The New World Podcast is dedicated to every movie released by New World Pictures. Founded by the infamous Roger Corman, New World Pictures was responsible for all those movies that lived proudly in the back isles of the video store. The ones with names like Death Race 2000, Rock n Roll High School, and Hellraiser. We talk about every single movie and the history behind its production. Some movies are great. Some are bad. All of them are New World.
The New World Podcast is truly a unique gem among film podcasts. Hosted by Ryan, Erica, and Marc, this podcast takes listeners on an entertaining and insightful journey through the world of cult and exploitation movies, particularly those produced by the infamous New World Pictures. From their witty banter to their well-researched discussions, this podcast is a joy to listen to for any fan of bizarre and underappreciated cinema.
One of the best aspects of The New World Podcast is the chemistry between the hosts. Ryan, Erica, and Marc have a natural rapport that makes it feel like you're sitting in on a conversation with your funniest friends. Their playful teasing and inside jokes create an enjoyable atmosphere that keeps listeners engaged throughout each episode. Additionally, their deep knowledge and passion for cult films shines through in every discussion. It's evident that they genuinely love these movies and provide insightful analysis that goes beyond mere mockery.
Furthermore, The New World Podcast offers a nice mix of nostalgia and comedy. If you grew up renting questionable movies from local video stores in the 80s or 90s, this podcast will transport you back to those times. They not only dissect New World Pictures' films but also discuss other cinematic oddities from that era. This nostalgic element adds an extra layer of enjoyment as listeners reminisce about their own experiences with these films.
While The New World Podcast has many strengths, there are some aspects that could be improved upon. Occasionally, the hosts' tangents can veer off-topic for too long, which may frustrate some listeners who prefer a more focused discussion. However, these tangents do often result in hilarious moments as well, so it's a matter of personal preference.
In conclusion, The New World Podcast is an absolute delight for fans of cult cinema and exploitation films. With its blend of humor, nostalgia, and well-researched analysis, this podcast offers an entertaining escape into the world of quirky and underappreciated movies. Ryan, Erica, and Marc make for a dynamic trio that keeps listeners hooked from start to finish. Whether you're a cinephile or simply enjoy laughing along with friends, The New World Podcast is definitely worth a listen.
We continue Marc's Miserable Marvelous May 3: Très Misérables with your friendly, neighborhood wall crawler himself, Spider-Man, in SPIDER-MAN: THE VENOM SAGA! Culled from episodes of the Spider-Man Animated series from the 1990s made by Marvel, which was, at the time, owned by New World! But how will they squeeze the whole story of Spider-Man finding his black suit, realizing the danger, letting it connect with Eddie Brock and face off with his new archenemy in under an hour? We'll tell you! Is there something wrong with Spider-Man mentally? We discuss! Who wrote the theme song? We reveal! Who is the reporter scooping the Daily Bugle? We speculate! Who has the better business plan, Kingpin or Alistair Smythe? We compare! How much more of this is Marc going to have to take? As much as we say, he's a prisoner for the month! Our annual tradition of talking Marvel movies and properties created by New World while it owned Marvel returns and two thirds of us are happy about it. We start Marc's Miserable Marvelous May 3: Tres Miserable with THE INCREDIBLE HULK RETURNS which brought back Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno for what would be a trilogy of TV movies, most of which would attempt to spin off a different Marvel character from it. This sees Dr. David Banner come across an old friend, Donald Blake who can summon Thor by yelling "Odin!" which we all know to be Thor's father, but does Dr. Banner? We discuss! We also discuss Banner's brand-new Malibu digs, his new work set-up and question why he is always on the run, while also diving into the competitive world of racquetball and Cajun accents. Does this movie have Cajun accents? We discuss! Where did THE INCREDIBLE HULK RETURNS land on the Nielsen ratings? We discuss! Which play did Lou Ferrigno do in preparation for this movie? We speculate! Along for the ride is our good friend, writer and performer Peter Fluet, who you will remember from Episode 33: Star Crystal! Do him a favor and listen to that episode so it can get into our Top Ten! Peter explains his love of the original TV show and how devastated he was when it was canceled in the early 80's. We've got a whole lot to talk about including how miserable Marc is! Hint: it's a lot! As we close out #VAMPril 2: Double Suck, we have a special interview with a movie that truly delighted us during the first VAMPril, and that's 1989's TEEN VAMP. Released on VHS by New World Video, this curio stars Beau Bishop as Murphy Gilcrease, a nerdy teen in the 1950s who becomes a vampire, which may sound a bit like TEEN WOLF, but don't worry, it's not, because this time it's about a vampire. Once we saw this little gem, we knew we needed to know more about it and we finally have because the movie's star George "Beau" Bishop agreed to tell us all about it! Beau tells us about his acting career in the 1980s including cereal commercials, a stint on Diff'rent Strokes, and a Judas Priest video before we dive into TEEN VAMP: the audition, the wild set conditions, the missed love connections, and the many deer heads that went into the making of the film! Don't miss this rare opportunity to get a peek into this underseen film! To learn more, check out Beau's article about the making of the film here: https://georgebishopjr.com/i-was-a-teenage-vampire/. #VAMPril 2: Double Suck continues as we explore the dark and mysterious graveyard of vampire films produced by New World Pictures. This week, we are