Send us a textOver a decade ago, Eric Halborg and Cole Rudy met as part of the Denver indie music scene. At the time, Halborg played and wrote for the punk band The Swayback (he currently also plays for Wabi), and Rudy played for the groups Barnacle and Varlet. Striking conversations, the two realized they both loved old-school blues.Halborg had practiced harmonica privately for a few years, finding time in the car after his stereo was stolen. When Rudy realized this, he asked Halborg to play for him, the first time Halborg had played harmonica for anyone else. From there, the two decided to form their own group, with Halborg providing guitar, harmonica, and vocals and Rudy providing guitar, lap steel, mandolin, and additional vocals.Eventually, the two fleshed out the lineup and thus the group's sound by adding a drummer/percussionist and a bassist – Carl Sorensen serves as the former, with the latter role previously filled by Casey Sidwell and currently by Hunter Roberts. However, Halborg and Rudy are still the core of the group, called Dragondeer, creating the basic structure of the songs that the whole band fleshes out. Halborg loves the spontaneous back-and-forth among the musicians when he performs with the group on stage, and he loves directly experiencing the energy of the crowd and fellow musicians. He hopes the audience recognizes the group's love of their performances and feels inspired by their energy.Despite sharing a name and having the same December 31 birthday, Tom Hamilton Jr (born in 1978) is not connected to Aerosmith's bassist (not a junior and born in 1951). However, the younger Tom Hamilton has still had a storied music career. His father (Tom Hamilton Sr., of course) started as a drummer, and by the time Junior and his older brother Jim were born, seinor primarily played bass, performing in Philadelphia with a classic rock/blues band. For Junior, growing up with a band constantly playing in his basement, being a musician was a normal vocation for his family. His father never pressured him to play, but Junior felt it was a way to connect and communicate – he never focused on the idea of being successful. Send us a Text Message.Boulder resident Jeremy Mohney has always had a passion for swing music. His grandfather often drove him around playing tapes of swing bands led by the likes of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Artie Shaw. He played in his school's jazz band, and he wanted to keep playing that music style once he left school. He's been gigging since his high school days in Boulder High, and he started The Jeremy Mohney Band over a decade ago as an outlet to consistently play.Among the people who have been involved in the band over the years are guitarist Chris Herbst, bass player Conner Hollingsworth, drummer Chris Carland, trumpet player Sonya Walker, guitarist, upright bassist, and vocalist Andrew Bonnis (currently based in Cleveland with his own solo career), bassist Hunter Roberts, guitarist and vocalist Greg Schochet (he and Mohney have played in each other's bands), Gypsy Swing Revue lead Elliot Reed, guitarist Dan Buller, drummer Greg Corcione, bassist and trombonist Gary Sloan, guitarist Alex Heffron, and bassist Will Kuepper, many of whom have been featured on Mohney's previous musical releases. The current lineup consists of Mohney, Cantor, Hollingsworth, and Carland. Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak. Originally recorded 1/4/23 Happy New Year everyone! I told you'd we back. The boys open things up by playing with Bruce's new White Elephant podcast light. Boys and their toys...right? Up next is holiday chatter. Discussion of Bruce's son's disastrous shredder work is followed up with praise for him getting a job. Then we segue into tonight's main event. In response to the glut of Hallmark movies around the holidays, Stephe took it upon himself to take on the Twelve Days of Liam. Yes, he watched twelve Liam Neeson movies so, thankfully, we don't have to. Here's the list: Honest Thief Blacklight Memory Unknown A Walk Among the Tombstones The A-Team (with lots of gunfire sound effects) Cold Pursuit Under Suspicion The Commuter Non-Stop Darkman Taken2 We all owe the man a debt of gratitude. Bruce shared his somewhat less arduous holiday viewing: Glass Onion Bullet Train Only Murders in the Building Then we spent an inordinate amount of time discussing Zardoz thanks to a meme Bruce posted. We ended with a rousing round of "What's on Your Desk?" - featuring the Dream of the Magi. What does that mean? Listen! We also mentioned Hunter Roberts' Dodge Neon bit. HERE IS THE PROMISED LINK.

We've all had that dream. You know, the one where you actually play the hero in the movie that is your life and make that bold choice to leave your job and your commute and move to the mountains. While most of us just wake up and plug back into the Matrix, some people actually follow their dream. On this week's podcast we talk to one of those people, our new friend, Hunter Roberts who's packing up his family, leaving Brooklyn and moving out to Squaw Valley.

Let’s Not ‘Do’ Lunch In episode 103 we featured Lisa Howlett, General Counsel, SVP and Secretary of Hunter Roberts Construction Group. Lisa ensures her organization has effective advice and representation working on legal issues related to construction, contracts, corporate transactions, real estate, labor/employment law as well as strategic business consulting and intellectual property matters. Lisa Howlett on LinkedIn Lisa learned early that the two key skills of in-house and outside counsel are listening and being responsive to the businessperson you’re assisting; learning what they’re trying to accomplish. Today, she hires outside counsel that cares and understands the personal and professional risk in-house attorneys are taking by bringing in outside counsel in with the hope they’ll provide valuable assistance that fulfills a business need. Establishing trust with outside counsel is important, and as matters change and organizations grow you can’t rely only on people you know. Continuously evaluate other outside counsel and be open to working with new people. Look for attorney’s that are prepared and knowledgeable but also willing to share ideas in their area of expertise. Save the meal invitations and trying to establish a business relationship by creating a social one first; no thank you. Invite Lisa or someone on her team to a CLE, have coffee before; or introduce her and her team to someone who can help them. Assist the team by providing something beneficial to the business. Social relationships don’t create business relationships; helping solve business problems creates business relationships. For Lisa and the businesses, she represents cost certainty is important. RFPs are done for larger opportunities and smaller opportunities are often sent to new firms on a trial basis. She looks for lawyers and firms that will work with her; that is willing to discuss alternative fees; looking for predictability where it exists breaking down the components of a deal and getting creative with overall costs. As willing as she is to recommend paying for the advice of a specialist partner; Lisa and her team want to manage and be fiscally responsible about components leading up to advice. Balancing alternatives to be efficient, including working with outside counsel for advice and in-house counsel and technology for document review her in-house department is stretching out in the new legal model. In today’s world, the management of information is key and in-house counsel sees value in the culling of information done by outside parties presenting information to clients in a usable format. Lisa is also a fan of co-utilizing technology recommended by the firms she’s working with. Jointly using technology shows a commitment to efficiency and the long-term relationship. Lisa’s advice to new lawyers just starting out? When looking to establish a professional network that could ultimately provide business for your practice Lisa suggests looking at your peers and building for tomorrow. When given the opportunity to bid on business make sure you convey the values of your firm. In-house legal is aligning hired legal staff with members of a business team they need to know that the firm and lawyers are in alignment with the mission of the client and the firm. Today’s legal industry lacks middle-level lawyers many left 2008-2010 exactly when law school attendance dropped. The opportunity exists and there are many different avenues for junior associates today.
