cut through the noise".
No, it's not made of strawberries. Strawberry Wine is a country music-inspired wine company that captures a moment in time. Kate Edgecombe, friend, sommelier, and creator of Strawberry Wine Company, joins me today to talk about her wine and the inspiration behind it. We are both drinking her Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is delicious. She also has a Rosé and announces in this episode, for the first time ever, the newest wine to be added to Strawberry Wine Company. Kate says the inspiration for Strawberry Wine Company is two-fold. Her first desire to create a new wine came from the lack of options and quality in wine at music and event venues. As an avid country music listener and concert attendee, she was constantly underwhelmed by her choices for wine. References to alcohol are not scarce in the music industry, and there is no shortage of songs about wine. Kate says her Spotify playlist is hundreds of songs deep. The name Strawberry Wine came to her as this beautiful reference to so many things, as just this moment in time. While she does get confused around the name and its specificity to her type of wine, when she tells the story, people love it!These wines are incredible. I'm holding the Cabernet Sauvignon in my hand and it's amazing down to the bottle and label. As someone who explicitly states, I am not a wine expert; this bottle tells me all the flavors and notes I should be tasting, and suddenly I can point out those exact flavors! As a sommelier, Kate wanted to make sure her clients could understand and experience the wine as if she was sharing it with them.Kate is on a journey to create better choices for wine in venues. She definitely hit a setback, when her first bottle was released at the height of COVID in April 2020. However, as the world opens back up she is ready to share her wine with the world and country music lovers alike. As we recorded this she was gearing up for her first wine festival.Stay tuned, because I am excited to announce Kate agreed to do a virtual wine tasting with the Crystal Uncorked community. This month's guest, Matraca Berg, grew up in a musical family. Her mother Icee Berg (yep, real name!) was a songwriter and session singer who at first wasn't crazy that her daughter wanted a career in country music but later became her best teacher. Her stepfather, Dave Kirby, was a songwriter whose credits include the Gene Watson classic I've Got Memories to Burn and Charlie Pride's Is Anybody Goin to San Antone. The family lived in Nashville and often hosted parties featuring writers and singers. So, it stands to reason that being around that kind of environment would kinda rub off on a person. But in Matraca's case, it was more than just a smudge; she was gifted the talent- and the drive- to have over 50 of her songs recorded, including several that helped female artists to dominate country music in the 1990s like they have never before... or since. She is a CMA and ACM-winning 2008 Nashville Songwriting Hall of Fame inductee who's quick to give credit to her co-writers, she's married to Jeff Hanna of the legendary Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and she's a pretty great solo artist too. A few episodes ago, Caddy added Strawberry Wine by Deanna Carter to the playlist per a request from pod peep (really, superspreader) Melissa. It was an event that left the show with a whole lot of questions. The first segment of today’s show clears a good bit of it up because Melissa brought some answers. Then, Morgan Wallen strikes again. And we’re not just talking about when he ran Donna off the road. Morgan is spending his third week on top of the charts and still had time to drop some new music. If you’ve listened to any of it, let us know what you think. To round off the music segment Donna shares the story of how Miranda met her “blue light hubby” at the Biltmore KOA. Do we have the proper set up for vaccination? Donna wants to know about the sanitation and licensing. Caddy wants to know about the juice boxes and cookies. They both agree who should REALLY be running the process. Paging all biologists. We’re looking for the difference between groundhogs and beavers. When you’re done with that, we’re also paging all college admission officers. We’re trying to figure out your inside arrangement with the United States Postal Service. It’s an episode that is really on the hunt for some answers. There’s a new sheriff in town. And by that we mean the show has a new sponsor. Donna and Cadillac Jack introduce their new partners and what they can do for us all. Check out hertz.com/mycar or give Caddy a call if you have any questions. You know the number- 7704646024. The last segment of the show covers a phenomenon that literally (we mean it- literally) no one can fully understand. Even still, Carl Appen voices in and tries to give an explanation.