joined by the always hilarious Tommy Bechtold as we discuss 1989's BEVERLY HILLS VAMP starring Eddie Deezen (WAR GAMES), Britt Ekland (MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN) and Tim Conway Jr. (KFI, AM 640). Imagine, if. you will, a film that mixes the comedy/action of BEVERLY HILLS COP with the artistic allure of Grace Jones in VAMP. Keep imagining because this movie doesn't come close. Directed by genre workhorse Fred Olen Ray (a man who seemingly directed every VHS tape your parents warned you about), this cinematic oddity follows a group of hapless Midwestern dudes who come to Los Angeles to break into Hollywood and stumble into a brothel full of vampires—because of course they do. Hilarity ensues as they try and find their way out of a vampire's spell and into a movie that would, today, be shot in Bulgaria over Los Angeles. We attempt to make sense of this movie as the only available copies are missing a few key ingredients including 1) foul language, 2) nudity and 3) ambient audio. What do we mean by "ambient audio"? It's the little things we take for granted when we watch a movie. Things like footsteps, car noises, or the sound of a door opening or closing. Ambient noises is just scratching the surface. BEVERLY HILLS VAMP is filled with wild choices, wilder characters and abnormally horny dudes. If there is such a thing. We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in. Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. It's that time again: VAMPril! Specifically VAMPril 2: Double Suck! Once again we return to the world of bloodsuckers for another month! And there's no better way to start than with NICK KNIGHT, a movie-length TV pilot starring Australian rock star Rick Springfield! And joining us is returning guest Dirk Marshall from the VH US podcast (https://www.vh-us.com/), who we knew would be equally impressed with the surprisingly good soundtrack! Detective Nick Knight is in trouble. Not just because some of his homeless pals are dying, but also because he needs to complete his mug set or be a vampire forever! He'll get some help from a museum curator, who knows where to make the best copies in town, and from some key advice he gets once he meets up with his master! We get deep into Rick in this episode, including what he is like live on stage! Ryan also bought his memoir, Late, Late at Night, and you should too, as long as you're not looking for choice anecdotes about NICK KNIGHT! We also discuss the eventual TV show that arose from this movie, years later, called Forever Knight, and the incredible Crimetime After Primetime schedule CBS released alongside it. We also unveil a potential new t-shirt! Don't miss this episode, or you'll never know where we stand on whether vampires urinate or not! For the fifth year in a row, the New World Pictures Podcast celebrates the work of director/producer Roger Corman by watching his past work and sharing what we loved and what we hated. As you might recall from our first Roger Corman Birthday Celebration, we all planned to watch the same movie but one of us (Marc) didn't read the email and watched an entirely different movie. This year, we decided to try something different. Ryan, Erica and Marc each watched a movie directed by Roger Corman in secrecy. Would each of us watch the same movie or would we each go in different directions? We won't spoil the fun. What we will tell you is this special episode involves a New World Pictures Podcast first. You have to listen to find out. As always, we talk about the history of Roger's pre-New World Pictures Podcast catalog and the unique circumstances that surrounded the production of each film. We also talk about Marc's exhausting podcast schedule including "The Semanticast" and "Geocast". We also talk about the events that led up to Roger starting New World Pictures. Happy Birthday, Roger! Thank you for you do and all you have done! We wouldn't have a podcast without you.
We close out #PrisonMarch 2: Second Offense with an interview with someone who there at New World from the very beginning: editor Barbara Pokras! After graduating from USC (where she went to school with Dan O'Bannon with whom she would work on RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Barbara found her way to Roger Corman's newly-formed New World Pictures, where she went to work dubbing voices and assisting director Stephanie Rothman on New World's first ever movie, THE STUDENT NURSES. From there, Barbara worked on a variety of movies Roger shot in the Phillipines, like NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN, THE HOT BOX, and THE BIG BUST-OUT! We discuss what it was like to work on those movies, how Barbara worked her way up to joining the Editor's Union and landing a job at Cop Rock, the short-lived police procedural musical, and why it was her favorite job. We also discuss I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND, TOO HOT TO HANDLE, and why Wonder Woman was not her favorite project to work on. We could not have been more thrilled to talk with Barbara Pokras, one of Corman's original film school graduates, and we know you'll love our discussion as much as we did! And when you're done, don't forget to pick up her book, Feeding Mrs. Moskowitz, here. Listen up, #PrisonMarch is back this week for more of Prison MarcH 2: Second Offense! This week's women-in-prison movie released by New World Pictures is 1972's THE BIG BIRD CAGE written and directed by Jack Hill and starring NWPP favorites Pam Grier, Sid Haig, and Vic Diaz. Returning again for the fifth time to dish out her thoughts on this flick is the fantastic Ali Davis! You may remember Ali from one of her four previous episodes with the New World Pictures Podcast such as COVER GIRL MODELS, GODZILLA 1985, TEH FUNNY FARM, and UP FROM THE DEPTHS. THE BIG BIRD CAGE serves time as a non-sequel follow up to THE BIG DOLL HOUSE, only this time with significantly less Lambanog! This time around, Hill delivers on everything you might expect from a film like this given the title, plus a plan to free the inmates of a local women's prison so they can offer companionship to some local rebels! It's