Witches, I'm beside myself with this one. This week I'm joined by my favourite podcaster of all time — Timothy Renner from the legendary Strange Familiars podcast. For our second episode in the "Corman Graduates: Jack Hill" series, we talk with director, writer and cinematography, Elle Schneider (THE FOOD THAT BUILT AMERICA, PLEDGE NIGHT: AN INTERVIEW WITH ROGER CORMAN, BLISS BLUE, THAT GUY DICK MILLER), about Jack Hill's MONDO KEYHOLE and PIT STOP. In addition to being friends with Dick Miller and interviewing Jack Hill and Roger Corman on multiple occasions, she is a huge fan of PIT STOP. She brings an technical perspective on both of the films that you won't find anywhere else. First, we talk about MONDO KEYHOLE. We discuss the history and legal challenges with making "Nudie Cuties" and "Roughies" films during the 1960s and how that impacted the distribution of MONDO KEYHOLE. We talk about how Jack Hill got involved with movie, the unique approach he took to casting and filming the movie and the fact that it had to play in adult theaters upon it's initial release. Next, we dive into fan favorite, PIT STOP - one of Jack Hill's most impressive films. We talk about the struggle the movie faced trying to get an audience in an era when black and white films were going out of vogue in the drive-in circuit. We share mutual appreciation for Sid Haig's emotional performance - one that is unique to his filmography. Finally, we discuss the filming approach by cinematographer, Austin McKinney and the unfortunate rift with Jack Hill. We even talk a tiny bit about Sorceress. Elle shares stories about Roger Corman including his ambitions to be a studio director and the decision to step away to start New World Pictures. We also spend a little time talking about serial killers, the fallout between Jack Hill and Austin McKinney, and movies with the best scenes featuring Dune Buggies. Why Dune Buggies? Because Dune Buggies are awesome. We want to generously thank Elle for being on the podcast and sharing her perspectives on these films. You can check out her website at http://elleschneider.com and look for her next documentary about educational films. Maybe she'll cover For Safety's Sake: In the Neighborhood? Probably not. We haven't done nearly enough Sword and Sorcery films on the Bloody Good Film Podcast... Actually thinking back on it, I don't think we've done a single one. Well that's changed since a very special guest chose Sorceress for this very special episode, an episode so special that we told our guest to take a hike and come back another day while us regular hosts talked about Sorceress ourselves. Before we talk Sorceress though we had a few trailers that caught our attentions; a Breed Apart, Dangerous Animals, and Fantastic Four First Steps. After those trailers it's time to go over the very sleazy Sorceress. We'll let you know whether the sleaze, boobs, and blades were enough to rate Sorceress as... A BLOODY GOOD FILM!! We encourage everyone to watch along while you listen and make sure to comment and let us know what you think. Patch 11.1.5 for World of Warcraft was just announced as coming out April 22, so that leads the podcast this week — even if it may seem fast to some of our hosts. Our writer Nick Marino joined us this week because he's our go-to staffer for WoW Classic news, and Season of Discovery phase 8 kicked off today with a whole lot of brand new content. Seems a little weird, but as long as it's fun. Plus, despite it being April, the Diablo 4 team just put out a roadmap for 2025 which includes a ton of new content for the coming year, and a few sections just labelled “IP collabs.” Our hosts speculate that this may mean Master Chief makes an appearance, but after what we're seeing from Fortnite, I'm hoping to get a Chappell Roan skin for my Sorceress.Oh right, the Nintendo Switch 2 release date announcement happened too.If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. We were delighted to talk to author Stephanie Burgis again, this time about one of her own favourite fantasy romances, The Sorceress Transcendent by Casey Blair. There might be some small plot point spoilers in our discussion of the book but we always try to warn you. As always with romance, we know there is going to be a HEA and our episodes aim to share the joy we take in following the characters on their journey towards it and prompt conversations exploring why SFF romance is so fantastic. These are adult romances, so warning for explicit language and please check