*From the desk of Pete* Once thought to be "Lost Media," Spider Baby has thankfully been rediscovered and given a proper Blue Ray release by Arrow. The last film of legendary genre actor Lon Chaney Jr. puts out a powerful performance in this ominous, horrifying rendition of an "Old Dark House" film and Sid Haig flexes his acting chops without ever saying a word. Charlie blew Pete and Anna's mind when he suggested that Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses is a spiritual remake and the more they talked about it the more they agreed. This one's in the public domain so it's easy to find and the entire cast suggests you spend the 80 minutes to experience a true cult film.

We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in.  Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. The Werewolf of London (1935), The Wolf Man (1941), and She-Wolf of London (1946) When the night falls and the full moon rises, it is time to talk about werewolves. Not just any werewolves, but the ones that came from Universal Studios. While still riding the wave of their  successes with the horror titles of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man, Universal's front office continued to look for their next big monster, which spawned The Werewolf of London (1935). While it wasn't the success they'd hoped, they would try it again in 1941 on the second wave of monster films, which was a big hit. And like the curse of lycanthropy, things weren't always particualrly good with this particular sub-genre. We cover the three official titles from Universal that have the werewolf (one in title alone!) by themselves, and not any of the monster-rallys that we'll cover in the future. Will they still hold up to modern audiences? Are they worthy of their "classic monster" title? Listen and find out. Films mentioned in this episode: The Ape (1940), The Black Cat (1934), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Brute Man (1946), The Cat People (1942), Calling Dr. Death (1943), C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud (1989), Climax (1944), Dead Man's Eyes (1944), Dracula (1931), Dracula's Daughter (1936), Dracula vs Frankenstein (1971), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932), Frankenstein (1931), Frozen Ghost (1945), Great Expectations (1934), House of Frankenstein (1944), House of Dracula (1945), House of Horror (1946), Jungle Woman (1944), The Invisible Man (1933), The Invisible Man Returns (1940), The Invisible Man's Revenge (1944), The Invisible Woman (1940), The Mad Ghoul (1943), The Mummy (1932), The Mummy's Curse (1944), The Mummy's Ghost (1944), Night of the Howling Beast (1975), Of Mice and Men (1939), Pillow of Death (1945), She-Wolf of London (1946), Son of Dracula (1943), Spider Baby (1967), Strange Confession (1945), Troll (1986), The Weird Woman (1944), The Werewolf of London (1935), The Wolf Man (1941), The Werewolf (1913), Werewolf's Shadow (1971), The White Wolf (1914), Wolf Blood: A Tale of the Forest (1925), The Wolfman (1915), The Wolfman (1923)

