In past years, we've done a series called ‘Bikes vs Skis' where we've posed the question: Which bike company is most like which ski company? But this year, we're zooming out a bit, and instead are putting up the whole ski industry vs the bike industry, to identify the significant similarities or differences; assess the relative health of each; and see how the trends in one might align with trends in the other. Today, you'll hear from Blister reviewers Jonathan Ellsworth, Luke Koppa, David Golay, Simon Stewart, Kara Williard, and Xan Marshland.RELATED LINKS:BLISTER+ Get Yourself CoveredOur ‘Bikes vs Skis' Series:Bikes vs Skis, 4th Edition (2023): Part 1Bikes vs Skis, 4th Edition (2023): Part 2Bikes vs Skis, 4th Edition (2023): Part 3Bikes vs Skis, 3rd Edition (2021): Part 1Bikes vs Skis, 3rd Edition (2021): Part 2Bikes vs Skis, 2nd Edition (2020): Part 1Bikes vs Skis, 2nd Edition (2020): Part 2Bikes vs Skis, 1st Edition (2018): Part 1Bikes vs Skis, 1st Edition (2018): Part 2TOPICS & TIMES:Health of the Bike Industry (4:52)Volatility in the Ski Industry (12:11)Supply Chain Complexity (16:35)Which Categories are Growing or Shrinking? In recent years, technological advancements have permeated various aspects of outdoor sports, and skiing is no exception. The introduction of electric skis, particularly the innovative E-SKIMO, is revolutionizing the skiing experience by significantly enhancing uphill performance. This breakthrough technology combines the principles of electric bicycles with ski mountaineering, allowing skiers to ascend slopes with unprecedented ease and efficiency. How do Electric Skis Work? The core concept behind electric skis is to provide assistance that empowers skiers during uphill climbs. Traditionally, ski mountaineering, also known as ski touring or "skinning uphill," requires considerable physical exertion and stamina. However, with the integration of a battery, motor, and sophisticated sensors, E-SKIMO drastically reduces the effort needed to ascend. According to the developers of this technology, skiers can expect to travel uphill four times faster than they would with conventional skis. This remarkable speed enhancement is a game-changer for both recreational skiers and serious mountaineers, enabling them to explore more terrain in less time. The mechanics of the electric ski system are equally impressive. Each ski is equipped with a motor that drives a rotating belt, providing traction as the skier ascends. This innovative design allows for synchronized movement, with the motors communicating to ensure a smooth and efficient uphill experience. The lightweight construction of the components is another significant advantage, as skiers can detach the battery and motor once they reach the summit, reducing the burden during the downhill journey.Standing Out in the SnowOne of the most compelling aspects of electric skis is their ability to adapt to varying snow conditions and terrain. The E-SKIMO employs artificial intelligence to analyze factors such as snow type, slope steepness, and skier weight. This data-driven approach allows the skis to deliver power in a controlled and natural manner, maintaining balance and stability. The algorithm behind this technology is designed to ensure that skiers do not lose control due to excessive power, which is a critical consideration in a sport where balance is paramount.Durability is a key concern for any outdoor equipment, and the developers of E-SKIMO are focused on ensuring that the system can withstand the rigors of use. While the longevity of the belt system is still being evaluated, the aim is to make it last for several seasons, allowing skiers to enjoy the benefits of electric assistance without frequent replacements. The excitement surrounding electric skis is palpable among enthusiasts. Early users have reported positive experiences, with many expressing eagerness to return to the slopes and test the technology in fresh snow conditions. The potential for electric skis to enhance the skiing experience is not just about speed; it also opens up new possibilities for exploration and adventure in the mountains. Conclusion: An Unepected Way to Ski Using AIIn conclusion, electric skis represent a significant advancement in skiing technology, particularly for uphill performance. By combining electric assistance with sophisticated algorithms and lightweight design, E-SKIMO allows skiers to ascend mountains with greater speed and ease than ever before. As this technology continues to evolve and integrate into ski brands, it promises to transform the way skiers experience the slopes, making the sport more accessible and enjoyable for all.Interview by Don Baine, The Gadget Professor.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy.