the women-in-prison and revolution crossover you've been waiting for, unless you've been waiting for one with lots of birds in it! In that case, you might be in for a surprise! In this episode we will discuss the musical stylings of Pam and Sid on and off screen, the durability of a bamboo Prison, and, most importantly, the team bravely attempts to crunch the numbers on a titty count in this over the top episode you won't want to miss! That's right, #PrisonMarch is back for Prison Marc H 2: Second Offense! Once more, we plumb the depths of the women-in-prison movies released by New World Pictures, this time with an Italian knock-off created after New World's THE BIG DOLL HOUSE became a huge success! Yes, plenty of studios were making knock-offs by 1973, but only Roger Corman would popularize a subgenre and then also release a knock-off of the very thing he popularized! Returning to discuss this Italian version of a Corman movie with us is Chris Iannacone from the Get Me Another podcast, who previously joined us for the Italian-produced LADY FRANKENSTEIN. Lucky for us, Chris has been preparing for this episode FOR YEARS! We will discuss this wild tale in our usual NWPP manner: by piecing together the story from the reassembled footage Roger had put together for its American release. Did Sister Maria do a good job rehabilitating the girls? How important is it to know someone with a circular indoor pool? How cool is Jeff? And what's the biggest thing you've ever slept through? We dive into it ALL! Join us and become one our NWPPVIPs, the only listeners we will bury. Everyone has a different path at New World Pictures, but Alan Toomayan may have had one of the strangest! From driving RVs on movie sets to working as a Production Assistant on New World's GRAND THEFT AUTO and driving Ron Howard around to moving into the editing room for SATURDAY THE 14TH and working with producer Julie Corman, Alan has done it all! Moving on from New World, Alan worked on THE HOWLING where he met director Paul Bartel and would work on Bartel's EATING RAOUL, THE LONGSHOT, NOT FOR PUBLICATION, SCENES FROM THE CLASS STRUGGLE IN BEVERLY HILLS and LUST IN THE DUST, which was released by the second ownership group of New World Pictures! Alan shares the behind-the-scenes stories of working with Bartel, even on the unfortunately cancelled EATING RAOUL sequel, BLAND AMBITION. We also get into Alan's work editing trailers for New World in the 1980s and why HELLRAISER has a special meaning to him. Thanks so much to Alan Toomayan for appearing on the show!! Check out more of Alan's work at his website by clicking here. We close #FFFebruary (Foreign Film February) with an Academy Award winner! Director Volker Schlöndorff's 1979 adaptation of THE TIN DRUM! Based on the book of the same name by Günter Grass, the film shows the rise of authoritarianism in Europe prior to World War II through the life of self growth stunting, drum banging and screaming Oskar (David Bennent), whose ability to shatter glass with his voice is no comparison to his ability to shatter lives! We dive into the drumming of it all (there's a lot), the horse head of it all, and some of the wilder moments that an 11-year-old actor David Bennent had to undergo in order to play Oskar, who goes from climbing bell towers alone to holding his own brother/son. It's quite a singular film, one whose title continually reminded us of a certain English new wave band. What did we love? What did we hate? How did that book end? How did New World Pictures get their hands on this in the first place? We discuss it all, and reveal next month's theme month! Do you know how much reggae is played in San Diego? Marc and Ryan do, and Erica sort of does, which makes the NWPP the perfect podcast to discuss Jamaica's first film, 1972's THE HARDER THEY COME, as we continue #FFFebruary (Foreign Film February)! A foreign film where the only language used is English? You bet! But, if you think you won't need subtitles, you'd be wrong (or from Jamaica)! Jimmy Cliff stars in this musical crime film as Ivanhoe Martin, based on a real figure from Jamaican history, who moves from the country to the city of Kingston to make his fortune and dabbles in both music and danger! From fixing up bikes to recording new club hits to taking down cops, director Perry Henzell's debut film not only introduced the Jamaican film industry to the world, but its soundtrack is often hailed as what brought reggae music to the United States, including several tracks from Jimmy Cliff himself! Picked up for distribution by Roger Corman's New World Pictures, the film has enjoyed cult status for many years. We examine Henzell's feelings about New World and Corman's thoughts on the film. We also discuss the trouble with autocorrect, the popularity of barbershop quartets, the proper temperature for a recording studio, when moms don't want you to follow them to the city, and the brand new beverage that is sweeping the country! Really, there's two and they both sound delicious! Don't miss this trip into another under-discussed gem from the New World Pictures vaults! We think after you listen to it, you'll "soon come" back for more! Welcome to Foreign film February! This month we will explore some of the foreign films of New World Pictures! FFF, as it's affectionately known, starts off with A LOT of heart (maybe even a little too much heart) with the tragic STORY OF ADELE H directed by Francois Truffaut. Set in 1863 - oh la la mon ami a period piece - we follow a young woman (Isabelle Adjani, POSSESSION) in her absolute QUEST in pursuit of her love interest Lieutenant Pinson (Bruce Robinson, director of WITHNAIL AND I). Using a fake identity, and the power of the pen, she tries to win Pinson's heart the old fashioned way, through love letters, stalking, hypnosis, and, of course, moving to Barbados! (If you couldn't tell already, Erica once studied French so naturally this film was juste dans son allée!) Listen in as we talk about how little Erica, the self proclaimed Francophile, actually knows about who Adele H really is. Let Marc's thoughts on hypnosis mesmerize you, and we know we aren't at final