Send us a textTo sign up for the November 16th virtual LYRIC WRITING WORKSHOP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1070697919299?aff=oddtdtcreatorMy guest today is New England based singer/songwriter Jesse Terry. Before I introduce him I wanted to let you know that on Saturday Nov. 16th I am offering a virtual 3 hour songwriting workshop. There are a few spaces left and you can sign up through the show notes or on my website at scarletvkeys.comThis workshop will be very process oriented focused on lyric writing. You will be doing a lot of small writing exercises to sharpen your lyric writing skills. We will work on metaphor, avoiding cliche's and literary devices used by some of the best writers.Today we will talk about his writing process, crowd funding an album with your super fans and some of the reasons he writes such beautiful melodies. He's going to play a few song off of his new record Arcadia, released Oct. 4. And this might just be his best record yet. It's rooted in rhythmic rock & roll and sharp songwriting, Arcadia marks a turning point in Jesse Terry's career. It's the seventh original album from an award-winning musician who's spent much of the past decade on the move, playing 150 shows annually, bouncing between solo performances and full-band gigs. Arcadia captures both sides of that musical personality, finding room for amplified anthems one moment and intimate moments the next, showcasing just how wide Terry's reach can be. Arcadia is layered with dueling electric guitars, stacked vocal harmonies, and heartland hooks, all supplied by instrumentalists like Ethan Ballinger (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack), Ross McReynolds (Katie Pruitt, Becca Mancari), Sam Howard (Molly Tuttle, Joy Williams), Juan Solorzano (Ruston Kelly, Parker Millsap), and Danny Mitchell (Rodney Crowell, Anderson East). It's a big, bold sound — the sort of record that begs to be played in the car, windows rolled down, driving down the fast lane toward some new horizon. At the center of that sound is the craft Terry has been sharpening since his years in Nashville, back when he composed songs for others as a staff writer on Music Row. A grand-prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Terry established himself as a top-shelf.Jesse's new record: https://open.spotify.com/album/5lpXAMZDC4hqAU0t2AV29Z?si=SpFXPTHsSL-BidKeOtVbgghttps://www.jesseterrymusic.com/Become a podcast member:Join the "What's in a Song" membership community:https://buymeacoffee.com/scarlet.keysMixed by Peter Sykes: https://www.petersykesmusic.com/Otto Gross: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMnxx19QD-vxD4wnYGTn3JwScarlet's website:https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PPScarlet's website: https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PP55NU6E9ST6&keywords=the+craft+of+songwriting&qid=1659573139&sprefix=the+craft+of+songwritin%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1
Grammy-winning Southern roots rock duo Larkin Poe (sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell) join us to chat about their creative process and their exciting forthcoming album, Bloom. PART ONE:'Tis the season! Scott and Paul chat about the classic Halloween songs. Is it time for a modern day resurgence of spooky music?PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, known to the world as duo Larkin PoeABOUT LARKIN POE:Blues-based rock duo Larkin Poe is comprised of multi-instrumentalist sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell. The Georgia natives began their career as an acoustic trio with their sister Jessica in 2004. That year they appeared on A Prairie Home Companion and won the Prairie Home National Teen Talent Competition. In 2008, the Lovell Sisters' song “Distance” won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest grand prize in the country genre. That same year, their song “Time to Grow” received honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition. After an impressive indie career that included two albums, as well as appearances at Bonaroo and the Grand Ole Opry, the Lovell Sisters disbanded. Rebecca and Megan reemerged as a duo pursuing a new sound that was steeped in the electric blues rather than acoustic and bluegrass music. Between 2010 and 2013 they released five indie EPs, two collaborative albums, and a live DVD. They released their debut album as a duo in 2014 and gained attention with the standout track “Don't.” In 2016 they reissued their debut studio album under the title Reskinned, which included new tracks such as “Trouble in Mind.” With the 2017 album Peach, Megan and Rebecca took the production reigns and continued to build a following. The next year's Venom & Faith reached #1 on Billboard's Blues Album chart and earned the sisters their first Grammy nomination. Their sixth studio album, Blood Harmony, garnered another Grammy nomination, which resulted in their first Grammy win in 2024. Larkin Poe's latest album is called Bloom and is set for release in January of 2025.

