In this episode of Memoirs of an LDS Servant Teacher, Maurice Harker explores the power of consistent, grounding rituals—your personal “flagpoles”—that bring stability and focus, especially when life feels overwhelming. He explains how a simple go-to routine, like listening to a conference talk, prayer, or a physical posture, can act as a mental reset, bringing you back to your best self. Drawing on both spiritual and practical insights, this episode teaches that these small rituals allow us to stay spiritually nourished, handle daily challenges, and keep our direction steady. Of all places you'd expect to proudly fly the American flag, a federally-funded veterans hospital should top the list. So why is the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines actively refusing to raise Old Glory at their main entrance? And taking drastic measures to stop anyone else from doing so? Last June, the same VA hospital decided to replace the U.S. flag with...another flag. Guess which one. State Senator Adrian Dickey describes this incredible controversy as he fights to keep the flag at the VA Hospital's main entrance--again. And the hospital administration is going to outlandish lengths to keep removing the American flag that honors the very veterans they exist to serve. According to Zen master Keizan's Denkoroku, Ananda spent 20 years at the Buddha's side. He had a perfect memory, understood all the teachings, was an impeccable practitioner, and attained arhatship. Despite this, the Buddha made Kashyapa his Dharma heir, and Ananda spent another 20 years practicing with Kashyapa. Finally, Ananda asked Kashyapa, “What am I missing?” This chapter of the Denkoroku discusses their subsequent exchange and Ananda's long-awaited awakening.
Note: Due to time constraints, my podcast AthCastMusic is late by 2 days. Usually it airs every Thursday. Parking Garage is a dynamic band, often performing as a trio or quartet, based in Athens, Georgia. They kept me laughing throughout ourconversation. The band members are:Dakota Snow - bass/voxNathan Whatley - guitar/voxZach Ross - drumsRafal - trumpetThree of the four members hail from mid-Georgia, with some having attended Georgia College & State University. They met through mutual connections during their high school years and have been musically connected ever since. The band solidified as a trio in Athens, and the recent addition of Rafal, (RAFFLE) a born and bred Athenian, on trumpet has given their sound a distinctive melodic rock vibe.Flagpole, Athens' music magazine, celebrated the band's arrival in the city with the release of their five-song EP, in 2022, If We Haven't Said It Already, produced by Well Kept's Tommy Trautwein. In the article, Lamb notes, "the lead singer has all the swagger of early Beastie Boys and the ambition of early Rush."I had an incredible time with these guys, laughing throughout our conversation. You'll enjoy learning about how they formed, their feelings about Athens, how they got their name and where their talent might take them in the future.Don't miss out on hearing one of their live performances of a song that's never been recorded. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 1, 2023 is: eleemosynary el-ih-MAH-suh-nair-ee adjective Eleemosynary means "of, relating to, or supported by charity." // She used her inheritance to establish and fund several eleemosynary institutions. See the entry > Examples: "I would not want you to think that Grady Thrasher is not a serious man. ... He is a retired attorney, a prize-winning children's author, a filmmaker, a philanthropist, and the partner, with his wife—artist Kathy Prescott—in various eleemosynary endeavors." — Pete McCommons, Flagpole.com (Athens, Georgia), 2 Nov. 2022 Did you know? A grammarian once asserted in reference to eleemosynary that "a long and learned word like this should only be used under the stress of great need." Whether or not you agree with such prescriptions, the word eleemosynary isn't exactly ubiquitous. Its tricky spelling doesn't do it any favors—though this wasn't always the case. The good people of early England had mercy on themselves when it came to spelling and shortened the root of eleemosynary, the Latin eleemosyna, to ælmes, which they used to mean "charity." (You may be more familiar with alms, an ælmes derivative that refers to food, money, etc., given to the poor.) The original Latin root, however, was resurrected in the early 17th century to give us our modern conundrum of a spelling.