questions yet, but you know that we asked them. Foreign Film February may be the shortest month of the year, but trust us when we say, the films have never felt longer. It's time for another New World interview, this time with editor/director James Melkonian, who started as an intern at New World Pictures before climbing the ladder all the way to VP of Post-Production! James spent five years at New World, toiling away on a wide range of projects - GODZILLA 1985 (Ep. 108), THE PUNISHER (Ep. 121), REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS (Ep. 81) - just about everything at New World, especially once he took over the Post-Production department from Tony Randel (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, Ep. 106). From doing edit work on NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER (Ep. 29) and MAKING CONTACT (Ep. 40) to supervising the music for EAT AND RUN (from last year's #NOvember), James discusses a variety of New World films with us, including spilling some wild stories from THE GUNRUNNER (starring Kevin Costner), THE TELEPHONE (starring Whoopi Goldberg and directed by Rip Torn), and KNIGHTS OF THE CITY (starring Leon Isaac Kennedy)! Then, James explains how things started to change at New World and let him know that the end was near! Once New World closed its doors, James moved on to direct a couple movies post-New World, THE STONED AGE and THE JERKY BOYS. You don't want to miss this episode, which gives an unique inside look to how New World Pictures ran during the second ownership group! Thanks so much to James for appearing on the show! We wrap up #FANuary - where listeners chose what we watched across all our social media accounts - with Larry Cohen's 1976 classic GOD TOLD ME TO! Cohen's strange odyssey of a New York police detective whose investigation yields way more than he ever bargained for is truly a genius piece of cinema that only Larry Cohen could have created! Filled with an incredible cast (Academy Award winner Sandy Dennis, Andy Kaufman, Deborah Raffin, Tony Lo Bianco, and Richard Lynch from New World's DEATHSPORT, but, more importantly, BAD DREAMS) that rivals that of 1981's THE FOUR SEASONS, New World took two turns at releasing the film, which led to a fraught relationship between Cohen and New World head honcho Roger Corman., We discuss that along with other pressing questions, such as: how did Marc and Ryan's family feel about the TV show Space: 1999, what role Brad Dourif might have played, and debate whether walking barefoot in an airport is the same as doing so in a city. Don't miss out on our #FANuary finale! Just accept it, no questions! For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/
Welcome to #FANuary, where we talk about the movies you, the listener, asked us to discuss. Our first entry in #FANuary is 1987's TAX ATTACK 87, a Learning Corporation of America production staring comedian Robert Klein (SNL). Learning Corporation of America was owned by New World Pictures and focused on educational videos like In the FOR SAFETY'S SAKE: IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD starring Gary Coleman. By the way, if you haven't listened to our episode on that video, do yourself a favor and check it out. TAX ATTACK 87 is meant to be an instructional video for how to complete your annual taxes using the new laws that were introduced in 1986. It's equal parts educational video and live action children's board game. Given that children don't file taxes and adults don't typically need board games to learn, it's anyone's guess who the target audience is for this little slice of New World Pictures americana. We leave no stone unturned looking for deductions and credits in TAX ATTACK 87. Why is Robert Klein arguing with a off-screen IRS agent? Ryan has a solid theory. Erica gets immediately bored when Marc explains how to play craps. Ryan shares a story about going to comedy traffic school with his mom. Erica sings a banger of an opening song. Both Ryan and Marc share familial memories of watching the America's Cup when it was held in San Diego. This, of course, bores Erica even more. We even make a sneaky Twin Peaks reference even though we couldn't have anticipated the passing of David Lynch (RIP) only a couple days after the recording. Seriously though, Dune is one of Marc's favorite movies and he thinks its way better than the Denis Villenueve version.
It's that time again, the most wonderful time of the year: award season! And no award show is more prestigious than the Worldies, the only show that covers all the movies we covered last year! It's a celebration! And joining us to hand out these very real and important awards are a few of our former guests and NWPPVIPs like We invited former guests and NWPPVIPs to help us present these prestigious awards including: Erin Dawn, host of the Manic Movie Monday Podcast Jason "Neumie" Neuman (NWPPVIP and host of the After These Messages Sketch Comedy Podcast Dirk Marshall, host of the VH US Podcast; follow VH US here) Peter Fluet, from ep. 32: STAR CRYSTAL Chris Iannacone, co-host of the Get Me Another Podcast Greg Andersson, NWPPVIP and writer/editor for Forbes (see his work here) Dunbar Dicks (follow him here) We also rank our top 5 and bottom 5 from 2024, and discuss the year overall. A huge thanks to the guests we've had the opportunity to interview on this podcast, our guest presenters, and to all of you, our audience, for listening to the New World Pictures Podcast. On to 2025! We are wrapping up the merry month of #DIEcember II: Slay Bells Ring with a well-known cult classic: 1986's CHOPPING MALL aka KILLBOTS. This Nearly New World film was written and directed by Jim Wynorski in his first film for Roger and Julie Corman following working at New World in the publicity department. Join us as we fangirl on malls, robots, and snacks! We discuss the Sherman Oaks Galleria, Erica's work history, and we introduce new sponsorship opportunities for Better Cheddars. You listening Betty Cheds? Be our sponsor! While we know we aren't at final questions yet we must know "Have you seen CHOPPING MALL?" Don't miss this dive into a gory, sexy NWPP favorite!