Ryan DeLena and his dad Rob join Hersh to talk about labels, limits, and the true realization of potential on this episode of Truth Tastes Funny. When Ryan DeLena was five years old, he was placed in a therapeutic school that relied on detrimental methods of behavior modification such as physical restraint. He was heavily medicated and four years later, was voluntarily committed to a mental hospital for further evaluation. His parents Rob and Mary Beth were counseled to place him in a group home. They refused. Today, Ryan is the youngest person to ski tour in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, having completed expeditions in Antarctica (2018), Svalbard (2022), and Baffin Island (2023). He was featured on the cover of Backcountry Ski Maps, and he's climbed and skied peaks in Chile, Argentina, Oregon, Washington, and more. He graduated from Vermont State University in 2024.

We are back on the Gear Shed Podcast, going deep into a reader's question. (Thanks, Slim, for sending your questions in.) Just deciding what boot works best for you can be a can of worms. Add in skis, and the pairing dance becomes a more complicated yet finely choreographed affair.Slim's questions begin with a query about boot pairings and ski widths and extend into the variable of ski length. And, of course, there's skier ability, conditions, preferred ski style, and so on. Gavin breaks it down on the podcast; hopefully, we provide some insight. If you have specific questions regarding the information (and opinions) presented in the podcast, you can comment on the website or email us on The High Route's contact page (editor@the-high-route.com). After a great day of skiing together, Jonathan talked with Jake Stevens (Rossignol's Winter Sports Equipment Director for North America) about world-cup race skis vs. recreational skis: what do they have in common; how do they incorporate technological advances; and what are the available options between skis designed to win gold medals and those designed to have fun on the weekends with your family and friends? It's a conversation that is guaranteed to get you thinking about various approaches to the mountain — and your own approach to sliding around on snow.RELATED LINKS:OpenSnow.com/buy - code: blister50Our Blister Rec Shop: Spokane Alpine Haus5850 Fest, Ketchum, IdahoBLISTER+ Get Yourself CoveredJoin Us! We focus on ski touring in this equipment special. Iain and Al look at the best skis and ski boots for people wanting an ‘all-rounder' set up or a dedicated lightweight touring set up, as well as discussing layers and the different bindings available. This Special Episode of The Ski Podcast has been made possible by Ellis Brigham. They are the winter sports specialists, with 16 shops around the UK where you can find all the kit you need for this winter. Alternatively, simply go to their website at ellis-brigham.com and you can buy online now. SHOW NOTES What is ski touring? (5:30) What are ‘skins'? (6:00) How are the bindings different? In this episode, Brazilian Army Colonel Giorgio Pizzani joins me to talk about the Brazilian Expeditionary Force from creation through 1944 -- a special formation of 25,000 volunteers from Brazil who travel to Italy to fight alongside the Allies. This was a feat made possible by President Roosevelt and the American forces transporting the BEF, then supplying and equipping the men to enable them to contribute to the fight against the Axis in Italy. There were also 67 nurses who volunteered along with the men to travel to the European Theater and care for the wounded. This is "Part I" as the story will continue in the 1945 series. Colin reacts to the Bucs beatdown of the Eagles and the Bills knocking out the Steelers! He thinks Nick Sirianni should be shown the door after the Eagles became progressively worse as the season went on (3:00). He gives kudos to Baker Mayfield and thinks Baker finally found the right fit with Tampa (8:15). He also makes his picks for the divisional round of the NFL playoffs (13:00). John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” stops by to break down the Bills dominant performance and they both agree this is the most dangerous version of the Bills now that the offense has found some balance (18:15). They agree that Mike Tomlin would be best served by a change of scenery and think he'd be the perfect fit for the Cowboys (28:30). They also point to Jordan Love's incredible improvement in the second half of the season as evidence that the Bears should move on from Justin Fields after three years of marginal improvement (39:00). They debate whether all teams should be drafting a quarterback every year (43:00), and predict the Rams will run it back with Stafford for one more year (45:30).