content/trigger warnings for the book before listening if there are topics that you might find upsetting to hear about. In next week's episode we will be discussing our topic of the month: Adaptations. If you'd like to watch this episode with captions, you can find links to You Tube and Spotify here: https://linktr.ee/SFFRomCast along with our social media details. I am finding connections, and in the light of these discoveries, I view the claims of so-called experts in the field of archaeology with even greater scrutiny. Some now appear as children guessing, rootless, and naïve. All appear to be searching for evidence to back a preconceived or prepackaged theory, ignoring any detail that would put that theory in question.LOAD UP for Christmas:https://SemperFryLLC.com to get Priestcraft: Beyond Babylon, AWESOME Hot Sauce and Creatine-HCL. Tric and Heppa negotiate with saurians. Scene 10 Scene 11 Scene 12 GM Notes This arc, we used a number of video game units to help flesh out our story. Tric imagined Breda as an Elvish Captain. Quemilya's magic theory discussion was influenced by the Sorceress write-up, as Tric's training is by the one for the Elvish Lord. And some of the rapid-seeming changes in the society of our short-lived saurian allies came from the descriptions and artwork of such units as Skirmisher, Ambusher, and Soothsayer. Some cultural details are pulled from the general overview of saurians on the Wesnoth wiki, but I put my own spin on them. Our character art by Del Borovic and the map we refer to (by me!) can be found here. Our music is sampled from Return to Wesnoth by Matthias Westlund (aka West), licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, part of The Battle for Wesnoth Project. Visit them at wesnoth.org. Need context? Witchcraft has captivated the imagination of society for centuries, and is today viewed as an enigmatic symbol of limitless power and feminine agency. But this wasn't always the case. Through art, we can track how witches, once considered monstrous agents of the devil, have been recast as complex figures of mystery, strength, and even allure. Today's Images: Martin Schongauer, ‘The Temptation of St. Anthony' (c. 1470); Hans Baldung Grien, ‘The Sorceress' (1510); Francisco Goya, 'Witches' Flight' (1798); Luis Ricardo Falero, 'Witches Going to Their Sabbath' (1878); and Albert Joseph Pénot, 'The Bat Woman' (1890). ______ Substack: https://mattaoffact.substack.com/p/off-with-her-head-anne-boleyn ______ New episodes every month. Penny Slinger is a Los Angeles–based artist whose work investigates the feminine, the magical and the erotic. In the late 1960s, her encounters with the work of Max Ernst initiated an enduring involvement with both the Surrealist movement and the medium of collage. Her groundbreaking publications such as 50% The Visible Woman (1971) and An Exorcism: A Photo Romance (1977) explore the image of woman through a series of often provocative photomontage self-portraits, and a new expanded edition of An Exorcism will be published by Fulgur Press later this year. Her studies of various divine feminine practices including Tantra led her to co-create The Secret Dakini Oracle deck in the 1970s, and the deck is still in print now under the name The Tantric Dakini Oracle Deck, and she has continued to work with dakini imagery over decades. Penny's work is in many international museum collections, including Tate Britain, and was included in the Tate's recent exhibition “Women in Revolt!” Other notable exhibitions showcasing Penny's work include “The Dark Monarch” at Tate Gallery St Ives, “Angels of Anarchy” at Manchester Art Museum, and countless solo shows around the world. She also recently collaborated with House of Dior, and, as you'll hear, has many more projects in the works. On this episode, Penny Slinger discusses her self-celebrating surrealist art practice, her lifelong devotion to the divine feminine, and how she's celebrating aging in her work and in her life.Pam also talks about older witch archetypes, and answers a listener question about embracing the magic of middle age.Our sponsors for this episode are Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Sphere + Sundry, BetterHelp, and Woodland MagicWe also have brand new print-on-demand merch like Witch Wave shirts, sweatshirts, totes, stickers, and mugs available now here. And if you want more Witch Wave, please consider supporting us on Patreon to get access to bonus Witch Wave Plus episodes, Pam's monthly online rituals, and more!