We continue #DIEcember 2: Slay Bells Ring with another obscure slasher, 1984's THE INITIATION. This one is filled with family secrets, sharp hand rakes, and hot - temperature hot - sex. It's a movie about the power of dreams or at least the power of attraction that comes from participating in a sleep study. It's about a mother's sacrifice, and how, no matter what you do, it doesn't matter. It's about real dads and fake dads and dressing up like a penis to a party, only to get murdered in an empty mall. Listen as we discuss this early entry into New World Pictures' second ownership group output, released the same year as ANGEL and CHILDREN OF THE CORN. You may ask yourself: could a crowd of people with lit candles enter my room while I'm asleep without me noticing? Is it ethical for a teaching assistant to date a student? How comfortable would it be to have sex on a stack of rugs? Enjoy this slice of 1980's slasher history, as only the NWPP crew can deliver!
We kick off #DIEcember 2: Slay Bells Ring with everyone's character rich slasher, 1983's MOUNTAINTOP MOTEL MASSACRE. Or, if you'd prefer, MOUNTAINTOP MOTEL. Or, as we would call it, "MOTEL MASSACRE NOT ON A MOUNTAIN". Staring Bill Thurman (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW), Anna Chappell (THE MAN IN THE MOON), and Major Brock, a guy who was working as a baggage handler for Delta before director, Jim McCullough Jr. found him and put him in this movie. We spend quite a bit of time on this subject alone. MOUNTAINTOP MOTEL MASSACRE is one of those age old stories about a woman who is released from a psychiatric institution, finds her daughter Lorie practicing witchcraft (not really) in their basement, kills her, acquires a bloodlust and attempts to kill every guest at her rundown roadside motel. You know, "the ush". We are joined for this episode by Ryan Verril, host of The Disc Connected podcast and the Executive Director of Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. Ryan helps us navigate a myriad of new discoveries not yet revealed in any previous episode including, Marc's inability to differentiate a rabbit from a guinea pig and Marc's new live podcast, "The Semanticast" where he criticizes the way people say things. Thus far, it's not getting the kind of listenership that you'd expect. We also talk about the wrong way to leave your job, when to reveal a lie or keep it to yourself, and the challenges that come with a snakebite to the face. And when we say, "snakebite" we mean, "snakebit". Why? Listen and find out. We end #NOvember, where we watch movies with originally said "no" to, with QUENNIE, a 1987 TV Miniseries made by New World Television and, later, released by New World Video. An adaptation of a novel by Michael Korda which told the story of his real-life aunt, the actress Merle Oberon. Now, Korda's aunt may be real, but the story is, well, let's just say Michael had fun filling in the details. What true and what's not, we may never know, but we do our best to sort it out. The series starred Mia Sara, fresh from New World's APPRENTICE TO MURDER, as Queenie, and Kirk Douglas as a movie producer based on Korda's uncle Alexander. In a story that starts in India, travels to England and back again, Queenie goes from a young student to a exotic dancer to actress. She could have had more jobs, but, as it turns out, it's hard for pretty people to get jobs. It's also difficult for some people to smoke cigars or play a woodwind instrument, but easy for some to know the timing of their demise. There's a lot going on, but we dig deep into it anyway, because, well, it's #NOvember! It's #NOvember, where we talk about all the movies we previously said "no" to, and we're kickstarting it with 1986's EAT AND RUN, written by the father/son team of Stand and Christopher Hart and directed by Christopher. it stars Ron Silver as a Detective on the trail of an alien who is eating Italian people in New York City! The poster proclaims it's a "comedy with taste," but where did Marc, Erica, and Ryan fall in their opinions about it? You'll have to listen to find out! Enjoy this trip through one of New World's forgotten films, in which the following topics are also discussed: pseudonyms, anti-ASMR, and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 4! We were shocked to discover that 1987's Adventures in Babysitting doesn't have a DVD or Blu Ray audio commentary. After interviewing screenwriter David Simkins in 2022, we asked if he would be willing to record an audio commentary for Adventures in Babysitting and, to our delight, he agreed to do it. In typical NWPP fashion, the recording didn't go exactly as planned. At roughly 6 minutes into the movie, the audio of the film can be heard during the commentary. We've done our best to reduce the film's audio track but it was impossible to totally remove it. We recommend turning the audio down on your TV or device, and let our audio take over. One other call out, we recorded the audio commentary watching the PG-13 version of the movie not the one on Disney+. Enough with the caveats. David shares funny and insightful behind-the-scenes stories and talks about how the movie came together including working with Debra Hill and Lynda Obst. We discuss the challenges of shooting both in Chicago and Canada. David talks about how the famous blues bar scene came together, casting Elizabeth Shue, working with Chris Columbus and how Sara's obsession with Thor came to be. It's We believe this is the only audio commentary available for Adventures in Babysitting. We can't thank David Simkins enough for agreeing to do this with us. We hope you enjoy.