Did you know that “Take Me Home, Country Roads” was written for Johnny Cash? Or that “Whiskey Lullaby” was pitched to Dierks Bentley? Bobby and Eddie talk about a list of big country hits that were actually written, pitched and sometimes even recorded by other artists. They talk about whether or not it would work with the first person the song it was pitched to. Bobby also talks toDeana Carter about Strawberry Wine celebrating 25 years, her early days making music and becoming friends with Kenny Chesney before he was a star. This week we sit down and pour it up with one of our favorite Canadians Julian of BC Wine Trends and learned more about the love of country music and rosé with our friends of the Strawberry Wine Company! About BC Wine Trends Julian resides in the Okanagan Valley, close to so many first-class wineries and enthusiastic winemakers. Before starting the BC Wine Trends blog in 2015, he had the opportunity to visit wineries on three continents. Born in Melbourne, Julian spent time in Margaret River, Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland, the home of his favourite Pinot “Bass Phillip”. He was fortunate to go to school with Phil Jones and remember helping him out with some early '70s plantings in his Leongatha vineyard. Best Aussie Wine 2013. Living in Phoenix for 15 years gave us the opportunity for multiple trips to the California wineries in Napa, Sonoma, Lodi, Paso Robles, Temecula, and his favorite Santa Barbara. Hard to beat the Lodi Zins and Santa Barbara Pinots for value! Another favorite west coast destination was Seattle with easy access to the Woodinville wineries, love those Cabs and Syrahs. His vacations took us to some exciting winery locations in Italy (Tuscany and Veneto where we fell in love with Amarone). In Spain the sparkling wines of Cava outside of Barcelona and the great reds of Roja. This gives you a feel for his background. Our objective for the wine blog is to cut through the Marketing hype and deliver information of value to BC Wine enthusiasts. About Strawberry Wine Company Strawberry Wine Company was created in the middle of a country concert for two reasons: 1. Combining a passion for the love of music and the love of wine 2. Building a community for people who love both of those things. SWC was founded as a homage to pay tribute to country music's past, but also looking forward with a bright and fun outlook for the future. Our debut Rosé is made from grapes of Petite Verdot grown in sunny Clarksburg, California. This is the perfect Rosé to take with you to your next concert, picnic or fun event. Cheers! Strawberry Wine Company Rosé 2019 Rosé, This rosé is made from grapes of Petit Verdot grown in Clarksburg California. Nashville’s Music Row is as complicated as the myths that surround it. And there are plenty, from an adulterous French fur trader to an adventurous antebellum widow, from the early Quonset hut recordings to record labels in glass high-rise towers and from “Your Cheatin’ Heart” to “Strawberry Wine.” Untangle the legendary history with never-before-seen photos of Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Kris Kristofferson and Shel Silverstein and interviews with multi-platinum songwriters and star performers. Authors Brian Allison, Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Olivarez dig into the dreamers and the doers, the architects and the madmen, the ghosts and the hit-makers that made these avenues and alleys world-famous. Elizabeth Elkins is a professional songwriter and writer. A military brat, she holds degrees from the University of Georgia and Emory University. She has written for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Creative Loafing, Art & Antiques and many others. She is president of Historic Nashville Inc. and the author of the upcoming Your Cheatin’ Heart: Timothy Demonbreun and the Politics of Love and Power in Nascent Nashville (Vanderbilt University Press).Vanessa Olivarez is a professional songwriter and vocalist. A Texas native, she was a Top 12 finalist on the second season of American Idol and received a Dora Award nomination for her work in the Toronto, Canada production of Hairspray.Together, Elkins and Olivarez are Granville Automatic, an alt-country band that has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today and the Bitter Southerner. Their songs have been used in numerous television programs and films, and they have written songs recorded by more than seventy-five other artists, including Billy Currington, Wanda Jackson and Sugarland. They were the songwriters in residence at the Seaside Institute’s Escape to Create program (Florida), where they wrote a Civil War concept album, An Army without Music. Their 2018 album Radio Hymns focuses on the lost history of Nashville, and the 2020 follow-up, Tiny Televisions, was inspired by Music Row stories in this book. You may have seen their videos on CMT. The pair live in Nashville, Tennessee, and regularly tour across the United States. While not a musician himself, Brian Allison was born and raised on stories of country music. His father, Joe, was a producer, songwriter, radio personality and pioneer, and without his stories, this book would not have been possible. A professional historian, museum consultant and writer, Brian is the author of two other books for The History Press, Murder & Mayhem in Nashville and Notorious Nashville. He lives in Nashville.

410 - Ed Berghoff Ed Berghoff is welcomed on The Paul Leslie Hour. He is a musician, composer, singer, songwriter, record producer and music publisher. Some of the top recording artists have interpreted his songs: Garth Brooks, Billy Ray Cyrus, Wynonna, Michael English, Engelbert Humperdinck, Doug Stone and others. Berghoff was also the bandleader for Deana Carter (of Strawberry Wine fame) for a time. These days Berghoff composes music for hit TV shows and is also working on a solo record and a book. Listening to Ed Berghoff talk is a pleasing thing. He communicates in a laidback style. I'm looking forward to him returning to the show at some point, perhaps to perform some of his great songs. As for now, he's right here on The Paul Leslie Hour. Happy listening.

It's completely unclear to us why we continue to do these blind tastings, especially when escalating to tequila as we did this week, but just assume all the cocktails and bad trashy romances have finally rotted out our brains, just like Mom always warned. This tasting went just about exactly as you might imagine in your mind, but at least we got some cool information on the background of tequila and margaritas. To decide what tequilas made the cut this time around, we went with silver tequila and by price range, starting with a $10 tequila and going up to $50+. Our contenders were Casa Dragones, Avion Silver, El Mayor Blanco, El Tesoro, and Coa De Jima. Will the most expensive again rank last place? Will Sam FINALLY win a liquor tasting badge, or even just get ONE guess right? Will Kassandra make it through this without vomiting? Will Ashley give another tequila-fueled rendition of "Strawberry Wine" like on Cinco de Mayo?Only listening will get you the truth. This is our last episode of Season 2, which only took two years instead of one... Sorry for the ghosting again, guys. Next episode we'll be doing a Season 3 Kick-Off special with some New Orleans inspired drinks!