Dallin Applebaum is an alternative songwriter with a knack for melodic piano-driven songs with a dark-humored spirit. Originally based in New York City, she moved to Nashville in early 2022. Dallin has always been drawn to music- she began playing classical piano at a young age and started singing and writing songs as a teenager. After attending college in New York, Dallin began touring with major pop artists among the likes of Ryan Star & Rachel Platten, in addition to working with recording artists such as Passion Pit, Phil Phillips, Matchbox 20 and many more. Among this success, she also won runner up for Best Folk Song in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2009. . In 2013, Dallin started an electronic rock band called SKYES, who made their way through the Brooklyn indie music scene before she chose to move into writing music on her own. During this time Dallin also wrote and produced pop songs under the alias Alise Indall. Many of Indall's songs can be heard on TV and film, and “I'm That Girl” was featured in the promotion for the 2018 USA Women's Olympic teams. In the process of building her new album, Grey Matters, Dallin began a songwriting club in New York as a place to get together with other songwriters and share ideas. It was through the club that she was able to create a space where she could work through and finish writing all of the songs for her album. Grey Matters, due out in January 2023, explores extremes as a means to understanding and appreciating what's between them. Dallin produced and arranged most of the record herself with the help of her husband & a few extremely talented friends. www.dallinapplebaum.com

The multi talented Rachel Sumner gives us the great insights into her song writing. Rachel has gained critical acclaim and national attention for winning "The Lennon Award." Awarded as part of a contest for song writing on behalf of John Lennon by Yoko Ono Lennon and judged by the biggest names in the industry. Check her out and pre order her new incredible album today at https://rachelsumnermusic.com and make sure you follow her on all her socials! With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice, Rachel Sumner has been captivating audiences throughout the northeast with her exciting new band Traveling Light. While their instrumentation and textures show roots deep in bluegrass and traditional folk music, Sumner's lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something beyond folk conventions, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle/harmonies), Ira Klein (acoustic guitar), and Mike Siegel (upright bass). Sumner is no stranger to the stage. She spent her early career on the bluegrass circuit, singing and writing with the genre-bending Boston group Twisted Pine. Since setting out on her own, Sumner's songs have been critically acclaimed, winning the Lennon Award in the folk category of the 2021 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song "Radium Girls (Curie Eleison);" earning her a spot in the Kerrville New Folk Competition; and being chosen two consecutive years by WBUR/NPR as one of the top Massachusetts entries in the Tiny Desk Competition. Originally a classical flutist from the dusty Mojave desert, Sumner relocated from California to Boston a decade ago intending to study Composition and Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music. While at school, she found herself in the orbit of roots musicians like Molly Tuttle, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, and John Mailander who introduced her to a trove of traditional music, started her off with a few chords on the guitar, and encouraged her to write her own songs. In the short time since, Rachel has become one of the most vital voices in Boston's thriving roots music scene. Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light will release their debut LP in the summer of 2022. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/musiciansandbeyond/support

Estou desde o comecinho do projeto. No elenco estão, além de Clayton Meek, Massi Furlan (Jumanji: Próxima Fase), Alfonso DiLuca (Jane, Virgin), Carly Diamond Stone (Beach Squad), Carson Grant (What Would You Do), Nick Dreselly Thomas, Vicky Dawson (The Prowler) e Cristina Encarnacion (Waves). "O Marlin me achou, a gente conversou e ele pediu várias músicas para ouvir. Mandei essa e ele disse: é essa, nem quero ouvir mais", conta Carla. No filme, a música toca em um momento romântico do filme quando os turistas dançam ao som de Sempre Odara. A RFI falou com a cantora, ainda emocionada momentos após assistir ao filme. "Foi emoção total. Eu tenho músicas na televisão, já cantei em várias oportunidades, mas no telão é outra coisa"