We end #ROBOtober like we with every October, with a franchise ranking episode! This time, to celebrate our 5th year as a podcast, we are talking about all the ALIEN movies! Roger Corman had a shot at ALIEN at one point, as we discussed in a previous episode, so this is a "Nearly New World" franchise for us! But, watching (and re-watching) these films bring up a lot of emotions and memories, so don't be surprised if the picks get personal. Listen along and delight in our choices or get frustrated at them! Then head to your nearest social media platform and tell us how we screwed up or got it very, very right! Head to www.newworldpicturespodcast.com to find all our socials and episodes! We continue with #ROBOtober, our exploration of all the weird things new World has released, with our first live show! And what did we subject an audience to? A true curio from the New World library, an educational film starring Gary Coleman about being safe in your neighborhood! How on Earth did this end up in New world's hands? We explain! How uncool was Ryan growing up? He'll explain! What the hell was this? We'll attempt to explain! You don't want to miss this live episode recorded at the Broadwater Theater in Hollywood, with appearances from past guests like Peter Fluet (Episode 33: STAR CRYSTAL), Ali Davis (GODZILLA 1985), Dunbar Dicks (GEORGIA PEACHES), and Chris Iannacone (LADY FRANKENSTEIN)! We continue #ROBOtober with 1972's THE CREMATORS, a movie that doesn't include a single robot but that's okay because #ROBOtober is all about the weird movies made by New World Pictures. You wouldn't be to blame for punching holes in the second part of that last sentence but we will move on. Considered one of the cheapest movies made by New World Pictures, THE CREMATORS is a science-fiction, horror movie about a minivan-sized Cheeto ball that terrorizes a small lakeside town. The Cheeto ball feeds on human flesh but otherwise leaves everything else alone. It also get's its powers from little rocks. If you hold the rocks with your hands, they will leave an unremovable glitter stain not unlike Ace Frehley's outfit from the cover of KISS Alive 2. THE CREMATORS is more than the sum of it's parts. Hospital emergency rooms look like the living room of a house, laboratories look like the wood paneled basement of your Uncle Flint's house, and the audio.... the audio is almost impossible understand which is unfortunate since a lot of the dialogue takes place over ham radio. Speaking of which, looks like we at The New World Pictures Podcast will be gifting each other ham radios for the holidays. Thank you, CREMATORS For more podcasts on the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://linktr.ee/someonesfavoriteproductions
Welcome to #ROBOtober, where we will be discussing things you never knew New World Pictures released, starting with the 1988 Robocop Animated Series! Created by Marvel Productions, which was owned by New world at the time, this Saturday morning cartoon could've been a staple of your childhood weekend viewing, but only lasted for 12 episodes! We will go through the first episode and discuss the series as a whole, including our favorites, as we try to answer some of the questions the series raises, such as, why does everyone hate Robocop so much? How does the rest of the country work with OCP? Why does Robocop ignore his partner's obvious love for him? And can Detroit get a break? Don't miss out on this start of our wildest month ever! We end #SEXtember Part Deux, our 2nd annual look at the sexy films of New World Pictures, with PARTY INCORPORATED aka PARTY GIRLS, a 1989 comedy directed by adult film director Chuck Vincent and starring adult film star Marilyn Chambers, who also starred in New World's RABID from David Cronenberg. The film centers around Marilyn Saunders, who is famous somehow and has a TV show about her life that is being filmed that is very popular with the bar/sleepover crowds. We discuss this movie's wild history, which drawer is the best for hiding your illicit material, when exactly party planning industry became a thing, and we offer a sneak peek at one of the other varied podcasts we are working on! Plus, Human Resources drops by and much more! We continue #SEXtember Part Deux by checking in on 1972's NIGHT CALL NURSES. Directed by Jonathan Kaplan, in his debut, and produced by Julie Corman, this is the third in Roger Corman's "NURSES" movie. Quentin Tarantino called it "a sexy version of Three Coins in the Fountain." IYKYK. We talk about the many, many, MANY plots this movie has to offer, the subtle product placement, and learn about Erica's favorite after work activity - no spoilers - but it's not what you would think! What is a night call nurse you ask? You'll have to listen in to find out!
Our latest interview is with someone we have hoped to talk with for some time, director, writer, and actor Katt Shea! We go through her early career where Shea appeared as an actor in a few Corman-produced films before stalking Roger to get an opportunity to direct her debut feature, 1987's STRIPPED TO KILL! Shea describes the key to landing an audition, how acting in PSYCHO III ending up helping her sell STRIPPED TO KILL to Roger, her difficulties after directing the 1991 hit POISON IVY, and what it was like to work for Roger, both good and bad. Don't miss out on this great conversation with Katt Shea! We can think of no better way to kick off #SEXtember Part Deux than with Katt Shea's 1987 thriller, STRIPPED TO KILL. This isn't one of those movies the skimps (wink) on the stripping. There's a lot of it in STRIPPED TO KILL. So much, in fact, that it broke our titty count machine. We talk about strange rules for strip clubs, the challenge of keeping the patrons excited during the 15-20 minutes it takes the DJ to tear down and build a new set for the next stripper and, of course, which time of year muscles are poisonous. Which muscles? You have to listen to find out. And while STRIPPED TO KILL has a whole lot of stripping, that is not the sum of it's parts. There are meat sculptures, police department employees that work at] brothels, telekinetic fire starting, and a little double identity (we're not talking about the boobies). Finally, Ryan and Erica teach Marc how to properly tell a joke and we discover a unique new business opportunity that you need to hear about. We are all going to get rich.
We continue the laughs this week in our #HAHAugust episode. Polish your jokes and put on your suspenders as you take the mic at 1983's THE FUNNY FARM! Written and directed by Ron Clark in his debut after working with Mel Brooks on the scripts for HIGH ANXIETY and THE SILENT MOVIE, this stars Peter Aykroyd, Howie Mandel, and even more Canadian comics. The film follows a budding comedian (Miles Chapin) and a group of ambitious young comics as they strive to make it in the LA comedy scene, but only one can find a steady girlfriend and a club to work in after only one night in town (also Chapin). In this episode we are joined by special return guest Ali Davis, who you may remember from our previous episodes COVER GIRL MODELS, and GODZILLA 1985. Laugh with us as we learn about improv for dogs, debate if strip clubs have bathrooms, and reminisce about each of our cross-country drives.