I used to work at a magazine for video store owners. By the time I'd gotten there, it was a vanity publication for the gigantic red-headed stepchildren of Hollywood: home entertainment companies. You know, the big money and focus went into the movies heading to cinema, and direct-to-video/DVD/Blu-ray and the home release of those movies was … not as cool, not as big, etc. My interviewee, Mike Keller, has been collecting videos, DVDs and Blu-rays for a long time now. We discuss the transition we've all lived through: It seemed like everyone was buying video in various formats for their home collections … and then … they weren't. I mean, everything's streaming, right? But Keller keeps on keepin' on. After all, you never know when that streaming service is going to get rid of that TV show or movie … and then … no more watching for you! If you like movies, movie collecting, collecting, or walks down Memory Lane … you'll love this chat. And, yes, that's Keller's wall of awesome home entertainment in his own home ... bask in its glory ... :) Last bonus! Because Keller's favorite genre of movie is horror, he ponied up a couple lists for you to peruse. Thanks, Mike! You can find out where to watch these streaming on JustWatch.com or go buy new or used copies on your favorite e-commerce website ... or, y'know, check your local library!    15 Horror Essentials (that probably everybody has heard of, but they're still essential!) In this episode, we analyze The Black Guy Dies First: Black Horror Cinema from Fodder to Oscar (Gallery Books, Saga Press) written by Horror Noire's Dr. Robin Means Coleman and Mark H. Harris. The Black Guy Dies First traces Black horror history from its modern breakthrough with 1968's Spider Baby and Night of the Living Dead, through Blaxploitation to Jordan Peele's cultural upheaval and everything in between. Thank you to Simon and Schuster, Gallery Books, Saga Press for sending us this book to review! As a bonus we do a light reading of zombie rom-com Boy Eats Girl (2005), directed by Stephen Bradley and starring Samantha Mumba and David Leon. She continues to contemplate what to do with her life and who she really is and decides not to steal. Sneaking out of the store, she is confronted by Jerry Hunt, who tries to stop her. However, Spider-Woman manages to escape, although Jerry manages to grab her mask and pull it off, and swears that he's seen her face before. Returning to the apartment that she lives in, all too aware of everyone's fear of her because they can sense she is more than human.[Continuity 1] Once Jessica Drew returns home she decides to retire for the evening. As Jessica sleeps, she dreams of the brief time she spent with Modred the Mystic and how he used his magic to reveal the truth about her past.[Continuity 2] He revealed she wasn't one of the New Men as she was told by Hydra's Otto Vermis.[Continuity 3] In reality, she was a human being. She was Jessica Drew, the daughter of Jonathan and Miriam Drew. They worked with Herbert Wyndham on Wundagore Mountain. Jessica fell victim to radiation poisoning, and her father treated her. Her mother, however, would eventually die. Failing to find a cure for Jessica's condition, Jonathan would leave Wundagore, leaving Wyndham to try and find a cure for the girl's radiation poisoning. Infusing her with the DNA of a spider, he put her in suspended animation for years, slowing her aging process until she developed an immunity. Years later, long after Wyndham became the High Evolutionary, Jessica was cured of the radiation poisoning and when she was awoken it was discovered that she had fantastic powers she would later use as Spider-Woman. Jessica wakes up screaming, but eventually calms down. She thinks about how after she later became a brainwashed servant of Hydra under the command of Otto Vermis and vows never to let that happen to herself again. The next day, Jessica tries to find a job, but during her search, she is spotted once more by Jerry Hunt, who once more tries to stop her. Running in an alley, Jessica changes into Spider-Woman and decides to fight back. Tossing a lamp post at Jerry, she realizes that he could be killed. Quickly she pushes Jerry to safety and flees the scene. Back home, she decides to do a better disguise job at disguising herself. To do so she alters her mask and dyes her hair black. Going out as Spider-Woman once more, she would later find Jerry and the authorities trying to stop some crooks who are armed with hi-tech lasers. She recognizes these men as Chauncy and Trevor. two men she encountered with the Thing and later Modred.[Continuity 5] Jerry is injured in the crossfire prompting Spider-Woman to swoop in and get him to safety. She then turns her attention to the two gunmen and discovers that she is immune to the unique radiation emitted from their weapons. She easily knocks out the two men with her venom blasts then goes to check on Jerry. As she is distracted, Chauncy recovers and manages to shoot her from behind. Quickly recovering from the blast, Spider-Woman whirls around and takes him down with another venom blast. Unsure of what her part in everything is, the police attempt to arrest Spider-Woman, despite Jerry Hunt's protests. Spider-Woman grabs Jerry and flies away to a hospital, where she administers a blood transfusion allowing him to recover from his injuries much faster than normal. Not only is he surprised to learn that Spider-Woman saved his life, he is also informed that the captured criminals had stolen metal plates that they thought they could use to create billions in counterfeit money. However, a recent change in currency in the United Kingdom made this plot utterly useless.[Continuity 6] When they try to explain how Jerry's superior, Nick Fury, responded to all of this they notice that Hunt's mind is miles away as he is still thinking about Spider-Woman. Jerry comes to the realization that the masked woman is unlike any female he has met before and that, no matter what, he wants Spider-Woman. VENOM BLASTS (things to look out for in episode)!! Our first DOUBLE FEATURE episode covers Jack Hill's Spider Baby (1967) and Rob Zombie's The Munsters (2022). Why these films together? Well, the straightforward answer is that we watched them the same week—and Sid Haig. But we do weave some viable thematic and cultural webs between the two. We cover incest, cannibalism, Kanye, why secondary writing is terrible, what we've been doing wrong, the DSM-5, first deaths, and quite a bit more. This is a sprawling, classic Scary Thoughts episode and one of our best in months. It turns out weed actually does enhance some performances.

Darts and Letters is a show about the politics of ideas, and this week we're searching for progressive politics in strange places… such as pro-wrestling. There have been 37 Wrestlemanias. That's a lot of wrestling. And a lot of entertainment for the millions of people who enjoy watching wrestling, including our host, Gordon Katic. Maybe you're a fan, maybe not. Fans and non-fans alike have often dismissed wrestling as frivolous. But there's more to wrestling than meets the tombstone piledriver. Pro wrestling is like a Rosetta Stone for our politics; It brought us one President, and a recent poll suggests it might give us another. On this episode, we jump from the top rope into the wild, layered, complex world of pro wrestling and the folks who love it. This is part of the week's theme of “ideas in strange places”. Darts and Letters is doing a different theme each week until we launch the new season on September 18. First (@10:46), Steve and Larson are the hosts of Going in Raw: A Pro Wrestling Podcast. They break down the history of Vince McMahon as a boss, character, and more — including what happens when the lines between the two become blurred inside and outside of the ring. PLUS: the full unedited interview is available on our Patreon. Subscribe today. Next (@37:15), Brian Jansen is a lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Maine who writes on professional wrestling and labour. Wrestlers are workers, and as workers, face challenges shared by other workers — and some unique to their profession. And their fans, it turns out, are more progressive than you might think. Then (@53:06), the Spider Baby, Terrance Griep, is the world's first openly gay wrestler. He wrestles in the Midwest Independent Wrestling Scene. He takes us into the world of wrestling, the building and presentation of a character, the immersive theatricality that is part of the experience for both wrestlers and their fans, and the “civil war” between the profession's old and new guard. Finally (@1:09:30), Heather Levi is an anthropologist at Temple University who wrote her dissertation on lucha libre in Mexico. She even trained in lucha libre. She explores the fascinating world of a sport that is closely bound up with the country in which it thrives and finds a way of making meaning that brings together writers, wrestlers, and the public. —————————-SUPPORT THE SHOW—————————- You can support the show for free by following or subscribing on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or whichever app you use.