Vancouver, B.C.'s Syd Carter West is here to share her new single Blue Eyes and to talk about her country-rock style, songwriting, her biggest challenge to face & much more!
This week I introduce you to a new Canadian artist Syd Carter WestCanadian singer/songwriter Syd Carter West knew music was her passion when she sang her first tune at the age of two, humming to music on the radio such as Deana Carter (her first favourite song being Strawberry Wine), Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks, Amanda Marshall and more. Syd started vocal training at the age of seven and began to write her own lyrics and melodies shortly after. After years of dedication to her vocal training, Syd started integrating her powerful and fierce vocals into Country/Rock music, this inspired Syd to master the free-spirited techniques of Classic Rock with a fearless vocal range and daring stage presence, but still channeling emotive storytelling and down to earth roots of Country. When one listens to Syd's music, you will be struck by her hauntingly beautiful and rich voice. Her ability to play and embellish with her wide vocal range allows Syd's lyrics to have more meaning. Syd writes with deep emotion, giving voice to those feelings that most of us have a difficult time expressing. Syd wants to motivate listeners to unapologetically embrace who they are meant to be through the music and performances that she provides. Now releasing Country music videos and new songs, Syd is honing into her craft of becoming one of British Columbia's few Country artist find her at www.sydcarterwest.com or where you get your music.

Delta Rae drummer Mike McKee enlightens us on the common ground between Weezer and The Dixie Chicks and shares his observation that songs in 6/8 teach us lessons. After we remember when 30 was old, Mike admits that he originally thought "Strawberry Wine" was written by a Triangle teenager who opened for his high school band. Rachel confesses her love for Boone's Farm (Blue Hawaiian or Melon Ball, please) while Spencer quotes from his Chicken Soup for the Soul book. Mike dishes on some of Nashville's inner workings and we all speculate on how much streaming and social media can combat the anti-woman bias of country radio. We also get an update on Delta Rae's plans after splitting from their label, including the two albums they'll release after their record-setting Kickstarter campaign. PART ONE Scott and Paul go down the rabbit hole of why it's just not the same when certain famous musicians aren't accompanied by their indispensable musical compatriots. PART TWO - 8:15 mark Scott and Paul call up Matraca to get the lowdown on why she wanted to marry songwriter Red Lane when she was four years old; how she ended up with her first hit after crashing Bobby Braddock's party and sneaking into his music room; why she begged Deana Carter NOT to release "Strawberry Wine" as her first single; which of her songs she believes was partially inspired by Harlan Howard from beyond the grave; and why she doesn't want to be in the room with the producer or artist the first time she hears their version of one of her songs. ABOUT MATRACA BERG Matraca Berg landed her first #1 country single as a songwriter when she was just 18 years old. She went on to earn well over a dozen more Top 10 hits by artists such as Patty Loveless (who found success with “I’m That Kind of Girl” and “You Can Feel Better”), Trisha Yearwood (who scored with “Wrong Side of Memphis,” “XXX’s and OOO’s,” and “Everybody Knows”), and Deana Carter (who hit #1 with “We Danced Anyway” and “Strawberry Wine,” the latter earning the award for CMA Song of the Year). Other hits from the Matraca Berg songbook include Reba McEntire’s “The Last One to Know,” Martina McBride’s “Wild Angels,” The Dixie Chicks’ “If I Fall You’re Going Down with Me,” and Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter’s hit duet, “You and Tequila.” The list of others who’ve recorded Matraca’s songs includes Linda Ronstadt, Dusty Springfield, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Ray Price, and Randy Travis. In addition to her success on the mainstream country charts, Berg is what All Music calls “an unclassifiable but utterly classy singer/songwriter and recording artist.” Her debut album, Lying to the Moon, spawned two Top 40 singles and earned her an ACM nomination for Top New Female Vocalist. Her Sunday Morning to Saturday Night album was named one of the Top 10 albums of the year by Time magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and USA Today, while The Dreaming Fields has earned rave reviews from Rolling Stone, NPR, The New York Times, and others. Berg has received three Grammy nominations for Best Country Song, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008, and received the prestigious ACM Poet’s Award in 2017.
This week, two conversations with country music families at their heart. First, up a feature interview with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band co-founder Jeff Hanna and his wife, songwriter Matraca Berg. Matraca's mother wrote songs and had other family in the business. She's had a commanding career with numerous hits including the CMA song of the year 1997, “Strawberry Wine.” Berg is also a deeply respected recording artist who makes albums as exceptional as they are rare. Hanna migrated to Music City from California, but he's got this family tradition thing down, evidence his son Jamie joining the newest iteration of the Dirt Band, which is touring with a new lineup after a profound shakeup. There's a lot of news in our talk about the reconfiguration of that important group. Later in the hour, Glen Campbell's daughter Ashley Campbell steps out on her own with a debut solo album. She's been recognized for her talents as a singer, songwriter and banjo player, but she's been through one of the ultimate family challenges. The Lonely One balances roots, country and pop.