We continue #HAHAugust, our celebration of the comedies of New World Pictures, with an interview about one of classic comedies to emerge from Roger Corman's New World Pictures, 1979's ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL! Joining us to talk about the film is author Stephen B. Armstrong, who just wrote a book on the subject called I Want You Around: The Ramones and the Making of Rock 'n' Roll High School, editor Mark Helfrich, who got his start on the movie as a production assistant and assistant editor, and the movie's director, Allan Arkush, who also spent years working at New World editing trailers for the company. If you are a fan of this movie, you don't want to miss this episode! We discuss the many iterations of the script, Arkush's journey with the Ramones, how New World fought the movie internally, and much more! For more about Stephen, visit his website, https://stephen-b-armstrong.com/, and buy his book wherever books are sold! We are kicking off #HAHAugust, which could be the most hilarious month of the year! Put your feet on the coffee table and don't use a coaster while you hop onto YouTube and feast your eyes on 1984's BAD MANNERS (aka GROWING PAINS), co-written and directed by Robert "Bobby" Houston, and starring the late, great Martin Mull and Karen Black as foster parents who find that their new addition can't separate himself from his previous family of orphans, one of which is played by a young Pamela Adlon (King of the Hill, Better Things, Facts of Life). In this episode we are joined by special guest Peter Fluet, who you may remember from previous episodes Power Pack, Generation X, and STAR CRYSTAL. With Peter's help we put manners aside to attempt to make sense of this rude, and truly ridiculous film. Ryan shares a truly shocking bit of research, Marc crunches cars and, of course, Erica keeps the titty count. For more information on the podcast, visit www.newworldpodcast.com.
We talk with former New World Pictures editors, Kevin Sewelson and Dave Parker. Both Kevin and Dave started out as trailer editors during the last few years of New World Picture's existence. Kevin also edited In the Aftermath and we talk about the challenge of creating a story blending live action with Mamoru Ishii's Angel's Egg. Kevin and Dave describe the challenges of creating a story and dialogue to weave the two different stories into a cohesive unit. We learn about the set in Fontana and the rock bottom pricing New World Pictures paid to shoot there after Terminator 2 had completed filming at the same location. This episode is chock full of interesting behind-the-scenes stories. We learn about their early days at New World Pictures pulling all-nighters in the editing room in the former Lion's Gate studio. We discuss the slow demise of the studio and new ventures that sprung from the talent that left. We also get to discuss a couple NWPP favorites including 18 Again, Heathers and Flowers in the Attic. For Marc, we spend spend a little time discussing Angel of Death and Dave tells an incredible story about a never-seen trailer he cut for Hellraiser 2. It's a fascinating and fun interview and we're incredibly grateful to Dave and Kevin for taking time to chat with us. Enjoy the interview.
We continue #SciFiJuly presents #DystopianSummer with 1988's IN THE AFTERMATH, a film (mostly) sprung from New World Video unless you lived in Australia! Directed by Carl Colpaert, the then Head of post-production for New World (and who would go on to direct and produce a variety of indie films), IN THE AFTERMATH is the truly the work of two directors, with Mamoru Oshii's 1985 anime film ANGEL'S EGG also sharing the screen with Colpaert's live-action footage of the apocalypse. Joining us for this episode is returning guest Dirk Marshall, who we had to have on after he covered ANGEL'S EGG on the VH US podcast (https://www.vh-us.com/). What did Dirk think of the blend of the two films? Listen to find out! Did Erica realize it was two films? Listen and find out! What is Marc's pet peeve about July 4th parties? You'll have to listen to find out! Follow Dirk here: https://x.com/VHUS_Podcast For more information about the podcast, go to https://newworldpicturespodcast.com/.
Our #SciFiJuly Presents #DystopianSummer continues with an interview with DEAD END DRIVE-IN director Brian Trenchard-Smith! From the beginnings with the script to the purchase of the movie by New World Pictures at the Cannes Film Festival, Brian tells us all about the journey of his film, while also telling tales about a few of his other films, including STRIKE OF THE PANTHER and THE MAN FROM HONG KONG! Perhaps fittingly, Brian spoke to us while sitting outside during a heat wave, but that didn't damper his spirits as told us about the importance of having a good mechanic, gave a sweet eulogy to the late, great Grant Page, and described how they shot two stunt sequences for DEAD END DRIVE-IN on the same day. Don't miss this interview with an exploitation legend!
We continue with #SciFiJuly Presents #DystopianSummer with a Nearly New World that is very close to the hearts of (most of) the hosts of this show: John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. No, this was not released by New World Pictures, but, fret not, we will explain how we fit into our Nearly New World series. Will the hosts gush about the movie? Yes! Will they offer criticisms? Kind of, a little! They will also discuss why this movie is so important to (most of) them, offer their own Letterboxd synopses, and of course, compare the original to ESCAPE FROM L.A. Will Henry Thomas ever listen to this show after this? Doubtful! But you can listen to every episode and follow along with the #DystopianSummer here: https://newworldpicturespodcast.com/
We kick off #SCI-FI-JULY Presents: Dystopian Summer with one of the all time classic Australian dystopian action films, 1986's DEAD END DRIVE IN. Directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith and starring Ned Manning and Natalie McCurry, DEAD END DRIVE IN has everything you want from a movie set in a dystopian future - crazy car chases, crazier outfits and a drive in movie theater where you can get in, but you can't get out. With a killer soundtrack and a wild set piece, it's hard not to love DEAD END DRIVE IN. We were so excited to talk about this movie that we had to break away from our usual episode structure. Why wait for "final questions" when we can ask throughout the episode? We talk about unconventional workout routines, Marc's love of Pepsi (of course), the evolution of drive-in theater technology, fashion forward hairstyles and blanket issues. This episode also holds the record for the most times we've said the word, "dystopian" in a single episode.