Multiple Award-winning singer-songwriter Amirah transformed her journey with Aspergers Syndrome, trauma from abusive piano lessons, and the challenges of being a bi-racial Malaysian in an era of cultural turmoil into a healing process she aptly calls 'a mission to unite'. The Kuala-Lumpur-born and raised LA native has been twice a finalist for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest amidst a plethora of many others with jury members the likes of Timbaland, Rihanna, and Peter Gabriel. Currently working on her debut album with Grammy award-winning producer Jeff Bova, her signature sound meshes Gamelan, Chinese and Indian influences with zeitgeist-relevant production ethics that are an apt representation of her journey amidst geographical and inner worlds which embrace the risk of appearing complex to the mainstream, and only natural to the global citizen. It's been said that country-pop singer-songwriter Larry Jay's songs are “Five chords and the truth.” The New York native, now residing in California, injects that truth with hopeful lyrics and tasty melodies, to create his own brand of Award-winning Americana-tinged southern fried music. A first runner-up in multiple songwriting contests, including the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Larry Jay says he started writing and performing music “To set my soul free.” Jay has performed at the famed and historic Troubadour in Los Angeles, and he's shared the stage with Neil Young sideman and member of Crazy Horse, Sonny Mone. “When I perform, it's just me and my guitar, and my rhythm tracks looper. I like to keep things intimate. While I've been told I sound like Keith Urban, I think I sound more like Neil Young. Either way, being told I'm a really great songwriter is the best compliment I could ever receive.” Larry Jay shows off his songwriting skills on his latest single, “Here's To Us,” in addition tp to his #1 iTunes international smash single “Wow” featuring Caeland Garner of Team Blake on The Voice and his “end the pandemic” anthem, “Worldwide Party Day.” You can hear Larry Jay weekly via Livestream on his facebook page at https://bit.ly/3lh4AYD. When he's not focusing on his performances and, of course, writing new songs, Larry volunteers with the local VA Hospitals and addiction recovery centers. In this episode, Craig has a conversation with Blake Flattley. Blake writes to bring hope in the darkness, to tell the story of the human struggle, and narrates a story where death doesn't have the last word. Blake grew up in the small mountain of Placerville, California, most well known for gold discovery or as the town with the stoplight in the middle of the highway. He was first turned onto music by a blind saxophonist who had lost the will to play, but one day took up his horn to play at the urging of others. It was that moment, hearing him play, that set Blake on a path in pursuit of the craft of creating music, performing, and songwriting. He grew up singing at church and listening to music from the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash. He played in a variety of bands, playing saxophone, guitar, bass, or whatever other instruments he could get his hands on. In 2008 he founded the Orange Effect (We All Yell, Gravel & Gold), a harmony-driven, Americana-folk quartet. After their breakup, he began playing under the moniker Graffiti Cathedral, and later Blake Flattley. Blake has toured nationally as both a solo artist and with his bands, sharing the stage with many notable artists including Young the Giant, Sharon Van Etten, and Reign of Kindo. Blake has contributed to "The Armchair Project” and "Winter Is On My Head" (The Lone Bellow, Future of Forestry, Paul Baloche, Young Oceans, and Reign of Kindo) as both a producer and as a musician. In 2015, he released There Will Be Rest, a collection of hymns and music from his local church. The title track was a finalist for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. In Songwriter/Producer/Performer Chas Bronxson's own words, his current approach to music is “working for a cause and not for applause.” Such thinking lends a personal approach to building a new audience of fans in tandem with his label's projects. Additional mastery in the areas of vocal arrangement, video directing/editing, and storyboarding all bring a multidiscipline approach to his work. A sharp business acumen has led his indie label, M.O.U.N. Records, Inc. into the mainstream as of 2017. Once as a part of the group Total Control, he appeared on Chuck Chillout & Kool Chip's, Masters of the Rhythm album as well as Kool DJ Red Alert's, Let's Make It Happen album. As a group member and as a solo artist, he did several promo jingles for local NYC DJ's. He also appeared on a Wendy Williams/Kevin Hunter Mixtape under their Questionmark Entertainment venture, with a parody of Dru Hill's “In My Bed” called “In Your Bed”—then performing under the stage name, Ceelo. He kept the name until Ceelo Green from Goodie Mob emerged, thus the rebirth as ChasBronxson. He placed 1st in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for R&B in 1999, and winning a Publishing Contract from EMI, further proving he was on a progressive track with his talent. On a humanitarian level, he's most dedicated to raising awareness in music and its history among the youth, such as in highlighting organizations like The Living Legends Foundation to raise funds for artists who are no longer recording music and facing hard times financially.
