This week, we've gone big and I mean BIG. Perhaps I have, for want of a better phrase, shot my load too early (this is only the 5th episode of our second season after all), but I feel we need to address this particular track, right here and right now. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past decade and a half (and if so, is it listed on Air B&B, I could do with some quiet time), you will have heard MMMBop at least, uuhhmmmm, three thousand times. It was, in 1997, as inescapable as the pandemic was in 2020. If that sounds like I am doing the Hanson brothers a disservice, I am not intentionally being scornful or cynical. This track was everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE. (Image: Roger Sargent/Shutterstock)

College suite-mate, Derek Hawkins, joins the pod for a Rolling Rock nostalgia trip. The boys shame cargo shorts and high socks, while wondering why the band Hanson (MMMBop) is playing local restaurant gigs. After Derek and The Hoppy Boys review the pony-beer, the crew plans a Burger King related piece of bonus content. Light mailbag week thanks to a rapidly dwindling fan-base. Tommy's voice changes.

A quintuple threat––guitar, keyboards, sax, accordion, and vocals, Korel Tunador's a ridiculously talented sweetheart who put the doll in Goo Goo. From a small town outside of Pittsburgh to Berklee College of Music, Korel's always been a musician, with no Plan B. In bands since high school, Korel treated us to a couple of tunes from his early days and one of my favorites from his spectacular solo CD, No Tomorrows. Breaking (kind of) with pop's Hanson (MMMBop), to Jada Pinkett Smith's heavy metal Wicked Wisdom, the Goo Dolls, Katy Perry, and then back for another 12 or so years with the Goo Goos, living the stuff rockboy dreams are made of... playing the Grammys, The MTV Awards, Red Rocks, Stadiums, MTV Unplugged... Abby Road... meeting McCartney... Korel's now refocused on making his own music to follow his brilliant, The Early Mourning, and, his passion for teaching, primarily voice, after studying with his mentor, legendary vocal coach, Dave Stroud, who's worked with Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson, for a few. Korel's working with some insanely accomplished musicians, and looks forward to getting into it with many more. There's science in the craft, and Korel's got the goods and the genius to spare and to share. "Practice makes permanent, so do it with intention, and be present." Words he heard and lives by. Love, love, love this guy––his talent, and his humanity. Fresh out of art school in the early 80's, Tamra Davis turned her video camera toward her friends and ended up one of the most influential music video directors of all-time. Her early work with Tone Loc, Young MC, MC Lyte and Eazy-E set the standard for low budget rap videos. She also did groundbreaking work for bands Sonic Youth, The Lemonheads and Hanson ("MMMBop" and "Where's The Love.") She was also the first person to put a camera in Spike Jonze's hand (in Sonic Youth's "100%.") In addition to her music video work, Tamra Davis is the director you call when a comedian is about to break out. She directed Chris Rock in CB4, Adam Sandler in Billy Madison and Dave Chapelle in Half Baked. She also directed Britney Spears' movie Crossroads. Tamra now works as a TV director and directed the documentary Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. She invited Videohead to her home in Malibu where we discussed her career and her time working with Cher, Lou Reed, the New Kids on the Block and Bette Midler. Thank you for listening.