We continue #JuneVROOM with 1971's ANGELS HARD AS THEY COME, co written and produced by Jonathan Demme and starring Scott Glenn as Long John and Charles Dierkop as the General, two rival Bikers who are at odds over the murder of an innocent woman. Also starring the one and only Gary Busey as Henry, the peace seeking desert Hippie. Join Long Marc, Glasses, and Dome as they reminisce about their first viewing of this film, the pros and cons of ketosis, and dissect the sights and smells of the biker ghost town. For more about the podcast, go to https://newworldpicturespodcast.com/.
We continue #JuneVROOM with 1976's THE GREAT TEXAS DYNAMITE CHASE starring Claudia Jennings and Jocelyn Jones as two women who decide to go on a crime spree of robbing banks with dynamite! But, is that the best plan for robbing a bank? How harmful is too much grout in a shower? And what exactly are "meats and cheese?" We attempt to answer all these questions, plus, we dissect the sound of a dud piece of dynamite, Erica finds herself turning a corner with this month's selections, Ryan get emotional, and Marc gets personal with a story of childhood dynamite. Rubs your hands together in excitement for this one and sit down on your bun and listen!
We are kicking off #juneVROOM otherwise known as J. Marc's Joyous June with Gone in 60 Seconds. Not THAT Gone in 60 Seconds. The original from 1974 directed by and starring H. B. Halicki (THE JUNKMAN). As is customary with the New World Pictures podcast we take a deep dive into a movie that starts slow and ends with a 40 minute car chase scene that might be one of the best ever filmed. It's a really great scene. You should watch it. Erica reveals to Ryan and Marc that her Uncle owned a peculiar car security company who's jingle may or may not have been the inspiration of "Welcome to the Jungle". Marc proclaims to the voice and face of a new generation. We talk a lot about Long Beach (CA not NY) and the state of LAX in 1974 and we introduce new sponsorship opportunities for Pepsi. You listening Pepsi? Be our sponsor.
Sadly friends, it's the end of Marc's Miserable MARVELous May II, where we celebrate the New World Pictures era of Marvel, and we wanted to send it off with a celebration and ranking of the 1970s and 1980s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with our special guest - returning from last year's 90s MCU ranking - filmmaker and actor Tarik Davis. We rank our top 8 from this list of Marvel movie classics: Spider-Man (1977), Dr. Strange (1978), Captain America and Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1979), Howard the Duck (1986), The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988), The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989) and The Punisher (1989). And how we rank these will surprise you! We also discuss a potential a new nickname for Erica and Tarik's friendship. We talk about the movie selection process of Little Ryan. And, of course, we talk about that time Marc opened up and PRAISED a Marvel movie! You won't want to miss this! For more about Tarik, head here: https://tarikdavis.com/. For more about the podcast, go to www.newworldpicturespodcast.com.
Roger Corman passed away on May 9, 2024, and we knew we wanted to do something special to commemorate his passing, so we are lucky to be joined by director/editors Allan Arkush (HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL), Allan Holzman (FORBIDDEN WORLD), and Tony Randel (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2) to discuss their careers and memories working with Roger. We hope you enjoy this tribute. Hail to the king!
Marc's Miserable MARVELous May II continues with 1989's THE PUNISHER! For this Dolph Lundgren classic, we brought out the big guns with our friend and New World Super Fan Justin Grams! Will Marc withstand the very first Punisher comic book adaptation? Will he finally like a Marvel movie? Anything can happen when you combine producer Robert Mark Kamen (KARATE KID/THE TRANSPORTER) and director Mark Goldblatt (DEAD HEAT)! Justin, Ryan, and Erica will try to keep him entertained with a possible Punisher musical, the lowdown on New World Pictures (Australia) and all the deleted footage from the workprint,, and the ultimate cure for sewer throat! But will he be able to look past the "American accents" of the Australian actors? Listen to find out!
In this episode we continue the triumphant return of Marc's Miserable MARVELous May, where we talk about the Marvel movies and TV shows made by New World Pictures. Tune in for exclusive scoops, classic sayings, and stories so incredible you have to hear them to believe them.
It's the return of Marc's Miserable MARVELous May where we talk about the Marvel movies and TV shows made by New World Pictures. We've invited Peter Fluet from Ep. 85: Generation X and Ep. 33: Star Crystal to kick off this special month with the memorable yet hard-to-find TV pilot, Power Pack. This episode is full of New World Pictures Podcast "firsts". It's the first Marvel movie or TV show that none of us had seen before. It's the first movie or TV show we've discussed with a runtime of under 30 minutes, but that didn't stop us for talking about it for a full hour! This episode is a prime example of your hosts and Peter simply having a good time and it shows. You get it all. Peter Breaks down the terrifying premise of Power Pack comic book while also creating an account on Letterboxd in real time. Erica does a bang up horse imitation.
